I, too, bought this chess set from CB, but in sheesham/boxwood, which is a bit cheaper - and they're on clearance. Actually, there ALWAYS seems to be some kind of sale going on at CB. Very nice pieces for this kind of money, only very minor flaws in the carving. CB, ChessbyIndia, or royalchess (eBay), they're all from Amritsar/India, and their prices are always competitive.
A Tax lawyer Very good quality for surprisingly cheap. Shipping is insanely quick (~5 days) but customer service isn’t very lenient... they’re nice and all people but you will be said no somewhat often (at least, that was my experience). Which pieces/set or board did you get?
Nice unboxing. I was debating to get them or not because the pictures make the rosewood seem a bit dark. Not sure if this is the same set but regardless its a nice rosewood color. Wondering if itll look nice on the walnut board I have or another one. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for your comment John! These are Bud rosewood (or more commonly known as Red Sandalwood) and so in the sun (not in this video) they glow a beautiful ruby red. On a walnut board with lighter tons (the brown squares) I would suggest sheesham, bud rosewood or Golden Rosewood (my favorite type of chess wood piece) the golden rosewood would be my #recommendation but it is rare (Chessbazaar doesn’t carry).
Thanks. I checked and the ones I like are just Rosewood and not the bud rosewood. The ones I like are a bit darker color. Saw a picture on chess bazaar w the walnut and it doesn’t look horrible but agree with you that maybe a maple board is best for contrast
Sorry for commenting years later. I have a chess board and some pieces from 1932 wich Bobby fisher played with. Now they have mold and are kinda ripped of
James Nemenyi Sadly, just the cross. But I have heard of this happen for the 1973 Petropolis Interzonal chess pieces Chessbazaar sells. Always wondered what that’s like... have you ever received multiple filials for kings ?
James Nemenyi I’m all about variants from standard wooden chess sets although I like them too. This one is still one of my favorites till this day because it’s Sandalwood has a powerful colour like no other! I love all sets that stand aside and are beautiful and weird in their own way (usually). My biggest chess set pet peeves is anything with figurines where I simply wouldn’t easily recognize various pieces from each other (I unboxed a 19th century style chess set where the bishop and pawn look the same when I take pictures of them for my instagram account. Weird but it bothers me and shouldn’t be like that haha. How about you? Standard Styles or distinct styles like this one? Rate this one 1-10 on a preference scale! What are your chess set pet peeves? 🙂
@@thechessnerd great video. I just discovered it and am coveting this set! I have a bonus coming up soon. Oh what to get...my acquisition disorder kicking in LOL! To answer your question I do like these Russian variations. Simple, pared down and elegant. Love the Lardy with its knight and flared out rooks. And of course classic Staunton but I don’t want my sets to look alike. I play all my sets too. What I do not like are themed chess. They are fun for some but I NEED that instantly recognizable standard else I go mad. When I say themed, I mean Simpsons, Marvel, figurines anything not closely resembling Staunton or Russian
Good question, this is a House of Staunton Bird’s Eye / Maple 2.25 inches square board, I din’t remember how long but maybe 24 inch by 24 inch is my guess. It’s my longest board. they still sell it so I guess you can search it up to make sure.
My three criticisms of this set: 1). The Bishop is too plain, should've the cut 2). The Queen is about the same size as Bishop and doesn't stands out 3). The Knight is so big
Nice video man, thanks!

Thomas Müthing Right?! CB ALWAYS has a sale😂 unbelievable. anyways I hope you’re enjoying your Zagreb Chess Set !!!
Very nice! I just placed my first order on CB. What was your experience with CB (shipping / handling / customer service)?

Jonathan Torres Definitely. At the end of the day it’s about personal preferences :) cheers!
Awesome pieces. Chess Bazaar is nice online shop. So much to choose from lol
Yeah I’ve stop buying from them though, it’s made for you to buy a ton of different pieces and less quality, my approach to collecting has changed.
