  • Zagreb Elite Series Wooden Chess Set, an excellent choice for an inexpensive quality chess set if you don't mind the darker look. Cheap chess pieces are usually light and not as well made so for the price this is an excellent chess set. Tournament size and can be also used for casual play. These chess pieces are affordable and of high quality. Staunton Chess Collection.
    Let me know what you guys think about this set. Also let me know in the comments below that you favorite chess set is. Thanks for taking the time to view this video, like and subscribe for more chess content.

    What's going on my good chess friends! Found a moment to sit down and catch up on all the great comments you guys leave! These comments, people watching is what it's all about, if it wasn't for social media, I don't think I would be surrounded by so many great people such as yourself with similar interest to mine, out to build a true chess community. If you happen to come across this comment, I wanted to update you guys as to the recent changes I see happening with RUclips. If you have started to see ads run prior to my videos, it means that RUclips started to run ads for my channel, however, not until I hit the 1000 subscriber mark and 4000 hours of viewing time, can I monetize. Some of the more elegant and cooler chess set I so much wish to show you are outside of my budget so my intention is when I finally hit those numbers and youtube starts to pay me for the ads, then I can use those funds to get better chess sets, and show you guys so much more, find time to travel and even perhaps go to some chess events. Before I hit those marks though, you will see ads on my channel but the funding from ads is going to RUclips only, which is fine, they need to be able to justify the HUGE amount of space that they have to make for all of my videos. With that being said, lets all make an effort to get subscribing and watching so we can get to the point where the ads you guys have to skip would translate to pennies for newer and better chess merchandise instead of just going only to RUclips! If you like this channel, share it with your friends if they also enjoy chess, if they don't enjoy chess don't share otherwise I'll be swarmed with dislikes lol. Have a wonderful day everyone! Stay safe and enjoy being in the moment! P.S. I'll drop this same comment in some of my other chess videos so more people have a chance to see it! Cheers!!

    Congrats on the nice video presentation. I received my 1959 Zagreb pieces (3.89" King) two days ago, and I am quite pleased with it. The dark pieces are Indian Rosewood, and the light pieces are Natural Boxwood. Total weight of all pieces was 1,289 grams. I was surprised that yours weigh 64 oz., or roughly 1,815 grams. Two weeks ago, another set of pieces arrived from India. They are the regular Staunton model, and total weight of the pieces was 1,214 grams. This Staunton model has a broad base for the pieces, to prevent pieces toppling over when playing.
    Your reviews are good, and I am glad I found it. Keep up the good work, and best wishes from New Westminster, BC, Canada.

      Hey thanks a bunch for a good review! The pieces I have do feel pretty heavy, its possible they are possibly adding extra weight inside, but they feel heavy and stable, like the wood feels dense in the hand. I think Indian Rosewood and Boxwood is a great combination! I Know they sell other Zagreb sets but most of the other ones are a little bit more expensive! I am grateful that you and others are finding my content of some use, that's sure to motivate me to make more content!

    Several years ago I purchased from US Chess, a Zagreb 1959 set with 3.875" King made of Boxwood and Anjan. I loved the knights. Then about 2-3 years ago I saw on the same site (US Chess) a set called the Leningrad with very similar Knights, also with the 3.875" kings made of Boxwood and Ebonized Boxwood. The basic difference between the two sets are the contrasting tops of the Zagreb '59 Kings, Queens, and Bishops while the Leningrad set are all of the same color. Enjoy your set, it's quite sturdy and playable.

    Since India has clamped down on harvesting and exporting of Golden Rosewood aka Sheesham. They are using Acacia wood as a substitute for Golden Rosewood. I got a library sized set from House of Chess that is advertised on their website as Golden Rosewood and Boxwood. What I got was Acacia and Boxwood. It is no biggie. I am willing to cut them some slack for this transition but not too much longer though. Once they have run out of legal Golden Rosewood on stock. They should update their website to show the proper wood. I do have a Zagreb set but it is a bit smaller than yours. I have always liked this design even though it was never used in the Zagreb 1959 tournament. What was used is the Dubrovnik set for that tournament.

    I ordered a Zagreb from Staunton Castle Inc. It was described as being a 3.75" natural and black lacquered (didn't read the full description closely enough) priced at $240 US, I assumed it was ebony and boxwood but it isn't. You won't see this set on the SCI website I found it on Amazon. Just curious as to why this set was so expensive (being just ebonized boxwood,) since I've seen Zagreb pieces in ebony and boxwood for much less.
    I haven't received it yet, should be soon.

    • @AlSuChess
      @AlSuChess  3 года назад +1

      240 is around the price this set was originally priced at on House of Staunton, they threw a sale on this "Elite" set, I think being that dark on dark pieces like these are just less in demand as regular boxwood. So this set cost me around 124, but I know House of Staunton has other Zagreb sets for around 200. Let me know if you like the set when you receive it and if you feel like it's worth the price. I was happy with mine, as it is a really nice and overall heavy set which is what I like about it. It feels more solid in my hand than the 219 dollar Cambridge Srping set I purchased before.

    Lovely set and great cinematography, keep up the great work.
    I see a Zagreb Elite Series listed on their clearance section, for $124.95, with the golden rosewood and the ebonized boxwood. I don’t think they’ll ask you to return it. Specially with that comically large -No returns- sign.
    I’ve had the folding (because of my limited display space) walnut and maple board on my wishlist forever. I imagine it would pair nicely and elegantly with a blood rosewood and boxwood set (also on the wishlist). Do you think the contrast between the board and the pieces would be enough?

    • @AlSuChess
      @AlSuChess  3 года назад

      Thanks for the reply! I agree with you about returns, I am still interested to see what they'll say. I wanted the rosewood because I felt like red and black combination looked nicer than this acacia wood/ebonized boxwood combo, but the pieces are nice so I like this set too. I saw the folding walnut/maple board you mentioned, I think that a lot of pieces will go well on it, as well as the set you are looking at. I think it blends in more when you have very dark squares and very dark black pieces, then you would need to be more careful. I like a house of Staunton blackwood and olivewood satin board but i would need to have the black pieces in a light brown or rosewood, not ebony or ebonized boxwood.

    Beautiful set, one of my first sets was an ebonized Zagreb. I also have a Leningrad set which has the identical knight. Now in terms of woods I have sets in Sheesham which is just another name Golden Rosewood and Acacia. They are extremely similar to the point of being identical. If I showed pictures of my acacia pawns and sheesham pawns I don't think many would be able to tell them apart.
    I am nearly positive HoS, Staunton Castle and Official Staunton all get there sets made in the same place by Mandeep. If you look at the packaging they are identical with the exception of company logo stamps. I also know that Official Staunton usually carries Acacia for their lower tier sets instead of Sheesham/golden rosewood. I highly suspect this was acquired at an overstock deep discount by HoS but was originally commissioned or meant for another vendor. I personally wouldn't bother with calling HoS with replacing or swapping unless you want to just maybe get them to concede an additional % discount on your next order.
    Also checkout chesshouse. They restocked some nice relatively cheap storage boxes. And as always keep up the great work. Not that it was ever bad but I can definitely see your video quality has improved, (angles that better show pieces and editing).

    • @AlSuChess
      @AlSuChess  3 года назад +1

      Thanks so much for this in depth explanation, that's what I figured as far as the differences between Golden Rosewood and Acacia. I was reading online about different types of wood and seems like there might be additional importing paperwork for Golden Rosewood possibly. I am currently trying to read about the distinctions between Bud Rosewood, Redwood, Bloodwood, Blood Rosewood, Red Sandalwood, all seem to be related and some chess websites seem to lump them together, while other websites indicate the distinctions, and then there are different varieties of Sandalwood that are not exported out, so there's the issues with some woods being endangered. What I would enjoy is getting my hands on some exotic wood varieties and see if I can turn a couple of pieces myself. Would allow to gain a greater appreciation of what all goes into making this pieces. Thanks for watching, filming and editing is definitely not easy, so I appreciate any feedback and just happy people are able to watch my videos.

      I think it would be interesting to see if snakewood can be turned into a piece, or cocobolo wood, pink ivory, or black palm and to what extend these different woods could be polished out, and how the grain pattern would look.

    • @ragnorak56
      @ragnorak56 3 года назад +1

      @@AlSuChess I think those would be awesome woods. I don't know what woods are native or cheaply imported to India but I would love a set in those woods. A long time ago I contacted Singh from Chessbazaar about a set with maple for white side (Hard maple has a beautiful whiteness to it different than boxwood) but was essentially told that importing hard maple to India was cost prohibitive. The thing is that almost all the craftsmen are in India. Maybe in the future an American or Canadian will use CNC machines and start manufacturing sets and could use maple and other exotic woods for the sets.
      Here is a very cool example of a CNC machine making a beautiful knight.

    • @AlSuChess
      @AlSuChess  3 года назад +1

      @@ragnorak56 That's a really great machine, still took quite a while to finish 1:45 per single knight, and then there is fine tuning and polishing. Faster than by hand, and more accurate, considering you would need to have 4 knights more or less identical.
      I looked up the characteristics of hard maple and I like how it looks, perhaps with a light stain it would be really nice too.
      I have some liking towards the look of distressed boxwood, where it looks like it has aged considerably, not sure how it looks in reality but those sets are a little bit outside my range as of now, maybe I could get someone to send me some nice sets to review.

    • @ragnorak56
      @ragnorak56 3 года назад +2

      @@AlSuChess @Al Su Chess I'm not saying all white pieces in Maple but certainly some. I didn't really see the difference between Maple and Boxwood until I I got my hands on a NOJ of Slovenia set and the whiteness of the maple gives the dark side extra pop. You can look up him up online. He is the only real chess craftsmans outside of India that I know of. I'm sure being in Europe makes the maple wood he uses much more economical than it would be for an Indian maker. He actually only uses maple, stained maple and walnut wood.. Obviously it doesn't make sense for Indian manufacturers to use CNC because they have cheap skilled labor. That's why I said if an American or Canadian entrepreneur decided to use a CNC to make their own pieces then. But another thing is that while it takes 1:45 of skilled labor to make the knight using the CNC it takes just as much if not more time by hand. In this video you'll see a major manufacturer saying that his factory can make hundreds of pieces in a day but only 5-10 knights a day. Now all this is just hopeful thinking for now.
