I go through the process of woodturning a Chess King on my lathe. From roughing the blank to wax polishing! The entire process took around 3 hours. The King is one of the more intricate pieces to make, with the knight being the most difficult.

I made my own chess set for my school final woodwork exam, came out with an A,I now only have the board left, that was 40 years ago.
No way!!.You should make a video about it
brooo pls give me your insta id i want to see ittttttt
Would love to see another video. Particularly on making the knights
That's a PICKLE.
The house of Staunton has a video on the high end chess pieces and the knights are a work of art.
I'm not interested in chess much at all but seeing the delicate craftsmanship of this piece- and marveling at the end result- was a great watch.
I could watch you do this all day. Make more videos of the other pieces! I’d love to see the queen, rook, & bishop.
mate that cross is so beautiful compared to so many other chess sets I've seen online.. Usually I really dislike the crosses of the king.
Amazing craftsmanship!
I’m preparing to turn a chess set myself, and your video was a great start for inspiration! Keep up the good work!
Can't wait to see the entire set, knights and all 🤞
This is outstanding craftsmanship. And your musical selection complimented the process perfectly.
I've seen a LOT of youtube content over the years. THIS is THE most impressive I've seen! Thanks for sharing your expertise with the world. I am better for having viewed it.
Very clever way of making the cross. Great craftsmanship
Chess pieces - is a very painstaking and hard work that requires a lot of time and patience. Very beautiful work. Thank you very much for the video
this is fantastic would love to see more wood working videos from you sometime :)
Nice work!
Great video creating a difficult chess piece and ending up with perfection. Well done!!
Straight line legend creates art, incredible
beautiful work
That king you made is just beautiful. I'd love to see how you made the knight, rook, and bishops.

Very Good Craftmanship and Handiwork.
Great work, dude!
Young man, this video was a joy to watch! Fine precision and detail using what I assume are homemade tools. Hope to see the rest of the set.
Good job, mi boy!! congratulation!
Absolutely lovely
Great Artwork
Exceptional work.. Just exceptional.
wow. fantastic work
I am interested in aesthetic chess games even if i am not a good player! I admire the development process of this king so much, that i hope to find your videos of the development of all the different chess pieces!
Excellent work.
Awesome looks fun
I enjoyed this video! What a beautiful piece you made!
Agreed.
A truly majestic King indeed.
extremely impressive
so satisfying
Excellent!
I have about half a chess set made, but I lost my momentum when I moved house.
I made mine on my metal lathe, and I have to say I'm blown away by your skill, because working by hand on a wood lathe is way more difficult.
I'm kot really in a position to offer you advice, but I see a lot of other potential chess set makers in this comments section, so here's my 2c worth.
Don't try to make all the pawns at once, otherwise the monotony will get to you, and you may end up not finishing the set.
Instead, for every piece you make, make one pawn. That breaks things up nicely and keeps the enthusiasm going.
Beautifull!!
Thank you for this video! I review chess sets on RUclips and I have to say you put a lot off attention to detail on the king!! Thanks for sharing!
Lovely piec.e of work. Thank you
So freaking nice
nice work thank you for sharing
Subbed to you today. After watching Storror, RUclips kept suggesting your videos. Subbed earlier, and you subs are soring. Fair play. I like the editing style. Bet you hit 10k by the end if the week.
Sensational video mate, the visual, the narration, music, all of it is spotOn. Great talent. Rosewood or boxwood, Ebony too are all hardwoods variety? I bet black walnut would look divine with the grain variations
this is art
wonderful
this is so beuatiful 🤩
Tonear a mão é lindo e seu trabalho é belíssimo e perfeito acabamento!❤
I Love Beautiful wooden chess pieces,as much as i love chess,Loved watching this and subed because of this one video, your very Gifted,i wish you thebest with your chanel

To be honest that is very high quality
It's a great job
Amazing
Stunning ... I wish I was a carpenter so I could express my ideas that way.
can you do a whole set? would love to see a knight especially, those have me clueless where to begin
This is brilliant. Very Well done. Tip: Your scare off many who would love to relax or even fall asleep to this video off with the music. Just a thought. Keep up the great work!
Incredible, you should definitely do this to order start making big bucks! Love your videos thank you
It seems like he is, check the description.
Stunning i don't have a lathe but im taking tge whittling appearance
Really nice craftsmanship, thanks for sharing. I wonder what it woul look like in Yew? I turned some 6 inch square bed legs from european oak, I was surprised how easy it was to replicate the shape freehand, but perhaps it's different with such a small piece.
this is fantastic, any chance of some more chess turning videos? would love to see some more!
Thank you Hugh, there are more on the way 👍🏻
@@archiefieldhouse brilliant development, thanks for the update!
Chess, but you can only move the pieces in straight lines.
Molto carino. Di buona qualità ❤
Gorgeous work and a beautiful King! How do you ensure that all the Kings, Pawns, etc. look the same? I've seen those Indian chess craftsmen using custom shaped tools that have the final profile of the pieces already cut into them. Also, have you made a complete chess set that we can see? I don't see one on your Instagram channel.
Damn wish you could make me a set!!
I wanna see how you carve the horsies!
GOOD JOB....💛❤.....
Stunning work, just made a board and would like to think I will make a set!
Regards James
One Handed Maker
Man this takes some serious skills and patience. Now I get why chess sets are expensive.
beautiful shape! How much time do you invest into a full set?
You have skills there chippie! I'm surprised that you aren't using a template to get the basic shape element done?
Please make the other pieces
Very nice work young man! And just FYI, that compound is pronounced just like the city:
[ *Tripp* - oli' ]
i wanna do this sooo bad ,
Very nice work! Imagine making 32 of those babies. And the knights are all hand carved 🤔.
The championship chess carvers make molding profile cutters (like shaper blade profiles, but flat instead of cylindrical) to quickly carve identical shapes on the lathe for the round pieces. Wonder if that would be feasible.
That cherry was remarkably light colored, almost like sapwood. Again, beautiful work.
Yes I know how they do it in India. I could get a piece of steel laser cut to the right profile and then hardened, but this method of turning requires almost no skill and I don't have much interest in rapid batch production. If there is a market for these pieces then it's a completely bespoke set in which the customer chooses the style and material.
@@archiefieldhouse Exactly... Your skill is exemplary. And as a turner than makes measuring spoon, cups and pepper grinders that can go into the hundreds I know there is a market of people who wants craftsmanship, quality... Awesome video friend
Where did you get the weight for the bottom of the piece?
Congratulations! It's espectacular! Do you promote courses to make chess wood pieces over the internet? Like regular courses?
This is beautiful work. The extra effort for the finish really pays off. Did you grind those smaller detail tools yourself?
Thank you! The brown handled small gouges are a set from Axminster. The light coloured handle with a thin edge is actually a carving tool (not meant for turning) but it's very useful!
Você pode mostrar as ferramentas de cabo rosa e a que não é usada para tornear? Obrigado!
Very good work - and a nice design. Well done. Jaques, who made the best chess sets ever produced (the old ones, not the new!), used shellac as the finish. Did you consider that?
Sangat istimewa 🙂
What is the Extremely Thin tool to get into the gaps? I'm looking for one? Thanks!
My man this is amazing! Please make a whole set. Are you professional craftsman?
Thank you for your comment, I am planning to make a full set, but sadly time is the limiting factor. I am only a hobbyist woodturner so it's a slow process.
What kind of chisel set do you use?
what is the green color you put on the bottom?
How do you do the knight?
do you sell these individually And how much do you sell this size piece?
green feld glides is 2 or 1,5 mm?
Beautiful!; How mucho Will It costo for You to make a ser lije this and send It to México city??
Good day Archie and great job. I would like to ask you where can I find such tools that you are using to craft my own chess pieces or if you can provide me with the dimensions of the metal tools that you are using so I can create them.
The brown handled gouges are a set from Axminster Tools. You should be able to make all chess pieces with that set of 5 - good luck 👍
At 13:30 the piece still has nicks on the second ring!
Wow, gorgeous! I’m curious: how many hours of work from start to finish, for this one piece?
Thank you! The whole process probably took around 4 hours
Damn…I’m sitting here proud that I made a chessboard box. Thought about making my own pieces and saw this…I think I’ll leave it up to the professionals..
You could have at least tested/played it on a chessboard with other pieces to see how it looks. I like the design of the King. Very nice work.
I went to your Etsy shop.... bowls and clocks. Any chance of a chess set? I would be interested in a Dubrovnik (with cross) and a Jacques/Cook. I am not a rich person though, so before I commission such, I would like a quote (to see if I can afford it). In any case, great video and beautiful work.
What is the tool that you show at 3:00?
I'm working on a set, so out of curiosity, how long does a peice like that take you?
This background music, what’s its name?
Здравствуйте! Чем полируете фигурку?Светлый и желтый брусок из чего?
wow. Just wow. I suspect if I tried it would take a week and there would be many mutilated half-finished kings on the floor...
