My grandmas 94, had a double masectomy 3 years ago and goes swimming daily and owns of Australia’s biggest companies and I’d bet every cent I have she (and millions of other people over 80) could out think your tiny mind any day of the week

The idea that men will have their egos upset by losing to an 8 year old, Christ. Who do you think it is who plays with kids (assuming the Mother has allowed on in the family)? It's usually men. Fathers, Uncles, brothers, cousins, teachers. In my experience, women hate playing with their kids. Women are also terrible at instilling any sense of competitive spirit in children. @@ankiking people say this all the time but playing with toys isn't the only kid like thing that should be associated with children. Children can be really into dancing and other sport, maths, literature and etc and like to do them competitively. Though I do think that she should try and maintain a social life.
@@ankiking What does being a little girl really mean? Is it about trying and discovering new things? She can learn a lot through playing chess and also socialize with other kids. She can either do that in school or at a chess academy. Besides, most children her age are too into their iPads to engage in such activities.

This would not have been possible some years ago. Girls and women allways had a tough time to be taught and supported in chess and beeing treated as serious opponents. Good for Bodhana she is very selph confident.

@@Overlordsen Yeah, well it's definitely easier for women these days because of evolution of the game and all the improvements in engines. They're able to memorize things now that help him them improve and understand the game much faster. Would not happen many years ago, or it was much harder to say the least.
He's adorable towards her, and shes such a good player and good kid generally. Their mannerisms are so adorable to watch, but wow she has a bright future and good sportsmanship!
Bodhana is a serious force of nature. I have watched her play in junior tournaments for a couple of years now; she plays with such accuracy and I have never seen her lose against another junior. Truly a phenomenal player and I am excited to see how far she can go.
When you think that she just started playing during lockdown :O, self-taught from youtube videos. She literally is a chess genius.
@@S___________D Dad is not a bad player mind you. He is probably around 1500 or so. She gets a lot of support from coaches and clubs but she has an immense talent and desire to win games; this is not something I see from her peers.

She isn't 1800 strength. The only reason she is still 1800 and not above 2000 is because she hasn't played enough games to increase her rating

Yeah, they both were very cool people. Awesome personalities from very different generations. She's of course just an adorable little girl as well, but her understanding of chess is incredible, and she's very very mature for her age obviously.

Chess is a young person's game because you lose the ability to calculate quickly when you get old. For 79 I think Peter did very well.
He did decent, and more importantly he said he barely plays, and hasn't played a rated game in almost 40 years. He played maybe 1800 or 1900, which I think is reasonable give what we know. If he was in practice and playing rated games then he wouldn't have done so well, but given what we know he did play well.
Also just thinking that ches takes a lot of stamina and that goes. That's why he clearly dropped off a lot in the last game.
Longer time controls
Yes, mental stamina and concentration. As you get older you can only focus and concentrate fully for short(er) periods of the day. @@martinperring5286
Agism. Casual agism EVERYWHERE. I can't unsee it now I've learnt about it. "Sweet old man" "For his age, he's so (insert positive word here)." We wouldn't speak like this about people in their 20s, 30s, 40s, or 50s.

They were both very humble. Bodhana is a very grounded and curious young lady, who behaves very politely and doesn't seem to have any arrogance about her amazing success so far. Peter is a charming and grandfatherly figure, who was happy to show Bodhana around the building and who had no shame in admitting his own shortcomings against an 8-year old chess player. Bravo to both.

This was such a delightful watch. Go far Bodhana. In Indian languages, Bodhana derives from Sanskrit for passing down knowledge as teachings, exposition.

@srikarreddy5714 languages don't "steal", languages evolve and if sanskrit, english, french, etc. had words for concepts that other languages don't have a word for it then those words are adopted and adapted in other language; that's why we have etymological studies, to investigate were words come from.
For example the *english* word "cream", comes from the *old french* "creme"/"cresme", and the old french comes from the *latin* word "crāmum/chrisma" and that one comes from *greek* word "χρῖσμα"/"khrîsma", and that comes from Gaulish word "Crama" and that from the *proto-indo-european* word "(s)krama". None of them stole nothing from someone, all those words are fruit of the influences of a culture to another culture.

I have had the pleasure of meeting Peter in person a few times, he's a bridge player who has done rather well. Just as this video demonstrates, he is a generous, polite and friendly person. Well done to Bodhana, for your success, and your professional attitude. Of course your family and friends are proud of you, but so are many people all around the world.

My money was on her from the start 😄 Peter says he's played one rated game in the last 48 years, in which case you can forget rankings entirely... For someone still playing pre-engine chess, Bodhana's command of modern opening theory alone should seem like some sort of black magic

I guess I am one of the lucky few who can say they beat Bodhana back when she wasn't as famous lol. Granted, it was a friendly OTB game and this was back when she was like 1300 ECF lmao. Had no idea she would become England's rising star back then!
i was lucky enough in the early 70's (?) to play a young girl named baraka shabazz (sp) several times at the anchorage, alaska chess club. i beat her a few times and lost a few times. ultimately, she moved back east and became one of the strongest women players of her time. interesting to catch young talent on its way up . . . and realizing that they have moved far beyond you and on to the upper reaches of the game. very exciting to see a talented young player take hold and start to improve. good luck to all our young players.

I agree. I hope she gets away from just playing the girls/women’s league soon. Personally I don’t understand why they still exist. You get better by playing harder players. I believe a lot of the top female players would be much better if they had to play Magnus regularly.

If there were no women at all in the top tournaments, girls wouldn't feel inspired or even welcome to get into chess as they'd feel it's male dominated. And on and on.

You can see that even though Peter has only played 1 rated game since he retired, he still had all the passion and pride of a master so it must have been a difficult pill to swallow.
I know that he's going to cheer for Bodhana with proud eyes as she takes over the world in the future years.

I remember when my grandfather taught me chess when I was 8, 8 years later i still remember how the game works and was able to learn the basics in a few days almost a week because I had remembered the movements of each individual piece. My grandfather passed away recently but I will always carry his legacy with me on the chess board. Always respect your elders no matter what!!

i dont think your mind really starts to decline significantly until you're past your early 70s really. i've had near 80 year old philosophy professors reciting and engaging with some of the most dense intellectual material with ease, so even past that age its very possible to keep your mind sharp.

This is amazing, huge congratulations to the girl.
Her blitz rating is higher than her standard, which is not uncommon for the very young. Or they played with no time controls, he might win. Or she might die of boredom.
A lot of people have slightly higher blitz ratings at all ages these days. People just play so much blitz as opposed to standard.
I don't think he beats her in any time control. He still plays decent, but he's under 2000 now for sure. Not playing anywhere near his old rating obviously, but we knew that wouldn't happen. She's better in all controls I bet is my point.
She is underrated in standard.
