I'm an intermediate player (high C on a good day). I would love to have a nice chess set like that, but I can't afford it, so I just use plastic chess men with a vinyl roll-up board.
I think there are chess set collectors who can't play. Nothing wrong with that.

For those who keep recommending box cutters: the intro was inspired by my boyfriend's, Call Me Kevin's, content -- since most people didn't see the clumsiness was exaggerated and left in the video on purpose, I get it: I ain't funny 🤷♀️ And I will not be making comedy skit attempts. Highly intelligent people often struggle with common tasks. They tend to overthink/overcomplicate problems that the average person would easily solve. This is exactly what she did here. Because this was an extraordinary item (due to its high monetary value compared with common chess sets), her high-powered mind, which is accustomed to seek out connections in order to solve problems, assumed the ribbon was a part of an elaborate mechanism to creatively open the box. Most average-minded people would have just pulled the protective covering off.

Being good at chess does not necessarily mean a person is intelligent. Chess skills come with lots of studying, preferably starting at a young age. Your depictions of "High powered" and "average" minds also signal your complete lack of understanding of what intelligence and IQ actually is and how they differ.
Just stop with high IQ thing and Chess. They study chess and play it for more than 20 years... Of course they are good at it, we have for almost 200 years of theory on it! it's not related to the IQ at all. You guys think Hikaru is smarter than Mozart or Einstein, just because he's a GM at chess???

The nicest thing about this beautiful chess set is you can easily play with it. So many "nice" chess sets are not very playable. Anna, you're a lucky girl :)
Alabaster specific weight is 2300-2330 kg/m3. Wood goes up to 900 kg/m3. So it is 2.5 times heavier than wooden pieces.

It appears that this effect is achieved by the final stage of production, which is polishing. A nice touch me thinks. Would be nice to play a slow and relaxing game by candlelight perhaps.

I just bought my first chess set a few days ago for 2700 rupees. Which is approximately 30 dollars. And seeing such wonderful chess sets just makes me feel to work hard in my college life so that I can have many wonderful sets
If you play speed chess with that, you would probably damage it.
I think this is more for looks than anything else. It's too marble-ish. Looks like it's just to sit on a $25000 table in a $10000000 mansion.

I've recently created nine chess boards that I made with the mindset of simply creating the very best, most objectively functional wooden boards possible. I've made them, and there is simply nothing I've seen that is really comparable. Would you be interested in reviewing one of them?

I used to have the Lardy chess set from France. I took a quick break from my game at a chess tournament, when I came back the whole set was gone, including my clock. At least they left me the bag. From that moment forward, I always played on a plastic set for public matches. Absolutely beautiful set, Anna. The best for the best.

Beautiful chess set. I love the alibaster sets with green dark pieces and squares. I wouldn't play with a stone set, but they're a beautiful piece of artwork.
Sweet board. I got lucky thrift shopping at my local antique stores and found a marble board that weighs probably 40 lbs or more and found these demons vs barbarians ceramic pieces a few weeks later. Altogether about $50 for a completely one of a kind legendary set and i cant even remember the last time i had someone to play with at this point. Stupid pandemic. Not that i was very good anyways, but still fun to play.

Sharp set. I have a fully unique set I found at an estate sale and got for $120. Looked up that it likely cost $2500. The board is 21” and all pieces of mirror, some tinted. The pieces are pewter, one gold one grey. Fantasy style. The detailing in each piece is astounding.
Had to go check... the sculptor is Michael Ricker, a pewter master.

The set and the board are beautiful nad all, but... the board is a bit small for this particular set of pieces. The diameter of the pawns should be half of the size of one square, you should be able to place 4 pawns in one square of the board, side by side, no gaps between them.
Pro Tip: open up the scissors and use one edge like a knife. Easy.
