*Hotteok dough* 1 cup warm water 2 tsp dry yeast 2 tbsp sugar 1/2 tsp salt 1 tbsp vegetable oil 2 cups all purpose flour Mix ingredients in a bowl. Cover and let sit for one hour. Mix, cover again and let rest for another 10 minutes. Afterwards, cover a workspace and your hands with flour. Knead dough a little bit and separate into 8 balls. *Fillings* Traditional: 1/4 cup brown sugar 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon 1 tbsp chopped walnuts (other filling is grated mozzarella) Spoon filling onto dough ball. Pinch to seal shut. Add 1 tbsp oil to a pan and fry, sealed side down. After 30 seconds, flip over and press down with the spatula to flatten the hotteok. Ensure both sides are golden brown, before lowering the heat, covering the pan and cooking for 1 minute. Take the hotteok out of the pan (eat warm, but it would be very hot so ensure you don't burn yourself - maybe let cool for a little bit).
Yes, some people make dough for hoddeok with sweet rice flour and flour and call it chapssal hoddeok, but I prefer fluffy hoddeok made with flour dough.
Made these last night!!! They were absolutely divine!! They were soft and super chewy! I used roasted peanuts for the filling instead of walnuts. I also left some of the dough in the fridge overnight and fried some more pancakes today. I can say they tasted the same, if not better. Thank you for this easy and incredible recipe!
Hi Maangchi, I made these for my family for Thanksgiving dinner. They went absolutely crazy. a.k.a. They loved them. Thank you so much for your kindness to share this tasty treat with me.
Hey Maangchi, Someone suggested that I should use a bit of glutinous rice flour in your recipe (decrase the regular floour by the same amount) to make the hotteok a like chewy. What is your opinion?
I made this yesterday, they were absolutely amazing! I also cooked kimchi fried rice according to your instructions, topped with chopped leeks and seasoned seaweed, seriously the best comfort food for spicy food lover! Thank you!
First try, AMAZZZIINGG! I had a Korean over and she said they were like real street food and asked how many tries it took me. She didn't believe me when I said 1!! Thank you!!!
Hi Maangchi!! I remember watching this video many many years ago and making it with cinnamon, sugar, and minced apples. I came back to this video because I remembered doing that and it makes me want to make them again!!
Did this and my mom loved it!! It reminded her of her childhood in Russia, the dough reminded her of a russian donut called "ponchiki". Very soft and comforting, thank you :)
Here after BTS had a hotteok party and namjoon got me craving it. Also sw ARMYs actually cook it on twt and it's actually pretty simple so im gonna make one ahhhhh wish me luck
I just made this yesterday and they tasted so good omg. Tip for anyone who doesn't have oven or warm place for the dough to rise: put the dough in a closed space and let it risen for 2 hours. Also, you can use coconut sugar mix with a bit of vanilla extract for the filling as well. They tasted really good and everybody should give this recipe a try!
I have a university event where we cook food from different countries. I’m making Hotteok for the second time 😊 thank you Maangchi Edit: we won second place 😀
Hi Maangchi! I tried this recipe today, and my family loved it ♡ I have been craving hotteok this winter, and your recipe was so easy and quick, that I had to make it right away. Thank you!
This was one of my first videos of your's that I loved and made! I miss this taste so much so I came back to this video to remember the recipe! Thank you as always, Maangchi! I'll be making some tonight! Much love! I hope you and you're family are healthy and well! 💞
I made this today and served to my family - they all loved it. I added toasted pecan and toasted hazelnuts instead of walnuts and it turned out great. Thank you so much! :)
I had this in Korea and didn't know what it was called! But it tasted amazing (even though I totally burned my mouth) and the old lady at the food stall was so good at making them, she'd probably made and sold them for decades. Thanks for the recipe, I'll have to try to make it myself now!
I tried your recipe for the first time this evening and they turned out really good... I halved the recipe and it worked just fine. Thanks for sharing this recipe, love love love your videos!
I just made an improvised version of these yesterday. I added one mashed potato to the dough. I used bread flour, and I used about half a cup more of it, to compensate for the mushiness and extra moisture of the potato. And for the filling, I used caramelized onions. They turned out amazing! So soft, yet very flexible. And they were very flavorful. :) Thank you for sharing. :)
Manngchi!! I have to tell you! I made these today following your recipie and they turned out amazing! You were right, the texture of the dough is fantastic to play with. I made the sweet version with sesame seeds and they kind of remind me of the inner part of a cinnamon roll! Thank you so much for another awesome recipie! Ill definately be making these again!
Thanks for sharing this! I just returned from Korea after 2 years and I was missing hoddeok. It was one of my favorite fall/winter time snack foods! :)
Thank you for your hotteok recipe. I try to make it today and the result is pretty good for my first time. My aunt love it so much. Next few days I'll will make it again for my mom.

Hi Maangchi! I just made this today and the pancake is so delicious! Instead of putting nuts and brown sugar into it, I put my own preference such as peanut butter with strawberries jam into it. So delicious! instead of put more flour onto the palm, i used oil ! is much easy to handle the dough on the oily palm! Thank you for your great sharing! Please make more desserts as I'm your desserts fan!
@paristhefarmer I'm sorry to hear that your hoddeok didn't turn out fluffy. As you said, next time wait longer until your dough rises well. Check out the written recipe and tips on my website.
