- Here is part two (a) of my basic training series where I am training my Nephew Nathan to be a pool guy. I cover vacuuming the pool including submerging the vacuum hose, removing the hose, various skimmer set ups, tips and methods.
Part Two (b) will cover vacuuming the Spa and also vacuuming the spa with the Automatic Cleaner hoses as well as brushing the spa to the spa drain as an alternate method.
The Series:
This is a set of in-depth training videos that I decided to put on RUclips. I could charge for this video series and or sell a DVD version but I feel that it better serves people if they are FREE. Of course if you find this series helpful in learning how to do service as a business or in training your teenagers how to maintain the family pool, feel free to Donate ;)

this guy is a beast pool man. seriously not an easy job
I'm learning much from your channel - thanks
Love your videos really educational for someone is is a new pool owner!!!
Great tips on how to service pools. Thanks
thanks for your and great videos.
It's a lot of work that most youngsters are not prepaired for (pool cleaning) sounds fun and easy....well....no easy
For the extended hose that you are using for the Pentair leaf canister, is it only one size? Or is this extended hose something that you get from a Hayward vacuum hose?
I have a Hot Spring Spa (classic) and I'm trying to decide if I should by the Pro Polaris wand (yellow?) vs. the Paradise Spa Vac. Of these two hand held wands...which of the two (in your opinion) is better? (I figure you've probably seen or used one of these Paradise ones?) Can you shed any light on this? thanks.
what happens if my pool has a steep slop to the deep end and the vacuum head wont stay strait?
He's very good I just do things different I been in pool cleaning business for 5 yrs
do you system vac every pool?
just out of curiosity, im guessing most of your clients have an automatic pool cleaner hooked up right? do you ever use that cleaner hose, for example a pentair kreepy krauly hose to manual vacuum? like when i manually vacuum my pool i just leave one hose attached to the kreepy krauly, and remove it off so it leaves me with 10 out of 11 hoses left, and attach that end of the hose to my manual vacuum. Do you always use your own continuous hose to vacuum? or do you just connect the manual vacuum to your client's pool cleaner hose and use that? just curious why most pool men use their own hose? is it not advised to use the pool cleaner's vacuum? btw i have a spinning swivel attached to the manual vacuum so when i do attach my kreepy krauly hose on it, it can spin freely.
I use the cleaner hose if the pool has an automatic cleaner. Most of the pools on my route have one. I just carry my vacuum head back and connect it to the cleaner hoses. Not sure why other pool guys wouldn't do this.
and what happens if my vacuum head went down the slope?
They sell the vacuum head at Home Depot, but w/out the pole. Did you use the pole of the long brush and just attached it to the vacuum?
If you are going to order the Poolvergnuegen then the Home Depot cheap vacuum would be goodto vacuum the spa and steps on occasion. They all should attach to your pool pole. You won't need a pool hose as you can use the automatic cleaner hoses for that.
hi,
i am new to owning a pool and have a question. i want to vacuum my pool manually i was told to shut my main drain and shut one skimmer down then attach the vac to the open skimmer is that correct? also, theres some leaves at the bottom is that ok to vacuum all the leaves directly into the hose line? thanks for your help!
joe ciminiello That is the usual process. I can't remember if I showed the Tennis ball trick in this video or not but an easy way to close off a 2nd skimmer if there is no valve is to stick a tennis ball in the suction inlet in that skimmer. Basically you want all the suction going to the manual vacuum.
I will vacuum my pool every Saturday and I clean it really clear but the vacuum hoses are the type of hoses that her for a clean the connect cleaner thing and I submerge the hose and I pull it out and I have the skimmer like 5 feet away from my pool pump and i have more suction time to were when I do my other accounts the suction is like 10-15 feet my other accounts 6 or 7 feet away less suction time it's because it's pulling water far away one account with 4 pool pumps connected to 3 pool lines and 3 spa lines but they are 10-20 feet away so I put the variel speed on to speed 4 I have 2 pumps on one pump off if it was green then I will have 3 on it had to much debris then I will have 4 on so it will have more suction then what it had
I have a vacuum hose but it's the cleaner type of pole
My pool has 2 skimmer wells with 1 hole at the bottom and 1 on the wall, do i just need 1tennis ball to get more suction? I’d like to try this
Yes, plug one line up with the tennis ball - that will give you much more suction.
Where can you get that short section of hose to connect in the leaf canister?
+rikilii That hose comes with the Pentair canister but you can just use a Universal suction side cleaner hose like this one: www.amazon.com/Swimming-Pool-Cleaner-Replacement-Style/dp/B0039QD0PO?ie=UTF8&creativeASIN=B0039QD0PO&linkCode=w00&linkId=TN5ANURXVT3V3Z2T&ref_=as_sl_pc_tf_til&tag=swimmingpooll-20
What setting do you use on the filter when you vacuum? Do you leave it on filter or do you turn it to waste?
I usually leave it on filter unless I am vacuuming out a green pool. But for regular vacuuming just leave it on filter mode.
Pool waste if is it very dirty
quick question, i have an elevated spa that water falls into my pool, my pool rarely has any dust since my kreepy krauly is always connected to my skimmer, BUT my spa always has this light greenish dust at the bottom of the spa. Is that just built up dust particle since the spa has no vacuum? currently my suction is on pool 100%, while my return is about 90% pool return and 10% spa return just so that the water in the spa will also circulate and water fall into the pool. What is the best way to fight this dust build up? it doesn't look like algae because my pool has zero algae, and i have a chlorinator just before the return line jandy valve so the water returning to the pool and the spa are both chlorinated. Do you think i should make the suction slightly to the spa instead of making it 100% pool suction so that the bottom portion of the water in the spa gets sucked in by the pool pump so that it'll go through the filter? i try to manually vacuum the spa every other week but is that just normal to have dust build up in the bottom of the elevated spa simply because there is no vacuum in the spa? let me know what's the best solution, thank you in advance
+bludika Yes, dust in an elevated spa is normal. You can increase the spa flow to maybe 30% and this will help reduce the dust. It just doesn't have a lot of water circulating in it so the dust that blows on top settles to the bottom before it reaches the spillway. Adding suction to the main drain of the spa won't do much as it will not be powerful enough to suck in anything that falls to the bottom. Increasing return power is more effective.
oh so you mean increase the return for Spa? my return for spa is at about 10% maybe, does increasing it to maybe 30% affect the pool circulation? I don't want to risk not having enough water return to the Pool itself, even though the water fall that flows into the pool from the elevated spa is returning some of the water, my pool has 3 return jets, i think thats pretty low for a pool my size honestly, will having more water falling into the pool from the elevated spa just outweigh the decrease in pool return?
+bludika It probably won't effect the pool flow by much. You can try it for a week and see if the spa stays cleaner.
Swimming Pool Tips, Reviews & How To -MrDgvb1 thanks!
I have done this before just like you show in this video with just the tube. Today something went wrong. I can’t get air out of my system & the window at the pool pump fills only half of the way. I have burped the filter valve many times. Plus there 2lbs of pressure instead where the arrow indicator is. How do I fix this? Thanks
Maybe there is something stuck in the impeller? Remove the pump basket with the pool off and see if you can spin the impeller with a screwdriver.
can you use one of these vacuum heads on a in-ground vinyl pool
You can. There is a slight danger of tearing the liner but only when the vacuum head is old and has sharp edges.
Right on thank u so much..
My vacuum line seems to be clogged i tried bladder at both ends pump and vacuum line and no success.i dont know if i have to open vacuum valve to create suction? When i switch valve to vacuum hose moves like it wants to go but it does not. Thank u
A local pool company or plumber can blow out the line with Co2 Gas.
Before i start vacuuming what do I need to put the Autopilot salt cell on??
You shouldn't need to mess with any of the settings as the salt cell is on the pool return line so it is after the filter.
Whats does tile cleaner ? First part of the video. Thanx
Reggie Lamay if you walk up to the pool and can’t see the bottom, spread some diluted tile soap on the water and it instantly gets clear where you can see debris on the floor.
The tennis ball tip is genius I'll bring tennis ball to work tomorrow
At 6.00 is it ok to vacuum with that skimmer basket out?
Yes, using a canister keeps leaves out of the pump basket.
I picked up a hose at Walmart. When I go to put the hose into the skimmer the hose end gets sucked down a little. Do I need an adapter?
The pump may have too much suction for your hose. I would maybe return it and invest in a more heavy duty hose.
If you didn't use a canister, would you need to switch your pump to a "Waste" setting?
Even then the debris will go into the pump. So a canister is preferred.
Sorry, I meant what setting on the valve..filter, waste backwash etc. ?
I vacuum in regular filter mode with one exception. If I am using a sand filter and the pool has lots of algae dust I will vacuum in Waste mode. Otherwise it just wastes too much water.
which pool cleaner will operate around pool latter( above ground 24'
ken jelinek They sell a special ladder guard that you could try. Most cleaners will get hung up on pool ladders. www.amazon.com/Zodiac-G21-Panels-Ladder-Replacement/dp/B004VU8SMW/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1434422600&sr=8-2&keywords=pool+ladder+guard
why don't u have the swivel that comes with that vacuum installed?
+wayne maynard I don't use the swivel- for me the hose fits more snug right in the vac head, especially when moving it into an elevated spa. Personal preference.
There's absolutely no getting around it. Manually vacuuming your pool sucks. Get an automated cleaner as soon as you possibly can.
Exactly! 👍
for the vacuum is there any reason (besides for looks) that the hose can't stay submersed in water either in the pool or in an another tank of some sorts filling to hose seems to be a pain
james sabourin You can leave it in your pool permanently with no issues. Why not get an automatic cleaner in that case?
Swimming Pool Tips, Reviews & How To -MrDgvb1 thanks for getting back to me. I'm about to get into the pool maintenance work with a new job. I'm more of a handyman so I've been watching all your videos to see what I need to learn
Question: new pool owner here, why does the bottom of the pool look like that? Mine is the same. Looks stained but the previous owner had acid washed 2 years ago. So why is there discoloration on the pool concrete like in this video?
Just mottling of the plaster. A colored plaster pool will show worse than a standard white plaster. Not much you can do to correct it.
Its a concrete product. It lives out door's. Its applied by hand over a 10 hours period of time.
Not a fan of the Hayward one hole skimmer. The suction is always much weaker than the standard 2 hole skimmer. At least in my experiences here in Central Florida
I use skim vac plate with skimmer basket under it for quicker clean up. I found a gasket called poolvacsaver that attached to my skim vac plate. Increased suction a bunch. Locks skim plate down tight. No air leaks.
why do you hook a canister to that hose when attaching to the skimmer
To prevent debris from clogging up the pump basket.
What setting do you use on the pump?
Most are programmed at the installation- On this one I use speed 4 which is set at 3000 rpms. Some of the older pumps with a Vacuum Mode are set at slightly lower speeds. But most installers will have a speed programmed in for vacuuming 2600-3100 rpms is the range I've seen.
Thanks
i am vacuming my pool. i have a sand filter and i want it set to waste as there is a lot of nasty stuff to vacum. while vacuming, the pressure coming out of the waste valve keeps fluctuating even down to a trickle.... why would it be doing this?
Ryan Ebbert Probably debris is clogging up the pump basket. Are you using a canister?
Yes. I kept clearing the pump basket. I have a guy coming today
I think either a line may be clogged
You didn't mention what you set the pool filter on, waste or just filter, if it's on waste; the pool water level with go down beneath the skimmer in a blink of an eye, if it is on filter; you just gonna create a vicious circle all the dirt you vacuum gonna eventually go back to the pool, any advise?!.
Noureddine Reddad a
If your filter is clean and not damaged, the water sucked by the vacuum will return the pool without any impurities
It would probably work better if after your done vacuuming you let the vac sit for a couple of seconds to make sure every bit of Debri in the hoses gets to the canister then remove the hose from the skimmer first and then remove the vac out the pool that way you don't introduce all that air into the system. May not seem like a lot of air going into the system but if you do that every week it can potentially start taking its toll on the filter pump.
Can use this vacuum for a vinol
+David Jacobo Better to use a brush vacuum. Or purchase a good automatic cleaner. Bouncing type wok best like the Zodiac G3 or IPP Voyager.
+Swimming Pool Tips, Reviews & How To -MrDgvb1 . I really prefer a manual one
Hey why not just use your riptide vacuum system every time instead of hose? Seem much easier and quicker
I do mainly. Rarely will do this.
I hope Stayright sees this video. Useless skimmer baskets handles.
😆👍
