Good job man, as a retired poolman I have come across this many times. I mainly did commercial pools but also residential, I can't tell you how many times I was flagged down by a desperate home owner who said her poolman stopped servicing the pool, it is green and they are having a pool party in 2 days. Everything this guy did was spot on with the only one exception. I would return the next day to do a complete filter clean cuz if you have algae in the pool shell you also have it in the filter tank and you have to get rid of it. The best part was picking up the check and having the homeowner praise you and thank you.
On a DE or Cartridge, it would be a given for me to tear down and clean the filter. For this one I ran some sodium-hypo through the filter and did a big (actually several) backwash
Jesse if you add that much chlorine how would it be swimmable in two days? I know it burns off but does neutralizing all the algae also use enough of the free chlorine to making it safe to swim again?
@Simon Waddington yes Simon. It takes a lot of chlorine to turn a algae green pool around. With algaecide eats up a lot of the chlorine. After filter clean, let pump run 24hrs. Check chlorine level next day, vacuum up the dead algae to waste if you can. Then adjust ph and chlorine level. Should be good to go in 2 days at least. If chlorine level still high. Knock it down with some Thiotrine.
Glad you mentioned circulation as a major factor in the results, I once worked at an apartment complex that let its pool pumps get into disrepair and they barely circulated the water in the pools, so getting them clean and stopping the growth of algae was a constant battle and ultimately a losing one given that they barely had enough people to do all the work. No matter how good you are at cleaning these, the owner still has to be on top of maintaining all the important equipment.
Thankyou. Im opening 6 pools a day and Water chemistry is my weak point. You help me understand it a lot instead of just dumping a jug of chlorine and an algae60 in every pool

I loved how you had to address adding chems to the skimmer. Been a service tech for 20+ yrs and always added chems to skimmer u less it was liquid based chlorine. And still have had heaters on pools for many many years. Not as bad as everyone thinks
Adding a liquid isn’t as bad as the people who put the Chlorine tablets in the skimmers. The bleach gets circulated out quickly rather than constantly being in there.
Some chemicals are specifically designed to go into the skimmer but most are best diluted into the main pool - important to know the difference. You don’t see equipment failure immediately but a pool inspector can find early evidence of damage in just a few months of chemical corrosion
My pool just went green and it has been like that for about two weeks, I am going to try your method; will let you know how it turns out. But, first I am goinf to test the PH levels. thank you for sharing. Eli

Interesting choice on the poly algicide. My go-to was always silver, though I've been out of the game for a while. Been there done that though, algicide + chlorine + clarifier means murky green to crystal clear in a couple hours. Give it some time to burn off the excess chlorine and good to go :D

Test your water daily as you’re going through this process....you want the water to hold chlorine. If you come back and check the water and the chlorine is low or 0, be ready with chlorine to add to jump it back up. Once the water is holding chlorine and clear, let it naturally drop down to that 2-4 ppm range. Definitely pull the filter apart and do a good cleaning once you’re back to blue and almost clear.
Judging by the video speed settings this likely took about 3 minutes real time. This is based off of him starting to pour at 9:20 and it being completely blue (visually) at about 10:30 and the speed being somewhere between 0.50 and 0.25.

Do you always use the sodium hypochlorite for regular maintenance? My pool is 40,000 gal. How much would I need to open pool from green and the how much to maintain, hot here in Texas too.
Always pour over the return while the pool is running and never pour down a skimmer. Acid is denser than water and will sink and damage your pool surface. You can also brush where you poured it to help dilute and spread it.
did the pump pumping when you add the pooltech in skimmer? Thanks for the video! I heard ppl saying when treating green pool you dont wanna run pump at the same time. this is some new stuff.
I think it would be fair to note that this type situation was an algae "flare up" that occurred over a short period of time. They can be knocked out quickly and pool safely back in service within a day or two. Pools that have not been chemically treated or serviced for longer periods of time will require a more extensive process.
@Mike Fu Yes, often that is the case. But in this case it can also be the result of equipment failures such as a clogged in-line chlorinator, pump failure, unusually excessive chlorine demand for some reason, etc.... Every pool tech out there has run into that situation where we are met by a green pool when showing up for weekly service. When a pool has been neglected for a long period of time, the owner already knows why the pool is green.
I did chlorine and fluculent 4 days ago and filtering none stop but my water is still slightly milky and chlorine high... I feel like it should be clear now. Just had my sand replaced with glass which should work better but I'm not seeing it..can I speed it up somehow.
How does this even work - even if the algae dies from the elevated chlorine level there's no way the filter removed all the algae in that time so is it literally bleaching the color out of the green chlorophyl in the algae?
I’ve been taking care of my pool for years and just use acid, liquid shock, baking soda, and that’s about it. Ten gal. Of shock at one time, how did you not bleach your liner?
Hi Josh, do you have any issues with high phosphate levels after killing an algae bloom like that? My pool had a highish phosphate level when clear so I did a phosphate treatment followed by a de spray down and recharge. Took a couple of days but the water looks as good as ever.
Hello, I got small pool with small light blue mosaic inside. I can get clear water in the pool but the water inside the filter gets light blue colour same as the mosaic after 8 hour filtering. PH and Clorum normal and using algicide. Can you tell me the cause. Can it be the mosaic tearing apart in dust particles? Or is there any kind of algae that has light blue colour? Thanks Jorge Dias
Hey Jorge. I don’t know of any algaes that are blue in color. It could be that there is a metal precipitating out of the water and collecting in the filter. Also, does the surface of the tile seem to be deteriorating in any way? What about the grout? Is it blue as well? I would make sure the water is balanced with pH and alkalinity being in the proper range.
@@SwimmingPoolAZ-SPS thanks for your help. The tiles and grout look OK. Someone told it's the copper in the algaecide. I'll have to watch that possibility inn the next days. Regards.
I saw a lot of "bleach" like bottles. Do you buy that much bleach (removing labels for video) or do you buy the chlorine powder and mix it in the containers?
“Guys calm down” Man you must’ve been reading my mind cause I damn near had a heart attack... I always tell my staff and customers don’t add ANYTHING down the skimmer ha
@@secretsquirrel8010 I can only surmise that certain chemicals in high enough concentrations could do damage to pumps and is easier to just say never do this instead of never put X in the skimmer with Y pump.
I'd have done 4 lbs of trichlor powder for a couple of reasons 1. Ph of trichlor is around 3 so no need to add extra acid 2. Much cheaper than 10 gallons of bleach not to mention the space it saves in your truck. 3. You may not have had to use an algecide trichlor is strong enough and lasts long enough in the water to most likely kill all the algae on its own. 4. For every pound of trichlor you get 2-5 ppm cyanuric acid so you almost don't have to add cyanuric acid to start the pool. Good jobs regardless but it's still a business gotta be the most efficient you can to make money
We use Dichlor on startups as it’s 9 ppm of CYA for every 10 ppm of chlorine. Here in Phx we struggle with high CYA and water hardness so that’s why I’m such a fan os sodium-hypo
Fair enough I'm in the phx area too and ya high cya is a problem from all the evaporation but you still have to have a base for startup and the only reason I'm not huge on the dichlor is its not typically as strong it only has somewhere in the 70% range of available chlorine so basically 3lbs of dichlor is equal to 2 lbs of triChlor as far as chlorine concentration
I have no frickin' idea how I ended up watching this video. I don't have a pool. But I watched the whole damn video and that was awesome.

Do you always use the sodium hypochlorite for regular maintenance? My pool is 40,000 gal. How much would I need to open pool from green and the how much to maintain, hot here in Texas too.
Can u plz explain what u mentioned that it's important to do when u use acid? Thank u
Always pour over the return while the pool is running and never pour down a skimmer. Acid is denser than water and will sink and damage your pool surface. You can also brush where you poured it to help dilute and spread it.
Hey! I got a question i have some water bugs in my above ground pool their name is back swimers have any idea how to escape them?
Question? Can i add muriatic acid and bleach together?
the boarded up house tells me that the owner is the bank, and they are trying to get it sale ready for an auction.
or they're remodeling?
Close. He said in the beginning they just bought it, probably from a bank auction.
Thank you so much for video. It really works, recommend
Good swimming pool science. I'm the only one in my neighborhood that takes care of my own pool. SATISFACTION.
As a pool service guy I don't like you! good job though, save that $$$
can you tell me where to get a test kit like yours please
finally someone who uses the same test kit
Taylor for the win!
my pool tech just uses R2 reagent to test our chlorine. is that the right way to do it. i never see him use the r1 with the r2 at the same time
did the pump pumping when you add the pooltech in skimmer? Thanks for the video! I heard ppl saying when treating green pool you dont wanna run pump at the same time. this is some new stuff.
Pump was running. There are some situations where you wouldn’t want to run the pump but here the idea is brush & circulate.
Does that algaecide have copper in it?
I did chlorine and fluculent 4 days ago and filtering none stop but my water is still slightly milky and chlorine high... I feel like it should be clear now. Just had my sand replaced with glass which should work better but I'm not seeing it..can I speed it up somehow.
Can you show me how to test the water ?
I have a kit like as yours .
What kind of filter media was in that round tank?
How long before you can use it after adding that much acid? Seems like it would take quite a while to be OK for swimming again.
Great video. Thank you.
Why is the home boarded up?
How do you get the murkiness out? i got the green out but i cant see the bottom of my 4 ft deep above ground pool now.
Give the filter some time to clear things up. If it’s still cloudy after a few days you can try a clairifier.
How does this even work - even if the algae dies from the elevated chlorine level there's no way the filter removed all the algae in that time so is it literally bleaching the color out of the green chlorophyl in the algae?
Dang I double tapped fwd right as he was saying “this is about the end of your attention span.” Lol
What if the reading is the opposite? Very low PH and very high chlorine? Super green pool
I’ve been taking care of my pool for years and just use acid, liquid shock, baking soda, and that’s about it. Ten gal. Of shock at one time, how did you not bleach your liner?
No liner in this pool. It’s white plaster!! We do go over precautions with vinyl liners in our Chlorine video.
that's really cool. i have a bromine and vinyl.. could i be able to use the ACID?
Yes.
Hi Josh, do you have any issues with high phosphate levels after killing an algae bloom like that? My pool had a highish phosphate level when clear so I did a phosphate treatment followed by a de spray down and recharge. Took a couple of days but the water looks as good as ever.
Every now and again but we’re checking all that stuff throughout the process so it’s manageable.
My question is: how long after such procedure till the pool in usable?
Hello, I got small pool with small light blue mosaic inside. I can get clear water in the pool but the water inside the filter gets light blue colour same as the mosaic after 8 hour filtering. PH and Clorum normal and using algicide. Can you tell me the cause. Can it be the mosaic tearing apart in dust particles? Or is there any kind of algae that has light blue colour?
Thanks
Jorge Dias
That’s 12% bleach in deposit bottles from Hasa. The “labels” are molded into the bottles so you can’t read them from more than about 2’ away.
“Guys calm down” Man you must’ve been reading my mind cause I damn near had a heart attack... I always tell my staff and customers don’t add ANYTHING down the skimmer ha
Why not down the skimmer?
@@andytwentyman9573 thats how you kill your pump
Never killed my pump and I routinely pour into the skimmer. How do you propose it hurts the pump?
I always put my chlorine tabs in my skimmers
Been doing it for 40 yrs
@@secretsquirrel8010 I can only surmise that certain chemicals in high enough concentrations could do damage to pumps and is easier to just say never do this instead of never put X in the skimmer with Y pump.
About how many gallons is this pool?
My pool is like that but still cloudy is it because I keep using the net and not letting it sit I have my filter on
I'd have done 4 lbs of trichlor powder for a couple of reasons
1. Ph of trichlor is around 3 so no need to add extra acid
