I used to have the hardest time throwing with a fan grip before I realized I wasn't keeping my hand on the outside of the disc. That one change made it so much easier.
Great video! I tried these tips in a field and got more consistent, snappier release with straighter, flatter, farther flights. It was nice to finally see what my buzzz is supposed to fly like 😅
Discraft keep these hits rolling!!! Id watch an hour long vid on anything mj is talking about lol. These should be dropping weekly, would love to see more behind the scenes of the process too. Itd be cool see how how all my discraft plastic gets from you guys and into my pm ax4 lol
I have used that grip as a natural grip in midrange to driving putter when not going for full distance on the molds. I have also used it when powering down on my midrange like fairway Impact discs (I have 6 backup at the right weight sets that worked for that mold). Then I have seen a different fan grip where all the fingers are spread out on the underside of the flight plate and thumb is more extended to ~85-90% of full and this I have seen most used for putting by some players for even more control if they have long fingers, I do not so the style you show Michael Johansen is what I naturally go with. Then my power grip is a power slant used more for Control/fairway drivers and not the fully straight fingers some use for max D discs like the Force or the Zeus, even the Nuke or Surge.
great video - i always tuck the disc well into the meat of my palm - can't wait to try this out...seems like it might keep things a little more looser and flexible. thanks!
Just curious: How tight should you grip the disc? Also, should you 'pinch' with your thumb and pointer finger and use less pressure with the other fingers?
I used to keep my index finger right on the rim too, but found that it inhibits some of the spin from the snap of your wrist. After moving my finger just below the rim, like MJ shows, I started getting more spin, which equals more distance and stability in flight. It only took a couple of field practice sessions to make the switch, and now it's totally natural :)
That finger outside the rim is good for control, which is why you see many people use is for putting and sometimes approach shots. But like DJPK said, it considerably limits ones spin, which usually means a shorter and less stable shot.
Best break down for any grip I've ever seen. You da man MJ
Two MJ videos in one year!?!? What a time to be alive!!!
I might have one more up my sleeve
This is the first time i have ever seen the fan grip explained in this much detail. Super excited to try it out
I've always been amazed by the distance (in addition to control) MJ gets with his fan grip. Great to see him break it down for us.

MJ ! Most classy pro on tour!
MJ is the man. Period.

MJ gets a like before the video even plays
306-0 haha
We need to see MJ on the course!
Los Olivos in AZ I think I have played that course more than any other course

@discraftdiscgolf please do more of these videos love the break downs so so helpful as a beginner!

Hippy! Still 1 of my fav throwers
Loving this break down from Iowa!
Such a nice breakdown of the technique. Thx!
Holy shit is he at Los Olivos park in phx? That’s one of the first courses I ever played!
Thanks MJ!!
Easily one of my favorite players ever. Like I stated in his ITB, one of the first videos I watched was MJtalking about his grip.
Just curious: How tight should you grip the disc? Also, should you 'pinch' with your thumb and pointer finger and use less pressure with the other fingers?
Also, I've seen others say to hold the disk fully in your hand and not give the gap due to consistency.
MJ for President
MJ is THE dude
Realy good, thanks
Go MJ! 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Uses it for every shot? whoa
This was awesome, I just started working on a better grip for my mids and stuff! I was spreading my fingers too much I think
Ive been trying to do this grip and im ripping the skin off the underside of my middle finger. Any tips????
Same problem
the only thing is that how does it release off of the hand compared to a power grip? The power grip rips out. Does this grip do that too?
What about a Control grip? The index grips the disk right? How does it compare?
MJ Comet City
thumbs up !
hall of fame
Should you not keep your index finger on the rim?

I'm so happy to see MJ doing commercials and tutorials. He looks so uncomfortable though lol
I just farted into a coffee mug
