You're so unbelievably correct about being loose and relaxed. I notice when I play with my buddies who throw further than me I try harder to keep up with them and that just works against me cause I'm tensing up and the disc flies 275 max. I still can't hit 400 even with being relaxed and smooth, but it's whatever. I play better all around just being chill and I can't hit 350 .
That’s literally me in ball golf lol. I’ll hit it 225 yards down the middle somewhat consistently but then when I play with my friends who hit absolute bombs, I end up hitting it 175 yards with a huge slice
I think I really needed this. Heading out to my home course in a little bit, and I can not throw for distance. I max out at like 200 ft and it’s very frustrating. I watched a video with Philo Brathwaite last night talking a lot about posture, and I feel like I’m just doing everything wrong. I am pretty strong, so it’s very frustrating to only throw a disc 150 ft. But I also know it’s because I’m just doing it wrong. But I’m trying to get better!
Great video! For those wondering about the hopping X-step, it’s called a vertical brace. If done correctly, it can add a lot of fast rotational power. Good examples of this are Kristin Tattar or Philo Brathwaite. The way Tyler shows it in this video, his weight is back because he is making a point, but if you decide you want to try it, your weight should be centered and over your toes. You hop slightly off of you right foot and almost float over your x step. Then you take advantage of gravity by bracing into and away from the ground letting it rotate your right hip backwards very quickly. (Note…there is still weight in the x step, but not as much as normal)
I appreciate the way you summarize the key topics and go through them in compact manner. I also do agree with most and probably all will help you simplify the throw and help one get to the 400' mark. That being said, the left arm and x-step topics are ones where I'm not sure if it holds for guys going beyond 500'. The goal of left shoulder going forward is specifically to create tension in your upper back / shoulders that provides kind of a rebound effect when starting to pull through. It's not about doing swim moves with your arm and increasing your rotation as some people seem to think. McBeth is a prime example of this technique. Regarding the x-step, I think, the small hop becomes necessary the faster your run up is. Unless you are Eagle or Tristan Tanner, you probably need to do a little hop when going beyond 400' and adding speed, because otherwise you start turning your left foot backwards. Anyway, I do enjoy these and a little discussion never hurt anyone so keep 'em coming.
the real key is finding the timing .. nothing matters until you get the correct timing.. a drill that helped me with that was the Dan Beto Drill 2.0 its like 8 years old but that was key to get my effortless snap!
One of the best pieces of advice I ever got that saw an almost immediate improvement in my backhand was to get my left hand out of the situation. I was hovering it over the disc as I was throwing, and when a friend pointed it out suddenly my backhand was viable. I can't wait to get out and try some of these tips out.
This is all so good. There are days hitting 300 feels difficult for me and there are days that hitting 340 feels easy. The good days are ones when I’m slowing the heck down and not actually trying to throw hard. Great video, thank you.
great tips, thanks. just tried dg for the first time recently and got all kinds of "tips". I was able to get some decent throws in but I think these tips will help me improve.
Thank k you this is a great vid. My gf and I are literally looking at our second outing and realized we need to go to some open ayso soccer fields to practice. This video makes a ton of sense, easy to follow, and you do show not just tell.
thanks for all the pointers! I've just recently picked up disc golf after years of playing on an ultimate team. So different! But i'm learning! Don't want to get frustrated in not getting as much distance as i want but this should help. Especially the follow through and keeping smooth and in line.
Hey Tyler, just found your channel. You make some great points especially in relation to being tense. As someone that only picked up disc golf 2 years ago & hasn't done much exercise since Covid, I feel tense all the time. I understand the mechanics behind the reachback with my throws topping out around 250-275ft MAX but I think what is holding me back other than a terrible x-step is that my whole body is tense. I feel like I'm still trying to "pull" the disc across my body in a tense way rather than loosening up & allowing my legs, hips, shoulders and arm to turn more naturally in order to get that "whip effect" which helps with getting more distance. I've watched countless videos from Overthrow, Robbie C, Foundation and others. While they're all great in their own respects, I think many people forget that the pros are athletes and constantly exercising, stretching etc to keep their bodies in shape & loose which, like you said in Eagle's example, even with a short or slower movement, that last few seconds where they really turn as fast as possible, is what is most important in generating spin & distance. I'm hoping to hit the gym over the winter months since I'm in Scotland with the hopes that I can do some exercising, stretching etc so that when I get back out to my local course in 2024, my body will be a lot looser which will hopefully get me a bit more distance. Wish you well with your channel & game. You've earned yourself a subscriber.
Follow through is very important. Not only so you don’t injure yourself but for angle control. I don’t think enough casual players realize how important the follow through is.
I've been trying to concentrate on my follow through because my elbow started hurting, and I realized I was slamming my arm to a stop instead of a nice smooth follow through.
Amazing tips and video man. Trying this next field day. I'm right around 330-350ft rn. Will help get to 400 I'm sure. Thanks again! If you take any form vids lmk.
I think you reminded to myself something very important to remember, like glveing lose, not turn the hips in advance... I will follow your recommendations! Thanks for the clear explanation
This is pretty late to be asking, but maybe this will be helpful to others. If you're going to be demonstrating your form, it would be super helpful to see from a side-on/perpendicular angle. Would also love if you replayed the throw a few times. Regardless, good advice I'll try to emulate, so thanks!
Believe or not, I started to follow your recommendations and finally yesterday I reached 100meters distance, with minimal effort. Thank you Tyler, finally something is turning well in my form!
Something I want to also point out is that you can be loose while still having a tight and firm grip. The way you wrap your hand around the disc can really allow you to get a super tight firm grip without crushing your forearm down. This is a great video!
The cold weather helped me the best, I was thinking about my form and drive too much. I took a 4 week break, went back out and beat my personal best by 15 feet.
Great video. Good stuff here. Have you seen the Slingshot Disc Golf videos recommending the left arm movement you're advising against? Just wondering if you have thoughts about his reasons for recommending it. I don't have a firm position on it myself.
Great video! Super pumped to try all this asap. Quick question, i’ve getting the disc to spin more is what gets it really going but in order to get it to spin faster i have to grip it tighter but when i grip it tighter i tense up. Any suggestions?
You should be able to have a solid grip without having your arm be too tense. Obviously don’t grip it too hard. End of the day it just takes reps to get it right. Reps reps reps. Don’t try too hard just try to get the feeling right.
Thanks for the tips they def help! One thing I've wondered about is the release point of the disc. I've been told that its best to release the disc at 11 o' clock than straight ahead. Some say just let the force of the disc fly out which never works for me since that becomes a late release. Any feedback on that?
I would probably not encourage anyone to try to release the disc at 11 o’clock. While it might give you some short-term gains in power, I think you’re making it way more difficult to hit gaps. You can generate plenty of power while throwing straight.
3:14 It's probably been pointed out a lot, but I think the reason Calvin throws far despite not "reaching back" is that the shoulder rotation, "coil" or whatever you want to call it, is the most important part of the "reach back". Straightening the elbow and extending the wrist, I think, can cause more problems than they actually contribute to increased power. I'm trying to stop with the wrist extension part in particular.
@@TylerTiede that's sick. I just watched your 7 step update video. Great tutorials. I'm doing most of the things you're trying to stop. Luckily I'm 6'8" so I throw 370' even with my garbage form, but I want to get to 450' and it's going to take me watching videos like yours, and filming myself to figure out what specifically is wrong with my throw.
The leaning thing is a huge problem for me. I did a bunch of field work today and realized i lean heavy toward my reachback, and then heavily towards my throw. I corrected the leaning towards my reachback (feels like im litterally leaning back towards the target but im actually straight up and down) but i still lean into the throw and idk how to correct that
I’m definitely @8:44 how I throw 🤣😂 I’ll definitely will try the slower x step and reach back more.. I’m 5”7 and 220lb so I think my weight and body fat might be a problem.. my average throw is about 300ft to 320ft..
I have noticed being loose help, but I never remember this when going for max distance. I feel like for max distance I should feel powerful, and not noodley.
I think you can still feel powerful while being loose, it’s just all about how you channel it. Most of that energy goes into trying to accelerate the disc forward as fast as possible and hitting the power pocket. you can be loose and have fast acceleration + be very powerful in the power pocket. you run into issues when you try to over compensate other parts of the throw like the x-step or reach back.
On the pro side i've seen that Mcbeth is the only one who uses he's off hand as "not recommended". While staying smooth & accurate. But, he's the GOAT as well, so he makes he's own throwing rules :P
A lot to think about here . . . I'm 72; normally my distance drive is around 240 feet. But my longest throw is 312 (range finder verified). What's with that? Also, Josh told me that I had it backwards - starting my throw as fast as possible and not accelerating much towards the end. Should I be saving a little for the end of my throw or what?
Yes. You want to release the disc when your arm is moving the fastest. The speed of your reach back does not matter. Once you reach the apex of your reach back, that is when you want to start accelerating. By the time the disc leaves your hand that’s the fastest it’s moving. Hope that makes sense.
I have dyslecsia to words, but why the fuck do I feel like I have dyslecsia on movment with backhand, like I can trow mby 70 meter max, forhand I can do all kind off shots, but backhand, I just feel handicap
Love your videos. When you're being loose, how firm are you gripping the disc? Is it loose all the way or do you somehow tighten it up near the release point?
i also see when u throw and u coach ur not coaching on how to generate snap, i would say to gain easy distance is to generate snap. While generating snap depending on the person they can gain around 50-150ft based on person
Being a beginner who can only throw it 250...I have only thrown on only 3 occasions and this "X-step?"is completely throwing my time off. I'm throwing in my net this way and holy shit dude. I was dipping and hopping and missing a 7 by 7 net, 3 feet away 😅 this feels great
Good tips, I agree with most of it! However what you said just before the 11-minute mark made zero sense; ”You are gonna be doing things up until you throw that are gonna be a result of what you are doing after”. That’s quite some paradox right there. I do kinda see what you mean by it (your habit/how you usually follow through affects how you move into your throw), but to frame it like you did makes little sense.
The wording was just a tiny bit off imo. The release isn't a result of the follow-through, but it's a result of the type of movement that won't actually happen unless you follow through after because the relevant part of the throw happens in a split second.

Man I am a 5 handicap in golf, and the similarities between golf and disc golf is actually crazy
Especially the swinging too hard part. Almost all beginners pull themselves off balance by swinging too hard
Thank you for this bro. I throw my fairways up to like 340, but every time I grab a distance driver it goes like 330. slow down. smooth it up.
Same man this is where I'm at and just loaded up fairways because of it. Hope to implement some of these tips next field work.
