One of the greatest accomplishments in sporting history and Coach Riley dedicates 90% of his speech towards thanking everyone that's brought him to where he stands. What an amazing, humble, and beloved individual. We all could learn a little something from Pat.
Nevermind what he did with the Lakers, thats legendary. What he did with the Knicks is miraculous. People thought he couldn't win without Magic, Kareem & Worthy. He goes to NY, has Patrick Ewing and no other legit 2nd scorer and he made them into contenders that were so close to a title. He saw the team he had and knew he couldn't run Showtime with them so he adapted to the players. Great coaches do that. They adapt
The GOAT coaches 1. Phil Jackson 2. Gregg Popovich 3. Pat Riley 4. Red Auerbach There was no order to these either, wasn't like a top 4, it was just 4 best.
Thank you Pat for coming to Miami in 95 and turning the Heat organization on its head. Adding Mourning and Timmy , and Marley. Recruiting Wade in 03 . You were one heck of a coach bringing your winning spirit from LA and your about business attitude from NY.
As a Pacers fan I have nothing but admiration and respect for this man as a coach and as a leader. He created some of my team’s greatest enemies lol. I hated those Knicks teams with Starks and I hated the those heat team with Lebron and Wade. But that hated was born out of respect and competitive spirit not dislike. The ultimate coach’s coach.
Imagine the league without him. He was everything to the Lakers and their Showtime years. He was part of the show! He exuded emotion, sensitivity, love, pride, determination, drive - a great leader.
Great speech..very thankful & inspiring. Every time I look at Pat Riley I cant help think of Michael Douglas. He just looks so professional and a born achiever.
I've always thought same thing about Riley and Douglas and coincidentally Pat Riley was from Schenectady, NY and Michael Douglas' father, Kirk Douglas (still alive at 98) is from the next town over - Amsterdam, NY.
Jerry West is the greatest architect in the nba history. His blueprint is everywhere: from the leagues heydays util now with the golden state warriors... That's why he is the logo.

+Fakename70 Look at West's postseason stats though. He certainly played well in the Finals, including famously winning the series MVP in '69. Merely looking at Finals record is quite superficial.
+Christopher Johnson I agree. But, tell that to the LeBron haters who - prior to 2 days ago - never missed an opportunity to bring his personal Finals record up for discussion.
He's a bad man inside the arena. Great statistician, defensive mindset, and would do anything to win. He's truly faithful to the game. He's appreciation of the players knows no bounds even his adversaries. Heck he retired MJ's number in rafters of the American Airlines Arena for being a great adversary in all the series they went through...
With what he did as a coach and then as a GM/President, he is arguably a top 5 coach of all tme and the second best Executive behind only Jerry West. True legend.
One of his big accomplishments and very credit worthy was to really support E.S. as head coach of the Heat. It's rare for as great a coach to take a backseat and support a young and talented coach in his organization.
As a Chicago fan, we fucking hated him in the 90's. Now, we have nothing but the upmost respect for him. Not just because he retired Jordan's jersey, but because how much he made basketball entertaining by putting up a good fight with any team he was coaching. He always gave credit were credit was due, and you'll hear it in his early interviews. Legendary coach! Thank you!
Wow, class & style = Pat Riley.... SOOO many forever memories of him on that sideline~what a privilege to have witnessed so many great basketball moments!

He got a 5th ring as assistant coach in 1980, too, back when LA only had 2 of them and they were very involved with structuring the plays and such. In footage from that season, Riley is usually in the huddle with Westhead squatting down in his usual style.
Near the end I started thinking he could have had a part on Mad Men for an episode...he would have blended in well. I've been binging on these Hall of Fame Speeches for a week now, and I come away with a great feeling about people. I wish these men would stand up and tell the fools that want to employ fear mongering and mistrust against fellow people in this society that we have a tremendous amount of strength available to us, but it takes leadership to make us get off the fences. It takes the common man to speak up about the abuse of power and misuse of the media to engender division and anxiety. You can feel it with these speeches and interviews. The Irving Johnson Larry Bird story. Becoming human beings. Not sociopaths and users. Now about that hair product, Pat...I could use something...I'm starting to clown out.

I used to spend a lot of time in LAX back when going around inside an airport was no big deal, dating two Delta stewardesses at different times. Every once in awhile, while waiting for one of them incoming or my own flight going out, I would see the Lakers as a group, led by Pat in a dark blue suit and tie, Magic, Worthy, Cooper, Wilkes, and of course Kareem, all gentlemen. So light on their feet, with big smiles, going where they needed to go. The greatest team ever !
Pat Riley coached great players Magic Johnson Kareem Abdul Jabbar James Worthy Bob McAdoo Jamaal Wilkes Patrick Ewing Alonzo Mourning Tim Hardaway Shaquille O'Neal Dwyane Wade
