Straight Shooter (as Magic called him) and GREAT shooter, who is among only a handful of the greatest shooters in NBA history. I think you're on to something there maybe not in the early years but I think after they filmed the commercial in the summer of 84 there was a friendship that developed and I think when they weren't playing against each other they rooted for each other.

It has been widely accredited to Ervin "Magic" Johnson and Larry Bird for creating a rivalry that saved the game of basketball. Before these two players, people were losing interest in the game. Stop being jealous and look for the obvious positives.
+George Daugherty IMO, there wasn't a better rivalry in the history of sports. Russell-Chamberlain was probably the closest, but Russell totally dominated Chamberlain when it came to playoff & championships, so that rules that one out. Plus the fact that Larry and Magic saved the NBA and both played for the 2 most storied franchises helped cement that legacy.

If you grew up in this era as a kid whether you were a Lakers fan or not, you ALWAYS turned on the TV to watch if Magic was on the floor. The man was an amazing basketball player. Sure there have been better scorers, better assist guys (not many), better defenders. But NOT ONE of them were all of those things wrapped up into one player who could play any position, play against any other player, and have a great amount of success in one fashion or another. Not to mention Magic was a natural leader and one hell of a showman. Magic always had a saying that went like "The first 3 quarters are yours to do as you wish, but, come the 4th quarter it's winning time"....and that summed up everything he was about. Magic is the quintessential ambassador of the game (or at least what the game meant to many of us in the 80's and early 90's).
Being a hardcore celtic and Bird fan, I have all the respect and admiration for Magic Johnson. He made me upset many times when he beat the celtics, but I knew he was the best and that is nothing to be ashamed about. God bless you Magic! I wander if Magic and Bird ever played PIG or HORSE after retirement?

It has been widely accredited to Ervin "Magic" Johnson and Larry Bird for creating a rivalry that saved the game of basketball. Before these two players, people were losing interest in the game. Stop being jealous and look for the obvious positives.

+George Daugherty IMO, there wasn't a better rivalry in the history of sports. Russell-Chamberlain was probably the closest, but Russell totally dominated Chamberlain when it came to playoff & championships, so that rules that one out. Plus the fact that Larry and Magic saved the NBA and both played for the 2 most storied franchises helped cement that legacy.
Russell totaly dominated Wilt ...serious ? If Wilt would have been on the celtics he would have 11 rings ...bball is a team sports and sadly Wilt was on lesser teams than Bill ....look at the stats they speak volumes

If you grew up in this era as a kid whether you were a Lakers fan or not, you ALWAYS turned on the TV to watch if Magic was on the floor. The man was an amazing basketball player. Sure there have been better scorers, better assist guys (not many), better defenders. But NOT ONE of them were all of those things wrapped up into one player who could play any position, play against any other player, and have a great amount of success in one fashion or another. Not to mention Magic was a natural leader and one hell of a showman. Magic always had a saying that went like "The first 3 quarters are yours to do as you wish, but, come the 4th quarter it's winning time"....and that summed up everything he was about. SHOWTIME 4 LIFE!
