  • Laurence Fox's weird sexist rant last night on GB News got short shrift from the organisation which immediately suspended him from the platform, and followed on later by suspending their presenter, Dan Wootton.
But GB news has still got plenty of presenters on its books who spout conspiracy, confect outrage, and misinform. This didnt come from nowhere - so why is everyone suddenly arguing this is a turning point for the fledgling broadcaster? We discuss the growth and the direction of GB News.
Later, We look at 'the Voice' referendum in Australia into Aboriginal representation. Is this the Aussie's brexit moment? And will it tear the country apart?

The problem is that there has been a push to present opinion alongside fact and to debate the two positions as if they were equivalent. This was the point when News started jumping the shark and News programs moved the needle from reporting and exploring to inform to chasing ratings to satisfy shareholders. There is a lack of gravitas and holding to account of people from a regulatory point of view and standards are falling into parody. If OFCOM was able to hold the line with real and legal sanctions we might get our news back. I trained as a broadcast journalist and I am now shocked at how loaded the news is with timid reporting and timid challenges. There seems to be a tendency to protect the status quo even to the detriment of the nation. The fourth estate is colonised by a revolving door support for big businesses and parliament.

Yes and it seems much more obvious in recent times. BBC seem really timid to me recently, not sure if management, editorial direction or perhaps, the fear of presenters & journalists. The kind of relentless attacks by GB News, tabloids & Govt eg. Lineker, Hu Edwards, Fiona Bruce, Laura K - right & left too who feel disappointed. Ofc funding is a big part of it & BBC constantly threatened on licence fee by ministers & rw media. Think they’re in v hard place between a controlling rw Govt and expected new Lab Govt soon. ITV seem much freer in their coverage these days.

As the cynic I have to ask myself the question: at what stage did GBN recognize the massive opportunity that was presented to them? Did they see the potential for outrage right from the outset, at the editorial level and rolled with it, or did they see it from the media reaction afterwards?...whichever it is that`s not important, because all this has done is giving them a massive publicity boost and put them firmly in the public eye: sure there will be an inquiry, and some heads might roll, but it is a small price to pay for the reach into the mainstream consciousness they might gain from it....outrage factory indeed.

The biggest problem with Aborigines & Torres Strait Islanders is that they’re a nomadic people’s and they’re being forced to live in the one place in a “white mans” house & worship Christianity, which has totally changed their culture. As a result there is a massive mental health crisis within that demographic which is being self medicated with alcohol & drugs and has this has gone on for decades and decades. This has then caused the break down of family units etc. and thus later generations have never had a chance.

She hates it’s coverage of asylum seekers, she’s quite liberal in immigration, and biggest of all is its coverage of Brexit, she was a staunch remainer. She also likes to watch Al Jazeera because in her view they cover a lot of world affairs that the BBC and Sky just don’t seem to touch these days. In reality GB News is aimed at the Gillian Duffy type red wall far right voter. It’s a loyal audience who lap up its clearly far right narrative but it’s not mass audience that the BBC, ITV and Sky can pull in.

The presenters have more freedom on GB News to speak their mind than being constrained by the BBC or Sky policy. In a democracy there is nothing wrong with this, but I believe there is a line that runs at personal insults to individuals and Laurence Fox crossed this line. If Fox had said I dont agree with her views that would have been enough. Reading about Fox, he'd probably had a few before being interviewed.

Dear News Agents, a critical correction to your report on Australia's Voice referendum: I doubt there are many people in Australia, even conservatives or those farther right, who still think Australia is still a British colony (see your words early in your Australian report). I really enjoyed this video. I think you three did quite well to be impartial even though your personal biases did seep through (I'm not complaining - it's natural). I do watch and enjoy GB news as I feel it fills a void left from mainstream media. I wish the presenters here at N/Agents wouldn't label opposing views as 'conspiracy theories'. These 'theories' are often proved right and labels like this are often used to discredit or delegitimize people, so I think you can choose your words more wisely. I really welcome alternative news stations and I also think there should be more, both from the left and the right. More opinions and more views from everyone across the political spectrum. I think news and politics need a radical makeover and this is what makes GB News so desirable. Are they perfect? Is anyone perfect? It's not what's most important. People are so sick of waffling and this has led to such an uptake in independent journalists, like yourselves who I do applaud.
