"Some people died, people were a bit unhappy with us because we were in government". This is why they're so despised. The disconnect. The blame shifting. The lack of accountability for WHY we were unprepared for covid, the lack of accountability for boris and his leadership during covid, the lack of accountability for the party who allowed boris and mad liz to ascend and drive the country further into the ground. And he dares to claim it's a vocation and not a profession. Listen not to what they say, listen to what they don't and then observe what they do.

“Some people died.” Some people?? Over 230,000 people died in the UK. And a lot of us are still angry because of this government’s useless approach to tackling it, and the way that they then went on to give millions to their friends and families with corrupt contracts.

    Brexit
In December 2019, Duncan Smith voted in favour of the Brexit withdrawal agreement.[109] When the House of Commons debated the agreement at the time, Duncan Smith argued against further scrutiny by the House, stating that Members of the House "had more than 100 hours in committee over the last 3 and a half years ... If there is anything about this arrangement that we have not now debated, thrashed to death, I would love to know what it is."[110] He later bemoaned the "fine print" in the Withdrawal Agreement.[111]

Is this the best election show we have seen so far? Some people might think the longform interview with IDS was a softie, because the tone was warm and friendly - but it gave us valuable insights into the man who quite obviously believes that, in his own words, representing and helping the people of Chingford & Woodford Green is a vocation.
Mind you I'm still struggling with the idea that this is now a marginal that Labour - candidate drama notwithstanding - is tipped to win.
True confession time: Some 50 years ago I launched a local newspaper in the area, back in the days when the local MP was a certain Norman Tebbit. Labour councillors in the area were non-existent, and to stand for Labour in the general election was regarded as little more than a first step on the long and winding road for a safe seat.
How things have changed - as IDS himself said: many of the older residents have now moved to the Essex seaside - places like Clacton.

I disagree with IDS on his view that "the electorate doesn't care about what happened in the past and only look at the aftermath" when infact in all the leadership / election debates voters have been asking politicians about the decision they took in the past and how they justify those political choices. It is, infact, the politicians who are keen to move the conversation with words such as "...this election is about the future and not the past" and "...I can only tell you what we will do if we form the government..." etc. Unless the politicians can build trust with the electorate, I am afraid all they will see are these ghastly silhouettes of politicians saying whatever that gets them out of a tricky situation, one question at a time.

IDS does NOT live in his constituency @maitlis He stood up in Parliament to protect Owen Patterson; does that really qualify as a class of politician who puts service and duty above personal gain @jonsopel ? Where was @lewis_goodall when you needed him? Yes, you should have discussed Brexit, the bedroom tax, free school dinners and inheritance tax with him.

The issue is the majority of people are not “consumed “ by the election. Maybe this is because they don’t feel that their vote really has any serious influence over the outcome. Maybe giving them a voting system that gives their vote genuine power might help them. How can you engage with something in which you feel irrelevant and powerless ?

I don’t believe either of them are conservatives, but they probably use different tactics in order to get their interviewees to be open. Duncan Smith has been around a long time so perhaps they need to be more wiley.
