    Hi - I have voted in Irish general elections, and it is so liberating to vote in order of preference 1, 2, 3 etc. There are usually 2 or 3 candidates per party standing in each constituency and it is just nice to know your vote is not being wasted. Ireland has multi seat constituencies with 3, 4 or 5 seats depending on population. Yes, vote counting is very slow, but I prefer it. Wish we had it here in the UK.

      For something that happens only every five years, it's absurd that anyone would think we have to have instantaneous results. What is especially worth admiring about Ireland's STV system - now over a hundred years old, btw - is that there's the maximum squeeze out of every vote. Best of all is to see the smarmy types that can top the 1st preferences, only to lose out as it is revealed more voters loathe them than love them. That strikes me as a very representative system.

    • @geraldbutler5484

      We have preferential voting in Australia. It ensures that someone with, for example, 35% who the rest of the electorate don’t want will not be elected. The Conservatives would not have won so many elections if the progressive side of politics had more of a say. Tactical voting is a symptom of this problem.

      NZ has had MMP aka AMS for decades now. It’s easy for people to use, and voters can choose the candidate they actually prefer while still voting for the party of their choice. It’s proportional representation but it doesn’t encourage proliferation of parties due to a 5% threshold.

    The question on a change of opposition mid parliament is interesting. I read the question as being more along the lines of... Let's say the tories win around 70 seats. If the new tory leader, let's say Kemi Badenoch for example, decides to do a deal with Reform and created The Conservative and Reform Party, and then the remaining One Nation tories say 'no, we won't countenance this! We're splitting to form a new party', let's call it the One Nation Party for the sake of this hypothetical.
    You could have the new Tories on around 50 seats, and then 20 in the new One Nation party. The Lib Dems on 60 seats might then become the official opposition.
    There's a lot of IFs in that scenario.

    • @Earbrass1

      Alternatively, suppose a Labour "supermajority" led to splits within the party (as Emily and John were discussing recently) leading to defections from Labour to LibDem, causing Libdem numbers overtaking those of the Tories (possibly aided by Tory defections to Reform).

The question was asking,. what would happen if the Tories were the second largest party and became the official opposition, but then broke into two (with one half merging with Reform) and the other becoming more centrist. They may then no longer be the second largest party. Could another party (e.g. Lib Dems) become the official opposition during the parliament?

      The answer in that case is clearly yes. The Leader of the Opposition is defined in law as "that Member of that House who is for the time being the Leader in that House of the party in opposition to [Her] Majesty’s Government having the greatest numerical strength in the House of Commons". (Section 2(1) of the Ministerial and other Salaries Act, 1975).
      That "for the time being" means it could change whenever needed.
      Section 2(2) outlines that if there is any doubt as to who the LotO is, the Speaker decides.

    There are some logical reasons why the NI parties aren’t included in the debates and discussion, but the overriding one is that the rest of the UK doesn’t care. Most of the brexit voting population were stumped at the idea that Northern Ireland was in the Uk after the vote.

      They wouldn't need to go as far as single market to achieve this. Greater alignment is a great start. That can come later. It's important to remember on brexit that it isn't about what's logically the best thing to do (hence why we left) it's about what the electorate's perception is. Ultimate aim will be to rejoin the EU but that won't even be our decision to make, it will be for the EU to decide to let us back in.

    35:00 but the news agents specifically tried to pin labour down on other taxes so it's a bit rich to suddenly take this reasonable approach to other taxes. The fact is, to deliver their manifesto they don't think they will need to increase the taxes they're stating. To deliver above and beyond that (eg getting rid of 2 child benefit cap) they will likely raise other taxes eg capital gains tax, which hardly anyone pays.

    In relation to Ireland, the emerging expectation is that the General Election will be in autumn 2024 rather than spring 2025. Of course the Government won't want that narrative to drive what happens but it seems unlikely at this stage that they will run on into 2025. As regards Sinn Féin, they did badly in recent local elections and also poorly in the European Parliament one and are no longer seen as a cert when it comes to the next Government being formed.

    NZ changed from FPP elections to the MMP (Mixed Member Proportional) version of PR - we get two votes one for the party and one for the electorate candidate. Parliament comprises 80 electorate seats and 40 for party list seats. Thus the electorate gets the candidate of its choice and the government needs majority support. This has tended to two party coalition governments as splinter parties who do not get any electorate seats must get 5% of the party vote to participate.

    Why do we have to ‘look again’ at first past the post if Labour get a big majority?. No one was calling for this post 83 when Thatcher got a 140+ majority or again in 87 when it was 100+. We had an alternative vote referendum in 2011 and nearly 68% (take that Brexit referendum) voted to keep first past the post. It seems as with everything Tory we like it when it works for us but the moment we get absolutely battered it’s not fair and need changing.

    • @gerardmackay8909

      So true and as someone recently said ‘FPTP is great until your numbers drop low enough’. Tories on 21% is 150 seats, Tories on 19% 50 if they’re lucky. That’s the reality of a thinly spread vote with FPTP

    • @At0micFruit
      @At0micFruit 8 дней назад

      Firstly, AV was not a proper proportional voting system - it is convoluted and confusing (who on earth wants to rank candidates?!). And secondly the only other European country that uses FPTP is Belarus, not exactly great company to be in! The Tories have never supported PR but if this is finally the election that makes them consider it, even if it is purely self serving, then that's better than keeping our current terrible voting system.

    • @PaulStargasm
      @PaulStargasm 7 дней назад +2

      Labour do need to look at FPTP even with a huge majority. History has told us labour may get in for 10 years and build infrastructure but it's inevitable the tories will get back in for a longer period and destroy it all again. This cycle has to end.

    I really don't like the way that PR has become the only alternative. I voted for AV, and believe in electoral reform, but I really don't think we can underestimate the value in the voting link between a physical/geographic constituency and MP election/campaigning. And also for Parliament to be able to function with majorities, necessitating parties that have a broad policy in the round for the electorate, rather than horse-trading policies between parties after the vote has happened in making government. And most of all allowing for clear allocation of accountability for governance instead of diffusing blame across coalitions, esp. when there is gridlock. If we are discussing electoral reform we should also be discussing Ranked Choice/AV (and STV). Also other elements of reform like genuine political/geographic/taxing devolution. Proportional representation isn't the be-all of democracy. (also the constituency link has been found to be a key factor in mitigating (of course not totally) national lobbyist grooming)

    I think Emily is wrong here. FPTP is fundamentally flawed and intrinsically ‘unfair’. Yes, it certainly has some strengths which she outlined, and also the downside of fringe, often dangerous, parties of both the far left and right getting seats, but in the scenario of Labour, potentially securing 75% off the seats with perhaps just 37-38% of the popular vote, it cannot be described as fair or even truly democratic.
