So this song and video is semi-based on a true story. Dave "The Snake" Sabo (guitarist) wrote the song after reading about an 18 year old in LA who got life in prison for breaking and entering, drunk and disorderly, and first degree murder. He did in fact shoot another 18 year old friend dead in the chest one night while drunk on the streets. The name Ricky was supposedly chosen to fit better with the song and to protect the 18 yr old's identity. If you are interested, "Youth Gone Wild" was the world's first introduction to Skid Row, you should check that out too.

Skid Row band was based out of NJ. Song idea was came from a local news report of a similar event. Yes the most successful bands in the eighties had a formula. Stunningly handsome lead singer with great hair and great vocal range, three guitars or two guitars and a keyboard, insane drummer, all members could sing and an ability to present raw metal rock song or grab your attention with a power ballad. Skid Row’s success was with Sebastian. After they fired him, never had another hit. Each part of the formula must be outstanding. When a component of it is gone, their success dwindles. Some reunite, some don’t. Some stay whole. Those bands are magical.

Skid Row, G&R, Great White, Def Leppard, Poison, Warrant, and so on. They were all part of what was called "Hair Bands" because they were all sporting the same hairdos, the same clothes, and the same style. The music varied slightly from one band to the other, but at the base, the sound you hear is the same. I had them ALL on EVERY inch of my wall, and when I ran out of wall space, I used the ceiling. LOL. Sebastian Bach watched me sleep every night, and let me tell you, it was a BEAUTIFUL thing to wake up to. He had an amazing voice. A lot of those bands came over from Europe. It was basically the second wave of the British Invasion. I know Def Leppard was, Europe, obviously, Metallica...I think Whitesnake...Iron Maiden...I know Ozzy was. They came over when the US started the hair band craze here, and I couldn't get enough of them. I didn't go to concerts because I was/am partially deaf, and that kind of sound when you aren't used to being to hear is BRUTAL. I made the mistake of standing in front of a speaker at a school dance once in secondary school. OMG. When you're used to everything being muted, and then suddenly it's like BAM it's too much. I knew I wouldn't be able to tolerate a live show. But I loved the music just the same.

Not entirely true. The boy that blew his own head off wasn't a delinquent like on the music video. He did this to himself because a girl broke his heart. He was a gentle soul and Pearl Jam were sued because of defamation.

I miss this era of MTV....this was a heavy song at the time, and still stood the test of time. I have played this entire song, Lead guitar part, and it was brilliant, he wrote a seering solo that is not heard too often. I Miss the Old Skid Row.

Skid Row was the best concert ive ever been to. Bach had been watching people get on stage and jump into the crowd while Pantera was playing and was so amped up he jumped into the crowd multiple times while Skid Row was playing...security was getting p*ssed

These stories are timeless cause truth never molds.
These 89’s big hair bands knew a lot of people from Vietnam War, and those men were not at all honored, so they took it out on their kids.
Generational trauma transfers until someone breaks the cycle.

One of the best power ballads of the 80's. Such a great song! Huge hit for them. Bach has some of the best chops in music. "Tequila in his heartbeat, his veins poured gasoline, it kept his motor running, but it never kept him clean". A great line! Skid Row wrote some amazing songs, many of which were unlike the other artists of the genre who were sining about sex, drugs & rock n roll. Skid Row had a lot to say and messages to get across. Good stuff!

Back then a lot of videos and the music always stood fir something I believe that came out when it was really bad with teens drinking and driving and drugs basically they were trying to reach out to the teens in classic rock just TLC this was how they would reach out for awareness on stuff like that
