Polestar is a Swedish name that means North star. In English it may sound like something else but in Sweden/Swedish, it has no such connotation.
The Polestar 2 originally is the Volvo Concept 40.2. It basically is a Volvo XC40 in a sedan body and was designed by Volvo. Volvo didn't use the body so Polestar did. Polestar is a modified, rebadged Volvo but a lot sportier. Almost everyone that works at Polestar used to work for Volvo or currently works with Volvo. You can see a lot of Volvo in the car, the seats, the vents in the back, the dividers in the trunk, the Thor's hammer lights, the paint colors. In the introduced by not on sale yet Polestar 3, you can see a lot of similarities and shared parts with the Volvo EX90. It's not that they are owned by the same company that makes them so similar. It's more that they are the same company but Polestar is like a sporty division of Volvo. Same thing in terms of where they are headquartered. All design, engineering, track and road and crash testing is out of Gothenburg. They start building them in factories in China, then expand to the USA, then will start manufacturing them in Europe around 2026/2027. They use all of the safety features of Volvo and are built in the same solid manner because essentially, they are built by Volvo.
The Polestar 3 thankfully excised the center console so that whole area is open now.

    • @jplonmar
      @jplonmar Год назад +3

Polestar is also own by a Chinese company(Geely) so that its Chinese name 極星 mean the same thing.
(北極星=North pole star) which the North (北) part is usually omitted because there is no South Pole star so no need to mention the "North" part. So it is simply reduced to just Polestar without the North.
It is considered a "Guiding Star" hence the name. The name would have zero connection to what English speaking person would have in their mind. (Pole dancing.)

Perfect timing. Still waiting on our 23 Polestar 2 (LRSM, Midnight, no packages) to Vancouver. Still considering changing it to dual motor. A bonus is you can now add the software performance upgrade to the dual motor afterwards for $1200 CAD. As Andrea pointed out last P2 video, Canadian federal $5000 rebate applies to both single and dual motor. BC rebate applies to single motor only and is on a sliding scale based on income.
A note for people ordering a new P2, dealers can and will charge a doc fee which is not mentioned Vancouver (GAIN) charges about $900.

My thoughts exactly, Zack, when I heard they were going with the "Polestar" name!
I wish these car companies would just spec down the powerful dual motor models to make them simpler. No heated steering wheel, just good heater and cooler, knobs for heater controls (even if by wire). Even a single motor model with a smaller display but cheaper by $5K would be great.
Regardarding federal rebates, I would tend to agree. Whether a $5K rebate really results in a $5K savings for the consumer depends on the demand and supply elasticities for these vehicles. If demand is strong, sellers can simply raise prices and recover a good portion of that $5K rebate. One could argue that incentives are helpful for both the buyer and the seller when the market is emergent and there are risky investments to be made by car companies, but we have now passed that point. Even if there will be a transition point, there is no going back to the days where combustion engines will be the main type of propulsion system. The rebate money could be better spent on building the charging infrastructure, or seeing if alternatives like hydrogen could be better for service vehicles like delivery trucks.

The 5k fed and 4k prov (BC) rebate is necessary to help switch consumers over to zero emission EVs. This is what helped me make the switch. Otherwise I would still be polluting in my old ICE car.

I feel a lot better helping someone who can’t afford a BEV to purchase one than helping someone wealthy buy a luxury car. My wife and I have a Polestar 2 dual motor, we got the Pilot pack instead of the Plus pack as we live in Phoenix so the heat pump/steering wheel are unnecessary and the glass roof kind of a drawback half the year. We love it!
The car gets tons of looks and everyone asks first "what is that?!", then once I tell them the next thing they say is "that looks way better than any Tesla!". The cache will grow but we're rather glad we have something so unique.
That center console does need updating for sure. They should do something similar to what Volvo did for the C40s center console, they have the same constraints with regards to the center tunnel anyway. However, I disagree with you guys on the software, we had no problem with it. Keep in mind that we're younger though, I forget AM radio even still exists until I come to your youtube channel ;P.

I drive to Windsor and the distance is 380Km and those extra Km's made the difference to making it without stopping and topping up SOC. The dual motor and the loss of efficiency over the single is significant enough to add range anxiety.

Performance: excellent. Range and recharge speed: good. UI: excellent. Interior packaging efficiency: poor. Value: as always with a Volvo product, this depends whether in your mind it competes with mainstream or luxury products. Materials, quality, and performance are luxury class...but standard equipment levels, dealer support, and brand cachet are low. In short, value is poor compared to Chevy or VW, but arguably good compared to, say, BMW or Audi. Still, competition is heating up -- see Hyundai offering Porsche-fast 800-volt charging in the Ioniq5. It seems like Polestar aims at a narrow segment that cares a great deal about performance and quality, has plenty of money, but doesn't care at all about badge snobbery and is willing to roll the dice on a new brand without a dealer network as such.

Andrea said that dual motor is a 3,500$ option but Polestar website talks about 5,000$ !! So where did you get the 1,500$ rebate ?
Beside the design of the center console, the problem with this car is the place where they build it. In China !!! By the way did you know that fabrication of each Polestar 2 generates 25 (metric) tons of CO2 ? It's huge !!! That is equivalent to run a 8,7l/100km gas car for 125,000 km.

And almost all of the consumer electronic products I buy, computers, stereos, televisions, you name it, are from Western companies but made in China.
