I think you made a mistake about the federal rebate $5,000 in Canada. The only condition is that the MSRP of the base model of the line up is less than 55,000 (excluding any freight & fees) which in this case qualifies the I4 because it stands at 54,990. However even if you add options and the car go above 65,000 it would still qualifies because the options are not included in the criteria. In the case of the M50 it would not qualify since the MSRP is already above the 65,000 treshold. I hope it brings some clarity.
We ordered the i4 sports model in May. Will get in in December if we are lucky but looking more like February. We looked at the Tesla EV but one thing that stood out between the two were the better customer service with BMW. Tesla seemed to not care if you bought their car on not. No sweat off their backs.
Great seeing a review of a North American-market i4 eDrive40! Most of the content I've been seeing has been on the M50, but the eDrive40 is what my family is actually considering for our next car. One quick note―there is indeed one-pedal driving, but to activate it, you will have to be in "D", then push the gear lever to the left ("B" mode).
Thanks for another electrifying video. There’s a lot to unpack here with charge times, systems, rebates (where/if/how much) and the rest of it. What is clear is that BMW was only ‘clearing it’s throat’ when they offered us the i3. It is shows that they are seriously listening to what their clients actually what. Well done them. This or a Tesla now?…. ‘come on … forget about it!’. Thanks again for your impressions.
I test drove one at my local dealer and have to admit it is absolutely awesome, vastly better to drive than our 3 and feels much faster and stable at hight speeds as well. Build quality is solid Bmw..no issues with low speed brain in our issue - I did not use regen.
You guys look at home in this BMW. Can’t wait for the iX review. I feel like the iX was design with the women customers in mind. Curious to hear Andrea’s thoughts about it.
My father was a mechanic and he always warned me to never buy a BMW... So I leased one instead :). BMW's are BY FAR the most fun driving vehicles out there. And the interiors are very well put together. I was shocked at how cheap and flimsy Mercedes interiors feel. I would never outright buy either because I don't want to be responsible for the repair and maintenance bills, but If you are deciding between those two Germans, go BMW. Mercedes is nothing like it used to be.
Then buy a pre-2015 Mercedes S-Class. Will last forever with little maintenance. And costs much much less than a new BMW i4. (Btw, I drive a 2019 X3 and love it.)
Why are the edrive40 so hard to get. My dealers have the 35s and m50s. But no 45s. I like the 45 better than 50 because longer mileage and ride. It’s already fast as is. 😢
Moving function keys to touchscreen does not save much on materials, but it removes a lot of wiring, which can not be done by bots in the factory, it saves quite a bit of labour, and increases reliability.
@@marclangman4836 Failure in these electronics is minuscule. And with some of them single point, that’s a quick swap out. Rather than dissembling half the car and ensuring multiple parts are in stock. Just swap out the screen.

From the U.K. 🇬🇧. Great review. Currently own a BMW 330e MSport Touring am still reluctant to jump to a full EV over here as charging infrastructure is so poor.
Great review as always. You both do quality work. What bothers me more about the front grill is the placement of the license plate holder in the middle of it. Looks awful!
I can see the roads in BC don't get fixed any faster than here in Ontario. The hairpin turn Zack and Andrea often take in these videos has had construction signs for months! Lol
We are absolutely loving it because no one is on the road, there is no beach access, so no one is on the road. We have it all to ourselves, it's great. We hope they continue to take their time...lol! - Andrea
Another great review. Thanks for talking about the charging experience. I totally agree that unless you have convenient access to level 2 charging and don't usually take long trips, EV is not for you.
Or you can plan your charging around your buying habits (groceries, mall, etc). If you live in a city and normally use mass transit (train or bus) a car is not for you - ICE or EV.
Great reviews (i4 and Macan) - thank you. Question, please... for $75k would you rather have a i4 M50 or Macan S? Yes, not a direct comparison - just curious of your thoughts. We are early 50's empty nesters in Texas.
My dad and step mom got one of these as a graduation present for my sister. It’s loaded and pretty darn nice. The electricians spent an entire day in our garage to install two charging stations.
That's a strange comparison. The Genesis GV60 is probably a better comparison to the i4 (performance and luxury) and more similarly priced, although the upcoming eGV70 is probably the better Genesis EV (styling, interior, space, practicality)...
@@OlJackBurton None of them are because they're all "crossovers," though getting on the lower side for crossovers. The Ioniq 6 will be a sedan or sedan/fastback to compare with this car and the Polestar 2 and Tesla Model 3.
@@benjaminsmith2287 None of them are what? The OP made the unusual comparison. I'm not sure what type of EV he's looking for, although if he's like most people, a crossover is preferred. The GV60 is quite similar to the i4 in most dimensions except height, where its about 5 inches taller, although the center of gravity is on the bottom. The GV60 does have at least an inch more ground clearance than the i4 and doesn't have the air suspension to noticeably lower ride height, but the GV60 will still feel quite different than most ICE crossovers. It's also about 12 inches shorter (but a slightly longer wheelbase and front and rear track) and a few hundred pounds lighter than the i4, so it still has a similar sized footprint. If that's not enough, there's the eG80 which is not a crossover at all, despite only being available in AWD. Of course that's a much larger vehicle, albeit compromised (most noticeably in trunk space) like most, if not all, non-dedicated EV designs, but still a bit lighter than the i4 m50 (AWD) with similar range (in the relatively strict Korean cycle). Non dedicated EVs just have more engineering "scar tissue". The Ioniq 6 is technically still vaporware at this point (no one has driven a production version), and i still believe that the eGV70 is the best Genesis EV, or Hyundai/Kia EV out as of yet (out of 6 current generation EVs). And of the converted EVs, like the i4, the eGV70 feels the most like the ICE version, which is already excellent and class leading with an $80+k interior. The eGV70 is less compromised than the i4 or even the Polestar 2, in that it still has the same 800V architecture, V2L and frunklet as the E-GMPs (Ioniq 5 and EV6), and no transmission tunnel in the second row floor...
Another great review, here in California the long wait times at Tesla or EA stations are out of control. Like you guys said, having the ability to charge at home on L2 is a must.
It’s always refreshing to see i4s on the street of Vancouver and Richmond. The amount of Teslas here is insane, it’s like the whole lower mainland is sponsored by Tesla. Wish to see more non-Tesla EVs on the road!
Too pricey! Those options should be standard. Backseat are too small for anyone who are taller than 6 feet tall. Good grief! Now now Zack be nice to your mother-in-law. 😆 Great video Andrea
Thanks for the review Andrea and Zack! Would love to see a comparison between the i4 40 and the Polestar 2 dual motor. From a $ perspective they should be a match.
In your charger discussion you hit on the reason Tesla wins hands down in the charger category. You need to install a 220/240 volt charger in your garage they are not that expensive. Especially for as much as you will be testing an ever increasing number of EV’s
@@Motormouth... that’s true and I didn’t think about that. I lived in a condo for awhile that had a parking garage with no way to put in a charger. And that is the primary reason I moved. Love your reviews
You guys mention some 480km range, but when you were charging it, it showed a range of only 394km at 93% charge. At fully charged it would be only around 420km. Where did 60km range disappear to? Inaccurate EPA rating?
Wow both this is a serious all electric car. Spring has sprung too Andrea with matching white to the car. Impressive interia display, makes you wonder why anyone would like the bland featureless Tesla interia?, but as they say each to their own taste wise!
The base i4 doesn't have comfort access, but the seller told me that I can still open and lock the doors by pressing on the door handle. He told me the optional comfort access option is to open and lock the doors when u walk near it or walk away. Is this true?
don't forget Zack (not that you could) but Andrea still wants that garage upgrade, so maybe you can throw in the L2 charger at the time of construction and "save a few pennies". 🙃
Wait power seats, memory seats, heated seats and steering wheel plus parking sensors is $9400???? There must be more. If not, that might be the biggest rip off that I’ve heard of in a long time.
These features are available in a package that is $9400 CAD. The package comes with many more features but to get the basics, a heated steering wheel, heated front seats, power front seats you have to get the package, it's the only way to get those features.
16 month wait time for the i4 speaks a different story...it is sold out. And I drove nearly all EVs available in market, too...the only one I would buy ist the i4. No, no Tesla for me...too noisy, cheap built quality and awful harsh Suspension...no HUD, no matrix LED, no Android Auto...etc
Tesla seems very expensive in Canada. EA charging is a mess, but I guess the Tesla Supercharging network could be used with an appropriate adapter in the US, anyway?
Another interesting review - thank you. Re your leatherette comments: I'm on my second X3, and for both cars the BMW salesperson strongly recommended leatherette over leather. Why? Because our car is primarily used for commuting to our cottage and for rural excursions once there ... supposedly leatherette is more durable and stain (think mud!) resistant.
The range figures appear to be from EPA. When quoting EV range figures, it might be worth while to mention that they should be taken with a grain of salt as the Taycan significantly outperforms and the Model 3 significantly underperforms in real-world driving.
All of the essential features you just mentioned I have on my KIA Optima for under $30k. Is driving a BMW about being able to afford options that should be standard? I love BMW, but seriously.
I ordered my i4 and I just had to spend like 4.5k to add some of the features I wanted. Its not that bad, it already comes with alot and adding heated seats only cost 900 bucks.
The singular screen is badly susceptible to glare. It needs to be buried into the dash. Do any of these EV's have a backup computer? Can you switch routers on the fly and how long would it take to download the entire software package? Do you need to park this vehicle in a home with wifi?
Hehe, that new rebate program is a jab at Ford with the F150 lightning being $68K for a starting price in Canada. Though its nice to see Polestar would fall in the new program with its $49K starting price.
I would not say the premium essential package is correctly priced but you ignored more than half of the options it comes with when describing it. Is way more than heated seats, etc. It actually includes all of the following: - Heated Front Seats - High-Gloss Black Window Surround - Driving Assistant - Storage Compartment Package - Tire Pressure Monitoring System - Auto Dimming and Folding Mirror Package - Automatic Climate Control - Alarm System - Comfort Access - Active Protection - Park Distance Control, front and rear - HiFi Sound System - BMW IconicSounds Electric - Electric Front Seats with Driver Memory - Heated Steering Wheel
Yes we are aware of that, but I can't list everything off in a review, just the basics that many would want. We just wanted to let people know that to get heated front seats and a heated steering wheel, it is in this package for $9,400 CAD. The video would be well over 30 minutes long if we listed everything.. - Andrea
@@The78dani Thank you, glad you enjoyed it It’s tough to get all the info out in a reasonable amount of time and keep viewers interested. Some will watch for longer but most prefer shorter videos, there's only so much time in a day Thanks for listing all the features.
I don't think the comfort access keyless entry is standard. I'm on the BMW Canada configurator page and comfort access is part of the $9.4k Premium Essential Package!
Great review, thanks! Regarding the BEV/PHEV federal rebate in Canada: Interestingly, this car is not (yet?) on the Canadian iZEV rebates list even though it should qualify based on its price. I emailed Transport Canada, and they responded that manufacturers have to apply to get the car on the list. BMW didn't apply yet? Or is there any other reason? Also, if you add a $9,400 essential pack (heated seats) and then also want non-white color you get beyond the $65K threshold for the rebate. The reason why a pack with heated seats costs you that much, is that the base price is only for marketing purposes (or to qualify for the rebate) - it is so barebones that it is almost a must to add this pack, so the real start price on this vehicle is $65 CAD. If you order this car now, you would probably have to wait for the 2023 model, and if the base price gets even a bit higher (above $55K) - then you'd lose the rebate for sure. I am wondering how good RWD is in snowy winters in the rest of Canada (not on the West Coast) - is it too unsafe? And how this compares to Polestar 2 (these are my two best candidates at the moment). For Polestar 2 you can get AWD/Dual Motor with more features at a lower price and it is in the iZEV rebates list. However, Polestar paused the orders until the 2023 model - so, we will see if they hike the price cause they still have the room to do it and still be able to qualify for the rebate.
Thanks for this information, I guess it makes sense that manufacturers need to a apply. Transport Canada made this announcement about the new rebate program, but the list of EV's to qualify on their site is tiny and the document with all the information is not clear. It says the cap is at $65,000 CAD but then it also says you can add a colour or roof rails and if the price goes over $65,000 CAD, you still qualify? Am I reading that correctly? Is there anything else can you add and still qualify? I feel Transport Canada needs to clarify this, it's not very clear.
For USA dollars… you can get a Tesla Model Y Performance version for less money than the electric awd bmw model and get more room, faster 0-60 time and a Supercharger network! And if you crave a sedan- the Tesla Model 3 Performance version is by far the best electric sedan you can get!
You would change your opinion if you drove one- let alone owned one! No vehicle nor company is perfect..but look at how far Tesla has come in only ten years! With two more factories on line, making their own batteries, and a charging network by far the most reliable and growing by the day… it is crystal clear Tesla is the Benchmark!
All misnomers. The TM3 is not a better deal after the current price increases TM3 RWD is $42k base and $54k with FSD TM3 LR is $51k base and $63k with FSD TM3P is $58k base and $76k if you add FSD and a metallic paint. The I4 still gets a $7500 rebate in the US. There are things on a BMW you cannot buy on a Tesla; HUD, leather, adaptive suspension, laser lights, AirPlay etc. Also if you add FSD to any Model 3 the disparity on price becomes glaring and the BMW is cheaper even loaded. Plus, the quality, fit and finish is not even close. Also, the speed is about the same and Tesla will never be able to match the handling of a BMW. As of March 2022, in US, there are 1315 Tesla Supercharger locations vs as of February 2022, 7018 Public DC fast charging locations, with the number growing exponentially in the next few years. So there are over 5 times more DC fast charging locations than there are Tesla supercharging locations. So, that's not a selling feature anymore.

Why, why, can’t car manufacturers incorporate the screen into the dashboard? The screens look like they forgot the screen and had to add it later? I don’t see any reason why it can’t be incorporated, it would be a much cleaner look. I also agree eep the buttons!
The fact that bmw did not engineer their electric car to take advantage of full region energy makes you wonder…why is it that Tesla vehicles have a strong regen- if you select it, and allow the car to come to a complete stop..

"The I3 was not for everyone. It was for that special person" :)
Love it always liked BMW’s but spec normally a bit sparse handling is excellent . I miss my 64 plate 125d M-Sport rear wheel drive.
The i4 edrive40 is $64k cad. The 2023 i4 edrive35(just released) is $54k cad.
In Vancouver, Hotel Blu has a charger & best coffee
EV BMW needs to have its own platform to be successful!
@@josefv-y8m Sounds like the ultimate driving machine!
We ordered the i4 in March in US, but it is still not here
The range figures appear to be from EPA. When quoting EV range figures, it might be worth while to mention that they should be taken with a grain of salt as the Taycan significantly outperforms and the Model 3 significantly underperforms in real-world driving.
Yup, Edmunds just got almost 40 miles over the i4 EPA rating.
Can you share the details about the federal government program you mentioned about this car qualifications
Ontario ?!
bmw canada has their HQ in the greater Toronto area
All of the essential features you just mentioned I have on my KIA Optima for under $30k.
Is driving a BMW about being able to afford options that should be standard?
I love BMW, but seriously.
BMW and Mercedes are known for making a moderately priced base model, then making option packages $5000 to $10,000.
It seems the edrive40 competes directly with the RWD Model 3, not the Long Range.
Review the range Rover Evoque
Huge miss from BMW, electric cars w heated steering and seats is a MUST in any package, 9,5k package to get it is complete nonsense.
Still not as worse as a Porsche. So if BMW increased MSRP by 9k and those packages came standard then would you still buy it? Obviously not.
@@H0rseMac U r correct, investing always seems the better choice for me vs luxury cars.
Clearly you can't afford it that's why. Investing ? If you were good at it what's another 10k? Lmao
I ordered my i4 and I just had to spend like 4.5k to add some of the features I wanted. Its not that bad, it already comes with alot and adding heated seats only cost 900 bucks.
@@Diggler569 only in usa not in Canada, do you like your ride?
The singular screen is badly susceptible to glare. It needs to be buried into the dash. Do any of these EV's have a backup computer? Can you switch routers on the fly and how long would it take to download the entire software package? Do you need to park this vehicle in a home with wifi?
haha that grill look scary xd
Why does BMW refuse to bring the iX3 or the new 2023 iX1?? I really don't get it.
I4 beaver. 😊
I would be interested in a dual motor M20 with a 200hp for under 50k. Hopefully, they could get me another 15-20%0 on range.
Nice save with that mother in law joke Zack 👌. I think you can turn off the Hans Zimmer sound if I'm not mistaken.
Those boots were meant for walking……Nancy Sinatra special
I thought the artificial noise generators were becoming mandated in some countries for safety for pedestrians.
Hehe, that new rebate program is a jab at Ford with the F150 lightning being $68K for a starting price in Canada. Though its nice to see Polestar would fall in the new program with its $49K starting price.
Confused between i4 and mercedez eqb
I would not say the premium essential package is correctly priced but you ignored more than half of the options it comes with when describing it. Is way more than heated seats, etc.
It actually includes all of the following:
- Heated Front Seats
- High-Gloss Black Window Surround
- Driving Assistant
- Storage Compartment Package
- Tire Pressure Monitoring System
- Auto Dimming and Folding Mirror Package
- Automatic Climate Control
- Alarm System
- Comfort Access
- Active Protection
- Park Distance Control, front and rear
- HiFi Sound System
- BMW IconicSounds Electric
- Electric Front Seats with Driver Memory
- Heated Steering Wheel
Yes we are aware of that, but I can't list everything off in a review, just the basics that many would want. We just wanted to let people know that to get heated front seats and a heated steering wheel, it is in this package for $9,400 CAD. The video would be well over 30 minutes long if we listed everything.. - Andrea
@@Motormouth... got it! Great review as always. Thanks!
@@The78dani Thank you, glad you enjoyed it It’s tough to get all the info out in a reasonable amount of time and keep viewers interested. Some will watch for longer but most prefer shorter videos, there's only so much time in a day Thanks for listing all the features.
Wait, m40 of Canadian is much cheaper than us???? And Canada offer $5000
I don't think the comfort access keyless entry is standard. I'm on the BMW Canada configurator page and comfort access is part of the $9.4k Premium Essential Package!
I have one and love it. The car does have wireless android auto.
Great review, thanks!
Regarding the BEV/PHEV federal rebate in Canada:
Interestingly, this car is not (yet?) on the Canadian iZEV rebates list even though it should qualify based on its price.
But it’s still a Tesla! Would not associate with the brand or the fanboys ….. both painful.
The TM3 is not a better deal after the current price increases
TM3 RWD is $42k base and $54k with FSD
TM3 LR is $51k base and $63k with FSD
TM3P is $58k base and $76k if you add FSD and a metallic paint.
Cool- you should get the bmw, see how your ownership experience is the next couple of years.
@@tonys9413 just switched to a Tesla over a month ago. After about 11 years of driving benzes and beamers. I feel like I got yanked from dark ages. I’m not kidding. That’s how huge the difference in driving and car operation over all is. Will never go back to Germans, all the more combustion engines. Day and night.
I believe BMW is on the right track not too expensive, and it's a sedan. Also, I wonder when you guys get to try the Lucid Air?
Why have any grill on an electric car, let alone that one?
Please, when it comes to EV just the range in kilometers and 0-100km is the only stat that means anything. FYI, 22 years I owned 4 BMWS and next month I’m getting a Tesla Y. BMWS are 12 years behind,
Interesting ...drove almost All EVs including EQS and Tesla...and the only one I would buy is the I4.
The Real world Tests of owners Show a consumption about 18kwh/100km, which is awsome, too.
Don't See any advantage buying this harsh riding, noisy tin can called Model 3 or Y.
Since Tesla opens the Networks step by step in Europa...Norway, Netherland, Belgium, Austria already opened...no advantage anymore, too.
@@josefv-y8m that’s good that you like the I4. Somebody has got to buy it. Too bad BMW is family controlled, or Tesla would of bought it.
I’m so glad our province doesn’t have front licence plates, ruins the look of the vehicle. I agree with others base model over 50g and no heated seats or steering? On the plus I like the big screen the new vehicles are coming out with
"Mother-in-law" -land mines 🤣😅🤣😂
Why, why, can’t car manufacturers incorporate the screen into the dashboard? The screens look like they forgot the screen and had to add it later? I don’t see any reason why it can’t be incorporated, it would be a much cleaner look. I also agree eep the buttons!
Chunky Chunkerson!
Non buyers= Beautiful. Serious buyers= Its UGLY, no thanks.
I'm a serious buyer and I like it, would buy one, so....
Agree, Big BMW fan but these are hideous.
The fact that bmw did not engineer their electric car to take advantage of full region energy makes you wonder…why is it that Tesla vehicles have a strong regen- if you select it, and allow the car to come to a complete stop..
Move the shifter to the left and it has strong regen and will stop. Also has active regen options.
