We bought an eDrive 40 msport with adaptive dampers and have put about 2,500 miles on it so far. Your comments match our experience. The i4 had better driving dynamics, better cabin, and better fit and finish than a raft of other EVs we tested. I was concerned about range, but in the late fall with temps in the 50-60s F, we could easily get 4.0 mi/kWh. The instant torque is easily enough for highway merges and pulling around obstacles like cyclists. In Eco Pro mode the car is a bit floaty but never to a degree that becomes irritating and the steering is precise, if numb. A sports car it isn’t, but we have an Audi S4 and BMW R1250RS to scratch that itch, at least mildly. Our use case for this car is luxury cruiser and occasional substitute for the SUV we traded in. Peak i4 for me is wafting along in a cabin quiet enough to enjoy classical music. It is the most relaxing daily driver I have ever owned.

Thanks for the review. All i4s have air suspension in the rear. Max DC charge rate is 205 kW for i4s with the 83kWh battery.

One more comment! Our i4 test drive was in a loaded M50. We chose the e40 for its lower weight, better range, and better dynamics. I was tempted to get the base (U.S) model because its 18” wheels add about 7% range, but was worried that the fixed dampers wouldn’t deliver what we enjoyed on the test drive. So we spec’d the msport with adaptive dampers and the big brakes. The mechanical brakes hardly ever get invoked, but in a 4,700 pound car it’s nice to have them.

Enjoyed that, thanks. Mine is due shortly. I discussed the suspension issue with the bmw sales guy and did some homework on it. The conclusion was that I'm a very average old fart who is never going to push beyond 50% of the car's limits so the active dampers would be wasted on me, so I chose other options instead including dark green paint with oyster leather interior plus all the driving and parking assist stuff.

Great choice of colours! I still haven't tried the adaptive dampers on the car, so I can't comment. I want to hope there is better body and wheel control with the adaptive type over the standard dampers.

I enjoyed the review, but was distracted at first that you kept calling the twin-motor version the “X-Drive 50”. That nomenclature might be consistent with BMW convention, but it was launched as the “M50”! (at least I don’t think it was named differently in Canada). My eDrive40 is specked just as you suggested (in the US that means an MSport with the Shadowline package to get variable sport steering , M adaptive suspension and M brakes). I pick it up this week and hope it is everything I have read and heard!

Great spec! Totally my fault whilst ad-libbing on camera. It was indeed named the M50 and I chalk it up to driving too many BMWs lately.

I'm really back and forth between the m50 and the 40... I'm going to order one soon, but I really can't decide which.

@Brian Makse - does BMW Canada still offer the ICE version of this (330i/440i) in Canada ?

I’m going to grab me one of these. I almost purchased the e drive 35 and couldn’t deal with the low range. The 40 gets 50 miles more on range compared to the 35.

What country are you in? The eDrive40 does have adaptive dampers in the US on the M Sport package.

It should be obvious from the top, but I state that clearly in every episode. Not the US.

So, because it's a one speed gearbox, does shifting from P to D technically make it a manual?

Direct drive with no losses in fluid coupling (the motor simply remains stationary when the car is stopped). So yeah, it definitely isn't an automatic.

They aren't going away, despite the political rhetoric. The world has about 20% of the resources necessary to fulfill their "plans" so good f-ing luck with that.
