Nobody will be driving one within 15 years anyway. At best they'll be sat in it while it drives itself as they'll all be fully automated (as well as in very limited supply, deliberately so).
I would have liked to see more of a comparison to the polestar 2, maybe when you get a dual motor m50i model? They seem to be the closest competitors because they are both smaller "sedan" hatchbacks in a similar price range with similar performance and range.
Mine was delivered on Wednesday and it is spot on. I only do short runs and alow annual mileage. I will charge mine when the sun is on my solar panels and it will cost me nothing to run. I don't need storage in the front but would have liked a rear wash wipe.
Great vid. Come on BMW, re-route the 2 black pipes under the hood, and there would be room to drop a deep moulded bin straight in there on the e40. Perhaps a shallow one in the M50. No doubt, there will be an after market mod / kit soon.
@@najb01 Yes, I get my e40 in November, but I doubt BMW will react to market requests that quickly, so we'll have to rely on the Chinese, I suppose. It would be a great addition though. I would deffo buy one.
15:20 I have almost this same car except a 2023 and the phrase well controlled or 'drive on rails' I use a lot when explaining it. BMW like Tesla and other EVs have a way to set regenerative braking. Think of it like driving a manual in a low speed as it breaks near immediately. When doing tight turns, switch backs, or most daily city driving I stick to B Mode and the car just hugs the road and I rarely ever break. Also like said previously it's more expensive than some cars for for a single motor but I find it is mostly faster than the stated 0-60 of 5.5 seconds. My only qualm at times is the turning radius is quite lacking and makes it feel even worse than my minivan. Hopefully in the future they can improve on that.
You can't add frunk to the I4, keep in mind this is a shared ICE platform, so there are packaging limits to the radiator, heat pump and motor/gearbox and power inverter.
@@EVBuyersGuide totally forgot the 40 is single motor...looked up some photos and it appears with some slight modification to cooling lines a small frunk space could happen.
Think of it this way: With 80 kw/h of usable capacity, it's as if the car was equipped with a 10 gallon gas tank (if you replace the kw/h with pints of gas, 80 pints is 10 gallons). How far will most ICE vehicles go on a 10 gallon tank these days?
Unless you drive for a living, most people don’t drive over 200 miles daily and most EV owners charge at home. The range is not a big concern for EV vehicle functionality. The limitation is public charging for (1) those who can’t charge where they live and (2) to a lesser extent for now, adequate numbers of public charging for the few times a year you go on a road trip longer than 250 miles. There’s not enough charging outlets for now, but they are gradually increasing in numbers.
Um, I'm all for your channel being successful on youtube, but asking us to go to another video for pricing information to "keep the algorithm happy"? That's annoying and ridiculous.
I like the front end - as long as there is no front license plate. I hate the long hood that leads to no usable space (in an EV, wtf?). I disagree about the wheels; this look is not worth losing 6% range forever (which basically means 6% less efficiency forever), plus I actually like the look of the base wheels better. I'm happy that the iDrive still has a physical control knob. At the end of the day, I think it is overpriced (surprise!, it's a BMW), but the federal tax credit helps for now.
While BMW does let you change the amount of regen with throttle lift off to an extent, you can't set it to no regen. There's no "coast", which is one of the reasons I passed.
Too bad you passed because it does coast like a normal car and it helps the car to save energy especially when it's coasting downhill through gravity pull (and not the battery). I've been driving the i4 M50 for 5 months and it's a lovely vehicle.
That grill< I cam't get past the ugly styling so full stop BMW. I've always admired the timeless and classy styling of BMW but this is ostentatious and not classy at all.
I live the interior, especially the colors on this car and the materials - reminds me of a 3rd gen TL. The front fascia is absolutely horrid, especially for an EV. BMW got lazy with utilization - they could have moved the control units to the side or in front of the axle and had space for a decent frunk.
This car just doesn't fit in, very confusing looks too much like an M4 seems like they definetely did not care and focused more on the electronic aspects. This is number 3 under the Polestar 2 and Tesla defintetely not something that beats the two in tech or "swedish" luxury but people will mainly get this car who are already BMW owners rather than new buyers that will stem more towards Tesla/Polestar/Rivian/GM
i remember when BMWs had a unique styling to them inside and out. these newer models have proven otherwise. this is sad. BMW interiors look like anything else mainstream with a bmw touch to it, vs being more bmw styling with tech integrated. i have owned multiple generations of bmws up to the F30, and anything since the G platforms has been cheap looking inside. What a disappointment. Otherwise, I really like the style of your reviews with both an infographic of sorts and live discussion side by side.
why do they need to build it from the ground up? It handles better than many bespoke EVs, just try driving, you will get impressed. It's just a tickbox in your head making no difference in real world. Also the consumption is exciting, same as TM3
@@KDR816 packaging could definitely be improved by having it on a bespoke platform but I agree it’s largely a tickbox for most people. It beats a lot of ground up EVs purely on driving dynamics and interior polish.

There is a video from someone in Europe comparing the i4 to the Polestar 2 and Model S.
Even with the SCN, I would choose this over a Tesla Model 3 any day. Yes, even with the grill and the stacked on curve display.

Only with the dual motor version. BMW was fairly honest in that cost was their biggest reason not to in the single motor i4.

Debating between this i4 M50 and the Polestar 2 Perf pack next year.
I’m also confused by their cargo capacity figure. The cargo area looks very similar to an Audi A5 sportback - Audi quotes 20 cubic feet for that car!
Some folk will count space up to the roof, others will stop below the back window glass.
WOW very different with all the reviews that I’ve ever seen, very informative.
I never thought of a “rack” as a “kinky part” but there might be some level of innuendo that I’m missing here 😮
The hump accommodates parts of the battery pack.
Good video as always, but this one Alex seemed like he had too much coffee or they doubled the speed of playback or something. Slow down dude.
First statement you made makes sense, it's a gas car with a battery
At the very least, BMW could provide a pocket for a portable EVSE under the hood. How hard could it have been??

As much as I dislike the BMW grill (and I have to admit they are growing on me), they have nothing on Toyota/Lexus.
Yes the ES is vile.
