Thanks for this review! I currently have a 21' Model 3 Perf and considering upgrading. I've looked at both, and now leaning toward the BMW. They're both great! Thankfully with more and more electric cars/SUV's coming out the luxury of choice becomes available. Thanks again!
@@sudeeptaghosh No, not as far as the electric car stats. It is in the features, color availability, and hatchback design that interests me over my 3 Perf.

Great, informative video, as usual, Alex! It's nice to see the differences between Tesla and BMW EVs. I would love a Model S, but my bank account would force me to the Model 3/BMW i4 price range.
I’m waiting for an i4 M50 allocation, but it seems for 2023 they have removed the adaptive cruise control as part of the Driving Assistant Professional package. For $77k that’s a deal breaker.
ACC option has been added back in for the MY23 M50 only. The MY23 eDrive40 will not have the option even with the mSport upgrade. Unfortunately, it appears there are still many eDrive40 pre-orders what will be converted to MY23 and will lose this option. I too am waiting for and M50 allocation.
Thanks, Alex! When EV charging times are no longer a point of discussion, there’s a fair number of RUclipsrs that will need to do a recalculation on their channel content.
@@skayofox maybe a little better now, but when I had my BMW i3, yes. It was pretty bad. At least where I am. I'm in a small town near Houston tx. In Houston there are more charging stations, but at the time only a few actually worked. Most of them were always having some type of work done, or off line. And the i3 didn't have that much range anyways. I often had to use the gas engine to keep me afloat. The M3 has been worry free regarding range and charging.
@@eusouocara23 oh well, that sucks! Hope they get that sorted. Non Tesla charging is also a little bit more troublesome over here, but it’s not that bad. Because of the prices, many Tesla owners now charge at third party chargers here too. And you can charge non Teslas at some Superchargers as well. So I Hope you guys get the same soon :)
My wife has a Tesla Model Y and I chose BMW I4 edrive40 when i gave my existing car to my son. Amazing driving dynamics, range and efficiency. Love both my cars and my 10 Yr old Diesel WK2 Jeep with 700 mile range that my son drives now. Only downside to BMW is not having access to the supercharger network.
One thing I did notice however, is that the typical "BMW driver" stereotype has seem to migrated over to the Tesla brand - I swear every time some idiot cuts in front or rides right up your behind, it is now always a Model 3 or Y these days vs. the 3 series or X5 doing it years ago. I would take the i4 any day of the week over any Tesla. Once you get past the 0-60 thing, there's not much the BMW is just better at than anything Tesla does for the same amount of price, especially so after tax credits.
Great video as usual, Alex. I'd like to see this comparison made between the Model S (with a round steering wheel, which is now standard) and the new i5.
Great review! Small correction on the suspension setup. The air suspension is standard equipment on the i4. Only the rear axle gets air suspension. The adaptive suspension is optional(still air suspension on the rear only).
I love all these direct comparisons and range tests you're doing Alex! They reveal all these various aspects and comparison points that folks might not otherwise have considered. I hope Elon Musk had fun being the only EV game in town, because for Tesla the rubber is about to quite literally hit the road. We're about to see what a luxury EV REALLY looks like. I can't wait for the comparison between a Tesla, a Beemer and the new Mercedes EVs that are coming out. I do agree that there seem to be a few compromises in the i4 that BMW had to make in order for the i4 to share its platform with their upcoming ICE cars. Mercedes definitely did NOT go in that direction IMHO; their EQS platform seems to go all in on "EVness" if you will. A shorter nose, better use of interior space, better aerodynamics (though oddly the EQS also has no front trunk LOL!)
The review is great, but a lot of the comparable features should have gone to the new i7 when looking at price comparisons. The 4 series is closer to a model 3 not an s.
About the long nose on the Model S it could also be for arodynamics as if you notice all the sliperest vihicles and things are shaped like darts... Even the Super ecobox that BMW made that got 100MPG on dino juice had a long nose... Which high speed object that ar blunlt are etheir space capsule for slowing down or things that are not effecnt but are really powerfull/don't care like modern planes.

Or when the i7 is available compare it to the model S Love the detail and your insight as always!! However, not sure if can see the value of this one. Thx!
Seems to me that BMW is targeting Tesla buyers to slow Tesla rather than going all in on EVs. When BMW produces an electric M3 on a dedicated EV platform then I’ll buy it. In the meantime, it’s a Model 3 or Y Performance for me. Also when buying an EV you are buying into the charging network and user interface in the car for trip planning. Tesla is years ahead on this very important area.
Not everyone's use case is to take their EV on long road trips. The furthest I drive mine is 160 mile round trip, which is well within the range of the car. I charge at home. I couldn't care less about the charging infrastructure. Plenty of people like me out there.
Interesting comparison - BMW was the past and is the future now - Tesla was the future and is now the past, they lost it...fun! Great that we have so much choice now!
Does the Model S have a more direct steering feel than the i4? I drove the i4 and it really lacks in feel. I used to have a Ford Fiesta St and that was the best steering I have ever experienced (believe it or not).
The build quality concern is an internet myth. Tesla has greatly improved quality. I4 - weight of a Model S with an interior smaller than a Model 3. Great job BMW.
@@jrherita It's not a myth. The interior of the i4 is leagues ahead of the Model 3, as is overall build quality. It's also a more expensive car. I'm not sure that too many people are cross-shopping these.
Except they aren't. Until someone releases a better electric car for the same price or less, people will continue to buy Teslas. Lucid / Rivian don't count, as they're substantially more expensive.
I have seen very few reports of markups in i4talk. Most people seem to be reporting no markups on orders. If you find a unicorn sitting on a lot, sure expect a markup starting at $10K at least. Very informative, Alex, but at 100,000 for the Model S, that is 3 times the price I paid for my Fusion Energi. The BMW is twice as much. The Tesla has the advantage of it’s own charging network, but I have not heard the price of electricity to recharge on that system. Even at $7/gal gas, my hybrid can still hold it’s own with what you presented in this video.
The BMW i4 exterior design is absolutely horrible... The "exhaust lookalike" design in the rear bumper is just disgusting - why the hell do you need to do this in a EV? Then the grille... well I kind of like the weird new grille BUT in the EU they slam the plate right in the middle of the grille obstructing the flow of the design - how the HELL didn't GERMAN car company take this into account.
