We bought a top trim Ioniq 5 in February and love it. We have two small kids so the interior size of the car made it the obvious choice. Every time I drive it or even see it in the garage it puts me in a good mood.

100% Ioniq 5, I love the design! Looks like something straight out of TRON. I would probably take the Genesis GV60 over the EV6 and then the BMW i4.

  • @t1328

I’m a car nut. Back in the 2000s, I was BMW all the way: After a particularly bad experience with a 2006 BMW 330i and local BNW dealer, I moved away from them but stayed primarily in German luxury/sport sedan territory. That changed with the Kia Stinger GT2. It was the closest new car at the time that I could find to the E39 BMW 540i.
When I switched to EVs, I got a Tesla Model Y. I was initially ok with it. It was sporty, fast, great sound system. But over time, it drove me crazy for many reasons, not least of which was how insanely bumpy it is if you live in an area with moderately poor roads, and then the phantom braking; which I had way more of than most. So I switched to the Ioniq 5 Limited AWD. I would have been equally happy with the EV6 GTL AWD, but found the Ioniq first. I couldn’t be happier with it. It’s sporty enough, yet very comfortable. It has insanely good safety systems that in real world driving are far better than Tesla’s in my view. It’s surprisingly luxurious, with materials that I would never have expected in a Hyundai 10 years ago. Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis mean business. Folks who are like me, traditional European luxury sports sedan or SUV buyers who ignore them outright because they’re “just a Hyundai “ are making a big mistake.

@@not_the_pasta yeah Hyundai is still using more plastics. But they’re very smart with the textures of their plastics, and the positioning of them. Now Genesis, particularly the GV70, is leagued ahead of BMW in terms of materials and luxury at a lower price. But Hyundai is not quite there, but still more than good enough.

@@t1328 Thanks for the comparision! Too bad Genesis is not yet available on my longitude. But have had few hyundais spaning 10 years. The change in attitude, design language, materials and handling is really noticeable, my first Hyundai was pretty much hard plastic on the inside compared to ioniq 5 limited now. I suspect Albert Biermann joining Hyundai had a really good impact on how the cars handle. As for Genesis afaik, ex Bentley designers are working there, the GV80 design language is reminiscent of that.
Have never owned German luxury brands so my opinion on those is flawed.

As for ioniq 5 limited awd, only thing I would have wanted is adaptive suspension that they put in 2022 Tucson, the car sometimes is too bouncy on our crappy roads. The mass distribution helps a bit, but not enough. That said, I know it was not meant for too much spirited driving, and the ioniq 5 N is coming up, they said they want i5 n to handle just as nimble as i30 n

I went for the EV6 dual-motor, ext range versus the Ioniq simply because it was available more readily without a 7k markup. Ultimately, I'm more happy with it than I think I would have been with the Ioniq because of the more enclosed, traditional cabin feel.
My goal was to find a Mach-E, as I'm a long-time Ford guy - but they're hard to find near Chicago and the ones I was offered had markups from 7 to 12,000!

I'm in the south also (and without ventilated seats) but the great thing about an EV (and some ICE vehicles) is that you can pre-condition the interior so it's perfect when you get in. And it can be scheduled both at home and at work. On top of that, while it's plugged in at home it's not even reducing its range while doing so. Was testing ionic 5 the other day. Not sure whats with car journalists, but they seem to be quite lazy when doing tests. Single engine, larger battery, full spec:
+ range was 400km with AC on and 125 - 130kmh on radar cruise control
    + exterior design is great
    - interior design is average. The lump around knee location sucks and changes ergonomics in a bad way
    - ergonomics is pretty shit all over. Especially for larger drivers. Hard to access touch screen, steering wheel not adjustable enough (seats adjustability is good though)
    + seats are pretty good
+ AC unit is very good
    - adjustment of the seat cooling sux. And is very agressive
    - usability of touch screen is very poor
    - reverse cameras on side mirrors are a very cool idea, but execution is not the best because steering wheel obscures the view
    - insanely annoying sounds and beeps non stop. Not a stress free car, not at all
    - when driving, its is comfortable most of the time. But you do feel its weight. In a bad way.
    - turning radius is very disappointing, especially since this is RWD
    + interior space is great
    - LED lights are below LED average
+ energy recoup adjustability is good
    - but annoyingly the most aggressive set up gets reset with every turn on of the car. Why?
    - lane assist is pretty shit
    - car is very quiet, but you are shocked how poorly sound insulated is on the sides. Shocked when you overtake a lorry, for example. No sound insulation in the doors, it seems. Plus, since car is so quiet, you get shocked even more
    - car key parking feature sucks.
    - trunk lid is supported by a motor, but its incredibly slow and annoying with its behavior
Thing with this car is that design overpromises. Its a lot better than the car deserves it to be. Adjust your expectations to the fact its still a hyundai and you will be less disappointed.

The i4 was good aswell, but i barely fit in the backsteat, and i'm not a tall guy, so unless you are driving with children and/or people under 1.70m (5'7?) it is not going to be a comfy ride (headspace in the back being the biggest issue). I was actually disapointed after testing the i4, it is a beautiful car, and it was fun to drive, but just not practical enough and felt small.

I like the BMW more than I expected to (from what I'm seeing), but the price goes way up with the usual options, and I'm not that confident of BMW reliability. Lease only, in other words. The Koreans are both interesting. I've seen more of the Kias around and like their looks, but I love the Hyundai and how it refers to several handsome 1970s cars, including the Hyundai Pony, designed by the Golf's deaigner with some similar design cues. To a Korean, the reference to the Pony is obvious, though most of us outside Korea see VW and Lancia (and maybe even Chrysler-Plymouth). It's a handsome car and its airiness greatly appeals to me, including the glass roof.

The ID4 is a weak competitor, but readonably priced for what it is. It's not as quick or as nicely equipped, band most importantly, charges far more slowly than the Korean models. It's more aensible in Europe or China, where people rarely drive long distances, than for the US. I think it's worth considering only if you're looking for a commuter vehicle that will be charged overnight, and have access to something else for any road trips you take. The Teslas charge barely fast enough for road trips (the long range is a help), bit the Kia and Hyundai are clearly the champs, and expansions and upgrades to the CCS charging infrastructure will make them even mote compelling. The ID4 can't compete with them.

I live in a fairly rural area so they either drive it frequently or we have opposite schedules. Either way, its exterior styling is the best of the bunch, but the Ioniq5 has a best interior. I was split between EV6 and i4; EV6 is about $20K cheaper for a little less battery life. EV6 looks nice and unique from outside and interior is spacious. Liked the left and right turn camera view right on the dashboard, instead of having to turn your head when making lane changes on the Kia. But...
The build quality and handling of BMW is legendary. You can't copy 100 years of pedigree in such short period of time.
Kia has come a long way. There was a time, less than 10-15 years ago, Kia was considered Asian junk or cheap. Inferior to Honda and Toyotas for sure.
I really liked the EV6 at first - if I didn't drive the i4 or it wasn't available (6 month wait though), I would seriously buy it.
I feel like while the EV6 looks clean and very well designed, it will be a novelty and dated soon because there will be a gazillion types of these new designs in few years, including from the top auto makers who will not let cars like EV6 and dated looking Teslas beat them at their own game.
When BMW, Audi, Bend, VW and Japanese makers start building EV cars from ground up (they have mostly used legacy gas platforms to build their EV), they will exceed the looks of current generation of Ioniq 6 and EV6 and esp Model X and Y.
Looking at the Ioniq 6 reminds me of a mix of Porsche and typical bland sleek design. Maybe even slicker looking than EV6 even if EV6 looks handsome now, it is lacking soul.
The interior build quality and driving and handling of BMW is 2nd to none. It spells pedigree and luxury class while I feel EV6 is just another futuristic clean looking ca with clean interior. What Tesla used to be.
I esp care about the resell value of EV. Nobody really aspires to own a KIA, while many here want to own a dreamy BMW. So it wouldn't be hard to sell it few years later plus it won't depreciate as fast. I pay $20K more for the i4 but I can sell it higher price and alot easier and easily recoup my $20K.
EV6 here with the longer battery version cost about $65K. BMW about $85 K.
But BMW has slightly longer range and in 5 years, the BMW will still worth about $60K while the Kia would quickly fall to $30K. I lose $25K with BMW and at least $35K with KIA. Esp the cost of EV will come down as production scales.
So it's not about the initial cost, it's about BMW ability to retain its value and stellar driving quality and interior design.
If you want bigger space, EV6 would be better option. They both seat similar number of people and I usually drive alone. Its almost no brainer for me BMW is the better car. While EV6 turns eyes and has that wow factor, it wouldn't be for long and I care about the drive and interior quality and comfort as I'm the one driving the car, not to impress others of that "wow" factor. People will still see BMW as a status symbol. I know some people don't care about that. But at least BMW has 100 years of pedigree with a EV twist. But performs better than most BMW gas versions. Tho, charge slower than EV6 but there aren't many 800V 350 kw charge stations around.
