For a EV it’s not bad, coming from a Tesla model 3 performance owner I can’t see the value in comparison since the 3P is faster and about 10k cheaper. But I do feel the bmw does look nicer and definitely is more luxurious.
In the UK the M3P with metallic paint (standard on the BMW) is £61,000, so less than £2,000 difference. What would be massively different would be the build quality with the BMW being on a different planet in terms of quality of materials and build quality.
@JOHN BOWATER not sure what your talking about. The panel gap isn’t much different than what I’ve seen from other manufactures, plus Tesla comes out your home to fix any discrepancies you report. as far as interior design goes, it’s subjective but also minimalistic. As for the bmw interior is although good quality, it’s still just a copy n paste from all its other models, they had the opportunity to build this from ground up but decided not to, plus it still has that ugly useless and hideous fake grills.
Another excellent review Matt. I drive a 330e and want to move to a full electric car so been waiting for a review of this since it was announced. Was leaning towards a Kia EV6 GT but the i4 M50 looks a better option for similar money. Look forward to you putting it up against a Model 3, EV6 GT and Mach-E! EV geeks will love that!
It works well on them as does on Audi’s, it just messes up every now and then much like Siri and Alexa. It’s just pointless in a car when you can do everything yourself. The only time it’s worth using voice assistants is with CarPlay and using Siri to communicate with people as you have no other way to control your phone.
That's because your phone has better software. What I don't understand is why do some car companies spend all that money to develop their own software and not just use android or carplay since there is no way it will be as good.
Very true. Tried a Volvo XC40 BEV with the google system. Brilliant. All manufacturers should leave their expensive useless self developed systems and leave it to the experts.
I actually had to set my 3 series to english for the personal assistant because the italian version doesn't understand nearly the same amount of commands and phrases in general...
I really like that it is a hatchback! The normal limousine trunks are so unpractical. I had a Ford Fiesta MK2 or 3 and a BMW E46 220. In the Ford my bicycle fitted in the car, in the BMW I had to remove the front wheel to fit.
Back end styling is great! I can live with the "diffuser" channels in place of exhaust, that works well. Now give the design team who came up with the rear's design a chance at the front. It can only get better from where it's at now. That buck-tooth rat grill is really holding this car back.
The i4's Grille looks better than the one on the 4 Series because the lines arround the grille are different. (If you notice, the black parts around the bottom half of the big grille are sort of hiding half of the size of it 🤔)
I love the looks of this car. However, wouldn't it be better to compare this car to other EV's instead of comparing it to a M3 and then conclude it is not as much fun? :)

That's just the point. Someone like me (a traditional enthusiast for older BMWs) isn't going to buy a car as different to the ICE models as the i3 or iX. I don't care how good it is. I buy a BMW because it drives well, is comfortable and I like the way it looks and handles. To misquote Meat Loaf - 1 out of 3 is bad.

I'm not sure that the Model 3 buyer is the same as a BMW buyer. The Model 3 has a $35k car interior for a luxury car price (in Performance trim).
BMW will probably launch the new i3 (electric 3 series) next year along with the 3 series Facelift. Might want to also see how that turns up.

The voice recognition on my £150 phone is really good. It always amazes me that it works so poorly in a £60k car.
It works well on them as does on Audi’s, it just messes up every now and then much like Siri and Alexa. It’s just pointless in a car when you can do everything yourself. The only time it’s worth using voice assistants is with CarPlay and using Siri to communicate with people as you have no other way to control your phone.
Matt’s always said that BMW have the best voice assistant but on my 3 series now it’s shockingly bad. Still not as bad as my Audi A3 used to be though
@@renato136 this car doesn't have android auto or carplay?
I actually had to set my 3 series to english for the personal assistant because the italian version doesn't understand nearly the same amount of commands and phrases in general...
The grille on this car looks surprisingly good. Way better than the regular 4 series 2 door.
I know right! I was just thinking the same as I was watching the video. Looks so much better than the M3/M4 too.
I am feeling that there are so many different eyes in this world. How could this be seen good? Well their views...
I love the interior and those wheels !
The i4's Grille looks better than the one on the 4 Series because the lines arround the grille are different. (If you notice, the black parts around the bottom half of the big grille are sort of hiding half of the size of it 🤔)
Yeah, it doesn't really look like it's smiling/smirking at you anymore

Quick question, does it have a froot?
Or what has the bonnet space been used for?
Also, congrats Mat on having a new family member.
It doesn't,you can open the bonnet but there are only cables and mechanical parts
As an i3 owner, I know how BMW can make amazing electric cars. I'm a bit disappointed though how they are making an electric and ICE car on the same platform. They put so much attention to detail in the i3 from material usage to visibility and comfort. Sad to see them go this way ..
That's just the point.
Someone like me (a traditional enthusiast for older BMWs) isn't going to buy a car as different to the ICE models as the i3 or iX. I don't care how good it is. I buy a BMW because it drives well, is comfortable and I like the way it looks and handles. To misquote Meat Loaf - 1 out of 3 is bad.
they should have at last gave us an ICE range extension option like the i3
Had the i4 M50 as a loaner. It made me sick at first until I got down the one pedal driving. I wanted to hate it. But something about the power is addicting... I am now loaning the X3 M50 petrol and it feels antiquated. Especially for the price to power, it's unreal - like driving a rollercoaster.
I think this is the first time you are far mistaken. You should consider that place A and place B are the same sea level. Otherwise your mileage estimation is going to be far off the real one. Eg if you climb down this mountain you ll see that your est mileage is going to rise instead of falling. Regret to proving you wrong.....a fan of yours.
What’s interesting is that he got motion sick due to the lack of connection with the vehicle. He mentioned no sound from acceleration and it throws off our mental sync with the mechanical feel of the automobile so we can’t accurately mentally prepare for acceleration or maneuvers..
True point indeed, wierd. @Matt is this with all EV's you test. get motion sickness. Interesting development. First time I hear about this, getting sick in an EV.. Especially since you have a daily M4 you can do the comparison.
17:04, a full battery should take you 293 kilometers, not miles.
(293km is just 182 miles).
That’s basically what I get in my 18 i3 😬😬😬

Hang on if you only covered 185km and have 37% battery left, you would only be able to cover ~300 km or 192 miles, which is miles short of the claimed range of 300 miles!
I’ve never been able to hit the claimed range of my diesel either… The number is just for comparison between cars, depending on how you drive the real number can be higher or lower. ICE cars tend to be more efficient on the highway while BEV are more efficient in city’s.
I am so excited about this car, I always wanted an M3/4 EV and BWM actually did it.

However, as Matt says Carwow can help you find the best price for your used car so having pre-ordered the i4 M50 so sadly contemplating selling my beloved M2. A word of warning to others thinking of selling via Carwow, they do not find your best price as they dictate the range often below what you will readily see on auto trader, they will not advertise your car if above this range therefore effectively capping the sale figure which is disappointing and not in the customers best interests, shame.
