I agree 100% that a rig with too much hardware... especially metallic hardware... will spook Mr. Pomp. I think the only thing they really attract is Bluefish... When the Bluefish are running.. the more flash the better. But Bluefish arent my Target fish... I am a Pompano fisherman... and Pomps being slid up the sand is my mission. Great Video! Keep'em Coming!
Winner of a video, I have been researching "surf fishing truck platform" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you heard people talk about - Wenayden Xenaylee Blaster - (do a search on google ) ? Ive heard some super things about it and my colleague got amazing results with it.
I go to great lengths to tie beautiful rigs with complicated knots for the best presentation possible. Then the old man right next to me catches a monster redfish with the Walmart garbage.
Very helpful! Just started surf fishing. I’m in Puerto Rico and have caught one pámpano with a single drip rig that I tied myself very inexpertly. We catch our own sand fleas so hopefully this will help!
Stay tuned, I couldn’t get my Subscriber Giveaway Vid done today 1/18 but it’ll drop tomorrow morning 1/19 sometime! 5 PompChews winners and 1 Vintage Penn 720 Grennie winner for topping 300 subs will be ANNOUNCED!
Walmart is not my first choice for gear, BUT..it's only 5 min away, and with a bit of knowledge, you can come out of there with a decent rig. I started with their Tsunami Pompano Pro Rig (TS-PPR).. it has those 2/0 hooks you mentioned.. probably too big. The selection of smaller hook rigs, didn't have floats, and they were not available to purchase. Solution: buy the 2/0 rig and swap out the hooks for a Mustad 1/0 Demon Perfect Offset Circle type. Swapping out the hooks can be done in under a minute. I've caught Blues and Pompano with this setup.
Those first two rigs I use for shark, blues, reds, trout, and croaker now for more savvy fish yes those first two rigs aren't good but at that point I'd use a slip Bobber or a slip sinker with fluorocarbon or a low vis mono or a triple swivel rig for the more savvy fish. anyway tight lines yall
Luke McCardle thanks for that comment! I can go over-the-top sometimes. Fish can be caught on the heavy duty stuff but overall I think you’ll be more consistent with bigger fish using the other rigs. Thanks for adding your experience it helps the overall content of the channel!
Wow bro you really know your stuff I learned a lot from the video about those Walmart rigs that you said we're no good I've used them and caught hardly anything, I live in Maryland we fish off Assateague Island in the Atlantic Ocean but I'm sure I can use that rig that you're suggesting for the Pompano would work what do you think? Good video you're very informative
Sorry if I missed it below in previous comments, but have you published a video about how you tie your single drop rig with the extra long leader? I take pride in and enjoy tying my own rigs and I'd like to give your single dropper rig a try. Thanks for the great videos!
I can't tell what kind of vehicle it is but I'm assuming it's a truck. Who buys a truck and cares about the paint. It's not a sports car. When you buy a truck you use it. I purchased a brand new truck it had 80 miles on it by the time I got it home. The first thing I did was take it back in the woods rolling down a trail. Put little scratches all down the side, but I never paid atention to it till someone pointed it out to me. My answer was "yeah so it's a truck." 🤷🏻♂️
I just spent about 3 months in Myrtle Beach cause here soon, I'm gonna be moving to either Myrtle Beach or southern Florida. But I literally fished about 2 and a 1/2 months out of the 3, and I didn't catch 1 pomp while there. And I even caught my own sand fleas. But I had ZERO luck with those high-low or triple drop rigs. I honestly didnt have alot luck at all until I started learning and tying my own rigs. LEARN TO TIE YOUR RIGS!! It's not hard, and its actually fun learning it.
robert gagnon - driving to Murrells inlet tomorrow to fish and look for jobs and places. Been tying rigs all week. Many different types, haven't caught a pompano either. Hopefully some of these I've tied work, I did have fun makin them. Gonna sit on pier and practice and give some away to see what works. Thanks for posting, Im not the only one trying to move to the coast for a while. Needed a reason, now I've got a good one. Gonna fish every second I can while there and not driving around doing recon.
@@FishGum and to be honest about it, I bought 4 or 5 different packs of fish bites while down there, and Idk if it was the fact that I was using store bought rigs when using it or if its just the fish in the Myrtle Beach and murrells inlet area, but in MB, the only thing that would touch the stuff was little bait thieves. In the inlet, NOTHING would touch it!! Again, Idk if it was the store bought rigs or if it was the fish. I literally tried 3 or 4 different flavors, some of the flavors in different color variants. All flavors and colors that should've drove the fish NUTS!! but not a single bite worth touching the rod over. Next time imma try it on a hand tied rig and see if that makes a difference. If it doesn't, imma try some fish gum. Maybe that'll work up here.
This is the BEST video on Rig for Surf fishing out there.. Thank you FishGum for sharing the secrets.. After wasting money on the junks I learned that I have to rig own leaders ..the simpler the better.. By the way do you use Fluorocarbons line on your rigs?.. One day we hire you as fishing guide when we visit Florida... Thank you
This was a really helpful video for new fishermen. Thanks... I just finished making my own rig which is real close to what you are suggesting. I think I used the correct size hook but I guess I'll find out tomorrow.
I use the single drop mono rig from Boone, like the first when I'm fishing these dark tannin water like St. George Island bridge and Ochlocknee Bay Bridge.... usually with cut bait, crab, larger dead bait.
@@FishGum Alot of inshore species. In the last few trips we've caught Reds, Big Uglies and puppies, Sail Cats (I know, trash but I eat the mess out of them), variety of sharks, Whiting, Sand and Speckled Trout... Craziest recent catch was a huge longnose gar on the Eastpoint bridge on a live finger mullet... on a Boone mono rig. We've used Fish Gum almost every trip this summer, BTW. Love it in both surf and backwater/bay/marsh. We've caught everything....except a daggum Pomp on it so far.
For my annual month of April surf fishing jaunt to Florida's East Coast, I dip painted my pyramid sinkers bright orange. The unpainted 4 ounce sinkers held better than the dip painted ones, evidently due to the smoothness of the dip paint. I was surprised by that finding.
I tie my own versions of those rigs with far less going on and have caught monster Black Drum on them while I lived in Texas. Up here in the North East I down size the line and hooks for winter flounder but still I tie my own with less flash.
Those first two rigs you showed are a pain in the ass at the jetty everytime I get snagged up on them I lose my whole rig I've brought back a bunch of them and I just cut them up and pieces and throw them on the ground it takes 2 seconds to tie the dropper loop knot and it's very easy to tie
Hope you still read comments: On multiple hook rigs, you can lower them by adding a small egg sinker to your main line above the swivel... Egg sinker weight depends on condition, casting will be strange at first...
Coming in late to the comments, maybe this has already been covered - didn't fully scan the comments. But on the WM rigs... why not just use a long leader off the snaps to your hook? Almost just like the one of the rigs you say you like the most? I'm so new to surf fishing I haven't even gone yet... but having already bought the WM rig I was not planning on simply putting a hook straight on the snap... regardless, excellent video, and yes I'll build some rigs and shop for others.
I know this is an old video but I am going surf fishing this summer LOL. Why would you not put a 2nd dropper loop with a float on the single rig up in front? That way you have one floating in addition to the bait that is natural looking on the bottom?
Bill Kennedy, if your talking about Bama Beach Bum Matthew Isbell, he’s a good one to learn from. It’s so neat how we do things a little different, he fishes 2oz Pyramid weights and I prefer solely 4 Oz. He uses about 9 foot rods and I use 12 foot. Do you live over on the bama gulf coast?
I’ve never used a Sputnik, maybe I should. I have never heard the rule 1oz per 1 foot of wave that’s pretty cool and makes total sense. I primarily stick with 4oz so I can increase my casting range. Those baits will sail a country mile or to Cuba (to quote BBB). I am honored to have your input! Thanks for sharing all you have. I’m ALWAYS learning and love to try new things and invent a little too.
As a bass fisherman from Georgia who enjoys surf fishing when at the gulf for family vacation I appreciate the info in this video. I usually do fish with store bought rigs and like he said I catch a tons of cats and other trash fish.I will give these tips a go and report back. Thanks
Great vid. I subscribed to your channel. I just got into surf fishing. My background is bank fishing freshwater lakes. Totally new to salt water. I'm in Destin, so I'm not too far from you.
Are you local to navarre? We vacation there once a year at the pearl or summerwind right beside the pier. We're actually going sep. the 1st this year. What fish would you target at that time? Love your videos btw. Been watching them back to back now for over 2 hours. lol And yes, of course I sub'd. ;)
Thanks for the presentation lots of info, great looking hat. I would wear one myself. My wife and I are going to be going on a road trip to Louisiana in the spring and have to go right by orange beach. Would you be willing to meet up and fish? It would be fun . Over here on the east coast we have to chase the pomps 100 miles and if your not in a click, it's hit or mostly miss. God bless.
It might work out, shoot me a comment when you are in the area. I actually live in Navarre, Florida. Will you be passing through Pensacola Beach/Navarre Beach?
Hey I’m in Navarre Fl. I fish behind Rob’s shop I’m trying to get into fishing but as a novice I have been going on the sound side. I’d love to fish the surf with you or Navarre pier some time.
Aaron Allen, the way I approach surf fishing outfitting is right bait, right rig and right line (braided)! Many people come from all walks of life and have different types of rods and reels already. So you don’t need to have the 12 rods and bigger 704z reels like I use. Fish with what you have and you can still catch great fish! I am not too worried about the type of rod and tee you own. It’ll work! I plan of filming a lot using a variety of rods and reels to show that you can fish with the stuff you already have.
Fish Gum I’m fishing with braided line with 30 lb test. I keep it simple. I have spoon, popping forks and usually use Carolina rig. It’s one of the reasons I never really did surf fishing because I’m new. I caught some nice red and black drums
Aaron Allen, that’s perfect! You’ll be ok rigging that with a 2oz pyramid, and making gentle casts and setting it up with a Pompano Rig. I fished with some friends whom I told to bring their own rods. One friend showed up with a 1970s zebco rod and reel. With the right bait and rig he landed a Pompano on it. That made me feel good!

Fifty years ago my first trip to Montauk Point, NY we caught 15 lb fluke, 30 lb alligator blues, 5lb porgies, 8lb sea bass, 10 lb tautog, 40lb striped bass.Today your lucky to catch a 3lb fluke, 5lb bluefish, 1lb porgy, 2lb seabass, 2lb tautog, 4lb striped bass. I guess im spoiled.
Jim Callaham, I used to tie that “natural rig” without a swivel and it was a mess because of the current. Your right the swivel does the job and keeps the line from tangling. Let me know what you catch this season!!!!
I live in Kansas and catfish a lot . I'm coming to Navarre Beach in the middle of September will I be wasting my time going fishing or will these rigs you suggest be what I use to catch fish that time of year . Again I'm ignorant when it comes to surf fishing but really want to try
great video. Have been using mostly single drop rigs for years. I like the long length of your rig. However I find that if I go more than 12" or so they just tangle up and are useless. what do you do in heavy surf and current to prevent the tangles?
Jim Callaham the swivel from the hook line to the main line helps a whole lot from it getting tangled. However, if you notice the line is still getting tangled you’ll have to shorten the hook line a bit. Also, if there is heavy slimy June Grass it will cause it to tangle. Hope that helps. You may have to experiment to find the right length of the hook line to minimize tangles. Also, the longer hook line should be good in 1-2 foot waves, you’ll have to shorten the line when waves are >3 feet. Thanks for the question!!!!
Aaron Allen, there is a red tide present at Navarre Beach, however it is not as bad as it was in 2015. That year fish were dying and washing up on shore. I think that with the cold fronts coming through it should lower the water temp and the red tide algae should die off. That’s good news. It is affecting Surf Fishing because fish will seek clearer water with higher oxygen levels. I have not attempted to fish because last time I went out my eyes burned, throat hurt, and coughed from the red tide. I caught nothing that day. The sound is fine! Good luck! Maybe in a couple of weeks the red tide will be gone, the water looks better each day on the Navarre Beach Cam.
Aaron Allen, those stingray fight like heck!!! I will probably get out to Navarre Beach this Saturday AM, with a couple of friends, I will let you know for sure Friday. Your welcome to join.
Fish Gum i work 11-8 Saturday :( I’m going to head out there tomorrow morning and see how the tide is. I am hoping the cold front dispersed the red tide. I may surf the bayside underneath the Navarre bridge. Didn’t catch anything except the ray.
Hey Fish gum, was just wondering, can you make a double drop rig but make the upper drop the length so that it is closer to the sand floor. Or do you think that could cause a casting problem or twisting problem? Thanks Good video
Man I have changed a lot! The longer the leader and size of leader the more prone to twisting! It you tie it low low, that’s fine as long as you’re using pyramid weights and not Sputniks. You can get away with 17 lb test in a majority of water conditions. However 15-14-12 lb test will twist on you in 2 foot wave conditions and greater. The longer the leader the more prone to twisting, the heavier the leader the less prone to twisting. I think we should use light leaders but only if we are dealing with less than 2 foot waves.

Thanks for the info, good to know, but here in West coast of Southern California, no Pampano or other species from East Coast beaches.
So with that last setup are you saying to use more in summer? Won't the crabs still attack that if it is just sitting on the floor?

What pound test mono do you use for your rigs? Next time I'm down on the coast, rigging up single drops with a long leader seems like the ticket.
Just remember to shorten the single drop if the current or waves are strong. It will tangle up the long line. I use 20lb SeaGuar Flurocarbon. Thanks

what size round floats works best for you or you like best?
I think smaller the better 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch

Ebay has some floats, and I use 12 foot rods mostly

It might work out, shoot me a comment when you are in the area. I actually live in Navarre, Florida. Will you be passing through Pensacola Beach/Navarre Beach?
I live in vero beach fl so I can make that happen. Plenty of time to plan. Thanks.
Hey I’m in Navarre Fl. I fish behind Rob’s shop I’m trying to get into fishing but as a novice I have been going on the sound side. I’d love to fish the surf with you or Navarre pier some time.
Aaron Allen, thanks for reaching out, I will let you know next time I go out to surf fishing! Cya
Fish Gum thanks, I have a Penn Fierce II 4000. Is it too small for the surf?
My gosh that’s incredible!!!!!! Thanks for sharing!
okay ,tried the rig this this pm. soaked fish bites on it for about 2 hrs .no tangles, that swivel does it's job
Jim Callaham, I used to tie that “natural rig” without a swivel and it was a mess because of the current. Your right the swivel does the job and keeps the line from tangling. Let me know what you catch this season!!!!
That wire rig also is more for catching whiting , redfish. Redfish aren't leader shy fish
Thanks
Yeah redfish and whiting got some sharp teeth. They chomp through my 30lb fluorocarbon all the time. I need one of them Walmart rigs.
I live in Kansas and catfish a lot . I'm coming to Navarre Beach in the middle of September will I be wasting my time going fishing or will these rigs you suggest be what I use to catch fish that time of year . Again I'm ignorant when it comes to surf fishing but really want to try
There’s a little learning curve but you can master things fast!
Pompano are site fish they like shine. The mono rigs catch consistently
Good video, the hat is awesome.
There are some good rig options out there, and some bad ones!
great video.
Also those are bottom fishing rigs. Like low light. Deep.
Two comments? Did your feels get hurt about the Walmart trash rigs?
@@andrewsanford2020 ????
Whats with plastic coating the 4 once weight ? Whats that for ?
It’s added color to attract fish
@@FishGum OK
How do you tie your drops? New Smyrna Beach
Dropper loops
Would you please make the for yellow jack fishing
Thanks for this video. Very good info, but I have to say that the bouncing the weights on the hood of the car made me cringe...every single time.
I’ll be careful next time!
I'll have to disagree with the first to yeah they might not be the best but they are convenient and do catch a variety of surf fish
Thanks for disagreeing! Your right! From experience you’ll have greater success at catching more fish by selecting other premade options
Wonder if that weight left any scratches.
Yeah my hood took a lil beating
Where do you find those square yellow floats? I’m tryna find the same exact ones as in this video

They have a great selection of floats
Love the hat
Bill Kennedy thanks man! I get a lot of compliments on it!
This is 100 percent right
Nice hat sir,,,
Thanks
Do you have a link to show the single drop rig?
Here ya go! ruclips.net/video/RMURS8EPjrM/видео.html
@@FishGum Nice!!!! Thanks!! I will try it on the East Coast of Fl.
Great info!
LongviewGarage, I hope it helps, it’s things I’ve observed along the way. Still learning though!!!
Hey I’m not really sure but I hear Navarre has high concentrate of red tide. Is the sound okay to fish? And could you cook and eat the fish?
I’ve been in the sound two days and 0 irritation it’s lively at Navarre half hitched just hooked a stingray about 10 mins ago
Aaron Allen how did it turn out fishing?
Love the hat!
I got plans to sell some one day!
Beating the hell out of that hood.
Lol! I sure did! I love my old truck
How do we have the same reel
Great minds think allike
