    I'm back at the beach after a few weeks visiting with family and friends in my hometown. I have noticed many people may have the wrong idea about how to approach surf fishing in our area, so I want to address how you can do it in a more effective and successful way!
    Also, this is my first video with the new GoPro Hero 7 Black. It's really cool but the audio from the GoPro isn't conducive for the beach because of all the mics picking up the noise from the surf. I have ordered a mic and hope this will solve the issue, but for now I apologize for the audio issues.

    have to be clear we're talking a specific area. maybe some newbies won't get that. the North Carolina coast for instance... definitely the bread and butter fish is going to be croaker/whiting, spots and pompano with some small flounder almost all the time except for dead winter... but the fall and spring run is well known for drum and bluefish and everyone is heading out with big tackle.

    • @BamaBeachBum
      @BamaBeachBum  5 лет назад +4

      Yes, that’s why I was specific when I said northern Gulf Coast. Fishing in other areas are obviously completely different. But same principle applies in the overall theme of the idea in that you need to target what is present and not try to force a square peg in a round hole.

      Bama Beach Bum i have to admit I was doing it wrong back when I first started out. but finally figured out (NC beaches) that most of the fish I was hoping for were feeding close to the beach on sand crabs and other delicious stuff being turned up by the waves ...and I have to show up just before sunrise. oh yeah cut the bait a lit smaller. 1/3 inch pieces of shrimp or blood worms usually caught enough for a fish fry within a couple hours. now I'm in Bali and totally confused again. love your channel and hope your sub base grows a lot in the New Year.

    You couldn't be more right. I live near Dauphin Island. When I surf fish, I always bring 2 setups. One for throwing out biiig chunks of bait in hopes of a massive Drum/shark or anything that gives a fight and another setup for basic surf fishing. Just yesterday, couldn't get any hits on live croaker, cut mullet, etc. Then I hoooked into my PB black drum on a Pompano rig with a size 8 J hook on 8lb test using a piece of a FishBites the size of a penny while trying to target whiting. The fight was crazy fun on that light tackle! The surf on DI has been rough..zero whiting. I definitely gotta try the surf in Gulf Shores. Tight lines, love to support a local YT channel!

    You nailed it Bama Beach Bum Buddy! Like I been tellin folks for years "often 95% of the fish in the surf zone weigh less than a pound. You said it just right, BBB, about TARGETING particular species. That's the key to fishing in the area, whether in the surf or from the pier. I've been catching them (whiting) up to 18 inches in December, mostly on pink fishbites and shrimp pieces - same as you're doing. Hoping for weather to calm down and for the water to clear up. Keep up the good videos. They're entertaining and instructive.

    I got to go to Gulf Shores a couple years ago for summer vacation. I'm from Oklahoma and had never fished in the Gulf. Bought some fish bites from the store. My buddy and me caught enough of those whiting (the size you were keeping) to fill a small ice chest every day we fished. Only problem is we didn't know what they were since we had never been there before. Looked like something you'd throw back here in Oklahoma. Lol. Last day I was there I decided to sit down and look up what they were. Once I told my buddy we had been throwing away keepers we had a good laugh about it. Haven't made it back since to catch anymore.

Keeping four rods baited up is too much like a job. To each his own, its a big beach. Plenty of room for all.

    Here in Texas, I started to tie 6 hook leaders. Using a video you had up about "how to tie Pompano rigs" I took that knot and just made the tag shorter and more hooks. I use a kahle hook on the smaller side and no beads on 30 and 50# mono with mainly fishbites. Dude I literally use this rig for everything in the surf. Reds love it, Pompano love it, Black Drum love it, I've caught 5 and 6 Whiting at a time and the same with Sand Trout in the bay. It works so good I have folks stop and ask me about the rigs. I make like 100+ of these rigs sometimes and sell them as I fish on the beach. I have one video up of a drum I caught with one of these rigs. I need to invest in a body cam to get my RUclips channel going. But yeah, Love your videos buddy.

    This should have been the first video of yours I should have watched. I'd been wondering why you used so much light tackle at the beach and can see it's more fun. A couple of times having been spooled estuary fishing in Nassau sound north of Jax 20 lb test was barely enough. Now that I have a long drive to beach fish I'll take some lighter tackle, but I will have one heavy rod for live baiting. As long as I don't kill a shark I will want a chance to catch a big scaley fish.

    • @randystone4903
      @randystone4903 2 года назад

      Love Nassau sound in the 80's, did a lot of wading the mud flats around oyster bars. Had my reel instantly turned into a birds nest free lining 8" mullet during a September full moon. This was before jet skis, water side development, and the new bridge. My best was a red drum as long as my leg during the blackened redfish frenzy. It was hard on me to let that drum go free, but glad I did.

    Hey man, love your videos. Just moved to NW Florida and I am learning a lot about fishing these waters from you. Question about your gear: I've been looking for beads and those small floats you use (like on the rig in this video and your pompano rigs). What size beads do you use? Also, where can I get some of those floats, or which do you buy and mod for your rigs?

    It looked like your circle hook was on the dropper loop from outside the bight, you will have a better hook up ratio if you push the loop in from inside the bight of the hook

  • @saltwaterrook4638
    @saltwaterrook4638 5 лет назад +2

    Man I'm glad we have some greedy Whiting here. I only use 2/0 and 3/0 kale hooks and never have a problem catching a cooler full of em. Most of em get cut into shark bait. Some to fish tacos.

    • @BamaBeachBum
      @BamaBeachBum  5 лет назад +2

      I used to only use 1/0 and 2/0 circle hooks. I’ve caught plenty of whiting on them as well. But I have noticed a drastic difference in quantity and speed of bite when I downsize for them. But some days, they do make it easy for you!

    • @saltwaterrook4638

    Based on their mouths, are Whiting predominantly bottom feeders? If so, with a pompano rig, and braid, doesnt the bait hang a bit above the sand, especially with a 3 hook setup? Wouldn't a Carolina rig work better?
    Just wondering

    • @BamaBeachBum
      @BamaBeachBum  5 лет назад +2

      Carolina rigs are killer for whiting! Just not stationary and tough to run multiple rods.

    • @bobravenscraft5376
      @bobravenscraft5376 5 лет назад +1

      I make my own callrd a guppy rig pyramid weight on bottom and tie large loop24inch 12 inches above thebottow it makes the bait sway kinda close to bottom without lying in mud or sand. The swim about 3inches off bottom so works well in a harbor use swivel barrel weight hook for flounder snapper i use to go once a month i miss it good luck

    • @finnafishfl
      @finnafishfl 5 лет назад +1

      Most drum species have a subterminal mouth and, like red drum, still get up and over even topwaters to eat em. High low rig is fine for Whiting, which are just smaller species of drum.

    • @soloassault007
      @soloassault007 5 лет назад

      If u consider the angle the line runs back to the rod if it’s not on the bottom it’s very close with a pampano rig

    • @PompanoBrownie
      @PompanoBrownie 5 лет назад

      I use my Pompano rigs exclusively, and whiting hit on them if they are running.
