Just wanted to thank you for your advice, I’m novice to beach fishing but did exactly what you said and caught fish on every cast! My little boy was very excited, you rock!
I happened to notice your comment and just randomly thought I'd share but you may want to consider trying salted baits at least as a backup. You can save alot of money, waste, and frustration...especially if you are re-baiting for yourself and others. Plus it could be something else you and your son enjoy together. You can use any soft body animal from the sea but shrimp and squid have been what I've used most. You can shell fresh to almost about to spoil shrimp, let it sit in Kosher salt for 3 days and now have a bait that's 10x stronger on the hook, easier to handle as far as no smell or mess, doesn't need refrigeration and when the birds catch you slipping...they usually drop it a time or 2 bc the extra salt surprise which can be quite funny and you keep your shrimp. If I have to walk way out to cast I'll cut a few pieces for the shirt pocket so if I get cleaned I can avoid the walk back to the cooler. I wouldn't recommend that with fresh bait of any kind! Also if you don't fish very often it keeps forever on a shelf in the garage so it's one less thing to rebuy when you head out. Hope this was a interesting read if nothing else, I know if I were helping teach a kid to fish the simpler the better. I can remember growing up when my dad and I discovered or learned something together it was all the more special, even if sometimes he was just acting and wanted to have a laugh at my expense lol!
I purchased a saltwater reel and rod combo for 20 bucks. Some of the items you showed me, and two bags of frozen shrimp and I caught fish all day. Nothing to crazy because I just wanted to learn how to fish and I didn’t care what I caught. Thank you!
Here's a Pro-Tip (you're gonna thank me for later): When tying this type of "improved clinch knot" using *MONOFILAMENT* line (*specifically*) you can use some saliva/spit (this is usually the most convenient) or anything wet really, such as water, to lubricate your line on the bit you just twisted before cinching your knot down, as shown @ 2:20 --this will help prevent the mono from stretching and warping, which will ultimately improve the strength of your line and help reduce break-offs. I believe this phenomena is sometimes referred to as 'Mono Burn' or something like that, but you can test it and see for yourself by tying one each way and looking at how disfigured your line becomes with no lubricant. I promise you will notice a difference, you can even feel the mono heat up after you cinch it down -go ahead and grab the knot and it will be super hot to the touch! That heat is why you need to be careful and try to avoid by keeping your line cool with lubricant and going S L O W when cinching the knot down. I'm always sure to add in this little detail when tying this knot once I figured out what all was going on. It just makes sense, and it really does help improve the overall strength of your rig and help you land more fish!!! ✔✔✔✌😎👍✔✔✔ cheers, -Fred
A little background on what may make this spot productive. If you look to the right, you may see that the waves cease to churn at a certain point. This indicates a cut in the sand that predatory pelagic fish use to herd bait fish. You may also notice that the waves break further out than they should. This indicates a trough between the first break and the break closer to shore. Troughs are essentially fish highways. This area seems riddled with sandbars and many other forms of interesting soft bottom structure. Fish cruise the void for days on end seeing nothing. Any structure interests them. When getting skunked, casting into a cut or trough may change things dramatically. However, you generally want to cast past the trough and let your lure/bait enter the area as living bait would.
' if you're a girl, or just don't like blood' I dunno man I think they're probably more accustomed to it than we are lmao Very informative vid! Thanks!
This was great, thanks, been searching for "surf fishing torquay" for a while now, and I think this has helped. You ever tried - Wenayden Xenaylee Blaster - (do a google search ) ? Ive heard some amazing things about it and my m8 got amazing success with it.
Great video, I appreciate the simple “teach by example” approach and how little fat you had on your video. Straight to the point. Informative. Thank you sir.
Jeff Excellent beginner's tutorial. One edit I would make is the part where you tie the knot. I was always told when I was about ten (now 70+) and everyone I know agrees that you never pull that knot tight without lubricating it. Saliva, water, anything that will cut down the tremendous amount of heat generated when mono slides over mono (same applies to braid) getting increasingly tight and does not permit the knot to fully seat. Failure to follow this simple rule will reduce your knot strength by up to an additional 80% and many knots reduce the line strength just by their nature. (Yes I saw on Google that a Dupont engineer debunks this but that is refuted by numerous guides and others that get paid for putting fish in the boat!) I was really nervous when Kristi took her swim. No rod and reel is worth going fully clothed in cold water. Glad it turned out well and everyone had a laugh. (You saw how concerned the marine police were. They deal with the bad things that happen under similar circumstances.) Wish I had been around for your "tournament."

That’s not an improved clinch. That’s just a standard clinch knot. You needed to go through that final loop you created at the end before pulling tight. Also, always lubricate the knot with some water or spit to prevent abrasion and assist with tightening it. Lived in New Bern.. fished the sound and the banks beaches often. love it just pay attention to the time if your on the islands.. miss the last ferry, you're camping lol
I fished with bait once when I was 8 years old and went straight to lures ,… never touched bait ever again… I also graduated to casting conventional multiplier reels and 12’ heavers for the 200 yard cast ,… no more fooling around ,… that was over 50 years ago…and I’m still casting 200 yards
Nice we have a beach just like this down here in Corpus Christi, lots of whiting, stingray, catfish, flounder, drum, and croaker. Unfortunately theres lines of people constantly walking down the beach and would rather grab my line and lift it over them than walk 4ft to the side and go around me
Light tackle with little bait catches little fish. Get a 10-12ft surf caster with live bait and get in the water and put your bait beyond those breakers and big red and black drum may bite.
Not sooo fast there. Little baits "do "catch BIG Fish ! Just look at the big fish Matt Isbell @Bama Beach Bum, catches. Big Black Drum, and Big Redfish on #2 circle hooks with only "Fish -Bites !" most people in my place just put down the rod on hang stick, put a bell on the rod & just wait till the fish bite the bait. never see people do this kind of style but this is awesome trick to get a first hook up ratio up and up..
fishing off the beach is really fun haha. although it can be tough on some days lol what i do with extremely softbaits such as clams is i usually tie them with bait cotton so that they don't fly off wen i cast and i usually cast my bait hard and far lol. also helps to prevent getting stolen too easily by pickers too
Question... I live at the beach, retired and wife and I want to start eating more fish...provided I can catch them...So, what do I keep and how big do they need to be?? I don't know jack about fishing but we want to start something we can do together along with eating?? Thanks for the great "how to" video by the way...Perfect
Hey man I am newly subscribed to your channel and I want to thank you for your thorough 101 and informative fishing videos. They are great. Keep up the great work
Cut the fans off of a stingray use it like scallops then cut the center of the head it looks like white hamburger meat grill that shit up with seasonings it’s so good!
Been surf fishing for the first time this week this was s helpful video so thank you. I’m here in the outer banks for vacation and have caught a sea mullet and a bunch of sting rays, been using shrimp.
hey great vid especially showing the knot tying; but use a uni knot, supper easy, lots stonger than improved clinch. Get rid of snap for weight, use line with loop so you can break off and save hooks and rig if you get snagged. im from portland or. uni and palomer knot only knot i use for surf, salmon and steelies.never loose fish due to knots failing. also wet the knot before tighting it, so your line wont burn; trust me. oh lookup gulp sand worms, best bait artifical bait forsurf here pnw.
Mabby you should subscribe to or at least watch "Bama Beach Bum" videos. Matt really knows "Surf Fishing and how to !" Really, I'm sure you'll find Matt gives ya way better advise on what to use and how to use it. Just check it out, nothing to loose. Much too gain ! Tom , Daytona Beach, FL.
This is trash. This guy is an armature who doesn't know anything. Look up surfing In Florida. You'll learn how to really surf fish and catch big fish and actually learn how to read the surf and know where to fish and proper rigs and bait to use
I would do a "loop to loop" connection for when you connect your hooks to the main rig, instead of a slipknot like you did, should be a much stronger connection
Hi Jeff , I’m paying attention.. Did you say an improved clinch knot ? When rotating the tag end 5 revolutions and come back through the loop at the eyelet , you come back with the tag end and pass it through the second loop then cinch it using a little saliva
Thanks you guys! I liked, subscribed, purchased the things you mentioned. I have always fished but only a few times oceanside. I feel prepared, just need to know fish size and limit regulations. Headed to Tybee Island and surrounding area. We shall see.
Enjoyed the video but that is a standard Clinch knot and it does do better if you get it wet before cinching. The Improved Clinch Knot requires one more step. After putting the tag end through the loop at the hook eye you put the tag end back through a loop you just created by doing that. Then you wet the knot cinch it by pulling on the Standing end.
Great video...ive surf fished a few times caught some nice drum and flounder but I have never used blood worms...do they bite and cause a allergic reaction? I think someone told me that once...i don't know if they were yanking my chain or not
Bloodworms can, will, and do bite and once you have been bitten you learn to keep your fingers away from their mouths. Some people cut their mouth off just to keep from getting bit. Never heard of an allergic reaction.
Thanks for the tips, I cast out every time I go the beach and catch nothing. Realized it's due to my weights thanks to you, best of luck to you and hope I catch a fish next time I go out! (Edit) I was using pinch weights.
Just what size reel are ya using ??? 1500 yards off shore ! Why not just get a boat ? You'll never set a hook, even if ya did it would take ya all day to bring something in.
Dude , that is an old school clonch lnot . The improved clincj lnot uou run the tag end back through the loop from putting the tag end theough the loop on tour finger .
Left with no food in Scotland I need to learn fast I live 50 yards from.sea Thank you this will help me learn I need to learn how to attach even lime I got beach rod in. Don't know ANYTHING yet
I got a $60ish rod and reel combo last year and used it with a whiting rig, same idea as the rig in this video but all fishing line no metal wire, when I was on Hatteras Island. Caught some sea mullet and spot with it using artificial blood-worms. I would think you'd need more for going after something like Drum but it was fun for me and they were good eating.
Thank you for this.I just moved to the beach and I'm new to saltwater angling.I will invest in your rig set up.That seems to make all the difference when casting.
I really appreciate the effort that went into the making of the video. However, this video is not a REAL beginner's video. - What to do when I catch a fish? - What are my easy options of storing a fish once I catch it? I'd say a video where you show a process of catching a fish and showing all the steps from start to finish when the fish safely in a container would be really helpful!
Thank you for your video. Our 11 yr old grandson is in love with fishing. We rented a house on the beach in Indialantic, FL, and want to give it a try. Could you list the try of rod I need to buy and the supplies? It looks like fun. I'll give it a try too!
A man of your knowledge I trust. I am about to go on my first saltwater fishing trip in September. Wanting to catch a shark is what I’m hoping and afraid to have to small of gear to handle a bigger one if it bites on. What rod/reel/line/ and bait would you suggest?
I thread the blood worm on then a tiny piece of fish bites over barb to keep the worm on and add color , works for me bloodworms are about. $ 12.00 a dozen

Lost a huge striper this weekend and I wonder what weight my line should be to catch a 15-20 lb saltwater fish?

Jeff Excellent beginner's tutorial. One edit I would make is the part where you tie the knot. OBX Koastie oh shit. Thank you, even for fisherman’s knot I have noticed mono has a lot of friction. Spit is my friend
I’ve have done that knot without living it, and several times I would pull it. It would break
I really learned a lot. I grew up fishing in Michigan and would hammer the fish all day up there. Recently moved to the South and have been not doing so well. Vacationing at the beach next week and I am excited to try shore fishing!

Only thing I've ever caught on these rigs are rays, croakers, and snapper. Doubled up many many times. Basic rig that'll catch fish all day long
Thanks for the info. Gonna have to give this a try this summer in Myrtle

As somebody who ties an improved clinch for basically everything, you missed the last step and turned it into a regular knot.
That last step is exactly why they call it an IMPROVED clinch knot

We shall see.
good video, i enjoyed watching
Enjoyed the video but that is a standard Clinch knot and it does do better if you get it wet before cinching. The Improved Clinch Knot requires one more step. After putting the tag end through the loop at the hook eye you put the tag end back through a loop you just created by doing that. Then you wet the knot cinch it by pulling on the Standing end.
Thanks for your video! Going to nas mayport Monday!
@@obxkoastie8170 thanks😁
Skates or not trash fish to me they are fun to catch and did you ever eat one day taste awesome
What lb test is your main line?
14lb..20 lb fluorocarbon leader..that's the correct
AMEN, BUXTON!!!! Great video, brought back tons of memories. Best bait then was squid skinned and cut into minnow like strips.
I was wondering what is a good surf fishing combo. I’m looking for a new rod and reel.
There's a fine line between fishing and just standing on the shore.
Many Thank for the Easy Tutorials
Thanks for the tips, I cast out every time I go the beach and catch nothing. Realized it's due to my weights thanks to you, best of luck to you and hope I catch a fish next time I go out! (Edit) I was using pinch weights.
I'm heading to that exact spot but I'm Drone casting out about 1000-1500 yards right at the dropoff
Just what size reel are ya using ??? 1500 yards off shore ! Why not just get a boat ? You'll never set a hook, even if ya did it would take ya all day to bring something in.
That friggin hat is EPICally cool! Thx for the vid!
When is surf fishing 102 coming out? Lol. I want to see some more techniques and different setups.

Aaa I just saw your message was 2 weeks old. Hope you haven't died of starwation yet
Deep fried mars bar as bait....
Can you do a vid on cheap surf fishing combos? Im thinking about starting beach fishing...wondering if cheap combos are any good.
Buy a Penn Battle II 5000 on an 8 or 9 foot rod for about $120 and call it a day.
Most beginners are just doing catch and release for the time being
When is the best time to surf fish low tide or high tide?
Is there any preferred time for surf fishing?
Alot of people claim the last 2 hours of the rising tide in the Carolinas, especially with rising or setting sun.
Great tutorial
Thank you for your video. Our 11 yr old grandson is in love with fishing. We rented a house on the beach in Indialantic, FL, and want to give it a try. Could you list the try of rod I need to buy and the supplies? It looks like fun. I'll give it a try too!
Nice vid 👍🏻
A man of your knowledge I trust. I am about to go on my first saltwater fishing trip in September. Wanting to catch a shark is what I’m hoping and afraid to have to small of gear to handle a bigger one if it bites on. What rod/reel/line/ and bait would you suggest?
thanks for the video man learnt alot
Made it look so easy
What kind of knot are you using for your leader? What size reel? What line test are you using?
Just bought a 6000 reel can’t wait to start
so much fun, cool video!
I thread the blood worm on then a tiny piece of fish bites over barb to keep the worm on and add color , works for me bloodworms are about. $ 12.00 a dozen
When you were upsizing your bait were you upsizing your hooks?
