    I appreciate your craftsmanship. I've welded a great deal of aluminum. Brazing seems so much easier in so many applications. Wow thanks for the lesson.

    My goodness, that was wonderful. I have a motorcycle petrol cap made of ´´pot metal´´. I paid 40 pounds ( English) to get it rechromed and it was rusty within 2 months. They did not fill the tiny, tiny, holes that obviously existed after 30 years exposure. This is what I need to do. Ta very much. Tony.

    @Myminizzle For boot lid repairs on old Bentleys, I always cut the ruined area out, in circular or semi-circular patterns (never with square corners). I fit a patch of the same thickness material and of 3003 alloy butting it carefully around the perimeter. I then weld it in, using the torch, flux, and 1100 filler rod.

    @rooster4501 Yes I would. I would use our flux-core brazing rod. I would vee the crack a tiny bit on each side, clean it thoroughly with isopropyl alcohol, and brush it with a stainless steel toothbrush so it is clean, clean, clean. - tinman

  • @tinmantech
    @tinmantech  13 лет назад +1

    @jf99151 British Small Arms made motorcycle fuel tanks that were formed of BirmaBrite, equivalent to our 5052, which my company clearly declares as simply not joinable with this rod. I must apologize for any confusion. There is an excellent alternative, however, and that is our Rod & Flux Combination. I recommend using our TM2000 welding lenses though (to absorb the sodium orange flare given off by the flux). - tinman

  • @tinmantech
    @tinmantech  12 лет назад +1

    @jf99151 The BSA motorcycle tanks are quite often made of BIRMA-BRITE, a british alloy equal to our 5052. This marine-grade alloy is very corrosion resistant and therefore you need a corrosive brazing flux with the correct filler rod. Our flux-core materials simple will not work. Be sure to use the corrosive flux and rod combination (not the flux-core rod product). - tinman

  • @tinmantech
    @tinmantech  12 лет назад +1

    @nickf1229 Usually these tanks are made out of 5052, a marine-grade alloy. Brazing these pits can be done using a rod and a flux combination (NOT flux-core). Soldering is impossible. Otherwise, it's best to cut out the bottom and put in a fresh one. - tinman

  • @tinmantech
    @tinmantech  14 лет назад +1

    @AutoPilotDeLorean For steel rust pits you have to dig all corrosion and dirt out of the bottom of each pit, making the steel bright. Then you can use roll solder and its activated flux from the hardware store. Flux the fender and the solder wire, warm the fender until the flux sizzles and then touch the solder to the spots. the solder will flow in and fill beautifully. For chrome, use the orange flux-coated silver braze we have on our website. - tinman

  • @tinmantech
    @tinmantech  12 лет назад +1

    @gbftats07 It can be, depending on the design of the joint. A brazed lap joint can be as strong as a butt-welded joint. - tinman

  • @tinmantech
    @tinmantech  12 лет назад

    @blkbernard I look at the strength required, and then the joint designs possible. Lastly, I look at what temperature the part will withstand. I generally solder soft, thin parts. I will braze parts that enable a T-joint or lap-joint. And I weld when given a strong part that allows a butt joint. - tinman

    Do you have the same kind of results with a propane torch ? It seems that your oxygen acetylene torch heats up the brazing better without melting the part as long as you heat up carefully ... I can't get to the same result with my propane torch even though I have some fine brazing rods ...
