  • Two dioramas in our JCH Museum. The Alamo as it was in 1836 and The Alamo as it is today. The 1836 version is approx 8 foot by 8 foot in size. The newer version of the Alamo is approx 4 foot by 3 foot in size. Something like these two projects would be awesome school history projects and are easy to build. I posted about 11 or 12 videos explaining how to build the Alamo from foam and tile mortar. Please like and share my videos. Thanks in advance.

Pretty damn cool. I had not realized that the chapel entrance was inside walls. My name is David Crockett, and I am a collateral descendant of Davy Crockett, directly descended from one of his brother's, Nathan Crockett. I am a armchair but somewhat serious student of history. Thanks for the vid

Great presentation! Years ago I read a column mentioning a pair of old, large wooden gates found at a ranch near the Medina River. Historians believe gates this size and age would have come from Alamo compound. Have you or anyone else heard of this find and what ever became of them? Once noticed, I don't think the valuable artifact would be forgotten.

  • @billyellis1597

Both are awesome..the 1836 version is one of the best I've ever seen..it would be great if the compound in it's entirety could be built back..that way people wouldn't only have to picture it in thier minds but actually see it..

People used to be able to experience how it looked in 1836 by visiting the set built for John Wayne's 1960 movie. It's been closed and deteriorating since 2010. I wish I'd been able to visit it before then. There are some good video tours of it here on RUclips. It's called Alamo Village.

The model was incredible. Although I am not a native Texan I did live in Texas for a year and a half. My son lived there for several years. Even though he had warned me before our visit about what had been done with the Alamo grounds I was still stunned and horrified that the site had basically been destroyed for commercial reasons. It was if Gettysburg or Normandy had been overrun by streets and buildings. Evidently today's Texans are more respectful of the site than the previous generations who literally destroyed it. Shame on them.

There survives some wonderful writings/ memories by Mexican officers who took part in the battle. I would think it might be a cool school project to look at and present the history from the Mexican point of view. If not politically, militarily, tacticaly.

I have now moved them both home and have reworked the large scale model by adding more detail, more men, and making corrections on things that I've realized since building it. I have also reduced the size of the large model. Only approximately a third of it exists now. I may be building other sections of it later but a lot of it was wrong or way out of scale so an overhaul was due. Yes the models are here in Texas but no longer displayed. Since the remodel both dioramas were featured at this years Alamo Symposium in San Antonio.

Were there horse stables with an overhang close to the church possibly with arches? This is why I am asking.
This is gonna sound weird but when I was little about 8 years old I had a very vivid dream that I was shot and killed at the Alamo. I am 41 now but remember the dream to this day. First I saw a guy that was sick and bed ridden but believe he was in the church at the time in a small room on the ground level that was doubling as an infirmary for him he was an important man because he was given special care. This would have been the night before the final battle. Then the next morning I am looking from a vantage point and saw a man sniping off Mexicans left and right much more than the other men (I think he may have been Davy Crockett). The Mexicans had make shift ladders and were putting them up against the wall to get over, while many were getting shot their numbers became too many and they got inside and they opened one of the main gates (I believe it was the southern gate). Once they got the gate open it was all over and they started pouring in. I ordered everyone around me to the church as a last refuge of defense. I moved to the ground level met up with my wife and she was in front of me running as well and wearing a beautiful blue dress. I was close to the church and under some sort of overhang with make shift horse stables and trying to make it I believe to a side door of the church or a side walkway that comes out near the front of the church. As I was running I was shot in the back by a musket ball and collapsed to the ground dying, I saw my wife continuing to run and she did not know I was shot at the time. One of my men next to me bent down to help me but was immediately shot in the head. My last thought before perishing was that I would see my wife again in the future and then I died and woke up.
