    I started loving Björk when I was around 6 yrs old and I became fascinated by the sound of her speaking and the strong Icelandic influence in her art. I've spent at least a decade learning about Iceland and I never seem to have enough, such a magnificent place I'm dying to meet. I love your videos and like most viewers, when you speak your language so muuuuch, please teach us!!!

    It’s honestly so interesting that u are from Iceland because I have never seen some Icelandic foreigners doing RUclips videos also I think nobody knows how much iceland is offering you when u think about iceland u just think about volcanoes and that’s it you don’t think about northern lights the beautiful nature or the culture. I really love your videos. You just definitely do a Iceland series hahahahaha. Also how is the job situation in Iceland ? Since it’s such a small country I’m really interested. Are there enough job ? Can u work whatever u want? Or do a lot of Icelandic people move away bc of the job situation? Also what are u studying at university? Greetings from Germany 🇩🇪 💕

    • @Hrafna
      @Hrafna  6 лет назад +32

      Yess so true! Iceland is a lot more than just our volcanoes! The job situation is great here in Iceland! The unemployment rate is only at 2,8% (2017) yes there is enough job but if you want to specialize in something you most likely have to have a degree (bachelor or masters in some cases). Kids usually stark working really early at 15/16 years old often in restaurants and stores! There were a lot of people who moved away because of the economic crisis in 2008 but the economy is pretty stable for no . I am studying literature and creative writing at the university! :)

      When I visited Iceland I used the word tak the most (I’m not sure if that’s spelled right but that’s how you say it) it means thank you and is appreciated. Also, if you can get a book that has the letters in Icelandic and the sounds they make in English Icelandic words are phonetic and all pronounced the same so you can pronounce anything by reading the letters. The big words are also all mostly made up of little words and the little words give you descriptions of the characteristics or locations of the place which is cool and helpful to make sense of the jumble of letters that can be intimidating to native English speakers.

      Because there are so few people who can understand Icelandic for you to talk to. Many if you are in and about Reykjavik there are plenty of people who speak this language, but as you get further away from this city, the fewer are the people who can speak this language, when you get out into the Tundra there may not be another person who will listen to you for miles away and when you get into the Ocean you are lucky if you can find a fishing boat where there are a few guys you can talk to. Further, and you can just forget about it. There are like what 300,000 who in the speak this language. On my Island, I am in 1 crowd that has 250,000 English speakers in it when we watch the fire works on the fourth of July at Jones Beach.

      So what? :D Wanting to learn a language isn't always about viability. :) I'm Finnish and not that many people speak our language either. In our country we have 3 languages; Finnish, Swedish and Sámi. I couldn't care less about learning proper Swedish for example and it would be so useful to me. I speak German, English and Italian instead. Purely because I wanted to learn them. It's the same with Icelandic, I've always loved Iceland and the language fascinates me. :)

Also my boyfriend name is "Riccardo" wich is pronounced "Rikkárdo"(?) With the k sound instead of the english "ch" sound. Iceland is known for some of the strongest winds in the world. In fact, I think the records for sustained wind were recorded at Keflavik airport. United States Air Force used to have a rescue unit based at the Keflavik airport and one of the main things they used to tell new members was to never let go of the car door or it may be ripped off by the wind. It has happened.
    That said, the average temperatures in Iceland are very tempered and never get very extreme. The winters aren't extremely cold and the summers aren't extremely hot. This is due to Iceland being a small island in the ocean, near the flow of the Gulf Stream. Yes, there are ice sheets on the northern half of the island, but the average snow fall for the year isn't that high. In fact, most winter days, the temperature stays just above freezing.
    In Iceland, you can not only drink tap water, but most of the water streams in the wild are clean enough to drink. Just make sure they don't have a high amount of minerals like sulfur. There are a lot of hot springs (and volcanos) in Iceland.

      The two languages are somewhat close together. Norwegian being the closest to Icelandic of any other language in the world. However, Norwegian is still closer to Danish or Swedish than it is to Icelandic. Icelandic is so very special because it is so old and isolated. However, I believe most Icelanders study English and Danish in school. English because it's just the universal language now and Danish because they were a part of the Danish Kingdom until 1944.

    I don't know if you already answered this, but I read that Iceland uses geo-thermal energy, i.e. Heat from inside the earth.
    It seems to me that if larger countries did this they could boil sea water to turn it into steam, which could driive turbines that make electricity.
    However if they did, I think the oil companies would figure out a way to make this not happen

      Iceland the heat is very close to the surface so is cheap to develop. Other ares deep drilling is required. Also, mineralization of the pipes etc. is a big hang up.
