Americans have on a few occasions asked me what we do during winter. That is, the question was kinda like; ,,During winter, do you guys do... anything?'' Apparently they thought that we just completely snow in and then just stay inside our houses for 4-5 months and wait it out. They imagined there being no school, no work, no social gatherings, just several weeks of snowed in solitude.

I know about the assumption that someone living that far north must obviously live in igloos... I live at 68.3° north latitude in northern Canada, yes above the arctic circle. Last winter we had temps colder than -30°C from mid December through mid March... One thing that I found cool living here the first summer with 24 hours of daylight for 2 months was that I could take photos of rainbows at 2-3 AM. Living this far north is a challenge for sure. I wasn't born up here, I moved here for work, so you have the advantage of being born in Iceland, it's more natural for you to deal with the extremes of the seasons. You do an amazing job informing the world about your country, you're a natural communicator.
Never have I ever put Iceland and igloos in the same sentence before in my life! I had a little laugh at that one. Was surprised about the Danish however, I never would have thought it to be boring, but I have never studied it. Anyway, really enjoying the question and answer videos, all the very best for you and looking forward to your next video 😄

One can ask an Italian who lives in Rome whether he is a Roman? Technically the answer is yes, one of the definitions of Roman is somebody who lives in Rome. So did the Vikings ever do anything the Romans didn't do? (Besides discover America) the answer is no. Everything the vikings did, the Romans did as well. The Vikings raided villages and so did the Romans. The Vikings took slaves, and so did the Romans. What was different between the Vikings and the Romans? The Vikings had better ships and the Romans were better organized.

We got some artificial norse-nostalgia on the rise over here in the Scandinavian countries as well these days. I've been seeing a lot of the classic new age hippie-trappings with generic wellness/eco-conscious living/yoga-retreat stuff, but repackaged in a viking-ish aesthetic.
@pjesapjes except we don't really know how it sounded. We can just assume and reconstruct. But we will never for sure know how they really pronounced it.
@pjesapjes Yeah, you understand the written part, but you can't claim that you would understand it when spoken, because we don't really know for sure what it even sounded like.
@@x3kiwiix3 You can't always be 100% sure how dead languages sounded, but we do have a very good idea of how Old Norse sounded. Icelandic has undergone quite a few changes from Old Norse in its sound system.
@pjesapjes Yes, Icelandic is very much like Old Norse, but it sounds fairly different from how Old Norse sounded. For instance, Old Norse "au" sounded like the German "au", rather than the diphthong found in modern Icelandic, and Old Norse "ll" sounded like [l:] rather than modern Icelandic [dl]. 😊

As a Canadian, I’ve been genuinely asked if I live in an igloo like 5 or 6 years ago... by an American of course 😂😂
I’ve had an girl from UK ask me if I kept my gun under my pillow. Had a Croatian man ( we were both in the military, he was training at the same school as me) ask if I had ever tried cooked vegetables. I admit here in good ole’ USA we eat a lot more raw vegetables than cooked, but seriously dude.
Michael Boland
Well, you do have snow on the ground for ten months out of the year, and Spring, Summer and Fall are all crammed in together into July and August. ... From an American, of course.
Lol Canada is a terrible place.

I love the weather in Iceland. I do NOT like being hot, so it is a perfect place to be. Plus, with the geothermal heat, if you get hot in your home, just open a window. :) There is something wonderful about each season... the cozy dark months w/ Northern Lights, the fall with the turning leaves and rainy weather, and the spring/summer when everything wakes up and goes crazy. Iceland is a beautiful, wonderful place and I 100% agree with you... bring a rain coat, LOL
Thank you for the video. Igloo's are usually from the other ocean Inuit's usually make them. In Alaska or that area.
23 years old and so great at deflecting all those "stupid" questions and/or questions that "get on your nerves real quick". Love your videos. Please keep making them. I just enjoy learning and listening to things from "back home", by which I mean Europe. I haven't been there in forever, and stupid COVID makes it even harder to go back even for vacation. Some time in the future I would love to bring my kids on a tour around Europe and have all the Nordic countries being part of it in one way or another. Let's hope the freaking COVID situation will resolve itself sooner than later.

That supposed ‘app’ is not something any ethnic Icelander in this nation uses, nor have we heard of. I’ve never ever heard of it. This is just a myth.
It isn’t rocket science to figure out that Icelandic is an ethnic identity, and just like every other ethnic identity in the world or homogenizing populace, you date within your bloodline. Non-Icelanders seem to only just be figuring this out so are fascinated by the fact ones significant other is their distant descendant, so distant that they aren’t considered immediate family. Question 8 I can relate to, as I grew up In Alaska, I been asked that question by many lower 48ers and individuals I met while serving in the US Army.
I got tired of it and started playing into it by answering that we had a modern Igloo that had a 2 sled garage. I would ride the dog sled to school and occasionally I would have to fight off Polar Bears.
The funniest part of this was that there were individuals who actually believed it...then I would start laughing and tell them it was a joke

Hrafna are you aware that your camera goes out of focus quite a lot. Just thought that I would bring that to your attention. Thanks again for your video. ❤️ Big hug from Melbourne Australia 🇦🇺
Hrafna gets very animated, which can make it difficult for a stationary camera to focus, when she's talking about something that she's passionate about.
"I am just me". Humble before everything. Best wishes Hrafna! Can't wait to finally settle in that magical country.

The igloo one broke me LOL
When countries have beauty pageants they usually send of the contestants to some sunny beach for some nice pictures. Not what Norway did though, they sent the miss Norway contestants to iceland....to build igloos

I drove around the whole country. Took me two weeks and stayed some 4 days in Reykjavik. Love this country and would move in a split second. Beautiful country.
at what temperature do you guys say "wow, its a sunny day!"??
When the freezer light gets lit.
I think that the average summer temperature in Iceland is generally around 15 degrees Celsius (59 Fahrenheit) but it can get warmer, say around 20 degrees Celsius (68 Fahrenheit)
Hmmm about 20 degrees :0
if a day is sunny or not doesn‘t depend on temperature... it depends on if there is sun or not.
I have had it at -26 and sunny so -26 was a sunny day. It does not depend on temp.

People seem to jump the “Viking” train all because of the tv show. Viking were not people per say or a culture. It was more a way of life essential sea to land pirates. It was a profession more so than a group of people. And funny they assume anyone from Iceland is a follower of the old gods or asatru. Still I’m sure it’s old to hear the same questions.
there are people in Iceland that practice Ásatrú and actually, my son is one of them in December of 2019 there were 4.723 people in the Ásatrúarfélagið witch is not a big percent of the Icelandic nation but and here is a link to there website asatru.is/
per say 😂
To anyone who is looking to visit someday, definitely make the time for it. A friend and I went in 2013 and stayed for a month, we rented a car and drove leisurely around the country, stopping anywhere that struck our fancy because we were in no rush. And it was worth it. So many good memories! It was expensive, but we counter balanced by not going to restaurants so much and eating a lot of sandwiches in the car.
Ps: love your videos Hrafna!

The Viking ferocity is so legendary it will haunt and terrorize the rest of humanity forever...
