Im from iceland and my grandpa (my mothers father) is one of 16 children and my father is one of 16 children as well. I really need to be careful when it comes to my dating life.
I have two great grandmothers who were sisters named Hendrixdochter. They were Dutch. Using Patronymics is a very old custom among the Nordic and Germanic peoples. The names used to change with each generation. One great grandfather was Cornelis Aertsen. His son was Peter Cornelisen. His daughter was Belitje Cornelisdochter. It got very confusing for the English because there could be many people with the same names so some added the place they were from like van der Bilt (from or of the Bilt)
Usually afterwards in awkward ways. But it's not as common as you'd think. Nowadays we totally check beforehand. And we usually consider anything further related than 4-5 generations to be fine. After all we're literally all related. 7 generations is quite common (that goes back to the 1700s).
Very true. My husband and I are 6th generation related. That's distant enough, no birth defects if we have kids and no chance of us being at the same family reunion as kids!
From my experience dating some Icelandic girls in Denmark: - They only take the initiavite in Iceland. When they're abroad, men are expected to do the first move, as usual. In the best case, what can happen is that if they feel like they want to sleep with somebody that night and you are considered acceptable for the task and available, they may tell you directly that after the date they want to go to your place etc, but this doesn't imply they're interested in you. You must be aware of this behaviour (which is in general true for Scandinavian) and accept it or it will lead to unpleasant situations. - They may be quite picky , even in Iceland... Don't believe that you go to Iceland and girls will go after you just for being an outsider. Good thing: they are really friendly for being Scandinavians, they talk to people and don't get spooked if you talk to them before alcohol kicks in.

That taking the last name was a thing in all of Scandinavia as well as the Netherlands. As far as the Netherlands goes, Napoleon came in, demanded last names for administrative purposes, and everyone laughed and many gave ridiculous names because they all were confident Napoleon would be kicked out, just like everyone else has been kicked out over the centuries. Anyway, even when a namechange is approved, the change as a rule needs to be so minor that the old one is easily deduced, so across from us for years there lived a woman named Piël, and I had a clasmate named Poëpjes. Not even kidding, it made me curious and look up why this was the case because it was obviously Piel and Poepjes before. @DarthVader The racism is very selective here. If you are from a western country and have western values you're fine. If you are against western values and spit on them, you find racism. The refugees who come here with their middle fingers up are the reason for that poll result. We don't want to end up like some other European countries.
@DarthVader If you are from USA then you should be fine. Although I saw a situation in my home town where a guy was shouting "go back where you came from, we don't want you here", and then the black guy responded "USA you mean?" I was positively surprised that the shouter actually apologized for thinking him as refugee solely because of skin color. Ironically the racism here is mostly not based on race. It's discrimination based on country of origin. The comments here are mostly against Middle Easterns if you've noticed, so is the racism. Police in Germany just arrested a guy with Middle Eastern name that raped under aged girls here. He escaped from Finland to Germany but it didn't help. Result is that refugees in a city of Oulu (place of committed crimes) are now afraid to go out. News like this increase racism here. Statistically both Iraqis and Afgans commit sex crimes about 41 times more than native Finns here according to recent police statistics and are dominating the statistics clearly. That is the main cause of racism. That's 2,7% of the men arriving from those countries so not everyone from there is a rapist but the sudden increase is a problem that has alarmed the police and politicians, and rightfully so.
From all the videos I've seen about Iceland and her culture, I sure would love an opportunity to live and work there for at least a year to experience life there. I think it'll be very enjoyable and mind-blowing, especially with all that beautiful-beyond-words landscape.
I especially want to see the non common places like Greenland, Faroe Islands, Åland Islands, and Svalbard. Only after the main Nordic places are finished first.
This was brilliant!! I’ve never met anyone from Iceland but after watching this I need to! If you ever decide to make a dating a New Zealander video let me know 😊
It's certainly possible, but not more than in any other sexually open country. I think you'd see similar rates of STIs and STDs in any Western country.
Great video Marina! Beautiful view of Iceland 🇮🇸. The Icelandic girl is very pretty. I hope to visit there one day since my parents got to visit Iceland.
I love Iceland, i love the language and i love everything about it, the landscapes, the mythology, the people, everything! As a half Native American half Greek girl, Iceland seems so beautifully mysterious, and so different from what i've experienced. I'm definitely going there.
If you go to visit, it would be fine, but honestly if you go to live there, it probably would not be the best just being honest. With your ethnic background, the climate would be unnecessarily harsh. That is why you do not see very many brown people in Eastern Europe, and you didn't see them for a long time in Scandinavia, Germany, and Austria. The climate is way too harsh if you are not adapted to it.
It's not calling people by their first name, it's calling them by their name. The great majority of Icelanders don't have last names - they have patronyms. Using their 'last name' would be like saying "Hey Jake's daughter!".
Very nice video, and excellent shots of the scenic beauty! I definitely dig the casual attitude and women feeling free to speak their minds. Feedback is always good, and especially when it doesn't come camouflaged in mind- and word-games. :P One of my European friends told me about an internet scam that claimed that there weren't enough men to go around in Iceland, and claimed the government was willing to pay people to move there. Just like how a Nigerian prince wanted to leave his fortune to somebody by lottery. X'D
That actually seems like a top date, an attractive, friendly, chilled out girl who likes getting outdoors and enjoys a social drink. Keep doing what your doing Iceland, you got this.
Nooooo......stop defiling your precious blood-line! Look at the jews! They too don't procreate with non-jews!! And why? -- to keep their precious blood clean!! Stop mingling with outsiders, apart from your distant relatives in Scandinavia, of course - as long as they are healthy, white and sound minded.
Honestly I have always dream of having a future with an Iceland woman, but watching this videos makes me want to be with them more honestly, Feeling Blessed ❤️
Anybody I know who has been to Iceland said it was the most weird place they have ever visited and that the average person there is not only REALLY COLD but highly strange. Can't wait to experience it myself someday.

I absolutely love this video. I am a staunch feminist and I would love to date an Icelandic man someday. Amazing video. Feels like home. I love Iceland. I love the feminism. Cheers!
Cousin relationships aren't incest, even when they're first cousins. Incest entails first degree relatives, offspring, parents and siblings. But I understand if they want to avoid first cousins all the time even though it's still safe. It just becomes a real problem if it's done generation after generation.
@@infidelheretic923 It's not incest, it is, however, inbreeding. All incestuous relationships are inbreeding, but not all inbred relationships are incestuous. Incest and inbreeding per se have no negative connotations attached to them; they merely describe a type of relationship between living things that are blood related to a degree. There's nothing wrong with having offspring with your first cousin. The risk is too low especially if both are very healthy.
@@Shijaru64 I’ll grant that you’re probably technically correct as to the slight definitional difference between incest and inbreeding. But inbreeding is bad too. Even if the risk is low for serious defects after the first generation it happens you increase the risk that it will happen again. The more it happens the worse it gets. The offspring don’t get a say in the matter. It’s unfair to them to subject them to needless avoidable genetic defects because of their parents mating with too close a relative.
@@infidelheretic923 Hence my first, comment, inbreeding is only a problem if done repeatedly, but we have had millions of people marry first cousins whose children have no issues at all; a somewhat common practice in some Muslim countries and Latin American countries. In any case, given Iceland's small population, avoiding all forms of inbreeding is understandable although not entirely necessary. Heck, even true incest is likely to result in a healthy offspring if none of your ancestors did anything similar. It's not worth the risk, of course, but I'm merely mentioning it because it's unfortunately a taboo topic for many people so your average Joe wrongly believes if you're family it automatically means the kid will be born with 2 heads, 4 feet or mentally retarded. Even the risks of genetic defects between first cousins and unrelated people are actually very similar. Unless you're unlucky or your medical history is plagued with shit, you're almost guaranteed to have a healthy kid with your first cousin. While I'm fully aware my opinion on the topic is unpopular, I personally have no issues with first degree relatives marrying or engaging in coitus as long as they're both consenting adults and avoid having kids. Unfortunately, in practice, most incestuous relationships seem to stem from rape or other forms of coercion. Incest is super common when an adult takes advantage of a child. Having said that, I can understand why incest has yet to be seriously discussed in modern times from a legal point of view.
@@Shijaru64 The fact that you can only get away with it some of the time once every four or five generations is it self reason enough for it to be made illegal. Cousin marriage is a major problem in the Muslim world and it should be made illegal there too if only they would ignore the Quran and turn to common sense. Aside from the genetic risks to offspring there is another reason why incest and even inbreeding is bad. It corrodes familial bonds. Relationships can be messy and lovers often separate on bad terms. If that ex lover also happens to be a close family member that is yet another degree of alienation. This may not be reason enough for it to be illegal. But it’s reason enough to avoid it as much as possible in ones own life. My point isn’t to disparage people who happen to have been born of inbreeding. They had no say in the matter. And they have every right to live their lives and have children of their own. But they shouldn’t have the right to make the same mistake themselves and pass on more defective genes to the next generation than they would by marrying literally anyone else.

Wtf, I've just watched an older video of Hrafna where she said that it's just a rumor and there is no app for Icelandic people to look it up if they're related to the person they're dating with. She also said that she doesn't even know where this thing came from
hey, there actually is an app but no one uses it.
Weird
No it’s a website
Third cousins? Smash.
Second cousin is my safe base.
I thought that too, and i'm not even icelandic
So second cousins are when your parents are cousins but third is when your grandparents are cousins?
@@dingdong475 Yep. Then your second cousin is your parents' cousin's kid. You and your second cousin share the same great-grandma, though. (It's 2am and I might have miscalculated here)
@@NoctLightCloud so your parents parents parents siblings child's childs children is your third cousin but your parent's parent's siblings childrens children is your second cousin. Ok all clear now.
I AM OBSESSED WITH THIS SERIES. Oh! Norway and Sweden next! ♡♡♡
I agree that they should Norway and Sweden next. They should cover the Baltic states as well.
And Estonia please
Don't forget Finland.

Lmao same
It's not calling people by their first name, it's calling them by their name. The great majority of Icelanders don't have last names - they have patronyms. Using their 'last name' would be like saying "Hey Jake's daughter!".
I see.

This knowledge would have been beneficial about 10 years ago.
Why
A girl making the first move and not acting like she did a favor?
What planet is this ?
This is sooooo great! 😂
omg the cousin app thing is hilarious😂
Cousin relationships aren't incest, even when they're first cousins. Incest entails first degree relatives, offspring, parents and siblings. But I understand if they want to avoid first cousins all the time even though it's still safe. It just becomes a real problem if it's done generation after generation.
It IS incest. Cousins share at least one grand parent. You must be seven generations or more apart for it to not be incestuous.
@@Shijaru64
I’ll grant that you’re probably technically correct as to the slight definitional difference between incest and inbreeding.
@@Shijaru64
The fact that you can only get away with it some of the time once every four or five generations is it self reason enough for it to be made illegal.
But they shouldn’t have the right to make the same mistake themselves and pass on more defective genes to the next generation than they would by marrying literally anyone else.
love it, learning something new and adding humor to it. bravo guys.
Upgrade in production quality. Nice. 😊
Thanks Conor 🙌
