What I’ve discovered is that many actors, athletes, musicians, and others at the top of their career aren’t that different from you and me. They have the same insecurities and flaws that we all deal with every day. In a dark, yet enlightening way...I find a lot of comfort in that. I invite you all to join me while I get inside each of these fascinating people.

J.K. Simmons was a terrifying menace in Whiplash, such an incredible actor!
Yeah JK Simmons was very intimidating in Whiplash with his terrifying attitude towards Miles Teller, but when things settled down later in the movie they start to improve they’re behavior and then he becomes impressed with Miles Teller drumming skills and it was a happy ending.
@@kushbalaji1019 I wouldn't say it's a happy ending. The look on his father's face was that of horror, as he saw how obsessed his son was. The ending, to me, was that of an abuse victim in a cycle with their abuser.
@@bazingo5610then you completely misunderstood the whole movie. The father was the only one who believed in neeman and was very proud that he had come that far. Neeman had also finally overcome the conductor and that was the point of that final show. He had become a charlie parker
@bazingo5610 absolutely. The only way I see it. He would sacrifice the man on the altar of perfection. Nothing else matters to him.
@@kushbalaji1019it’s definitely not a happy ending - Fletcher has gotten exactly what he wants, Neeman is still desperate to appease him and get his approval as we see when he begins to work with Fletcher on stage and smiles. His father looks in horror because he realises Neeman has totally lost sight of things, he’s letting the abuser that drove his classmate (and likely other former students) to suicide carry on owning him and defining what he thinks is a good job or a successful life
"Small indie film" literally wins every award
And so it should. The intensity was on point and TOTALLY convincing.
It was at the time lol
That’s what it was gonna be at first lmao
It was a small indie film but then they got a huge budget behind it
It started out as a short film, like 20 mins or so
The fact that he said “Juno” was one of the best scripts ever made, makes me love and respect this actor, even more!

“Not quite my tempo-“ The man said calmly
It's funny because the first time he says it he is eerily calm.
He would had make a bad ass Gandalf

I've seen whiplash. It pisses me off. I don't know why but it legit gives me anxiety and makes me anxious about school.
Because it’s abuse and he plays a huge bully. And, he’s gotten away with his behavior for waaayyy too long….partially because of his brilliance.
JK Simmons NAILS the role. But, it is a tough watch and thankfully that behavior is less common now than when I was young.
He went from a menacing conductor to a badass Santa Claus
More than you know
He's also jacked so he's Omni Man mixed with Santa. He also still needs pictures of spiderman
@kreipoyke "if I don't see Spider man's gape you're all fired"
Hey the only menace here is Spiderman.
@Mattashicomposer you beat me by 3 hours
I jus wanna hug this man. Just so much character to him in general. Something nostalgic and comforting in hearing what he has to say.
Simmons seems like the kind of guy who'd let you do that if you asked nicely.
Yeah, he could talk about the most boring subject imaginable like the history of tires and I would be interested the entire time because his voice is so calming and experienced beyond his years

I’m not a drummer, but I love this movie, and I love that J.K. Simmons has some musical background
I’d say a tad more than some background, he has a Bachelor’s of Arts in Music specifically.

the fact that this team was intending to sign on for 173 bucks really just drives home how passionate they were about the script
That's not true lol. They made a short film that's separate from the movie. One scene
@halo2bounceguy for an 18 minute short thats still not much
@@halo2bounceguy
That's 173 bucks for a whole weekend of work (as it was planned).
I know sales guys who make double to triple that - on a singular day.
And this being related to high level acting? The actors were allowing themselves to get low-balled here
@@halo2bounceguy They made the short as a film festival pitch to get funding for a full feature length film. Miles Teller was also originally supposed to play Andrew in the short because he was also involved from the start, but he had scheduling conflicts.
This is the type of shorts that I want to see with a main video link. Looks like an incredibly interesting interview
As a drummer, I had to see this one at the theater, and I felt pretty much every emotion a human could feel while watching. Such an awesome friggin movie.
How authentic was the drumming in the movie and other musical aspects? Just asking cuz I've never been part of a band
Me too dude and I was also a drummer his age named Andrew living in New York. It was surreal
it was excellent all across the board i think.@@MrRmmk1
@@MrRmmk1it was pretty much completely detached from the reality of drumming/jazz culture as a whole (not to say it isn’t a fantastic film, which it totally is! the way i see it, it’s a sports film with the aesthetic of music)
first, the practicing scenes - if you’re really trying to become fluent as a drummer, priority number one is relaxed technique and playing slow while speeding up bit by bit at a rate that doesn’t cause you to tense up. if your hands are regularly bleeding, you’re gonna get tendinitis/carpel tunnel and lose your ability to play - again, relaxed technique is the key!
with the whole tempo thing, playing super fast swing is difficult yes, just not the defining feature of what makes someone a “good” drummer - there’s vocabulary, the ability to hear and interact, groove, decision making, awareness of form, knowing your standards (basically like, songs that’re widely known to jazz musicians), tons of things! no one’s gonna test your drumming ability by saying “here, play super fast swing!”
and then there’s the depiction of jazz culture - i’m not gonna say hardasses don’t exist, in general tho it’s more “let’s hang out and make some music” and less “i’m gonna throw a chair at you if you aren’t matching my tempo” haha - it’s a beautiful community based on listening and growing together through a deep respect for the giants of the past/present! if you’re a real cat, you’re gonna uplift those around you and get on the stage with gratitude and reverence
jazz is (imo) all about freedom, expression, community, and protesting powers of oppression through those things 🤗
@@MrRmmk1in terms of the drumming itself tho it was legit! miles teller is an actual drummer and played the parts he was on-screen for :D if i’m not mistaken they had another guy play for some bits where miles wasn’t directly on screen (don’t quote me on that), still tho from a technical standpoint the drumming was totally real! pretty badass imo to have the actor actually shred on screen~
On of my favorite films to watch with my dad . The laughs we got and the serious moments of it lives rent free in my head
Literally one of the best films I have watched it is art
The end payoff, I think is the best part. My father couldn't stand the abusiveness and walked out.
@@SignOfTheTimes008 your dad aint a man
I kinda got why ppl say its overrated. But i rewatched it recently, it def is top tier
@@mashedkiwis The ending I think is what makes it top tier. It brings everything Simmons character is all about, full circle. People that are frustrated by his darker ramsay like ways, need to stick it through for the 'reward' of an ending. For better or worse in it's madness, it all makes sense at the end. I just think Simmons kicking him out of his band at the end when he was late, due to the accident, was more a punishment than a mistake. He must not have realized how close he was to the goal of perfecting a student.
@@SignOfTheTimes008 I wished your had gotten to the part where the lawyer and the main character’s dad acknowledge the conductor’s abusiveness. That scene is like releasing a breath you’ve been holding for a while without knowing it. Then the end happens and it’s the best thing ever.
As a drummer who auditioned for music school, this is an all time fav film
One of my all time fave movies and I’m sure almost any drummer on this planet loves it too. You could easily see this was not some rushed performance where they learned everything in a year. Both of em are so natural and gave an amazing performance🙌
This drummer (well, *recovering* drummer) looks at it as the MOMMIE DEAREST of music movies. What a joyless pathetic quest music must be for these characters.
My personal G.O.A.T. movie. Not even a musician
Totally agree I just watched this movie awesome
I don’t know a damn thing about drumming, or jazz bands, or any band! I hardly know anything about music, but it doesn’t matter! The struggle of this young drummer in Whiplash is so easily felt, so empathetic, it’s just crazy how good it is that complete disinterest in the surface subject would be no object
honestly being a drummer doesn’t mean anything the movie first and foremost isn’t a drumming film it’s a film about losing yourself to passion and the cost of greatness
Very inspiring to be reminded that the skill and talent can come first in getting people onto a project. The most tiring element of filmmaking is how Hollywood and the big industry has oversaturated things and made it more strictly business. Refreshing to know that a brilliant script can be recognized as a brilliant script by other brilliant collaborators, who will work for next to nothing to get it off the ground..
Simmons can rock that beard better than I can.
He looks like a wizard man that’s incredible
I wouldn’t expect anybody with an anime girl pfp to 😂
@@koltennguyen9604 Actually my old chemistry teacher told me he was jealous of my beard cos of how perfectly symmetrical it was, but Simmons' is still better than mine.

This film will never leave my top 10 list
Then you'll like "the judge" with Downey Jr
One of my favorite movies ever. And I watched it begrudgingly. “I don’t want to watch a movie about jazz drumming” when I got done watching that film I couldn’t stop thinking about it for three days straight. So good.
I feel like it should be marketed more as a psychological thriller than a jazz movie lol
@@dox8148it fits both and there are even more labels that could be applied to the film.
Its a tight script that hits all the right notes and leaves the viewers with a kind of energy that I've never seen with another hollywood movie.
Also hilarious that the director thought that making it obvious in the original script that andrew was on a dark path towards the end of the film, leaving his father, etc etc would be too on the nose and spoon feeding so he made the final act of the movie much more subtle and delicate in its intentions.
And we end up with a split audience, good for discussions mind you, that thinks the movie is a happy ever after ending, failing to understand that depiction does not imply endorsement.
Such a good film. JK is one of my top favorite actors.
Until I was attending, I did not know JK was a University of Montana graduate.
Everytime I look at him I think of the instructor for whiplash and everytime I hear his voice I see Omni-man telling Mark to think
JK Simmons. One of the only character actors to become a superstar. Living proof that there is no such thing as out of our prime or the glory days are behind. It is never too late to succeed and transcend in whatever we do.
Love this❤
Whiplash is one of my favourite movies of all time, phenomenal film
That movie was destined for greatness
The beard makes him look like an old Tenzin
It hadn't occurred to me till you said so but he totally does.
I dont want a live action Korra, but if we did get one, it would be a miscast to use anyone else as Tenzin.
I mean he is tenzin so it makes sense
Whiplash is my favorite movie of all time. It’s extremely intense, but also such a crazy perspective on musicianship that it never fails to leave me inspired. That being said, the movie is nothing without JK Simmons acting
The film is brilliant to say the least. Best film I’ve seen in a over a decade.
That moment at 13:14 when Neiman tips the cymbal into Fletcher's face has got to be his best move in the movie. Not only is he finally showing the confidence that Fletcher has been looking for, but he's also finally just shutting Fletcher up.
he was beyond awesome
My heart beats so fast, i was loaded with adrenaline, my hands and feets were shaking and swearing, looking if my friends habe the same reaction watching the final of Whiplash. I want to forget it to see it for the first time.
Best movie ever. My only regret was not seeing it on cinema, I've watched it countless times and it never gets old
I probably never would have never given the film a chance normally, but I took a screenwriting elective that year and my teacher basically forced us all to go see it in cinema with him, and I’m so glad he did lol
Dudes always captivating. Even in his commercials.
He was fucking brilliant in the film
J.K Simmons is the best actor I know. When I am reminded of his character's lines, I feel as though I was the one receiving the trauma his character inflicted.
When I saw the trailer for this movie and I saw the part that JK Simmons played. I was thinking to myself. Oh I know this guy Because I had a very similar experience when I met my guitar instructor at the berkleecollege of music.
i remember watching whiplash with some dorm mates. We usually had a movie night every week and it was by far our favorite. Simmons played Fletcher amazingly
One of the best movies ever made
There's great casting and there's this match made in heaven. Whiplash was phenomenal and every single actor did a stellar job. True passion in every sense of the word.
Bro turned into Gandalf 😊
That’s amazing I just watched the short film last week and it blew my mind how a) he’s in the short film and how Jason Reitman produced it; and b) how similar his performance is to the feature length.
Wish this was a longer video.
It’s a clip from their podcast… ruclips.net/video/cel39r_pKGQ/видео.htmlsi=xpG6wcD81E6vitZD
(Interview starts about 4 minutes in).
There’s a video here on RUclips, from a drum channel, where they ask a young prodigy drummer to watch some scenes from Whiplash and separate fact from fiction. He said a few things were a bit over the top but for the most part it was fairly accurate at showing how competitive and crazy being a musician at that level can get.
What makes Whiplash unique is that you can either classify it as an inspirational film about overcoming the odds to be great, or a horror movie about what it takes to be great.
I guess I'm gonna be "that guy", but I don't really see the "inspirational story".
Andrew loses basically everything good in his life (never gets it back) and Fletcher is an abusive shitstain.
If anything, it's closer to the story of an addict and what they went through to get high.
@@SuqMadiq well it’s up for interpretation in anyway you look at it. Reason why I say “inspirational” is that yes Andrew does lose a lot in this, he didn’t have that much to begin with. His father settled for less and his own mother abandoned him. He felt he had nothing going in his life so he dedicated himself to music.
Yes Fletcher is way too strict and at times evil, but he has a very good point about music being what it is today. While there are some good music still, it isn’t how it used to be. There’s no real passion, just doing a good job, settling for less.
Andrew had to let go to become great and he did on his own terms against Fletcher.
Now onto the horror movie spectrum you can say Fletcher planned this entire thing and he lies and manipulated people to get what he wants and now that Andrew is his puppet he’s free to use him till he finds his next victim.
@@masterzombie161 I mean, interpretations certainly differ. I just don't think all of them are very good.
I just straight up disagree with both you and the character of Fletcher when you say passion doesn't exist in music anymore. Tons of passionate music exists today.
When we look back at history, we mostly remember the good stuff. You're currently living through history; What's happening now hasn't been hit with the "anti-slop" filter that yesterday's happenings have been.
There was absolutely slop back then. It just got lost because slop doesn't age well.
Not to mention, making music is a lot more accessible now. You see significantly more people give their go, so things can seem relatively oversaturated.
The only time Fletcher was right in that movie was when he had his butt handed to him and respected it.
@@SuqMadiq it’s pretty much a agree to disagree thing between us and that’s ok. It’s why I love this film it brings out a lot of ideas.
its neither lol
I’ve hated his guts in so many roles which means he’s one of the greatest actors I’ve ever seen. Love him!

He was absolutely brilliant in that film, one of the most memorable performances I've ever seen. You literally fear his character just by watching him, and he's a conductor of all things.
wow a first comment that never happens to me on a short, i've been a fan of this guy since he was on Law & Order playing a shrink & that's the first place i ever saw him on anything. he did to Spider-man (2002) while he was still doing Law & Order but that show is what i first saw him in anything.

My first introduction to JK was the HBO series “Oz.” Much like “Whiplash” he was an absolute mesmerizing and terrifying force in that show, and you could tell he was an extraordinary actor amongst all the other great actors on that show. It’s all in the pace. A good script can’t be rushing or dragging
The combination of passions at play made this movie a 10/10
One of the greatest films ever created, the passion from everyone involved just oozes out of every detail.
As a big movie guy, whiplash is underrated asf when it comes to the movies you “Must watch” because people don’t say enough of HOW FREAKING GOOD IT IS.
I don’t think I can do an interview with JK Simmons because I’ll be geeking out the entire freaking time
"Are you rushing or are you dragging ?" This and "not quite my tempo" traumatized me for life
His character (Fletcher) reminds me of an art professor I had in school. He thought most of what everyone did was garbage and had no kind of filter on his opinions. He didn't throw any chairs, but nobody got an A in his class.
When I first saw the movie in the theater I immediately said to myself right then and there that Simmons was going to win the Oscar and all other awards that season. I was like no need to wait, just give it to him now.
He is so good that he is still in character. I love when he says “… used to play drums in a hi77y bands”. The only thing missing was to say “Neemen”, instead of the name of the actor… 😂😂😂
I seen the short film today. Dayum! If they would make it into a film it would be amazing!
Whiplash is one of those undercover great movies that you just stumble upon. I’m definitely glad I stumbled upon it.
JK Simmons wanted to be a composer/conductor?! That's some crazy shit man
I never knew any of this. Makes this movie even better in my mind. Me and my son loved this movie in the theater.
But for me, it spoke of pushing things past the point of acceptable commitment. Not quite OCD, but close enough. It hit me in some sensitive areas
