The feeling of not ever letting your guard down cause this guy was going to flip or the kid was gonna break. I've never had a horror film experience from a drama like this movie. Joseph Jang It’s not like that in the movie... why the fuck is it like that in here? I know that particular like was originally “I’ll *fuck* you like a pig” but that was for the short film. J.S Simmons didn’t want to say it got the full length feature. So line was changed to “I’ll *gut* you like a pig.” The director still wanted the original line so he cut the dialog from the short and pasted it in the movie. I don’t know why that would make the audio higher pitch though.
ThomasTheSpecter actually in the full length movie he doesn’t say “gut you,” I imagine the audio was edited for trailers, but the movie itself uses basically the same script as the short.
I watched this last night, one of my favourite films of all time and hands down greatest music film of all time. For non musicians you can be captivated by the story as it unfolds being such a raw spectacle. For a musician (including myself) the appreciation of the endless pursuit of perfection, which is so rarely hit by artists (especially of today). This film goes above and beyond telling the viewer the sacrifice and commitment to achieve that one moment that can define you as a person.
I dated a deaf girl and we talked about this movie a lot. I wish that while we were together that we had watched more silent films. It would have been an interesting experience to have shared with someone with her life experience and compare it to mine. She had some of the wildest opinions and views on the world. People really shape our lives in remarkable ways and whiplash demonstrates that exceptionally.
I still remember the first time I saw Whiplash, I was with my big sister in our grandma’s living room, and we casually landed on HBO while it was playing, we just started watching it without saying anything, it wasn’t like “hey this looks good, let’s keep watching it”; we said nothing to each other, we were hooked from the get go. I still remember how sweaty I was, we were definitely at the edge of our seats and the car crash scene made my sister gasp so loud 😂 I wish I could experience it again for the first time again, because this movie is a masterclass in filmmaking
I remember seeing ads for this movie a few years ago and not paying attention and actually thinking it was a boxing movie. In reality, it feels so much more intense and physical then a boxing movie.
What i love about this movie is that it truly captures a musicians search for anxiety. I feel like im drawn to anxiety as an actress and vocalist. Even when im working audio tech im drawn to the sort of anxiety that makes everything so thrilling. I complain to my non-musician friends and they dont quite understand why i love my art if it makes me so stressed or why i keep going after the thrill of feeling anxious during a job
As a film maker I'm BLOW AWAY by this film. Everything from the cinematography to the writing and the acting just perfect. It captures the level of dedication and hard work required to be truly great at anything.
I love the personality clashing, but the similar drive both characters have with each other is maddeningly captivating at the same time. The end showcased how in sync their insanity was to find what they needed, but how much they still despised each other in spite of their search. Fantastic casting and a glorious movie.
I find myself a very harsh critic when it comes to movies, i know im not a big time movie maker or someone with credentials that might make any number of people listen to me, but movies are made for the public right, made for the people who take the time to go to the theater or buy them? This movie is one of my all time favorites (very few films reside there). The acting and subject matter is so intriguing. The editing and cinematography is for the most part fantastic. This movie made me start playing drums, and has impacted my life like no other.
We watched this again, for probably the 10th time. Amazing movie. Like others, Fletcher reminds me of my Middle School band director from the early 80’s. He was a short stocky man that was amiable and professional, but when in “music mode” demanded excellence and without hesitation would let you know when you didn’t meet his expectations. In the three years of band saw him throw chairs, Manhassat stands, berate/curse and more that could not be done today. All music would be memorized and eyes were on him when conducting. There was no comprising perfection! With that said, he also wore his emotions on his sleeve and would even tear up after a great practice or amazing performance. Keep in mind we were middle school 6-8th grade public school students-Our marching, concert and jazz bands were better than the high school band! We actually performed throughout the county for special functions during school hours. From this, even at a young age could see our talents were appreciated and in demand. Those of us who were lucky enough to have him in the 10 year period he taught, consider ourselves to be in a special fraternity and are better for it. I wouldn’t trade it for the World.
I think there’s a teacher like this in every aspect of teaching-whether it’s music, history, art, math, whatever. Pushing the student past their potential, is what every teacher should do-not just pass them.
+AsianZj whether or not it's dark really comes down to interpretation. Personally I find it uplifting and it leaves me happy. It's a man who has conquered his fear of failure and risen to the challenge of his mentor/bully. He gave up things along the way, but at the same time if he had allowed himself to be broken by Fletcher he would have become a shell of person and most likely wasted away in deep depression.
@@drop0ut606 He gave up A LOT along the way haha not just some things. He reached his dream, but ultimately, his dream requires full sacrifice of the self.
In my opinion it’s one of the best music themed movies ever made, it plays with the mind and its beautiful in the sense that the ending can have multiple meanings
A masterpiece. Such a well written antagonist, at times you go into his motives and back story which to some degree starts to undermine your dislike of him. In the end they meet after such a turmoil of events and emotions.
Simmons character was very much like my father except my father wasn’t in the quest for artistic perfection, his goal was simply to crush my spirit in an effort to ensure I never amounted to anything in life. Although his quest ultimately failed after I ran away from home at 15 and never looked back, the near-constant physical and mental abuse I endured left it’s scars that I still feel 40 years later.
JK Simmons is a beast. i'd pay cash money to see clips of his workout routine for this film. imagine juno's dad cranking those biceps in the gym day after day.
Simmons has a certain expression. From my very simple layman's perspective, it seems to be the face a ventless pressure cooker or a battery in thermal runaway would wear. The face that says "don't move... don't breathe... and you MIGHT live". Its a face that I've only ever seen before on one other person... and I was shit-my-pants afraid of him. What an actor.
Paul Reisers face when he peaks through the curtains at end is one of the most haunting 5 seconds in history. "My son is a prodigy and will probably go to a mental institution after tonight"
As an artist ii felt like a magnet stuck to the fridge door watching this. I couldn't wouldn't move, frozen. If you're serious about getting it right nothing else matters. Nothing. You do bleed, it's expected. You could smell the wanting. Well done to all who participated. More please sir.

It’s not like that in the movie... why the fuck is it like that in here?
I know that particular like was originally “I’ll *fuck* you like a pig” but that was for the short film. J.S Simmons didn’t want to say it got the full length feature.
So line was changed to “I’ll *gut* you like a pig.” The director still wanted the original line so he cut the dialog from the short and pasted it in the movie. I don’t know why that would make the audio higher pitch though.
ThomasTheSpecter actually in the full length movie he doesn’t say “gut you,” I imagine the audio was edited for trailers, but the movie itself uses basically the same script as the short.
@@thomasthespecter4455 they sped it up bro, not that deep
"Not quite my pitch" 😉
What the fuck are you down here for? There's no fucking mars bar down here...
"If I see any more of these lying around I swear to god... i'll stop being so polite, get the fuck outa my sight before I demolish you"
OMG I LOVE THIS COMMENT😭😭
Still can’t get over how phenomenal the movie was. Absolutely breathtaking.

This was one of the best films I've ever seen
Great fuckin movie. Just awesome. I too know this kind of intimidation.
I remember seeing ads for this movie a few years ago and not paying attention and actually thinking it was a boxing movie. In reality, it feels so much more intense and physical then a boxing movie.
Does anyone else hear Jonah Hill´s voice when Miles Teller is talking?... hehe weird
That's funny because I thought the same thing.
Same haha
True 🤠

I will never be able to unhear that 🤷🏼♂️
What i love about this movie is that it truly captures a musicians search for anxiety.
With that beard J. K. Simmons should do a biographical movie about Lenin.

This director is a genius. Such a masterpiece of a movie. Plus the actors are perfectly casted and deliver the best performance possible.

This movie is a work of art.
The best part of the movie is how well Simmons channels his desire for pictures of Spider-man into every scene.
Miles & JK: This was an exciting and efficient filming process
Damien: I am traumatized to this day😰
J.K. Simmons is easily the most underrated actor working today. The guy simply dominates (in a good way) every movie he's in.
I LOVE THAT THEY MENTIONED BUDDY RICH MY FRIEND!!!!!!!!
The performances were outstanding,
I love the personality clashing, but the similar drive both characters have with each other is maddeningly captivating at the same time.
This is my favorite movie EVER, nothing compares. I appreciate everybody involved in the making of this masterpiece
Everyone is talking about how good jk Simmons is , WHICH no doubt he is but i want to appreciate miles efforts and irreplaceable character portrayal
I think there’s a teacher like this in every aspect of teaching-whether it’s music, history, art, math, whatever. Pushing the student past their potential, is what every teacher should do-not just pass them.
The director has a brilliant mind and executed his ideas perfectly... through the gifts of J.K., Miles and the sound engineers.
It's great that J.K. Simmons is actually a really chill dude
These are the movies that earn respect of the audience and tells how sacred the art of film making is
The ending scene makes me so inspired to play my drums and be the best I can be.
Its apparently a dark ending. But it was exhilarating
+AsianZj whether or not it's dark really comes down to interpretation. Personally I find it uplifting and it leaves me happy. It's a man who has conquered his fear of failure and risen to the challenge of his mentor/bully. He gave up things along the way, but at the same time if he had allowed himself to be broken by Fletcher he would have become a shell of person and most likely wasted away in deep depression.
dont
@@drop0ut606 He gave up A LOT along the way haha not just some things. He reached his dream, but ultimately, his dream requires full sacrifice of the self.

Great film, can't believe I waited 4 years to watch it.
Watching in 2k21
In my opinion it’s one of the best music themed movies ever made, it plays with the mind and its beautiful in the sense that the ending can have multiple meanings
A masterpiece. Such a well written antagonist, at times you go into his motives and back story which to some degree starts to undermine your dislike of him. In the end they meet after such a turmoil of events and emotions.
I was more scared at JK Simmons in this movie than Anthony Hopkins's Hannibal in The Silence of the Lambs
This character is way more realistic and found irl than Hannibal
Simmons character was very much like my father except my father wasn’t in the quest for artistic perfection, his goal was simply to crush my spirit in an effort to ensure I never amounted to anything in life. Although his quest ultimately failed after I ran away from home at 15 and never looked back, the near-constant physical and mental abuse I endured left it’s scars that I still feel 40 years later.
J.k. Simmons is such a cool and scary guy at the same time🤯😂
JK Simmons is a beast. i'd pay cash money to see clips of his workout routine for this film. imagine juno's dad cranking those biceps in the gym day after day.
best cinematography ive seen
I really want to see the director/writers’ band teachers reaction to this.
One of my favorite movies ever
jk simmons is such a phenomenal actor
There is a lot of organic passion in this film and every aspect of life is interacting with it.
My father and I had this type of relationship. I learned a great deal. RIP dad.
JK and Miles are such tremendous actors.
Its crazy to think that Jay Jonah Jamison is able to play J.K Simmons and the guy from whiplash so well. Truly amazing
This movie was so fantastically shot and edited. Great work to everyone!
