My Dad drove us up the Alcan Hiway in 1961...1000 miles of dirt road. I thought Anchorage was going to look like this movie. I wasn't too far off...the main street wasn't paved until after the 1964 earthquake which we were there to experience. 9.2 quake for 5 minutes....but I grew to love it and still think of it as home.

It was a great song and a great movie, but I hope everyone noticed that all the scenes from the movie that appeared in this clip were filmed in the desert near the Sierra Nevada Mountains in southern California, still a great natural area, but Alaska is forest and tundra, not sagebrush and desert. Obviously done to save money during film production, as costs to ship all the equipment to film on location in Alaska would have been very high.

Big Sam left Seattle in the year of ninety-two
With George Pratt his partner and brother Billy too
They crossed the Yukon river and they found the bonanza gold
    Below that old white mountain
Just a little south-east of Nome
Sam crossed the Majestic mountains to the valleys far below
He talked to his team of huskies
As he mushed on through the snow
With the northen lights a-runnin' wild
In the land of the midnight sun
Yes Sam McCord was a mighty man

Said Sam you're lookin' at a lonely lonely man
I'd trade all the gold that's buried in this land
For one small band of gold to place on sweet little Jenny's hand
'Cause a man needs a woman to love him all the time
Remember Sam a true love is so hard to find
I'd build for my Jenny a honeymoon home
      Below that old white mountain

For over fifty years John Wayne has entertained filmgoers around the world with his work in films. He had his first starring role in "The Big Trail", made in 1930, and after that he played leads in many low-budget westerns and serials throughout the rest of the decade. He made his first classic film "Stagecoach", in 1939, which made him one of Hollywood's top stars for four whole decades. He won an Oscar for best actor for the movie "True Grit" in 1969. He passed away from cancer in 1979. at the age of 72. John Wayne was a great man, a true symbol of the American pioneering spirit. Rest in peace, O mighty Duke of Hollywood. The movies you have made, and your memory and legacy will live on forever. And say hello to Maureen O'Hara for me while you're up there.

The footage is interesting as it shows just what a ham actor John Wayne often was and yet given the right role he was actualy a very fine natural performer as in The Shootist, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence, She Wore A Yellow Ribbon and of coarse in The Searchers his finest performance. Play on Johnny Horton.

John Wayne is one of the Greatest movie stars who ever stepped on this planet's surface! But, as an East European that I'am, I also remeber with a nice feeling of nostalgy Stewart Granger playing Old Surhand in Winnetou Series which enchanted my childhood!

I used to run into Johnny's widow, Billie Jean Horton, occasionally at the supermarket in Shreveport Louisiana. It's been several years since I last saw her. I think she's passed away. Nice lady.

The punch up in North to Alaska is only bettered in Wayne's films by the Quiet Man's clash with Victor McLaglen. McClintock's riot with Maureen O'Hara is an honourable mention. Mclaglen also has an epic battle in She Wore a Yellow Ribbon where a group of soldiers try to arrest him in the fort's bar--mayhem!
