I thought it was an awesome tutorial - instead of complaining make your own video. I just appreciate that someone is taking his time to help me out! Thank you so much for sharing.
Has anyone tried this with programs like MS Office? Any specific program I should not move? I have Camtasia, SnagIt, a few games from Steam - which I am not too concerned. I am more concerned about tools like those I listed, that I use frequently.
My SSD is so full that I cannot even update my Windows 10 or MS Office, or anything else for that matter. Any advice would be appreciated.

Everyone's complaining about the explanations/talking too much. I personally like it. It's really useful to know what you are doing so you can easily troubleshoot in case your system setup is not exactly the same as his. I don't want to mindlessly follow a step by step tutorial which I don't have info on each step. You could easily brick a system that way. Great tutorial dude!! Keep up the good work.

I think that the error is because you're doing it in another hard disk that isn't the C: hard disk, i mean you're passing games or programs for example from D: hard disk to a external hard disk, i think that this command only serves to pass from C: to another hard disk, because im doing from D: to external HDD n i have that error, so i think that the solution is to pass from D: to C: and then C: to the one you want, i can't ensure you that this gonna work, im gonna try this possible solution that i thought, if you know already the solution , can you explain to me, please!!... Well.... im gonna prove the option that i thought, if it works i'll make you know, regards!!

I assume if you don't have the new location drive attached, you don't get any errors unless attempting to run the program. I'm trying to move a program that insists on installing on C: (welcome to the 1980s Steinberg Cubase...) onto a USB SSD, and, furthermore, am making it so that I can grab-n-go with the USB SSD to run it also from my laptop mapped as the same drive letter, so will need to create the Junction there also...
This should work well to let me travel with this software when I need to.

I just use a program called Steammover. It does all of this for you on its own. Just google it, and it isn't only for Steam games either. I needed to move Eve Online and Battlefield 5 to some SSDs from a standard HDD, which was super old and slow as shit. Took a bit to do, as they are large files, and it worked just fine. Games launched perfectly fine, maybe a few passwords need to be entered, which is insignificant, compared to all the steps this guy is setting up.

Hi Steve, great video. I have FSX in my old computer with lots of ad-nos and tweaks done over the years that I don’t want to loose. I’ve tried different ways to set it up in my new computer, including re-installing the game, but none of them had worked. I haven’t tried your method, but it seems reliable and efficient. My question is: If I remove the hard drive from old computer and put it in the new one and do the process you are showing in the video, would I be able to take back the hard drive to the old computer without compromising the junction? The reason is that I want to sell the old computer, because I don’t have room to keep it
Thanks in advance for your comments

This is very helpful. However, it is 2018, would these be the same steps to move all Microsoft apps to the external drive (1TB)? The intention is to "Refresh" the pc and it states it will delete all Microsoft Programs. Therefore I need to move them. I did attempt through the Settings (Win10) but the move option is greyed. Back to the question above :D.

Also, using SymMover creates this pathway This PC/Data(X:)/SymMover/C/Program Files (x86). Should I make a separate Program Files out side of C or should I just leave it as it is and use that path way to install all my programs from now on?

Hello, i don't want to bother you with my whole story, but for my question to make sense i have to tell a part of it. First of all, I'm noob into computer (though i want to improve), i have build myself a new gaming PC, got SSD for OS (Windows 10 essentially), huge hdd for games. I don't have space for games at all on my ssd drive, where my program files (x86) currently is. So far i figured out that it is pretty difficult, if even possible to move it onto anouther drive. in theory, if i was to do, only the first step shown here (robocopy "C:\Program Files (x86)" I:\Programs /sec), it would basically make that "link" as you explained earlier in video, and if i was then to install, let's say steam, into program files, on my I drive, it would still be in program files file, yet it wouldn't eat up my SSD drive space, is that correct?

Thanks for the vid! Here is my issue/question: I am still using Windows 7. I have 3 drives, 1 64GB SSD, one mechanical that is half a TB and another SSD at 256. My 64 SSD is my "C" drive and has Windows and alot of other files, some games, videos, Steam, etc that I never paid attention to. Now my C drive is so full my comp is having a heart attack. I would, ideally, like to move everything off of my C, except Windows, and move the rest to my other SSD which is barely being used. Is what you showed here the best solution to get this resolution or something else? Or, even worse, not possible?? Any insight is appreciated and thanks again for sharing!

The drive I keep my games on is circling the drain. Can I move my games from that drive to my new drive and still be able to run it when the old drive finally craps out?

I want to backup my iphone, but Itunes and the apple folder are on my ssd. I removed Itunes and installed it onto my mechanical hard drive; however, it still says I do not have enough space to back up my iphone even though my mechanical hard drive has more than enough space. Any ideas?

So, I have an msi laptop with 128GB C: solid state drive that is 90% full running all MS Office programs, AutoCad, Fusion 360 and others. But, I installed Android Studio 4.0, SDK, AVD, and other related programs on my 500GB D: drive. However, the install somehow partitioned the software so that 10GB were installed on the C: drive and about 12GB installed on the D: drive. So, I uninstalled all of the Android Studio software. I can't uninstall the existing programs, like MS Office programs and re-install on my D: drive because they came packaged with the laptop and I don't want to pay for another set.
Per your video, if my original Android Studio 4.0 on my D: drive installed half of its program on the C: drive and I use your '"robocopy" method to move the C: drive Android Studio program components under C:\Program Data, C:\ Users\JT\.android, C:\Users\JT\.AndroidStudio 4.0, etc. , will this work?

I tried it exactly as you said and it didn't work. Do I have to uncheck the read only to make this work? I'm trying to move Smith Micro Poser from c drive to d drive. Thanks

i don't get why everyone's complaining about the explanation in this video. You're the ones needing help, so you need to at least know what you are doing before you do it.

So? Question, why can't you just copy the folder and paste it on the new drive (don't really care about security right now).

  • @Kirbofir24

does this mean I have to have my other hard drive connected to my pc to make the moved programs work? (Aka since I assume it requires the Junction (shortcut) Function?)

    • @_Master_P

well yes. it needs to be connected to the computer with the programs you want to move. Unless you have some sort of wireless sata connectors. (they dont exist)

I mean I want to copy both program files and (x86). right now is over writing it or deleting which ever was there first. Also a lot of the folder containing spaces how do I make the new copied folder contain the same folder name?

Just install hard link shell. Google. Freely use explorer to move anything you want then right click pick link source, go to the same folder you moved it from, (C:\programs...) right click make junction/other options. done. This is command prompt training.

Steve, do you know how I can run a game that was installed on a different Windows OS. In my PC I have dual OS, Win 7 and Win 10. I would like to play the games I installed in Win7 using Win10. When I run them they throw .dll files missing errors which I would expect. Is there a quick way to fix it or I need to do the painful re-installs again.

this won't always work (it might!), because the program, or windows (or both) create files that aren't in the game's folder. Moving just the game folder would not work. Maybe you can if you are able to find the files I talked about, but the method in this video is easier.
