Hard Drive getting full? Can I move installed programs to another drive? Want to move programs to another drive? Can you move programs from C drive to D? How do I free up space on my C drive? How to install apps on a separate drive on Windows 10? well its pretty easy and it can be done with a simple bit of software. So how does it work? it moves program folder to another drive of your choice and creates a symbolic link. This method allows you to free up space on a full drive, games take a lot of space up and with this method, it lets you move them.

Using multiple symbolic links, it is possible to move any or all folders from the C drive to any other drive and still have the computer function normally. If the C drive is an SSD or the fastest drive, moving files used often by the OS might degrade RW speed. I am just throwing this question out to BRITEC or other experts. Thks for the great video.

  • @jasonluong3862
    @jasonluong3862 4 года назад +20

If you run out of space for programs, the best step is to remove unused programs. If still need space, just clone the C drive to a higher capacity drive. Drives are cheap. Symbolic links have their uses, but not to redirect programs. I use symbolic links sparingly because they usually break whenever there is some updates to the programs. Moreover, you have to document the links adequately to know what is linked to what. In short, the less you use symbolic links, the better. It’s meant as an option of last resort.

Fun fact, the majority of Windows programs can be moved somewhere else, without using any utility and they will still work.
I run the majority of the software I use from a d:\programs folder that I keep carrying over the years.

why microsoft didnt yet inorporate this into windows 10 escapes me completely, they update win10 with mostly unuseful gadgets wich normal people will never use
a auto symbolic link in the right click menu would be great, you already can re-locate the desktop, music, pictures, etc folders onto another drive,so why not incorporate this for programs aswell,i guess they like to incorporate more things for VR and voice assist, things i will never use, unless,if voice assist will someday be internet un-dependent

Because they know, from experience, that a future update COULD cause data loss in that exact situation ( as it HAS happened before...albeit for a few users, but still). Beyond that, I don't blame ya for the item request.

I doubt those two programs portrayed in the video will work for what I need. I would like to change the drive which Windows OS runs from. My computer by manufacturer design will only boot from my SCSI drive or my IDE drive, but I want to run the Windows OS off my SATA drive to increase its speed. I can use Robocopy to copy the programs and data over to the SATA drive and they run OK. But I cannot get the OS to work after copying it over. Is there any program that will do that? I have tried every reasonable option/flag of Robocopy. Bear in mind I cannot install Windows to any drive other than my SCSI or IDE drive. That is a motherboard limitation.

I realize this is a year late, but I'm just coming across this thread now. There was a program called Wise Installer (a competitor to InstallShield) which is now discontinued. Perhaps you can find a copy somewhere. Wise Installer had a feature called "Setup Capture". Basically, it worked by taking an image of your computer's registry and folder structure BEFORE you installed software on your computer. After the installation was complete, it would take a second image. It would then work out the differences between the "before" and "after" image, and package those into an installation file. So, this gave you an effective means of transferring an installed program onto a different system. Now, if the program being transferred has some built-in "phone home" protection to check for duplicate license issues, etc., you would not be able to use the new version without removing the original version, but that's a feature of the software you copied - not a failure of the installation program.
There are also programs like Revo Uninstaller that have the ability to "hunt down" hidden associations that allows for a complete uninstallation of software - a cleansing that goes beyond the target application program's built-in "uninstall" capability. There may be someone who has used that "hunter" technology to create an installer package that does what you want.

Always keep your drive C partition only with OS and programs, no games, no data, no downloads. Make other partitions such as Installdisk1 with programs and drivers, and swap file, datadisk1 for all your data and large outlook .pst files, music files, video files, a partition for Games, a partition for Downloads, a Partition for Backup1. Get a second hard disk same size or bigger and do the same there but put instead of number 1 you put 2 behind the partitions. Make sure your first HDD is Drive 0 on the Sata ports. The other Drive 1 and then copy everything from the first drive to the second drive except Drive C, to backup drive C you download an image creator program and you back this up in Backup1 and in the second drive Backup 2
Then you take a External drive and back up all that is on drive 1 creating different folders like the partitions and back it up there. Whether manually or with a backup program. And if you want to be super sure, you get a NAS drive with at least 4 or 5 drives set up RAID 1 or RAID 5 or RAID 6 or RAID 10 and back it up there as well or simply a second external drive. In this way you protect yourself from disasters and loss of precious data.
Yes you get many drive letters but if a partition is too small you use a partition manager to resize your partitions if or when needed.
Many laugh about my elaborate partition set up but if you have only money for a couple of good drives, this is the cheapest way to safeguard the best preservation of your Data and programs. I do this for over 15 years and over now. So you can trust me I vouch for it that it works and is safe.
There is no bigger frustration than losing your entire collection of stuff you have gathered your entire life only to loose it because you don't want to back up every other day or week.
and if you want to get a third party backup involved you can back them up on the Cloud too. I cannot stress this enough. I have seen too many screwfaces when they loose their entire life data because computers can go wrong and drives have limited lifespan.

@@Britec09 Problem is that I do not see your comment at the top of the comments. I see my comment at the top of the list followed by cjroofer's followed by VelcoityRexProductions then Kevin Colvin's etc. You are seeing the comment with the link at the top because it is your own post. The same way I see my comments at the top. However when other users view the comments your post is somewhere further down.

@@Britec09 Bri... These guys are right. There is no link to getting Setup1510/SymMover. The only link brings you back to this video.

Pretty nice! Thank you for that. I wonder if I could use that to copy programs to a Ram Drive.

I want to keep the app on both drives. Can this be used to duplicate (clone) apps? Thank you

Cloning a drive will be in exact copy on the source drive and destination drive. So cloning is your option that you need

A layman question - so bare with me. My older PC runs on Windows 7. I have new PC that runs on Windows 10. The new one has NVME M2 SSD as a main boot drive in it. In my older PC there are some apps / programs that I would like to install in my new PC. Can I clone these programs on a SSD SATA 2,5 drive (inside an enclosure or USB SATA cable) or a M2 NVME, later install it inside the new PC. Will these programs from the Windows 7 work in the new PC with Windows 10?

for some reason using Traynier's Steam mover after files are moved on the other drive I get an error message saying: 'Error running "cmd /C mklink /J "source folder" "destination folder" ". ErrorLevel=1'.

Great Tool, but doesn't take programs from OLD drive to New Drive. Need to take programs I was running before adding new drive, over to new drive. I guess I'll have to use command prompt robocopy method 🙄
