Make your programs automatically install to a secondary drive!!

  • This is my update to my earlier video about how to move your programs folder to a secondary hard drive. Please note that I recommend this for use on a clean install and it forces windows to install your programs to a secondary drive.
Furthermore, I DO NOT recommend this as a stable way to get this done and it is rather showing that it can be done as if you do it incorrectly you can brick your computer.
If your drive is getting full and you just want to free up some space watch my video on using Symmover which helps you move files without the risks that come with editing your registry

You should tell your viewers that they should do this on a clean install before the video starts...not afterwards. Thanks for the help.

This works a peach! I'd like to add one thing. Before doing any of this move your Downlods folder to D:\yourname. Otherwise you're still downloading the install data to C: and thus using a ton of precious system drive space. I especially like the way you said to change the path of all the folders. That's a great idea. Otherwise you still get a bunch of common files on C: That's a detail I haven't found anyone else mentioning. Thanks so much for your service!

    YOU SIR ARE A WIZZARD!
I have just deleted all programmes from my PC other than windows and basic stuff as it was running like a car with no wheels!
I have a 2Tb NVME SSdrive (D:) installed that was completely empty - I didn't even know it was there. Now after re-installing all of my games, 3d modelling software and other heavy stuff onto the D:drive the machine is running like lightning, just as it was the day I purchased it.... (2 months ago lol)
Thank you so much from the UK for these pearls of wisdom!

Works but its a way harder method use this: Open the "Settings" option on your PC and click on the "System" option. Then, click on the "Storage" option.
Now, tap on the "Change where new content is saved" option.
Here, set the desired download location for each category.

So, I have an msi laptop with 128GB C: solid state drive that is 90% full running all MS Office programs, AutoCad, Fusion 360 and others. But, I installed Android Studio 4.0, SDK, AVD, and other related programs on my 500GB D: drive. However, the install somehow partitioned the software so that 10GB were installed on the C: drive and about 12GB installed on the D: drive. So, I uninstalled all of the Android Studio software. I can't uninstall the existing programs, like MS Office programs and re-install on my D: drive because they came packaged with the laptop and I don't want to pay for another set.
My question is can I edit "regedit" so that all existing 32-bit and 64-bit programs currently running on the C: drive remain running on the C: drive while new 32-bit and 64-bit programs, like Android Studio, run entirely on the D: drive?
Per your video, it seems that if I make a copy of C:\Program Files and C:\Program Files (x86) to my D: drive and make the "regedit" changes for all the C: drive references under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion to D: drive, then my new programs will work but my existing programs will NOT work. Is that correct?

    • @robertfrost8452
      @robertfrost8452 4 года назад

It's better if you change the defaults directly through the windows 10 settings. If you change the registry as he suggests then it can cause some serious problems with your PC. If you already installed programs you would be better off uninstalling them. Once you set up your new storage options and defaults then reinstall the programs to that new drive. Yes, it will take time but you'll avoid the registry error problems that changing the registry may cause that could crash your PC. The best advice he gives is the idea of changing folder locations through the properties one at a time, but the quicker way is doing it directly through the windows 10 settings.

This is a dumb question, I'm kinda afraid that if I copied the program files and paste it to my HDD, the HDD's Program Files might replace it, is this safe?

I need help and I can’t find the answer anywhere. I have a ssd (c drive) and an hdd (e drive), when I try to download an app from the Microsoft store, it only shows my ssd, but when I click my pc in file explorer I can see my hard drive fine. How can I make my hard drive show up in the AppStore

First of all thanks for the video it helped I think. Second of all should you delete the program folders of your C drive once you've moved everything to your secondary drive?

Hope it helps, when I did it there were some bits the I could not remove so I left some of it there as it was just a solution till I could afford a new hard drive. Another option is using a software that will move the files. I can't recall the name but I made a video on it.
