    Here is how I moved my programs from my very small SSD to my MUCH bigger 2TB HD using Regedit.
    I forgot to mention under which folders to find the files so after you open regedit.
    Go to:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE - SOFTWARE - Microsoft - Windows - CurrentVersion
    or copy and paste this into the search bar of Registry Editor
    :HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion"
    GOOD LUCK AND DONT FORGET TO BACK UP YOUR FILES FIRST!

      But I do hope most people would watch the whole video before attempting. I personally didnt have any issues but you should back up or at least export a copy of the file locations so that you can just go back and move everything back to where they were

    And, it is the wrong method. Move Program Files to the drive you want. Make sure the folders are no longer on C drive, use mklink /j to create a link on C to the new drive where your program files now are. In this way windows will believe your program files are still on C drive.
    But you need to remember that program files on your new drive is not a copy. Try delete at your new drive and all files visible in C is gone. It makes a link from C to new drive.

    I am thinking of doing this. I upgraded my hdd with a 500 GB ssd. I yaked out my dvd rom and put my 1 TB HDD in a caddy and put it in it space. After cloning and moving my mass storage files to my HDD. I have like only used like 1/3 pf my ssd space. Is it worth it to move the program files too? Would you lose the benitfits of the SSD? I am pretty much just add a few more programs but a lot of more mass file " Vidio pictures and stuff".

    • @YoutubeStruggles
      @YoutubeStruggles  5 лет назад

      I would say it is not worth it. I did this because I needed space and didn't have money for a better hard drive and while it worked it was far from perfect and I did run into some occasional issues with updating. The app that makes a shortcut of the program file so far has worked better and I use for some programs that I rarely use. I did a video on that app as well

      @rykerbooth9169 4 года назад

      Ok but how do you just move windows and not everything in that hdd? I moved mine a few months ago and now everything automatically downloads to the same ssd as my os because that’s where program files 86 is. How do move some programs to my hdd but keep the ones I want to boot faster on my ssd?

    • @stacks1548
      @stacks1548 4 года назад +1

      So basically you want you’re hdd to be only storage and ssd to be the boot drive. So what you can do is set automatic downloads as you’re hdd (whatever letter you chose) and everything would be downloaded onto ur hdd rather than ur ssd

    The only thing you werent clear on is when you restarted you pc you said (I did had to change ALL the registries to E, but that was not shown in video) my question is how long did that take with all the software installed, I have around the same 100gb + space used and tons of software installed, not a bad idea but don't want to spend time in the registry, all though I think I can use the change all feature and just change dir C:\Program Files (x86) + C:\Program Files in one click to my other drive, but still thinking about other options of using my 3tb drive and swapping all from one to the next, but not sure which is better. Any ideas? Backup is the most important thing if the work on the PC is important to you, one mistake in the registry and you lose it all, meaning your pc might not even startup, perform, load right files.

    • @YoutubeStruggles
      @YoutubeStruggles  4 года назад

      That is all very true, this was something I did out of necessity and then thought it was fun and made the video because it took me a long time to figure out how to do it. So we have to delete both of the Program File folders after we get them in the secondary drive, or do we keep them there still? I see people that have Program files in all of their drives.

    • @YoutubeStruggles
      @YoutubeStruggles  6 лет назад +1

      I am not sure I am understanding your question. You can delete your original programs file after making the changes. As a warning windows does not handle this well and for me it was a temporary fix. Some programs start to act wonky with these settings and you'll still have to put them on your C drive like Adobe I had some issues with that.

    Also, what do you mean by 'I changed all the files to E drive so I can delete the Program Folders'? I've followed u until that step. Do you need to change all files to the destination drive?

    • @YoutubeStruggles
      @YoutubeStruggles  6 лет назад +1

      Yes, you need to change the letters to the destination drive. Those files are what tells the OS where to look.

    • @YoutubeStruggles
      @YoutubeStruggles  6 лет назад

      When you right click on the files in regeditor it should show something like C: programs/filename/somethingrather. This is like the address of the folder the C is the drive so change that to the letter of the destination drive that you copied the program folder to

    Knew it wouldn't work properly. Microsoft Office vanished entirely, and the Program Files and Program Files (x86) directories are still present on C: and containing programs even after they're supposed to be deleted.

    • @YoutubeStruggles
      @YoutubeStruggles  6 лет назад

      It took me 2 or 3 tries and still isn't perfect. In my case there were still some files that didn't move with this method, windows just isn't made to do this but theoretically possible by using the directory editor. If you find a better way let me know, I would love to know!

    • @seven-alpha-ten
      @seven-alpha-ten 6 лет назад

      Thanks so much for replying. I don't blame your method - I've come up against this problem time and again in one form or other since Windows 3.1! It's definitely an oversight on Microsoft's part. If the solid state drive is only 118 GB, then surely they would know it's more reasonable to install program files on the much larger HDD. All I've other come across are programs which move Applications to the larger drive but "trick"Windows into believing they still reside on C:

    • @YoutubeStruggles

      Yeah sometimes I think that Apple has windows beat but I just don't want to give up the flexibility of building my own system that I get with Windows

      I think when you install a program you have to manually change the directory you want to install it to.

    • @YoutubeStruggles
      @YoutubeStruggles  6 лет назад

      I think you are correct, but these days some installers don't give you the option. thus me trying to find a workaround and this was the best that I found. by going back in and changing the settings in Regedit and moving the files I had an about 80% success rate..... so yeah I know I'm dissing on my own video but I don't really recommend doing this unless you make a backup and doing it more for the fun of it rather than anything else!
