They truly are. Chateau Honfleur is in Normandy and was in horrible condition. Surprised Anna and Phillip obtained a mortgage to renovate. As in Chateau La Lande in the Centre-Val de Loire région. Is used as a bed and breakfast, in the middle of Northern France. It's origins which dates back 600 years. Chateau renovations is not for the faint of heart.

Kudos on having logs turned into good usable beams. That's a much cheaper way of getting what you need. Just a cursory glance at lumber prices in San Antonio, Texas showed a 1-3/4X9-3/4X24 at $225 dollars. Certainly much thinner than what you received from the mill. The beams showing on the outside wall looks great.
Great ideas for your drinking spots. You guys are amazing at the amount of work you both do.

Here's how to lift the beams. When a house is jacked up , they make a Zenga- type pile of pieces of wood, say 4x6's, called a crib. The beams can be lifted 6" at a time with a crow bar (lever/fulcrum), and you'll put the first 2 foot long pieces of wood down, the lift again and put the second pair of 2 footers across. So on and so forth till you get up to the height you need.

On our property (which includes an orchard and vineyard) we have 'created' several outdoor rooms. It's OK to have to use little shims under the table legs to level it. We have a lot of wind here too and move the lighter-weight dining furniture around as necessary to avoid the wind and/or too much sun (or shade 😉) depending on the time of day. I'm loving your channel more and more! 🥰🥰🥰🥰

We had a beam installed in our kitchen after taking a wall down. The maçon made a hole in the wall just big enough for the beam. Then he lifted it onto his manitou and “ posted” it through the hole into place. Then filled the hole in ! The manitou made it fairly easy.

Based on the information from Wood Boards and Beams, the current price for a 24' rough oak beam that is 8"x10" is $28.34 per linear foot. Since the beam is 24 feet long, the total price would be $680.16.

Totally understand about the wind. Here in SSF or South City where we are, we seem to be in a wind tunnel. I have a lovey back yard now, but the wind can be quite much to the point it makes my eyes water.
We tried to make a protégé garden, but between the wind and how much sun was in an area we had to plant things in different places. But I at least planted a Tangerine, lemon, lime and apple tree.
With all the trees that were falling its good some could be used for you cottage. Trees are expensive to cut down I was shocked how much. And then cutting them to a specific size, I agree you guys got a good deal. So interesting about the beams and the different ways each building was done?

Here in the States, we wouldn't use wood. We'd use steel beams cause, you know...merika. Oak beams would be astronomical. One 8" x10" x 24' beam in pine or fir is around $800. Oak? Can't find them without a deeper search but usually, what is done here, if you want that look, is to wrap the steel beams with whatever wood you want. Much less expensive.
I do have a design idea you might think about with the stone planters at the entry door. What if you put the longer one on the landing and the two round ones below? I just think, to the eye, it might be more appealing?
