- Looking back at the first 18 months renovating our stone house, grounds and land in Central Portugal. There have been some challenges along the way but, with a smile and a very limited budget, have done lots of DIY work ourselves along with a little help from our friends.

I think you should get a small jersey milk cow, a milk goat and a pony to manage your grass problem. Each eats different things in different ways. You could divide two acres to allow one acre to rest while the other is grazed. You should save some logs for growing mushrooms.

Looks like it's going to be a beautiful house and property. You've done so much work it's very hard work taking on both house and that much land but you're doing it and what's most impressive is you are doing most of the work yourselves and by hand. One thought on up keep of your land, I don't know if you can do this but here in the U.S. IT'S becoming popular to Rent Goats to clear weeds and overgrown brush and bushes, a temporary fence is up to keep them in the area you want cleared and then your just move the temp fence to the next area till it's done plus you get some fertilizer out of it. They pretty much can and Will eat anything. This might also lighten your burden of keeping the place to be in check with more ease and free up more time for other projects or just to relax.

Thank you for such lovely, kind comments. We really appreciate it. The house is situated in a dell or small valley and at the far side of our land is a narrow road that may be visible in some of our videos. We aren't near the coast or an estuary, but that would be lovely 😁

I have been through a similar process but on a smaller scale. I was still reasonably young and fit, but I would not recommend such a venture to anyone who is not up to speed on know-how, health and strength, patience, time, and, most importantly, funds.

Would like to recommend you watching Escape to the Dream. An English Family who bought an abandoned Chateau in South France . Left for dead for over 40 yrs… honestly the daily work grind and the amount of skills they learned along the way is just incredible! It’s a great channel to help keep anyone who has the strength and desire to save these magnificent properties must follow! I’m in the USA and a longtime fascination of Old homes. Here mostly the Old Farmhouses to which mine was/is 275 yrs young! Talk about a project! Love your channel

It is lovely - well done. It looks quite a grand house for that area so I am not surprised it has three wells etc . It is good to see it brought back to its former glory. As a woman who does a lot of garden work etc it is very nice to see another woman doing it rather than just leaving it to the men. On upper branches I have a small =hand chain saw which comes with a rope/string. I can put that with a weight on a doca pole (from Amazon) which basically moves the saw to quite high branches on trees - the hardest bit is getting the hammer over the upper branch but once the saw is in place I can just pull the rope on each side and it gets very high branches down - never stand under neath of course.

How old are those rock fences.
I’m assuming the original owners were a wealthy family, my mind imagining 1700’s
I imagine some of the old retaining walls on the land terraces and the water mine are a lot older than the house and like you I think a couple of hundred years old. I originally thought the house was much older too so we were surprised to find the date stone read 1910.
