I always tear up when it starts snowing. I love the character growth for Angel. And for a character that's been around for 3 seasons already, a lot of his character development starts here. I always had trouble being behind Bangel (because they are a lot and get really intense really soon) but episodes like this show me why Angel loves Buffy so much. She inspires him to be a better person

It wasn’t a demon. It was the very first evil. The very essence of evil. It’s non-corporeal, hence the need for the Harbingers. But it can’t be defeated, per se, like a demon or a vampire. For whatever reason, it wanted Angel to turn evil again, and failing that, was happy to settle for his offing himself. One can speculate as to the reasons the First would want this, but it obviously considers Angel a threat to the dark forces to some degree and wanted to eliminate that threat. Thanks to Buffy, and possibly divine intervention in the form of the freak snow storm, it failed in its plan.

    • @OddManeuver

It was always my head cannon that the First Evil released Angel from Hell for the reasons you put. Also as a way to mentally torment Buffy with his existence. i love amends for making us think about why angel is the way he is, without telling us why. and i love that the threat isn't the villain fooling him but pushing him a little to think about himself because even just that is enough. most of all i love that the heroes don't really win, angel doesn't change his mind, buffy doesn't convince him, the episode doesn't attempt to resolve his or buffy's feelings at all. the breakthrough is just "turns out angel can't kill himself today". he knows, she knows and we know that this problem hasn't been solved, it can't be - but the music and direction still appropriately treat this as a huge victory because it's the only victory available.

I'm really glad Cordy didn't remember the alternate reality. We need her to be the character who is brutally honest, often kind of mean in a funny way, but will have your back when it's really important. No one else fills that role. Oz is a great depiction of healthy masculinity at this point. I wish more masc people had watched the show when I was growing up and thought they wanted to be like Oz, rather than identifying so much with Xander's toxic traits and finding validation that that made their behavior cool. It hits so hard when Angel says, "It's not the demon in me that needs killing, Buffy. It's the man," then Buffy's reaction to it. It's a real turning point for their relationship and Angel's post-Hell healing journey.

To defend men like myself who grew up with Xander being an influence, the biggest influence I got from Xander as a character was that he had zero problem being surrounded by powerful women and supporting and loving them. He's not a perfect character at all, but he was downright revolutionary for the time in this regard. There was virtually nothing like this at the time, especially on a show for a teen audience. While we related somewhat to Xander's more toxic traits, NO MEN I know who watched the show at the time wanted to be Xander in that regard. We related to his lamer qualities that we had within us, but he was never validating. We didn't want to be Xander, we wanted to be Buffy. We looked up to Buffy like Xander did (Xander says in the opener of Season 4 that Buffy was his hero, a groundbreaking moment for me personally) and saw how we can be helpful to the Buffys in our lives.
He's also an incredibly brave character given that he's not powerful in any way, but still very eager to be a part of the fight. Mild SPOILERS, but he shows this greatly in the final season. Despite the psychological and physical harm he goes through that season, he's still doggedly determined to be a part of the fight and help and support these powerful women defeat the forces of evil.
That said, I do know a lot of OG watchers who also wanted to be Oz. But again SPOILERS, he has his big toxic fuck ups too.

Amends was one of the best episodes of S3, and for me personally a top ten from the whole show. We are introduced to The First Evil tormenting Angel through his past victims. The concept of The First is that it gave the writers a way of reintroducing old characters to add to the richness of the show, as The First can channel its evil through dead people attacking the mind of the living. The ending scene with Buffy and Angel is brilliantly acted when Buffy is trying to save Angel from daylight, SMG and David Boreanaz absolutely knock it out of the park here, and The Hallmark movie ending even though schmaltzy, just works so well with the storyline. Comic relief with Willow using Barry White to seduce Oz is funny but sweet and innocent too. Again the acting from SMG and DG at the end was superb. Another great episode keeping up the brilliant quality of S3. This is actually a very important episode in the the show. You can see that you really get the show, and appreciate the writing. S3 is just banger after banger, the quality of the episodes just improves so much.

The Wish is always a fan favourite. A great concept here with the alternative reality. We get introduced to Anya The Vengeance Demon, the moral of the episode is be careful what you wish for. Cordelia being Cordelia opens up the alternative dimension, some great comedy one liners here too, and of course foreshadowing again for the future. Cordelia's vacuous airhead friends are so cruel to her and others. Giles saves the day confronting Anya and restores things back to normal. Again we see S3 being so innovative with much better writing and storylines. It just gets better and better. I told you it's a 'bangerfest' from here on in to the S3 finale.

Two fantastic episodes in a row here.
    THE WISH
I love how this subverts your expectations, starts off as a Cordelia episode, than becomes a Giles episode. I love how it does show how important they all are and how they show how the group is split and in this world it's amplified. This is an important episode for other reasons too.
Keep in mind Cordelia also did the whole "I don't want to be seen with Xander" speel at the start, yes she grew but that's a teen thing not a misogyny thing, girls do it too.
I love the Bizarro line coming from Cordelia, it's a comic book reference. Bizarro is the name of an anti-villain who shares Superman's powers but is opposite.
In the comic that came after this but was based on Whedon's original script for the film, Buffy left after the films events and continued to Slay with Pike, but she eventually returned, perhaps here she never did. Your Faith comment is correct, Buffy's original Watcher was killed in front of her and her friendship with Pike is what helped her get through it. Here she obviously never got over it like Faith didn't, so she's going through a similar path.
    AMENDS
Without spoilers REMEMBER this episode, that's all I'll say, it's an amazing look into Angel's constant torment and why he was so detached from humanity for a hundred years originally. He was constantly tormented and in this episode we see it exaggerated. Oz is showing maturity as he realizes that Willow always had feelings for Xander and they have a connection he doesn't. Most don't usually let themselves deal with that because of their own insecurities, especially women to their boyfriends and their female friends. He's accepting that Willow may always have some love for Xander but he also knows she loves him in a whole different way.
Vampires are the possessed form of the person they were when turned. Angelus drove Druscilla crazy before turning her that's why she's like that. With Angel (Liam is his human name) he was not really a great person & his soulless self could indicate if he had live he might've turned into a psychopath. Or it could be because he was drunk when he was turned.
The snow thing is never explained but when you get into Angel you can kind of figure out why that happened. I could explain it but I don't want to spoil characters for Angel.
Xander is annoying but yeah his home life is sad and in some way pathetic and the fact he is even slightly good and not in juvenile jails shows some character

My theory about Angel is that before he became a vampire and lost his soul, he was empty. Like, there was a void inside him that he couldn't fill. The demon that takes up residence when someone becomes a vampire is influenced by the memories and personality of the person who's body they inhabit. I think that the demon that became Angel inherited that emptiness and, just like he tried to fill it with vice and excess pre-vampirism, he tries to fill it with the pain and fear he causes others. I think that Angel with a soul now is different from the man pre-vampire because, although he wasn't a great guy, he wasn't a psychopath, and he remembers everything that he, did and the enjoyment that he felt, while he was soulless and he feels guilt, shame, and remorse for all of it. Angel with a soul wants to atone and be forgiven, even though he feels like he's unforgivable.

The First was only able to manifest in Sunnydale, first to Angel and then to Buffy, because of the ritual the Harbingers were performing there. When Buffy defeated the Harbingers/disrupted their ritual, the First used up the last of what it had gotten from the Harbingers to appear to Buffy before fading.
The sudden snow falling from sun-blotting clouds seems like it wasn’t directly related to the First, and was themed as potential divine intervention to save Angel.

Although he did some more acting (Gilmore Girls) he is now best known for his writing and directing.
He wrote the screen play of the two Mockingbird (Hunger games) movies, created the show Empire, won two Emmys for Game Change, created the acclaimed show Dope Sick about the pharmaceutical industry.
Anyanka is played by Emma Caulfield. She was recently in Wandavision and will return in the upcoming Agatha show.

The thing is, I can definitely see why Oz would be willing to try again, because the others really don't know the extent of the cheating that we the audience do. To Oz, it may look like a "oh no, we're going to die here, but before we do, I'll kiss my childhood crush" moment that he walked in on. Maybe Xander and Willow admitted to the rest, but I doubt it.

I feel like every Vampire has elements of the original human’s soul and had OG human Angel had, had more chances to grow out of being a young, stupid, and an immature man, he’d of started to mature out of bad behaviours. Then again the era he grew up in, didn’t give humans a chance to self reflect. Not like the 19th Century and onwards.
When we meet him in Buffy he’s had almost 100years to self reflect (with his soul) on what Angelous did and what he as himself (originally human) was like.
100 years gives you time to mature, to shape who you are but I argue he didn’t really learn full selfishness till he met and fell in love with Buffy.
Look back from even just episode 1x1 Angel to now Angel. Even looking at episode 2x21 when we flash back to Angel seeing Buffy across the street, he was so lost. I think meeting Buffy changed him on a completely molecular level.

Cordelia's character has already changed a lot, there is even more character development to come. All of the show is about the trials of growing up, sometimes it is more evident in the other characters than Buffy herself.
I'm told that before this episode the make-up team 'vampired' Alyson Hannigan for a Halloween costume. It looked so good they felt they had to have Vampire Willow in the show.
25:45 Not everyone picks up on that.

You asked 😊 the demons aren't demons it's the first evil. A noncoporial entity that breeds evil in all things and can only take the form of the dead. Every form the first took was a victim of Anelous. Buffy and angel did not defeat the first evil. The followers of the first are also not demons they are just men with their eyes cut out that work like a cult for the first.

Powerful forces just had a tussle over Angel. One side transported him from his hell and dropped him back into his life in Sunnydale.
The First Evil took exception to this and decided to trick him into losing his soul and killing Buffy. To prevent that he chose to sacrifice himself rather than become evil again.
So the other side prevented him from doing that by making it snow. It looks like Angel is a pawn in a much longer game that we’re not privy to.

The end of "Amends" was a momentary grace note for the Slayer, and a final offer to Angel to become someone to be counted.
Liam was worthless, Angelus was as evil as he could possibly be and Angel(the composite successor personality to both)was...defeated and useless for the first 90+years of his existence.
    Then Whistler showed him Buffy.
Which both inspired him and sidetracked him(and her) into an impossible love. Happiness is not Angel's destiny, warfare is. It's time for him to "get busy living or get busy dying."

Angelous is very sadistic because part of his psychology is a form of self loathing about the fact that he used to be human (He had a lot of issues in his human life and generally sees turning into a vampire as an ascension into a greater life/purpose). As a result he lashes out at humanity and the things that remind him the most of his human life (e.g., families).

It might look so right now but even episodes like The Wish have long term impacts on the show. Always interesting that so many people always see Wishverse Buffy as being like Faith when Faith is nothing like this. Faith is all play no game while Wishverse Buffy is all game no play, if anything she is more like Kendra in that aspect.

Cordy can't remember the events in the alternate universe (colloquially known as the Wishverse) because she died there. It's not as though she undid the wish herself.
Seems odd that Anya's power centre being destroyed reversed the wish, but presumably didn't reverse other previous wishes else the primary Buffyverse would be different than it was before the episode.
Completely willing to overlook that minor logic flaw as the episode is one of my favourites.

It is usually nice and warm around this time of year in LA... there are the Santa Ana winds that blow in warm air from the south pacific. It is not unusual to find folks at the beach. So Xander sleeping outside would not normally be all that bad. Are we calling this a Buffy Miracle? hehe We did also get a Buffy-verse version of "It's a Wonderful Life!" Maybe the Universe is saying "Thanks, Buffy! For all of your hard work! And Angel too?" Looking forward to the next episode; I am hoping now that Faith is in town the two of them can stir up some "trouble!"

Has no physical form, but as you could seen in the episode, can read people's hearts and influence their minds... As long as there are people in this world, evil will remain; and as long as evil remains, so it will The First...

I see that others have explained how the First Evil was the one torturing Angel. The First Evil doesn't have a physical form. It can look like any dead person, but it can't physical touch anyone. Hence its minions with the no-eye look.
As for the snowstorm, I always interpreted this way. The First Evil spends days torturing Angel with images of his past deeds and fantasies of sleeping with Buffy only to murder her. And if there is a side for the spiritual good guys, they do nothing to intervene. But when it comes down to it and Angel is reduced to trying to kill himself, there is a freak snowstorm in the middle of a heatwave. The other side never stopped the torture of Angel... but it acted to keep him around.

Buffy as a typical Slayer, alone, bitter and so dead inside that she was unmoved by the sight of a person in chains in a vampire lair. She was walking away when Angel called out to her. Then she makes a reckless kamikaze attack on the Master...and dies with a look of peace on her face. But at least she was spared the tragedy of the mid season 3 hairdo...

I can totally understand why the alternate-universe Buffy in "The Wish" reminds you of Faith. Many interpret Faith's character as a kind "dark version of Buffy"; A Buffy that may have existed if Buffy didn't have the relatively comfortable, nurturing life she did, with great friends and strong father figure in Giles.
"The Wish" is among the most prominent fan-favourite episodes in season 3 (the best season, in my humble view). It's definitely among the episodes I most vividly remember from watching Buffy on TV as a teenager.

We, the viewers, have always presumed that Buffy made a real difference. With The Wish we get to see just how big an impact she's had.
It looks like, in Wishverse, The Harvest worked, freeing the Master, but for some reason not opening the Hellmouth. Even without the hellmouth, things were bad enough.

Idk if you already know but there’s another Hellmouth in Cleveland. That’s why Buffy’s there instead of Sunnydale. Also it’s intentional that she reminds you of Faith. Faith is Buffy’s mirror - what would’ve happened if Buffy hadn’t had a support system. But Buffy’s personality and sense of duty still comes out which causes her to act kinda like Kendra too. Because Buffy’s fighting style is so textbook here, and she’s already given up. Faith has a lot of rage and her style is as unorthodox - more unorthodox even - than Buffy’s. Faith’s modus operandi is to burn everything down with her. I don’t think she would’ve had a lot of trouble killing The Master.
