As someone who's dated a professional chef, Collete is one of the most terrifyingly realistic Pixar characters ever.
Yup. I know one too, and you ain't shittin. Professional chefs are perfectionists. Food is awesome, but when that perfectionism goes into the rest of their lives, it's really really difficult to deal with.

But she wasn't wrong, though! "Clean As Yo Go" is an excellent rule to live by. Even as a male amataur, I can leave my kitchen in nice order once I've done one of my rare dishes. i have since heard it from elsewhere, so I believe it's a truism you actually learn in cooking schools
Ego says he doesn’t swallow if he doesn’t love his food. Throughout the movie, he has a very thin look. At the end of the film in the new restaurant, you can see that his face is less pale and more full since he has been eating Remy’s food. Just a little detail I loved
I also like the detail in that transition where in he is transported back to his childhood, the transition looks like it was swallowing, it was like a different way of saying he did swallow

I'll always remember the meme that points out just how bad Linguine is at cooking. Rats don't have a gag reflex, so the fact that he made Remy gag means his soup was so horrendous that it broke the laws of nature. lol

I always liked to image that the reason Remy made it just like his mom was because the shotgun old lady at the beginning WAS actually egos mom and he learned the fish by watching her cook.

The entire final act is just perfection, Ego's speech has got me every single time I've watched it, and when set to Giacchino's beautiful score it's pure movie magic. This one has really climbed up my Pixar rankings in recent years and now it's one of my absolute favourites, Brad Bird (who also did The Incredibles) really is the GOAT
Worth noting Brad also absolutely killed it with Iron Giant before Pixar.
He also did incredibles 2 so maybe he’s not the goat anymore
@@Pearlem To be fair, the production time of Incredibles 2 had an entire year taken off of it as far as I've seen. It's likely that the movie ended up the way it did because the creators suddenly lost script-writing time that they thought they had and were forced to get *something* done in time for the rest of the production process and the release of the film.
Fun fact: the flavor animations were made by Michel Gagné, an animator who also worked on effects in The Iron Giant, and is currently making his own animated short "The Saga of Rex"

I’ve seen videos of world class chefs PRAISING this movie as being one of the best chef movies ever made. The thing they all love the most is how accuracy of the kitchen itself, how it’s a truly French design.
Also the speech at the end about critics is absolutely perfect. It’s actually what motivates me to one day be a movie, tv and video game critic.
Fun Fact: Rats (and all other rodents) are physically incapable of throwing up or vomiting, so based on Remis reaction at 10:57, the soup was so bad that it broke the laws of nature.

I loved the late Peter O'Toole's voice as Anton Ego. Speaking of which, you absolutely cannot miss his performance in his breakout film LAWRENCE OF ARABIA (1962), one of the greatest lead acting performances of all time IMO.
I thought it was Ian McKellen 😂 btw she won't sit through that movie for youtube... although i agree its a top5 of all time for me, it has influenced all the giants of modern cinema!
Laurence Arabia is magnificent, but don't miss My Favorite Year where a hapless young man has to keep a famous actor sober for a live TV broadcast. Peter O'Toole plays a wild Errol Flynn type. It's my favorite O'Toole performance.
He also play the king priam from troy... what a legend
Not to mention SUPERGIRL(1984)
As long as you're serching through O'Toole's filmogrpahy you absolutely have to see The Lion in Winter, where he plays the declining king Henry II of England, as well as the earlier film Becket in which he plays as the same figure.
As a chef of 11 years, this movie is such a beautiful way to show kids (and adults) just how important the food industry is and also how brutal and competitive it can be. Love this movie ❤

I think it was so easy for Remy to control Linguine just because Linguine had so little control of his body to begin with
Anton's review at the end is one of my favorite moments in movie history, it breaks me everytime. Ever. His transport back to his childhood is also top notch.
Brad Bird is one of the universe's great gifts to animation. He was also responsible for "The Iron Giant" and "The Incredibles". Before feature films he directed early episodes of "The Simpsons", and before that he helped Tim Burton put together a short called "Family Dog" for a TV anthology produced by Steven Spielberg. I am increasingly impatient for Bird to create something original and animated again.
You and I both! You know what they say though. We just need to.. let him cook.
You're in luck, he's currently working on a new animated film named "Ray Gunn" which should hopefully be coming out at some point in the next few years (there's no confirmed release date yet)
Rock on!! That was the one he pitched to Turner and Warner Bros. and they weren't ready to give him the budget for it .... man how time flies.
Also, mentioning the whole tutorial that Collette gives, the professional chef says, was absolutely spot on in every single detail. The whole “Elbows in…. This clean….. this dirty……” exactly how a professional chef would train someone.
I remember the first time I tried a piece of cheese with a grape, I immediately thought of this movie. I used to be an extremely picky eater but I started actively trying foods I “didn’t like” prepared in different ways, being open-minded about how flavors change when they’re combined with others, trying charcuterie boards, etc. I love food now in such a way I never thought I could. I appreciate what this movie can do for people of all ages when it comes to our relationship with food.
The flashback scene got such a great reaction from the audience in the theater. People laughed, cried, and applauded the scene. It was beautiful. ❤❤
This movie makes me legit hungry, and it's literally about a kitchen infested with mice.
Early in the film, when that lady's living room ceiling collapses with the colony of rats dropping down, that was simultaneously hilarious and horrifying.

One of my favorite quotes. Not everyone has the talent/drive/etc to be great, but greatness can come from anywhere and anyone.
As a French viewer, I have to assure you that the way you pronounced "Ratatouille" just before the beginning of the movie was definitely spot on haha!

Dude, the shot of Anton being transported back to his childhood lives rent free in my head. I watched this movie *once*, the year it came out, and I have never forgotten that scene.

I find it funny that no one ever mentions that the main dude's name is Linguine Alfredo backwards.
Also, fun facts: The character of Gusteau was based on Bernard Loiseau, a french chef who had 3 Michelin Stars and took his own life over rumors that he might lose them at the time.
Pixar hired Thomas Keller as a consultant to get the dishes look like actual fine dining dishes. Actually, the Ratatouille presentation is his own.
This is one of my favorite animated movies ever. The attention to detail was fantastic.
A fun fan theory about the movie. The kitchen and egos flashback is the same or very similar to the kitchen of the old woman in the start of the movie. The theory is is that Remi knows how to make the ratatouille so well because he lived in egos mother’s attic, and learned to cook it from watching her.

Right, when he's talking about his "little chef". I was expecting it, to be honest, because even in family/kids movies, there's an inappropriate joke that will go completely over a kid's head because either they're too young to get it or because aren't old enough to realize how common these jokes are and just assume it isn't in there.
I have a huge rat phobia. If I see so much as a rat or a mouse from afar, I run in the opposite direction. However, this is the film that made me appreciate what I taste. Thanks to Remy, I like to combine flavors for a tasty rhythm.
Two things that were important to me growing up were my mom’s home-cooked meals and Pixar. I would eat whatever my mom would make for us. I always appreciated whatever she cooked, but seeing Anton flash back to his youth gave me an even greater appreciation for her cooking.
Now as an adult, I’m surprised by who voices Remy because I’ve gotten familiar with big-time actors and comedians alike in the present. Now I can pretty much say that Patton Oswalt is always a win.
In this movie, Pixar recalls a famous literary episode by one of France’s greatest authors, Marcel Proust. Proust (1871-1922) wrote about the nature of memory in A la Researches des temps perdues. Suddenly, the taste of a classic coffee cake, a madeleine, brings out a powerful memory of a past moment (des temps perdues), a memory of childhood. Ego’s experience with the ratatouille is an homage to that famous literary moment. Great writing by the people at Pixar. It really sets this film apart.

You're right it's even more than that. As a french, in every day life you'll regularly ear the expression "une madelaine de Proust" which means a strong memory from childhood with a lot of nostalgia. It is realy well reflected in the scene of the young Ego
When remmy smells the soup and gags is still one of the funniest little animations I've ever seen, it's so perfect
My favorite Ratatouille trivia is that the animators had a vivarium containing pet rats sat in one of their hallways so they could study their movement and hair to be more accurate.
My last visit to Paris felt like it was plagued by horribly judgemental citizens. My things were also constantly eyed before i eventually got mugged and i had to get emergency documents to get home.
I can respect their constant fight against the power - but my personal experience with them just left a horrible taste in my mouth.

Also, as someone who took French for five years, I heard from all my teachers and professors that people in France will actually respect you more if you make a sincere effort to speak French, which (unless I'm even more oblivious than I thought) worked for me when I went to Paris for a few days!
This is very true. The French get a bad rep for being unfriendly and standoffish, but my experience has always been that they are super friendly and welcoming as long as you make an effort to relate to them. If you try to speak French, they will try to speak English when they realize your French isn't great. Or they will try to communicate through hands and feet 😂 and speaking French loudly, as if that changes anything. But they'll try!
This movie's always been a happy place for me. It's just so fun and feel good, one of my absolute favorites

My favorite Pixar movie, sometimes I'll just watch the Ego scene when I need a good little heart jerk. You can just feel how much goddamn effort went into the animation and storyboarding.
I absolutely love ratatouille it broke me as well and I love linguini he ended up being my favourite Pixar character just for being lovely and kind and your’re right ratatouille is a true classic (10/10).

Thanks for reacting to this one Natalie! I love this movie so much. After my wife and I took our daughter to see this when it was out in theaters, I told my parents to go see it. My dad was very skeptical because it was an animated "kids movie". I told him it was not only a great kids movie - it was just a great movie no matter how old the audience. So my mom and dad went to watch and told me afterwards that it was fantastic. They both loved it! One of Pixar's very best films.

The Incredibles is my all-time favorite Pixar movie, but this one is a *really* close second. It hits pretty much every note it needs to, and it hits them well. Ego's flashback and review are some of the best individual moments in Pixar history, and honestly the script is one of the more underrated ones in terms of a comedy perspective - pretty much every single kitchen scene is downright hysterical.
Still my favorite animated movie, ego's speech change how I look at media even to this day!
The scene where the critic finally tastes ratatouille and has a flashback is one of the most beautiful moments in modern animation.

small detail: the old lady with the gun at the beginning of the movie is actually Anton Ego's mother. If you look closely enough you can see that both the house/kitchen where Remy and Emile break in and the house/kitchen in Ego's flashback have the same inventory
This is a joyous film with wonderful lessons in it for us all. The old adage which says "If you do what you love you'll never work a day in your life" comes to mind.

Saw this in theaters when it came out i was at that phase saying these kids films suck. Boy was inwrong i loved it, and its still one of pixars masterpiece
That's one thing that I don't understand, people have the tendency to associate animation with children, which is not the case most of the time, some animations are incredibly dark and not really appropriated for kids lol

I don't care much for cooking, but I love animals and fell-good movies, and this movie is by far my all time Pixar favorite, even tops the amazing Inside out. I watched both countless times.

This movie always hits my emotional spot with that tasting scene with Ego, cause Remy’s food is so good it brought back memories of his mom’s cooking. It hits hard cause it makes me realize that a time will come where I won’t be able to taste my mom’s cooking anymore. That always make me emotional.
I'm French and very happy you enjoyed this movie.
The love of any parent is not easily quantifiable or explainable but that scene with Ego is the closest we can get to it. Its simple but so effective. My only criticism is that they didn't sit with Ego's reaction a bit longer.

My favourite Pixar movie. As an animator myself in film, I absolutely love the animation here, it's absolutely beautiful.

4:00 That whole beginning spiel, I can speak from MY personal experience in Paris, they (Parisians/French ppl, in gen) are wonderfully nice & helpful!
Over 20 years ago, me & my bestie did a Eurotrip & went to Paris. Everyone else was telling us "Oh, the French, they hate Americans. They especially hate it if you don't speak French" etc. So it got me super anxious...I took French classes (on my own), but long story short, all that goes out the window in emergency situations 😅!
We got lost a few times & needed help finding our way back to our hotel. Everyone was helpful & willing to get us back on track.
The emergency situation was a shuttle service NOT picking us up for our flight in the morning & basically NOT telling us they decided not to get us. We got someone to call the business for us -- he actually offered bc he said the conversation would go faster in French -- & figured out quickly we kinda got scammed. He gave us directions to catch the trains to the airport AND gave us fresh croissants for breakfast & as an "apology" for the shuttle service, even tho HE saved the day & had nothing to do w/it.
Outside of mainland France, I've spent many months in French Polynesia 🇵🇫 & they too are incredible! Tho I will say that's probably more to do w/ my Polynesian connection (being from Hawaiʻi) & Tahitians.
^^all that to say, TRYING to speak their language & atleast being genuinely interested/loving their culture goes a long way...no matter the country/people.

Anton Ego's review is one of the deepest and most beautiful moments in Pixar history. Much like the theme of this film it is very much like a fine wine. It truly gets better with age.
This is my favorite Pixar film and you nailed the reaction! As a creative, a lover of food, and a sucker for some good ol' wholesome storytelling - this one hits home on so many levels.
The Anton Ego review and the ending just made me tear up, what a magnificent and masterpiece ending.

Still one of Pixar's best movies to date - if not the best overall. Ego's trip to his childhood always hits me hard.

For a long time this was my favorite Pixar movie. One of the simplest ones in plot and stake, but just so wonderful.
This will always be my favorite Pixar movie
In my graduate studies at Clemson I had a professor of history who was in particular a Francophile. We were studying a work by Marcel Proust in which there is a sudden transport back to childhood upon tasting a food. I instantly knew that was what was being referenced in this film and thought it was a wonderful connection. I subsequently let me professor know about the movie, which he at first thought wouldn't be serious since it is an animated film, but the irony to me is that he enjoyed the film, therefore making him, the food critic, and Proust all connected in the same return to childhood type of way!

One of the things I love about Pixar is that the films always work for both the kids and the adults watching it. There is always more depth, and depth behind the depth, in these funny, well-told stories.
When we were last at Walt Disney World, we ate at the restaurant in the France pavilion at Epcot Center. At the end of the meal, they brought out a little tray on which the chef -- Remi, of course -- stood and accepted our praise (bowing).
I worked a long time as a cook and the film resonated with me as an inspiration to cook for myself. Before it was just that cooking was all I knew how to do so I only cooked at work because I needed to but I rewatched this film and it reminded me of what I loved about food and why I wanted to cook as a kid. It's also what I point to when people tell me they can't cook
