Andre would’ve been the perfect love interest for every main girl. Tori and Andre would be such a healthy relationship for kids, he’d help Jade be less toxic/worrisome, would help Cat be more mature, and could’ve given Trina the spotlight she deserves
Jade and Andre would've been so wonderful. That episode where he develops a crush on her cuz he found her voice so lovely is my nickelodeon roman empire. Like she could've been his muse who inspires him to make more songs cuz he just loved hearing her voice so much and she could've loved how beautiful his songs were and how she could tell he made those with his feelings for her. They could've brought each other's sweet and more sentimental side T _ T
I remember really liking that Tori and Andre had a nice platonic friendship between a boy and a girl, which was so rarely seen. But it is obvious that Dan Schneider only did that because of racism. I did love the Andre/Jade ship though (but not as much as Tori/Jade)
@@justalula7151jade and andre is one of my favorite ships. I know Jade felt comfortable with him because they were friends, but I liked that she could calm down and just be herself when they were writing songs together. She is so on edge with Beck. I feel Andre and Jade can balance each other out. I feel Andre can help her loosen up a bit while she helps him become braver, if that makes sense.
Another show that reminds of is American Dragon, where the mc has a female black best friend but ends up with a blonde white girl.tbf best friends of the opposite gender don't always have to end up together, but I generally I have seen they will pair off opposite-sex bffs in shows. So it's food for thought

As a black girl, I noticed this at an early age. Specifically that races will date their own race in all the movies/shows that I watched. Seeing Cinderella with Brandy was the most amazing thing for me.
Girl! That movie forever changed my brain chemistry! To see a black actress as the lead in my one of my favorite fairytales as a child, that little bit of rep was cathartic (and i was only 4/ 5 years old then)
Bonnie did date. The problem was that they purposefully killed off all of her loved interests. That’s worse than being undateable. It’s saying you don’t deserve love
I mean...plus the people she dated weren't serious lead character prospects. Best Friend's little brother who cheats on her? Step Brother? Guy who was in love with everyone else first? *sigh* Edited to update Jeremy's descriptor. Because oh yeah, he cheated on her with a ghost.
I learned that the lead writer actually felt that way on purpose-- she was raysist and didn't like there were color people in the show but the cast said they would quit if she k1ll off Bonny. So she purposely abused her character by having her abandoned over and over so the actress would know how she felt about her. So sad
@user-wh2bs9tp4y Bonnie in the source material was supposed to end up with Damon, and Delena never happened in the books. Delena only exists because Nina and Ian got together in real life, and turned toxic when they broke up to the point Nina had to get written off the show.
That guy shouldn't be "so proud of disney" for finally caving, he should be proud of himself for not tolerating their appeasement of bigots to maximize profits.
It's clearly that he had to SAY he was "proud of them" in order to somewhat "redeem" them in that story, otherwise Disney would've ruined him. he says multiple times that the bigotry was ridiculous, but then has to backpedal and say he was proud of Disney
@@life4rent90 Interesting. That could explain Will Smith and Eva Mendes costarring in Hitch and the weird reasoning as to why, especially in 2005. Eva Mendes was cast as the female lead due to an irrational fear of some audiences potentially getting upset with seeing a black man and a white woman romantically interacting on screen. The studio was also scared of two black leads scaring off white audiences, so Eva was seen as a happy medium. The studio heads most likely didn’t want to see Will and a white actress in romantic scenarios. 🤦♂️
It would’ve made sense. Though I probably just wanted to see the only black main character in the show actually get a consistent and not painfully one note love relationship lol.
as a black girl, this shit really makes me sad. it’s always made me feel undatable, and I’m sick of people who will gaslight me into thinking that this crap doesn’t happen in media to even give me this mindset in the first place.
I’ve always noticed that the token black person is super funny/ goofy, extremely well reserved, mean or aggressive…..like we are incapable of being affectionate or vulnerable
@@leoskiss3390 And we're always propping up the main character. Our character(s) doesn't get to have their own problems. I love The Shape of Water, but it's VERY that. When they (finally) showed about the sister's private life, it was one scene, and even then, it was based on the main character's problem(s). The white male best friend got a lot more insight into his life. We knew more about him than the creature.
It does tragically translate to real life. There have been so many uninteresting people who get snapped up into relationships because of this type of brain coding. you’re not allowed to be seen as a person outside of the context of friendship. And I know this because it has had outsized impact in my life as a fellow black girl.
I'm not a woman but I am black, and I've grown up feeling similarly too. You're not alone, and I'm sorry it's been that way for you. One day when it really counts you'll find someone who looks past all that and values you for you. It's hard but it's not impossible.
I love how the director was like '..yeah? and?" Seriously though, how was this ever a problem and still can be a thing?! Racism makes 0 sense (rhetorical way of speaking)
Because racism is real, deeply rooted in this country, and it still exists today. So yes, it would’ve been a problem. It would’ve been another reasons for parents to not let their children watch the show.
@@Zzz2x Ah yeah, I do know the sad reality of it. I wish it wasn't. My comment was more a rhetorical way of speaking. Not really a joke per say, more so as in I seriously can't grasp racism like understand it by actually thinking that way.
Racism is not tied to logic, it is tied to control. It is easy to understand when one connects it to the same control tactics used on other groups, like women or people or other religions. It makes perfect sense in the framework of capitalism. And this is coming from a black woman lol so believe me, you will drive yourself crazy trying to find the logic
I know The 2007 Bratz was a majority POC group but the fact that all the the girls had love interests except for Sasha (the only black girl) made me side eye that creative team behind the movie
Omg i just watched Bratz the other day and thought the same thing too like??? They couldnt at least write in a cute jock for her cheerleader position? Smh!!
they were also ALL at LEAST half-white. I can’t believe no one talks about this aspect enough. The black character they chose was nowhere near as dark as Sasha actually is.
Raj from Big Bang Theory hit me hard because I know he was the most shy out of all his friends but Allowing Sheldon to have a relationship and not him was point blank diabolical
And not for nothing--Raj was a catch! He was cute, he could cook, he was great with kids, he was a brilliant scientist with a cool job, he loved animals, was a good friend, and his family was loaded. He had his issues, but he took steps to actually work on them. He overcame his inability to speak to women, after his family cut him off he learned how to be self sufficient, and he even convened his exes to find out what he could have done better. He deserved his happy ending.
@@cv8499 i also find it bizarre because there was no way he wouldn't have a girlfriend in real life. I grew up in an indian american neighborhood and nerds do not struggle to find girlfriends because Asian conceptions of coolness does not preclude being talented in math or science lol. like that's an appeal, actually. Americans have stereotyped this to death, hur dur asians are nerds, but that's just because they're a racist, anti-intellectual culture lol. it'd be like if cops stereotyped office workers as fuddy duddy nerds--no, you're just overly violent bullies with guns where your brains should be. this is reductive, but i hope people get what i mean Not to mention the fact that arranged marriage in indian culture does not preclude true love either, even if the west hears it and thinks 'forced marriage'. it's just like... tinder but with your family's friends' daughters lol like make it into a cotillion. Like... a romantic like Raj would have no problem with that, but i feel like they were writing off westernized stereotypes... again. i feel like Raj would have a much easier time than sheldon, to say the least.
@@allyli1718 Agreed on all of this! It was pretty clear that there were no Asian/brown people in that writer's room. Or not enough, anyway. I went to a specialized high school designed for math and science nerds. It was predominantly Asian, and believe me, they pulled. Raj would've done just fine. Brains and kindness are turn-ons.
Raj is insecure with women and himself. It’s not deep as to why he can’t date. He has a lot going for him but is a mess. He wants 10s but won’t do the work for it, and he’s more than halfway there. By the end he’s working on those issues but the whole series is him fucking up, he is aware why but doesn’t change anything. Sheldon while not liking ppl or dating, and lacking social cues is more of a complete person. He doesn’t have those insecure hang ups. He is confident in himself as a person and skills he possesses, other girls like him but he doesn’t like the back. He compromises and learns the most in the show for a person who does not like change. Amy calls him out on his bs and he works on it. Sheldon is logical, He still fucks up but is willing to put the work in. U guys are all looking at the casing and not what’s inside, yeah he’s a nice rich nerd but has too many problems to make functioning relationship if he doesn’t change. All his exs even help him see what’s what, so it’s not that he can’t score, he just has a lot of issues that are negatively effecting that. Sheldon is autistic with social problems, but ppl like confidence and interesting. He has that, it’s why Amy loves him so much even if it’s frustrating
@@RedVelvetUnderground333 I would push back heavily on this idea that you have to be a perfect person in order to deserve love. NONE of the characters on the show are perfect, and the couples definitely weren't when they got together. Right before Howard met Bernadette, he was hooking up with sex workers and hitting on anything that moved. He lived with his mother and expected Bernadette to be his mommy 2.0. He lied and schemed to get women, and when he comes back from space, he's so full of himself that all his friends are sick of being around him. But still he landed a loving partner. Leonard has enough mommy issues to fill a magazine rack. He also sleeps with whoever will have him, and even once he lands Penny, his jealousy and insecurity comes up often (like when her ex offered her a job and he demanded that she not take it). He belittled her acting aspirations and cheated on her while he was away on an expedition. He is relentless about pushing her to say "I love you" and according to Penny, isn't that great in bed. And yet he ends up happily married with a kid on the way. Sheldon for all his character growth is still rude, self-absorbed, and insecure. He demeans Howard for not having a doctorate, he insults Penny's intelligence on a regular basis, he manipulates his friends to get what he wants, he is instantly upset when one of his colleagues--even Amy--achieves something great.Though he knows Amy would like to be intimate more often, he will only sleep with her once a year. He's so awful to his friends that right up to the finale when he was accepting a Nobel Prize, they weren't speaking to him. And yet, he ends the show with a wife at his side. But you're telling me Raj's shortcomings are so bad that he didn't warrant the same consideration? Come on.
This reminds me of in high school musical. Zeke and Sharpay had a cute little thing in the first movie that ended with a moment of her going nuts over his baking. Then nothing! He was shown to have a crush on her, why not take it further instead of just ignoring it from then on? Hes charming, they look great together and they have good chemistry the little we saw. But they just had to default back to Troy. Also resetting her character to the beginning. So on both ends it hurt the story
@@jiya-jn6bb But instead they had to have the two black best friends be together. It makes sense in many ways, and I'm happy to see a black pairing, but I think that Chad had more chemistry with Ryan.
We were ROBBED. Zeke x Sharpay would’ve been so cute!! Imagine her becoming more down to earth bc of Zeke, then Zeke becoming more confident bc he hangs with Sharpay. I think in some of the spin off books they made of the movie it might have been hinted at, but we should’ve gotten them on screen!!! They didn’t even go to prom together in HSM3 😒
the way gmw treated angela’s character + how her relationship with shawn was invalidated and disregarded was so despicable. they villanized her for no reason
It wasn't... Shawn always tried to make their relationship like Corey's, they loved each other but in the future they just don't work out and find second love.
@@liltmarshall8717They’re talking about in Girl Meets World, not bmw. bmw did a really great job with angela’s character and treated her as a regular person, not as some kind of “black girl”
Hmm I’m confused, how did GMW do Angela dirty? Haven’t watched the episode in a long time but I remember that she came back as a guest character to kind of nudge Shawn into going with Katy so he doesn’t lose a woman again. And something about her getting engaged, I don’t remember the episode treating her badly
Bonnie arguably had the worst situation out of all the characters bc not only did her actress get treated like an outcast behind the scenes but ALL of her male costars have expressed how much they wanted their character to end up w/ her in the series. 😭😭
Exactly and they can’t even use the fact that they weren’t popular as a excuse because that’s BS they were the most popular pairing on the show. White and black fans. Wanted to see Henry and Charlotte get together.
Yah and the racist show runners gave us all some BS reason like oh “The show was about Henry and Ray so Henry couldn’t date Charlotte.” But Henry went on to have tons of white girlfriends including Babe from game shakers, though everyone wanted Charlotte and Henry together, and it wasn’t like they had a good platonic relationship either, the show treated Charlotte like shit, especially towards the last episodes we’re they made her feel lower than the other cast members, that always made me very angry to this day.
Sheldon should’ve been the character who didn’t end up with anyone in The Big Bang, not Raj. Watching all the guys with someone and not him makes me quite sad
Raj’s storyline was so impactful to me, I’m always the odd one out, always the poc in a group of white people. So seeing Raj be the only one who is unloved really hit home for me.
I've had a similar thought like yours for years. Sure I understand giving Sheldon a love interest to further develop his character but why not give Raj a girlfriend at least towards the end of the finale? And Stewart of all people got to have a romantic love interest but Raj can't get one?
This is a problem I even noticed when I was a child, it seemed like every show where the main characters were all dating each other HAD to have a POC who dated out of the friend group and in their own race generally. The only circumstance that deviates that I can think of is Fez and Jackie in That 70's Show.
fez is not a good example imo, he was jackie's last option and most people hate that season and never even mentioned it. for the rest of the show him being undatable was a whole running gag
To be fair all characters including the white ones usually date within their race. That’s how it is in real life to. Interracial couples are popular but not more common that mono racial characters
11:47 they do. They 100% hate that woman. They kept killing her off intending to fire her, but Ian (Damon's actor) threatened to walk if they fired Kat.
That's actually been disproven a bit. Yes they were close but it was actually in his contract that he'd walk if Enzo died and then just got a little twisted with time.
Brandy’s Cinderella movie was so important to me growing up. A Black woman with another man of color (Asian) as her love interest and she experienced a happy ending with him. I want to see more Black women get to be soft and vulnerable and have romance in media. Even Bridgerton fails at this despite the diversity, NONE of the Black women have truly happy endings.
Even in monster High gen 3 they turned clawdeen into a lesbian. Which is fine but I've noticed a pattern of this. They want to show balck women as undesirable so to fill the woke quota they scapegoat us as lgbt as to take us out of the equation all together. Its also messed up they they used queerness as a scapegoat to subtly show that black women aren't desirable to straight men. "Were not racist or ignorant we have a black lesbian!" But in reality it's just a cop out. And bridgerton just passed me off aswell.
Not to mention, apart from Lady Danbury (who isn't even a romantic lead), all the black women on the show are light skinned/mixed race. The only dark-skinned women you see are background characters and Michaela- who is merely a genderswapped Michael and will probably take on the "masculine" part in her and Francesca's relationship. I was really hoping Michaela's actress would be Sophie, but I think they're going with an Asian actress for her. Kind of put me off of watching Bridgerton again (though I might change my mind- just stopped engaging with the fandom).
From what I remember in Monster high it was because they wanted Clawdeen to be gay but Mattel wouldn’t let the creators do that so they preferred nothing over having her date a man
True, Andre was the most chillest, mature and more talented than Beck imo; Andre could sing, dance, act and play multiple instruments, meanwhile Beck could only act and dance. It also didn’t help Beck being a girl magnet, which would make him reluctant to keep his distance and emphasize his affection only for Jade.
No it wasn't. There was no romantic chemistry between them at all, they were like brother and sister. Andre never looked at Tori the way he looked at Jade or at the girls he dated. Tori never looked at Andre the way she looked at Beck or Jade.
@@truthseeker9249because we never got the chance lmao. It’s not always about that spark, they’re friends so it would be more comfort than electric. 2. All interracial pairings have been considered controversial to some degree, but I’ve always noticed that a black and white pairing has always been seen as the most taboo. For whatever reason an interracial kiss between a black and white person is way more controversial than other pairings.
@@Tronn9672makes sense. I guess. The media’s past with interracial relationships will probably never make sense to me depending on the time period. @@Tronn9672Disney Channel, the network that was hesitant of showing an interracial kiss, is the same network that aired the use of both the n-word and the k-word (offensive to my home country 🇿🇦) in a DCOM called The Color Of Friendship, aired in 2000.
I think there is also a gendered aspect to the racism here, like when I think of the interracial couples (where one half is white) in Disney, it's always the woman who is the woc and the dude is the white one. As you mentioned, Esmerelda and Pocahontas, as well as Kida from Atlantis (Atlantian is not a real ethnicity obviously but the culture was clearly presented as non-white), Gabriella from HSM, Nini AND Gina from HSMTMTS. It's interesting that they basically never show a non-white guy with a white girl, I wonder if it's those really antiquated racist stereotypes around the "purity" of white women.
@@ActuallyAnanyaI mean…obviously Esmeralda and Pocahontas needed to be POC because they were in the original stories they’re based off of, and the plot wouldn’t make sense for either member of the couple’s race to be different there. It’s kinda the same deal with Kida in Atlantis, except that’s not based on a story. Also just stop overreacting, there’s no racism going on.
As someone from a liberal state this concept was recent understanding for me. They feel good bc they don’t outwardly outcast you but you’re literally basically an npc to them
I’m pretty sure Mercedes was only with Sam because the Glee fans were upset that she never got a real love interest, so they just lazily put them together. Although they made a great dynamic, they were both so kind and accepting to everyone, they deserved each other
Fair! I really liked them S2/3 but they were so fickle with each other S4 onward. And Sam dated nearly every Glee girl, idk it felt less meaningful as time progressed. They'll always have some of the best music numbers though (Human Nature, Summer Nights) so I can't complain too much.
I felt back in the day Sam and Mercedes just showed up out of nowhere and I wished if they were together they had more development the one scene in the prom episode of season two. Also the fact that it felt random when Sam would be interested in Mercedes again. One minute he's all into this one girl and then the second Mercedes is going to be in the show more, there he is claiming she's to love of his life. Mercedes deserved a better romance for the show.

This is why Rick and Michonne on TWD has always been so groundbreaking for television. TWD is my favorite show and I will find any excuse to talk about it. But its actually relevant here. If the show had gone the route the comics its based on went, Michonne would've fallen victim to this same trope. In the comics, she doesn't date Rick and she only ever has black love interests. But in the show, they changed that and its been revolutionary for tv.
Nah talk your stuff the walking dead is my favorite too. I STILL see people say Rick should have been with Jessie or Andrea or MAGGIE. Anyone but Michonne. Got a whole spin off and they’re still mad 😂
The Walking Dead came out the same time as Sleepy Hollow. If I were placing bets I would have lost lots because I was sure Ichabod and Abbey were going to be a couple before Rick and Michonne (I read TWD comics so I didn’t think Richonne had a chance). I was so happy that Richonne sailed! 🥹 Sad about Ichabie 😒 though. (Justice for Abby Mills)
@@xletragedyx Because they dated in the comics. She was essentially his Michonne in the comics even if Michonne herself was still a character. So that's why people shipped Rick and Andrea. Audience didn't really take to Laurie Holden so she was written off the show. She was originally contracted for eight seasons so that very well may have been the original intention for her character. It was never gonna work, though.
One of the oddest parts of this trope is that often the character is one of the most appealing from an actual dating front. Partly goes into the "model minority" trope, but characters like André or Bonnie came off as genuinely charming and sweet in such melodramatic or bitter casts and they'd always be my go-tos in terms of who I'd actually want to date. It only makes the fact they're never even *considered* on option all the more egregious.
You'd be surprised how much it happens irl. Not necessarily cause of skin color, but "this person is amazing for me, checks off good romantic qualities and is interested but i will not pursue because reason xyz (or sometimes no reason at all)". I'm definitely guilty of it, I'd say I've also been on the receiving end but that's tooting my own horn too much for implying i know for a fact I was a good match to anyone that's left my feelings unreciprocated lol
as a black girl, i was never taken seriously whenever i had a crush on someone of a different race. i got laughed at. it was treated as a joke. i feel like that's what some of these shows are doing. they don't take interracial couples seriously
It wasnt until years later that i realized Andre and Tori never got together. My family dropped cable during season 2 so I didn't see half of it and just assumed it would inevitably happen. Implicit bias is wild
I didn’t watch the video yet but 1.) the writers confirmed they were gonna put Tori and Andre together before the show got cancelled. They have a lot of chemistry and although they are a nice representation of a platonic male/female relationship they definitely could’ve worked. Andre also had chemistry with every other cast member like his plots of going through several women was so weird bro. 2.) I saw somewhere I’m not sure though that Bonnie and Damon were actually supposed to get together or they have something in the books? But the producer, or whoever, had it out for Bonnie’s actress due to racism so that was never gonna work idk. 3.) The chemistry between Henry and Charlotte was undeniable. Just like Tori and Andre they were really good representation for male and female friendships. However everyone shipped them and they knew that to the point of teasing it twice. Which made no sense because they had Henry go through all that turmoil of different girls when the closest person to him through everything was Charlotte. If she was white their relationship would’ve been romantic way earlier on. 4.) Glee was mad messy for having the whole friend group date each other but the way they have Sam go through EVERYONEEEEEEE when he had the best chemistry with Mercedes I just don’t understand. I love all these shows but watching it as a black woman it’s just a slap to the face and racists want us to just take scraps like why can’t we(poc but also specifically BLACK characters) be represented in fun romantic storylines just like everyone else ? We are always just a side character that usually either carries the whole show and/or just comedic relief. It’s crazy!

This reminds me of the massive hate people had for Leah Jeffries as Annabeth in the new Percy Jackson series and Halle Bailey as Ariel in The Little Mermaid. They just can’t see black people as the kind, romantic leads. Those two especially did a great job at it, but they’ll never know cuz they refused to watch
Ariel was especially stupid because she’s half-fish. Also considering the remake, the actress race is literally the only thing NOT wrong about the movie probably. About my only concern with racebending is if a character of color gets whitewashed and if racebending ends up overtaking using either or existing characters OG color or making original ones. Quite frankly it’s a lazy substitute.
@@starrsmith3810 I think the criticism with that is valid idc. Idk if Ivy is a good example for this because the white cast was mostly family in this situation so it's not like they were dating amongst each other either. And I think she did get with the brother's friend eventually but I may be remembering wrong
Same thing is low-key happening in The Bear between Sydney and Carmy. Suddenly they’re strictly platonic soulmates with ‘platonic intimacy’ whereas their actual on screen chemistry could definitely develop into a meaningful romance
Took the words out of my mouth. I’ve seen people try and say sydney is like asexual or a lesbian, which either would be fine but I feel like that’s just an excuse to not have her be with Carmy.
Yeah I was very disappointed with the direction they’ve chosen for these characters it just doesn’t make sense after the very romantic energy they had around them in season 2
I think when I first saw the show I wanted it to be romantic, but I kept watching and the writing is great, and their relationship is so written so well that I figured it could go either way and I'd be happy---BUT IS THAT NOT LITERALLY THE CONCEPT OF A WELL WRITTEN 'WILL THEY/WONT THEY' ROMANCE???? The fact that I can feasibly see them as friends and partners for life is a tool that other shows (Law and Order SVU comes to mind) use to support a slow burn romance. I am not surprised they are throwing their amazing romantic potential away and I do think it's because Ayo is a black actress. If a white actress gave that much chemistry it would not be a second thought that they'd take advantage of it and put a romance on screen. I'm upset cause they'd be hot together mainly tbh
Right idc gmw does not exist at all to me like that show is not canon and none of what happened in the show is a continuation of bmw don’t care I said what I said
@@TheSuburbanBase exactly shi is not real but a figment of imagination Eric and jack were still close friends, Shawn and Angela were endgame, and Cory and topanga were Cory and topanga or whatever I don’t really give af about them
This is why I’m excited for the new Percy Jackson series. Now that annabeth is black, we’ll be able to see this trope not play out. But what I found interesting is when they released info that annabeth would be black, a lot of fans suddenly said that they wanted to see Percy and annabeth as friends and not as end game 😒
I wouldn't be surprised Rachel in the show was white and people suddenly started shipping Perachel, when it was originally the most hated ship in the fandom.
And they'll point to the books and say that it's a child of Athena thing to be blonde and gray-eyed. Never mind that it's a completely fictional thing that can be changed to accommodate a greater casting net. Nothing in the story changesnif Annabeth isn't blonde or gray-eyed.
This is why I like shows like Brooklyn Nine-Nine. The show is rather progressive, including two interracial couples (and treating them like it's completely normal), a gay couple (that's one of the interracial couples), two prominent black male characters who aren't just stereotypes, and two prominent Latina female characters who aren't just stereotypes. The show also addresses topics like racism, sexism, and homophobia in a meaningful way and doesn't pat itself on the back for it. In fact, the actresses who played the women of color, Melissa Fumero and Stephanie Beatriz, were confused because the show casted two Latina actresses. It's just a great show in general, being able to balance comedy and drama almost perfectly, so I highly recommend watching it.
And an interracial father-son: Holt and Peralta 💕 but fr yes it's a great show. It would be crazy to make a show taking place in NYC and the cast looking like the cast of Friends or SATC
Not just saying this as a huge fan of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, but you hit the nail on the head. It is one of the very few series that doesn't treat diversity like a token. The fact that it is set in New York could largely contribute to that fact but there are many shows based in diverse areas that do not make so much of an effort as Brooklyn Nine-Nine did. Truly a great show that I highly recommend everyone watches at least once.
@bruhvibes5941 her parents are Cuban immigrants and she's a self described Latina. She's also stated the French-Canadian remake of B99 Whitewashed Amy Santiago by having her played by a white woman. She herself does not identify as Caucasian
The funny thing about Amber's case is that originally in the Invincible comic the character was a blonde girl with blue eyes, it was Mark (Invincible) leaving a white girl for another white girl, but apparently they said nope we have to fall into the stereotype.
@@kimberleywilliams7802the character did get hate it’s because of just bad writing from the writers part on how they written Amber when she found out about mark’s secret identity
Elena and Caroline got a variety of love interest throughout the show. Or man that validate their beauty. But for some reason Bonnie didn't. Despite Bonnie being insanely beautiful. I remember earlier season the guy working with Anna called her desperate. So basically him using her is the only reason he expressed interest. Her main love interest on the show Jeremy cheated on her with a ghost. In later seasons I remember Damon saying she's always the bridesmaid never the bride. Then Enzo who seemed intentionally into Caroline suddenly become Bonnie's love interest. Once comparing it to her peers. Bonnie was just as beautiful as Elena and Caroline. She deserved the same amounts of love interested throughout the show. Her beauty deserved to be validated as well.
The writers truly hated Kat Graham and it's so hilariously obvious. I'll never get over the fact that nearly all of the male cast members (and some of the girls) wanted to be Bonnie's love interest at some point and the writers said no. You could tell they hated the fact that Kat was so desired so they took it out on her character.
I don’t mean to be mean, but I never found Caroline beautiful or interesting. The only romance i liked her in was with Tyler. Even when she became a vampire it was a little boring. All her other relationships felt forced. It was said that the main writer identified with Caroline as a blonde and that’s why she got so many love interests even tho she wasn’t particularly interesting. I hear the audience was BEGGING for a Damon Bonnie relationship. Their chemistry was off the charts both on screen and off. But the writers hated on that girl so badly and were openly hostile with her in interviews.
It really gives "Even when you're talented and supportive and beautiful, it's not good enough (if you're biracial/black)." Is it a CW show? Because I find the CW largely, let's say, sus. I think it's creation was the reason UPN was made defunct, which resulted in a ton of funny and meaningful black TV shows getting canceled. They started off wrong as a channel, so I'm not surprised by their behavior. Isn't it funny how the WB-styled shows (white-centric) continued while all the black ones got canceled when they made the CW? It's not, but it's notable.
bonnie was objectively the prettiest girl and also the most powerful/influential character. the fact that she got sidelined like that is insane to me. there should’ve been an arc that along with learning how to wield her powers she also becomes confident and has goals of her own and stops being meek and a pushover to her idiot friends.
Yeahhh. It was always sus to me how it was always with the black friends that they knew that friendships could be platonic and remain that way. Meanwhile, the MCs are dating everything that walks by.
Can you provide some recs? I want to start consuming more media that doesn’t make it obvious that they dislike my race and skin color as a black woman lol
Another example of this is Valerie and Danny from Danny Phantom even though I would argue they we're a way more interesting pairing than the main couple.
This one will always make me salty. Valerie as the love interest was inherently so much more interesting, AND she had a ton more chemistry with Danny. Yet it was abruptly dropped for the cliche, boring, obligatory "main guy/main girl" pairing
YES. Sam Manson was so preachy and annoying why did he HAVE to end up with her??? My headcanon is that they broke up n that Danny and Valerie meet again in college
That scene where they have Sheldon speak Hindi (the indian language) and have Raj not know his own language was SO BAD it became good! Sheldon’s pronunciation was OUTRAGEOUS 🤣 I like to believe that’s the real reason why Raj didn’t understand him
Victorious, Henry Danger, and Vampire Diaries made me so mad! The most obvious and healthiest relationship options were always right there! Literally right there! And don't get me started on Boy Meets World! Angela deserved better!
Lisa Turtle from Saved By The Bell is another one, and I never understood that because she was stylish and beautiful and her personality really developed over time, and she clearly wanted a love interest. Her and Zach were supposed to get together but after one episode where they kissed, the relationship was never brought up again. Apparently, the audience did not want to see them together.
I can understand that. Bro code. Zack was a scummy guy, no one doubts that but having take the woman his friend Screech loved since childhood would’ve been too much. No Lisa didn’t owe Screech a thing but he did love her and Zack coming in to swoop her up when he can get any girl would’ve just seen too cruel
Sadly NBC in the late 80's / early 90's was watched by a LOT of prejudice people. An NBC show that kind of gets it right is City Guys. Ironically made by the same guy who made Saved by the Bell.
It was the 80s. Studio execs wouldn't even allow Arnold Schwarzenegger, the biggest movie star on the planet at the time, to have a black love interest in one of his films (though he fought for it). Truly a scummy time indeed.
I know it's a cartoon but Hey Arnold handled this trope well. Gerald was the cool friend, had an asian love interest(this isn’t putting her on a pedestal; but even today that combo is rare) , was the main characters best friend, but he never was beneath him. Craig Bartlett the Goat bro
It’s not that rare, it’s actually the fastest growing group pairing (usually AWBM). Plus it’s NYC? That pairing makes total sense given that the two largest minority groups (aside from Latinos who are the actual largest group but notably absent in the children) in NYC. So it’s in line with reality! We love to see it!
Most of the guys on the TVD cast wanted to be paired with Bonnie but we all know that demon Julie Plec would never let that happen. Instead she gets desexualised and stuck with garbage love interests that no one cares about.
before even fully watching the video, I would like to express that the second my 14 year old self laid eyes on Andre in Victorious I was head over heels and I was so ready for when he and Tori would eventually date. I did **not** understand the obsession over Beck and was disappointed Andre never got a more substantial romance
I felt this way too. The pedestal they put Beck on had me so confused as a boy lol. If I’d have known how much girls like guys like Andre irl I would have learned to be myself soooo long ago.
Bonnie an Damon didn’t date because the main producer was racist as to why they kept trying to kill her off. But each time they killed her off, the ratings would drop. Ian (Damon) also threatened to leave if they did it again. The actors that played Damon an Bonnie did want to become a couple in the show but the producers turned the idea down.
I don't know if anybody remembers the show "Twisted" but they did the same thing. The leading man (Avan Jogia) had been in love with the black female lead (Kylie Bunbury) since childhood. They put them together. The chemistry was insane and the fans loved it. Then they suddenly made him "in love" with the white female lead (Maddie Hanson) even though she had another man (Ashton Moio) who loved her since childhood as a recurring star. It was crazy. His character had been jailed and he said that it was thinking about her (Kylie) that got him through it and his ability to come back to her, only to do that stupid flip and the new pairing had no chemistry whatsoever. The show fell apart and was canceled immediately - the fans hated it. Avan moved on to do the TV movie "Tut" and he had Kylie come and play his love interest there instead.
I was hoping somebody was gonna post this. I saw this in real time. We all thought Jo was gonna be his love interest until he started flirting with Lacey. Everybody was like hold up!! The kiss between him & Lacey sealed it. Them white girls was mad. Avan was team Dacey. It all went down hill because the original writer left the show and was replaced by a writer whom was known to not be a supporter of POC characters. That's why S1A is different from S1B. Next thing you know, they break up, he gets with Jo and now Lacey is making out with a chick. They were posting racist stuff on the Facebook page. The white fans told the black fans, if they didn't like the show, stop watching. So they did. The viewership plummeted so fast, they started begging folks to come back. It didn't work. All this stuff is documented on Tumblr. We dacey fans got TUT.
I remember watching that episode made me mad. I was like you promoted this whole thing only for it to be a dream. I never been so mad at Nickelodeon in my life.
I remember being so confused why Tori and Andre didn’t end up dating because jade was with beck and cat was with Robbie. Even Andre and jade made sense to me because even I fell in love with jade when she sang that song 💀💀
For the guys, they’re running afoul of the Two Strike Rule. When the main white characters have any sort of disadvantage, their POC friends have two. The guys in Revenge of the Nerds are nerds, but their black friend is a *gay* nerd. Malcolm is an awkward genius, but his best friend is an awkward genius in a wheelchair. The guys in TBBT are unlucky with women (despite Leonard’s conquests), but Raj can’t even *talk* to women for half the show. Even worse, Raj has all the elements for a ladies man - he’s a metrosexual so he should look and dress better than the guys by default, he’s rich, he’s been on magazine covers and tv so a minor celeb, only one with his own place and has a nice car. Yet he’s less successful with women than a 90-lb short guy that lives with his mother, a short chubby guy with epic mother issues and an intolerable roommate, and an asexual man on the spectrum?
They’re trying to sell the narrative that Asians, and darker skinned Indian men specifically are SO “lesser than” that even having money can’t “save” them which is ridiculous, especially in this economy 😂
On this is us the only gay people who are major in the show are related to the only Black triplet. Like honestly I think making Kevin bi would’ve been interesting considering he was always trying to be masculine for his dad, but I guess only Black people can be gay in this is us.
As soon as I saw the title I immediately thought about “Saved by the Bell” Lisa was never in any serious relationship. Even Screech had Violet for a while as a love interest. Zack and Lisa dated for only one episode. That storyline went nowhere. And was never addressed. Crazy thing is “Zack and Lisa” dating/engaged in real life.
Lisa also dated Slater for an episode (summer beach season). Lisa was on that show for its entire run (not including “College Years”) and she couldn’t have one steady boyfriend? Lisa and Kelly seemed like the ones who would have had steady boyfriends.
This is what I was going to say. This stuff goes back so far. I was pissed Zach didn't end up with Lisa in real life. Their chemistry was so good! That's because they were together for 3 years in real life. The sad part is ....the producers did want to pursue the relationship but the fans didn't. Fans were pissed because they only wanted Zach with Kelly. I remember reading about that. I don't think people realize how many times it's the fans dictating this racist crap. They threaten and send nasty letters because they are uncomfortable with their favorites paired with black costars.
@@lisacox5405 Typical yt fandom ish. How dare our "yt" lead be with someone who doesn't look like us. If he's with a black it's unattainable! (cause you know they switch to racism RL quick).
Yep this always annoyed me growing up as well. The black characters are either stereotyped or just background characters. Black characters are usually never allowed to date or have any interesting plot lines. We are just the butt of the jokes, the comic relief & their to fill a quota which is sad. We have a lot of work to do
Here is a little secret if you want these white supremacists to notice and include you,get power and resources and compete then they will include you by default
I guess, but I like the idea of them just being friends more. not every female and male have to date. They were good friends, and I'm glad they stayed that way :)
Its ao true. If andre was a blonde, blue eyed white man he 100% wouldve gotten with tori by the end of the 1st season. Instead he was basically a eunuch.
Honestly that’s crazy because Mercedes was the only tolerable person on the show and by far the most talented and she did not go unnoticed . I’d date her 100x over the others
Amber Riley (Mercedes) also won an Olivia (a British Tony) and was classically trained opera singer before Glee. But she was always playing second fiddle to Lea Michele (Rachel). It makes my eye twitch
As a white girl I thought when I was younger that André and Tori or Charlotte and Henry not dating was a form of showing that platonic friendships between men and women or girls and guys was possible and very real. I was always scared at the thought of not being valued as a friend but rather simply a love interest and that my value as a human being is lower because I'm a girl. Turns out that's not true and it's just racism and sexism, yay. The only thing I can say about that is that both of these tropes are something we'll fully leave in the past.
As a black South African girl, I got over it. I now champion relationships between Asians and black people like Osha x Qimir in The Acolyte currently developing. Amber x Mark were a breath of fresh air because we didn't see a lot of Blasian couples before that actually kissed. I LOVED Marie and Jordan from Gen V and Anissa and Grace Choi from Black Lightning. Romeo Must Die with Jet Li and Aaliyaah removed their kiss scene. And definitely hold a candle to Ninja Assassin starring Rain and Naomi Harris. White + black pairings I am over it already
but your fear is valid. actually, those shows probably made a lot of girls be less aware of how boys (and grown men) ca be assholes, with the whole "frendzone" culture always making us feel like men always want to date/have sex with you and never just be your friend
I think showing Tori and Andre get together would be fine as long as they developed his friendships with Jade and Cat better, still showing how men and women can have solid platonic relationships!
Andre and Tori should have been together. I never understood why the show paired Tori and Beck so much when Beck was with Jade. Not to mention Beck could be pretty toxic ngl
I was always pissed at Saved By The Bell for the exact same reason ! Lisa Turtle (played by Lark Voorhies) always had such amazing chemistry with the main character, Zack Morris (played by Mark-Paul Gosselaar), and they never made the two of them happen ! Even though they had great reason to, both in the show and off (the actors dated for a long time during the course of SBTB) and one episode even set the characters up to be dating at the end... but the pairing was never heard of again in the next episodes ? I remember being so mad about it !
This trope is so harmful. Like imagine growing up as a poc and seeing the once character being left out. Makes you seem not good enough like yts. Also Robbie’s is literally a need that no one likes but he still gets a girl over Andre?!! Yk they dragged it out. Also Andre most datable out the men sigh. Jade was only nice Andre which kinda surpise me bc she’s mean to everyone omg
I'm hurt by it now and I'm no longer a teen 😭😭 the pain never goes away until you realize those images don't define you. Even then it's hard to get there, it's like everyone is constantly telling you how undesirable you are.
This still irks me even today. They put so much effort into planting the seeds for Robbie and Cat, yet Andre only had the "random gf storylines" which were simply one-and-dones. Andre could have had some truly great romantic storylines with either Tori or Jade, but we can't have nice things.
I wanted Andre and Jade to get together so bad after the episode where he falls for her. He made Jade open up and show a different side of herself. It seemed like he would be really good for her. But instead she stays in her clearly toxic relationship with Beck. That was SO annoying.
@@rachelmartin5187 I think it's a mixture of the trope discused in this video and him being portrayed as being in touch with his femininity when the writers are misogynistic at points
They’re trying to do this to my girl Sydney in The Bear now! 😢 It’s so blatant how her chemistry with Carmy “has” to be platonic you know if her actress was white this wouldn’t even be a discussion.
i keep seeing people be like "why cant men and women just be friends!!!! we need platonic representation!!!" like hes making goo-goo eyes at her constantly dont piss me off
I feel like the POC is frequently an afterthought in both writing and casting, that them being included in a relationship with a main yt lead is deemed far fetched. Doubly so for older shows! As a kid, I was just so happy to have a token black character at all.
Great video! I've noticed this for decades, and it still persists to this day. It's a miracle that Rick and Michonne are actually ENDGAME, with their own spinoff in The Walking Dead. Another example of an undateable Black character would be Nicole Beharie in Sleepy Hollow. They actually killed off her character, rather than have her date the white main man, Ichabod. Their chemistry was palpable.
Yeah, Sleepy Hollow pissed me off. Nobody cared about Ichabod's wife(whatever her name was). It made me stop watching the show when they gave the wife so much focus.
in the new Star Wars Rey should’ve been with Finn they teased it the whole time then just threw him a random love interest cause poc can’t be a love interest for a main protagonist 😑🙄
@@kingmuizz708Not to say I don't think international reactions played a part, but I think it's weird to place the blame on China when this video just gave us multiple examples of this trope in very localized media... Racists americans are still to blame here

No not really it was clear that her romance was always gonna be Kylo because they parallel he is a child of a hero she is a child of a villain That the mist classic romance in all of fiction
i'm a sucker for friendships, like i love when we get great friendships in shows, same or opposite gender, but like, it's such an undeniable racist pattern with black and poc characters,it's undeniable. obviously it's not every piece of media ever, but you can't unsee it once you realize it, it's way too much, and it's still happening
It’s why it bothers me to consume western media atp cause it’s really insane how blatant it is. Sure men and women can be friends, but this seems to only apply the minute a POC is a potential romantic interest. It’s annoying.
I will say Victorious was groundbreaking in the sense that Beck is South Asian and he was the leading love interest for two characters. That’s something you just didn’t see in the early 2000s. They never mention Beck’s heritage, but the actor is half Indian and when I figured that out, I was shocked to see someone like myself on tv that wasn’t a negative stereotype. It’s really unfortunate that they dropped the ball with Andre, I really thought him and Tori had chemistry. This just brings colourism into the debate, I think.
Even cartoons will do this. Winx Club did the only black fairy Aisha/Layla so dirty. She was the last one to get a love interest. It happened in season 3 in the last few episodes, but that's understandable, as she was only introduced in S2. And in the very next season, they literally k*ll him off!! His name was Nabu....and now that I think about it he was the only POC that was a love interest for any of the main fairies (Helia is possibly East Asian coded, but then again they still k*lled off the only darker-skinned love interest). He literally doesn't even last a full season. It's so crazy. What makes matters worse is the dubs that I watched AND when I watched the season in its original language the earth fairy Morgana said that he was asleep and they would watch over his body until he woke up, but when Nickelodeon got the rights and continued with season 5 they officially k*ll him off. They had the perfect chance to bring him back alive, but no they bring back Blooms' sister instead (which was amazing in itself, but I'm still frustrated because that season dealt with Aisha/Layla's family tribulations, heck her cousin was the main villain!) I know I'm now an adult and I shouldn't take this so seriously, but I'm only passionate about this situation because people have died and come back to life many times on this show so how come he couldn't?!?!?! I also hate the fact that some people in the fandom wanted her to stay single because apparently, not every fairy needs to be in a relationship...whatever the hell that means. In the end, she ends up pairing with a guy named Nex with terrible sideburns, but the chemistry isn't the same as her with Nabu! Nabu was ready to marry her! Nickelodeon MUST do time for the decision to keep him dead and to ask her to be his "forever girlfriend"🙄
THANK YOU for mentioning Bonnie and Damon! I’m still not over that. I’ve watched plenty of shows with couples I didn’t agree with but them not being endgame still Irks me.
sadly i feel like winston from New Girl kinda fell into the “undateable” trope. dating and relationships is a pretty big part of the show and every main cast member has at least one big relationship before meeting their future spouse, but winston doesn’t really date until he suddenly gets married to aly. and almost every girl he dates in the show is black. almost all of nick, jess and schmidt’s love interests are important, recurring characters with real plot lines. but winston has the fewest love interests and most of them are one off characters that are played for laughs.
I love that show but the way they handle race makes me uncomfortable. Why are coach, Winston and Winston’s sister all pro basketball players. Why not have him be an accountant or a store clerk? Lol
Definitely feels like they got a black writer in the room around S3/S4 and actually made Winston a real character and not just a token. Personally dont mind the Ally/Winston relationship. They got a lot of screen time in the final season honestly to make up for the slightly lacking development. But yea, Winston was always sort of sidelined. Funny because Coach wasn't at all. But thats likely because him being part of the Wayan's dynasty sort of demanded they not ignore him.
This reminds me of bridgerton. The racism within the fandom is insane! I love season 2 and the reason it caught ny interest is cause Kate is a dark skinned indian. I have never seen one, especially a woman, on my screen. Its beautiful. But there is a whole issue of racism in the show and fandom
I’ve always felt this hunch when watching many shows/sitcoms/movies, and felt it super strong in Star Wars the force awakens… it’s like humanity evolves in many ways and stays the same in others
As much as I love when relationships can remain platonic among characters, since a lot of romantic relationships end up seeming forced anyway, the way production keeps dating mostly within the same races or separated into white and POC has always been a pet peeve of mine. Especially when you hear all the bs some of the cast of these shows/movies had to put up with just to remain in the show with the rest of their peers, it seems the motivations were hardly ever character/plot based, but centered on favoritism, racism, and belittlement.
Like, personally I'd love to see more shows genuinely consider chemistry and development rather than throwing characters together like dolls... but when you're already doing that, it really makes it clear when there's one character you're leaving alone
Agreed. That movie low key freaked me as a kid BUT I'm so glad that I came during a time when kids shows were still made with depth. Kids programming today is so empty/low stakes
The part about Love Island is so real. The black men/women are so frequently used as game pieces for other people to stay on the island. Otherwise they're paired off whether they want to or not. Also, hate to say it but it seems like half of the black men/women on the show arent even into black men/women 😅
I remember growing up watching reruns of Saved by the Bell and noticing this with Lisa. Her and Zach had great chemistry. There was that ONE episode where they kissed but it was never spoken of again.... It left a very strong impression.....
tiana and nanami was a random crack ship that a lot of people liked online, but sooo many people hated it because they couldnt imagine a black woman being desired by their fave husbando, i saw ppl say that nanami would rather be with prince naveen- so even in head cannon conversations, black people are always seen as the undatables
One of the most famous/infamous cases of the disposable Black girlfriend was Charlie (Aisha Tyler) on "Friends". She dated Ross for a brief time, only as a placeholder for Ross to eventually get back with Rachel.
That’s ironically been Aisha’s biggest problem in Hollywood. She’s usually typecast as the random black girl thrown into a random white show to be a placeholder until the proper white female love interest shows up
It was the guy who played Ross (David Schwimmer) who fought on that show forever for them to add black "Friends" into the group and they never wanted to. When he finally dated a black woman I don't even know if she did four solid episodes, then she was gone. It is so disheartening. Even though rumor has it the show was actually a copycat of the show "Living Single" with an all-black cast.
Growing up as a black kid, i felt like interracial dating wasn’t a big deal in real life, but it was weirdly super absent in tv. But I can see why now, because people unreasonably feel like interracial tv relationships are being “shoved down their throats”. I’ve seen various groups make that comment, but the most common seems to be white people.
Because most white people don’t desire interacial relationships, I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with interacial relationships, but just pointing out the obvious, most people date within their ingroup. Would be kind of pointless to represent something only one side wants to see, it should be mutual right? Otherwise it’s just pandering imo
@@PossibleBat Interracial relationships aren’t only white people & another race. There are other pairings that are possible that people want to see. It’s not all about white people
@@PossibleBat “only one side wants to see” 😭 I don’t think anyone WANTS to see interracial relationships, but people typically don’t have as much of a problem with it as comments would make it seem. @@PossibleBatI’m in an interracial relationship and they are very common in real life, especially in diverse communities. I think you’re projecting your own views on all white people….
No because I noticed that on victorious and it started making me realize how racist Nickelodeon shows are. I was too young for when Nick was Black but I do remember when Disney was Black so I felt closer to Disney. Other examples I wanted to put out are phineas and ferb, how Bajeet was considered the ugly one when phineas was a literal triangle. GMW also had a Black guy in the last season and he was never even considered in the love square. Along with the show disrespecting Angela. Saved by the bell actually had people protest the show for having the main guy (who was wasian) kiss a Black girl (who he was dating in real life). Something I want to bring up is the “unkissible Black love interest” especially in the kids shows. So something I have noticed is a character will have a Black love interest but they won’t kiss on screen. Miley Stewart was kissing up a storm on Hannah Montana but never got past hello with Corbin bleu’s character. Jackson dated a Black girl in the first season and sneezed in her face before kissing her. In liv and Maddie Maddie is able to kiss her TWO love interest multiple times but liv isn’t allowed to even date Holden for more than an episode. In Austin and ally, the Black girl was introduced as not having good breath. Zach and Cody were kissing people out of the womb in that show with girls of all nationalities and yet Black girls are missing. Thats so raven and don’t look under the bed are rare because those are the few childhood media that allowed Black people to kiss on screen.
Andre would’ve been the perfect love interest for every main girl. Tori and Andre would be such a healthy relationship for kids, he’d help Jade be less toxic/worrisome, would help Cat be more mature, and could’ve given Trina the spotlight she deserves
I imagine André and Cat more like siblings.
Tori and Jade though. That could’ve worked I think. Certainly would’ve been better than Beck and Jade.
Even in monster High gen 3 they turned clawdeen into a lesbian. Which is fine but I've noticed a pattern of this.
Yes yes and yes
as a black girl, i was never taken seriously whenever i had a crush on someone of a different race. i got laughed at. it was treated as a joke. i feel like that's what some of these shows are doing. they don't take interracial couples seriously
Literally like we’re not allowed to ever be seen outside of just being the friend
It wasnt until years later that i realized Andre and Tori never got together. My family dropped cable during season 2 so I didn't see half of it and just assumed it would inevitably happen. Implicit bias is wild
Not “implicit bias “it’s😊 pure racism
Also the show was dropped before getting an actual finale
I didn’t watch the video yet but
1.) the writers confirmed they were gonna put Tori and Andre together before the show got cancelled.
It’s crazy!

The actors Jace Norman (Henry) and Riele Downs (Charlotte) are also a year apart with Riele currently being 23 and Jace being 24.
Most ppl are saying that instead of sticking black people in and going completely against character design in the name of "diversity" they should be making more stories featuring black people. Bonnie and Damon not ending together after spending so much time in that weird dimension was really disappointing 😔
Yeah and what annoyed me the most is that the only reason for them not to be together is that Bonnie wouldn’t date a vampire only for to end up with Enzo😂
Even worse, the actors for them wanted Bonnie and Damon to get together and they do in the books😂
And they had the perfect plot to do it in in season 6, Elena losing her memory was stupid but that was a very easy way to get Damon and Bonnie together. All of that combined with the fact that Elena is gone after season 6 anyway is why they should’ve gotten together. But Bonnie was made to suffer😂😂

Right. And it's not even portrayed like "oh Syd just deserves better" its like that connection was never there at all
I think when I first saw the show I wanted it to be romantic, but I kept watching and the writing is great, and their relationship is so written so well that I figured it could go either way and I'd be happy---BUT IS THAT NOT LITERALLY THE CONCEPT OF A WELL WRITTEN 'WILL THEY/WONT THEY' ROMANCE???? The fact that I can feasibly see them as friends and partners for life is a tool that other shows (Law and Order SVU comes to mind) use to support a slow burn romance. I am not surprised they are throwing their amazing romantic potential away and I do think it's because Ayo is a black actress. If a white actress gave that much chemistry it would not be a second thought that they'd take advantage of it and put a romance on screen. I'm upset cause they'd be hot together mainly tbh

Let’s be honest…Bonnie was the prettiest in that friend group. I said what I said.
This is very prevalent (looking at your nEw Girl) and really should be subverted more

The crazy thing about this is that they were dating in real life during the airing of the show; for like three years or something.
Sadly NBC in the late 80's / early 90's was watched by a LOT of prejudice people. An NBC show that kind of gets it right is City Guys. Ironically made by the same guy who made Saved by the Bell.

In shows, movies, dating shows. It’s all over media. And newsflash it affects our dating life in real life too. Especially in the age of social media.

Andre and Tori should have been together. I never understood why the show paired Tori and Beck so much when Beck was with Jade. Not to mention Beck could be pretty toxic ngl

@@kimberleywilliams7802 & then people tell you we live in a post racial society when the messaging is just about everywhere
@@zhaystyle Like, we're not stupid. We see how they don't want to/barely cast black women in anything much less as romantic leads.
I wanted Andre and Jade to get together so bad after the episode where he falls for her. He made Jade open up and show a different side of herself. It seemed like he would be really good for her. But instead she stays in her clearly toxic relationship with Beck. That was SO annoying.
The fact that Raj would be a far better partner than the original Howard and Sheldon, and maybe even Leonard when he was so simp like
Raj just couldn’t speak to women cause if social anxiety. It wasn’t like he was an active creep or cruel to them like Sheldon and Howard could be
@@Linklex7 That's what I'm saying
What sucks I'd that Raj had the most character development out of EVERYONE on the show, yet the writers wouldn't let him have a stable relationship.
Exactly!
Mf exactly like I can see though all that platonic bs
right I’m so angry about this
i keep seeing people be like "why cant men and women just be friends!!!! we need platonic representation!!!" like hes making goo-goo eyes at her constantly dont piss me off
BRO!!!
That's because China wouldn't like it as much (or at least that's what some have theorised based on how dirty they did my boy Finn)
@@kingmuizz708Not to say I don't think international reactions played a part, but I think it's weird to place the blame on China when this video just gave us multiple examples of this trope in very localized media... Racists americans are still to blame here
@@jahleel0077 oh for sure but when your lead (or one of) actor is reduced in size of a poster to appeal to an audience then there's definitely issues (for context, Finn and by proxy John Boyega was reduced in size on the poster of one of the movies in the Chinese press release iirc)
No not really it was clear that her romance was always gonna be Kylo because they parallel he is a child of a hero she is a child of a villain
That the mist classic romance in all of fiction
@@EmperorDxD Sure, dude.
i'm a sucker for friendships, like i love when we get great friendships in shows, same or opposite gender, but like, it's such an undeniable racist pattern with black and poc characters,it's undeniable. obviously it's not every piece of media ever, but you can't unsee it once you realize it, it's way too much, and it's still happening
Isn’t he half Egyptian? I feel like I remember them saying he was half Egyptian
@@BabyGirlTiny he's half indian
You’re right 😔
I love that show but the way they handle race makes me uncomfortable.
@@Ray03595and because he’s a more “passing” black man
Neither Coach nor Winston really got to date did they? I think Coach got with CeCe for an episode but then they broke.
The black girl placeholder thing makes me stop watching a show so fast
No ur absolutely right. I’ll move onto the next thing so quickly
Which is crazy because the entire show was created by a black woman
As one of the many children scarred by "Don't Look Under the Bed", it's hilarious they were more concerned about an interracial kiss.
@@AnnaB22 Absolutely!
"Living Single" was the original, Black,
"Friends""
Growing up as a black kid, i felt like interracial dating wasn’t a big deal in real life, but it was weirdly super absent in tv. But I can see why now, because people unreasonably feel like interracial tv relationships are being “shoved down their throats”. I’ve seen various groups make that comment, but the most common seems to be white people.
True interracial weren’t very common in media or real life until
nowadays
Honestly, for every 1 person that feels interracial relationships are being shoved down there throats, there’s probably 1000 other people that genuinely don’t care
@@PossibleBatI’m in an interracial relationship and they are very common in real life, especially in diverse communities. I think you’re projecting your own views on all white people….
This is how I felt with Harry x uma from descendants they had so much chemistry it just didnt make sense that’s they weren’t together! 😤
OMGGG
THAT'S WHAT I'M SAYINGGGG
FRR 😭
Just coz they had chemistry, doesn't mean they should've ended up together. What if the whole plot was to keep things platonic?
Wow i never noticed this, thank you for bringing it up
This is one thing I like about Shonda's work (Grey's Anatomy, Private Practice {to a lesser extent, it had a LOT of issues}, Bridgerton)
