The best part of this movie is that the Norwegian gunman in the beginning says, 'That is not a dog, it is a thing!' He literally gives away the entire story of the movie - but only if you understand Norwegian.

The Dog/Alien at the start of the movie his name is Jed. Jed is half Wolf/half Husky. He is my all time favorite Animal Actor. Jed's best movies are "The Journey of Natty Gann"(1985). Jed helps a young girl cross America in the 1930s. "White Fang"(1991) The story of a wild Wolf/Dog. Both are beautiful films and a must if you like Wolf/Dogs. Jed lived to be 18. He lived the last 5 years of his life running free on a Northern California Ranch.

John Carpenter's version is closer to the original story ("Who Goes There?") by John W. Campbell, which was written in the 1930s. Kurt Russell was genuine kick-ass in this movie. Great cast and suspenseful storyline. The practical effects by Rob Bottin were amazing. I saw this movie when it debuted in 1982. I once owned a Siberian Husky that I named, "Klondike." Every person I have ever shown this movie to I introduced to it blind with no mention of what the plot was about and they are ALWAYS super into the dog at the beginning... Until they aren't.
It's hilarious watching them go through the motions because the moment the dog enters the pen with the other dogs and just STANDS there, THAT is the moment where my friends always start to suspect something isn't right with it only to be quickly and BRUTALLY confirmed mere seconds later upon transformation.
I think my favorite experience was me having 3 of my besties sat down and they were all talking over the film, no f***s given and were largely not interested beyond the occasional appearance of the dog. They all quieted down when the dog was brought to the kennel though and I burst out laughing when the room was suddenly filmed with everyone shouting some variation of "WHAT THE F***".

I saw this as a child(11 or 12), and thought it was great at the time, I can't remember if I saw it on video or in the theater, but it was horror that I didn't mind. I guess because of the sci-fi angle, as I was never in to slasher films, and yeah, the practical effects in this film are top shelf, and this film deserves the praise it gets.

Perhaps the film I like the most. The suspense, coupled with the visual effects of Rob Bottin made it incredible. It seems to me that while Norris may not have been among the more prominent characters, his transformation in the defibrillator scene made him an iconic feature in cinema. The late Charles Hallahan was often asked about it, apparently.

@redjones8010 - a lot of Carpenter's movies had some crazy scenes, or dialog, and of course great music (which most of the time, Carpenter wrote himself).
Now, she should watch his other classic movies (John Carpenter), such as:
      - The Fog (original one from 1980)
      - Escape from NY
      - Prince of Darkness
      - They Live (must watch)
      - Big Trouble in Little China
Each one is quite different from the other.

John Carpenter movies are must watch! From comedy, to live, to sci-fi to horror. Big trouble in little CHINA, Starman, escape from New York, escape from LA, assault on precinct 13(the original), are musts. The thing is one of the three most important sci-fi movies made, along with Alien and Bladerunner. What was done here, for story and special effects was way ahead of it's time. Also carpenter is a master at minimalist creepy theme music! The dog trainer should have won an Oscar! The special effects guy should have won an Oscar! He was a 21 year old college student 😮😮😮

This is one of my absolute favorite books. I've read dozens of times. This version of the movie is the best one. However, they still turned it into more of a horror instead of a Sci-Fi. Now that you've seen the original, you need to watch the prequel made in 2011 starring Mary Elizabeth Winstead. It links to this movie perfectly. It's from the perspective of the people at the station where the dog came from. I have to watch those two movies at least once a year.

I love this movie, because the protagonists are intelligent, and make smart decisions and do everything right, and still lose. Also what the guy was saying in the beginning in Norwegian was "Get away from it, it's not a dog. It's a thing pretending to be a dog." He was trying to save them, but they couldn't understand him. Also, the practical effects (prosthetics) in this were done by one person. His name is Rob Bottin, and he's now world-renown for his talent, but he started his career at 14, and was only 22 when he created the monster(s) for this film. He was initially criticized because his work was too gruesome. And you're right, the dog is not a husky, it's a wolf mix. His name was Jed and he lived a very long life (roughly 18 years) and was in several movies. And the set was very cold. It was filmed in the U.S. and Canada, with much of it in Alaska.

Nie wiem czy zwróciłaś uwagę na 2 rzeczy. 1 to muzyka, genialnie budująca klimat niepokoju.

I love Alien, but I revisit The Thing more often. I've watched Alien probably five or six times in my life, while I've watched The Thing more than a dozen. It is one of the best movies about paranoia and suspicion that I've ever seen. Plus there are so many wonderful, tiny little moments that you don't notice the first time through, such as what happened with the keys to the blood storage. When Windows goes into the storage room and sees Bennings being absorbed, you can hear him drop the keys, which he'd gone to get from Garry. While they're all chasing Bennings into the night, either Palmer or Norris would have been able to grab the keys off the floor and take out the blood.

I always enjoy seeing people’s reactions to seeing a movie for the first time, especially this one. The tension and paranoia, such a powerful movie. I actually show this to my students every year, which I know I shouldn’t, but I advertise as the “Among Us” movie, who is sus who is the imposter, and here’s a movie with practical effects.
If you’re up for suggestions, how about a reaction for JAWS or Predator? Oh and definitely watch Aliens, sequel to the original.

    1. The Norwegian killed himself so The Thing couldn't get to him.
    2. The ultimate hand grenade throwing FAIL 🙄🙄
    3. You have to realize that this movie came out long before CGI so there was some very creative practical effects showcased here.
    4. Mac's not a murderer. Clark was attacking him with the scalpel. It was self defense.
    5. Of everything that went down the part that got me the most was when Blair was dragging Gary by the face.
    6. Their fate is left up to the audience. Maybe it's best they all die.
    7. They re-made this sans Carpenter and Russell.
    8. Another Russell/Carpenter product you need to first time/share with us is "Escape from New York".
FWIW, we don't see Childs' breath at the end conversation with Mac.

Loved your reaction to this even though it was not really your cup of tea .
I love this movie it is easily my favourite John Carpenter movie I am amazed at how a movie that was made 41 years ago can have better effects than movies we get today , just shows how much better practical effects are over CGI ( I think CGI has its place but this just shows how much better practical is ) .
Rob Bottin is the genius behind the effects , he ended up sleeping in his effects workshop so he did not waste time travelling , when the film was completed he was hospitalized with exhaustion , that's real dedication I guess .
Not only are the effects amazing the tone and mood are amazing too the sense of claustrophobia , paranoia , and tension is so well done especially when they don't know who is who .
I love Garys rant after his blood is tested the way he starts talking quite softly and ends up raging very funny .
This is actually a remake , the original was made in 1951 and is actually very atmospheric and tense obviously the effects are not up to much the Thing is a Western actor called James Arness in make up so not as imaginative as Bottins creature designs .
There was a prequel made in 2011 which tells what happened in the Norwegian camp it is ok but not a patch on Carpenters .
So in my opinion an amazing film if you can stomach the gross effects .
P.S. if you speak Norwegian the guy at the beginning gives it away what is up with the dog .

2:39 as far as I know deja vu is a experience sensation which can be cause by various factors. The research on this isn't very clear yet, but it seems to be some sort of desyncrony with you temporal lobe, like an echo, a ver close echo so your brain think that you are remembering a memory instead recording what is in your temporal lobe.
Think about it like a "buffer" if you will. When you are copying a file from your computer to an usb pen (for example) first it gets stored from your computer (your senses) to the buffer (temporal lobe) and then from the buffer to your usb pen (your short memory). But the buffer have a glitch and the same file is sent twice with only a few milliseconds of difference, so it looks like you seen it twice. That's why your brain think your are remembering that, because it have it already stored.
I know the analogy isn't very clear, but is not an easy "thing" (pun intended) to explain.

There's SO MANY Theories about the ending, which makes for a PERFECT Ending!
The Movie Crossovers were Alien and Predator... There's even an "Alien vs. Predator" Movie out there... and, of course we're stuck in the middle!

    22:30 "What is deja vu?"
The best way to explain it is to compare it to microphone feedback.
Have you ever used speakers too close to a microphone? Not so close that it makes that high-pitched whine, but close enough that when a sound, like a person talking, comes out of the speakers, the microphone picks it up and runs it through the speakers a second time, making an echo?
Happens to me all the time on zoom meetings when somebody in the meeting is not using headphones but is instead using computer speakers and a microphone - every time anybody but that person speaks, their voice echoes.
That is what happens inside your brain with Deja Vu.
Let's say you are on vacation somewhere new, you've never been here before. You go into a restaurant and talk to the waiter. Suddenly you have deja vu even though you're definitely certain you have never been here or met this person before.
But it's a memory and it SEEMS like it happened before.
What really happened in your brain is that this is the first time it happened.
As it is happening, your brain makes your first, and only, memory of this one new event.
But at the same exact instant, another part of your brain is remembering this one, new memory. in real time.
So your brain is both creating this memory and "viewing" it at the same time, but it thinks it is remembering an old memory instead of viewing the new one being made.
It's like that microphone echo but the echo is in your brain as the new memory is simultaneously being made and being "remembered".
Because your brain cannot tell the difference between an old memory and a new one, you get that deja vu sensation that this has all happened before, even though it didn't.
Luckily, our brain almost never does this (if it did, we'd experience deja vu thousands of times every day).
It's so rare that when it happens, it feels weird and wondrous. Almost magical.
But it's just a feedback echo in our brain.
Nothing really magical about that, I'm afraid.
