So, Blair ran those simulations and learned the thing would take over the entire world in short order. He destroyed the helicopter, the tractor, and the communication equipment so they would be stranded there. He ensured they couldn't leave, and they couldn't call for others to come. He insured the thing would stay there as well.
Love to read your comment! It’s so cool to find out this after watching! I feel like this movie could be analyzed so many different ways too . Thanks for watching!!
Yeah, I thought that was pretty obvious. We don't know exactly when Blair got replaced, but it's certain he was human when they first put him in the shed.
@@_MjG_ I guess nothing in this world is really certain. But his actions certainly don't make any sense if he was the Thing then. It wanted to get to civilization, and destroying the communication equipment is counter to that goal. It also would have been prudent for the Thing to destroy or alter Blair's notes, which clued Fuchs in to what their situation was really like. On the other hand, Blair's actions are perfectly consistent with someone who had just discovered what we saw him discover.
@@_MjG_ We see Blair jump out of the helicopter with the axe after destroying the helicopter. He wanted to keep it from spreading. He is then wrecking the communications room and that is when Childs reports that the machines were wrecked.
22:22 -- Blair destroyed the Tech/Radio Room because he knew at that point none of them could leave the station, for fear of taking the Thing back to civilization and infecting the world. It's why he destroyed the chopper too.
You were literally half right about the dog; he was a wolf-mamalute hybrid. His name was Jed. Sometimes when the wolf-dog cross happens, it removes the genetic defect that makes wolves into cuddle puppies. And that definitely happened with Jed. He really unnerved the cast and crew with his quiet, predatory behaviour. He went on to play White Fang and the wolf in The Journey of Natty Gann.
6:46 The pinball machine is a nerdy bit of foreshadowing that you have to be a pinball fanatic to get. Its called Heat Wave. There's a thermometer on the rear display, the idea of play is to score points to raise the temperature of the thermometer, when it reaches the top, it blows up.
The dog that Clark had been looking after was “The Thing” that attacked the other dogs in the kennel. This is why the Norwegians were trying to kill it at the beginning. Copper is the guy they often call “Doc” since he is their doctor. To make it simple, he’s the guy with the nose ring. As for Fuchs, he was the scientist in the glasses who suggested they prepare their own meals and eat out of cans. They later found him burned to death outside in the snow. I can understand wanted to evacuate, but with one or two of the crew members being the Thing, you might risk letting the infection spread.
@@_MjG_ you are right! Lol oddly enough that’s what confused me! I thought he came in and was growling at one of the dogs in there! Oh well, first time watch through problems lol thanks for watching!!
Why do so many people in these reaction videos think that Blair is The Thing when he starts destroying all of the radio equipment, as well as the helicopter? Do you not hear what Blair is saying as he's smashing everything up? "Do you think that Thing wanted to be an animal? No dog could make it a thousand miles in the cold. No, you don't understand! That thing wanted to be us!"
@@ange1098 People can't talk and listen and be observant and process information all at the same, if you try to do it all at once, you miss information.
There's a common theory that Blair _was_ the Thing the whole time - smashing up the helicopter and the radio equipment was its way of getting access to parts. Why it didn't just steal the chopper - perhaps it had never assimilated anyone who knew how to fly a helicopter, or perhaps it was trying to leave _the planet_ and not just the continent, who's to say? As for what he was saying - well, the Thing could have just been acting, trying to sell the story of why it had destroyed the things it had. That's the thing about this movie - there's no one answer to the question of who did what when. We never know what the Thing is thinking, or even what its ultimate goal is - not for certain. That's what makes it sit with you long after its over.
@@undeadMonk Sorry, but that's hardly a "common theory," and if Blair was the Thing, then he wouldn't have acted the way that he did, which is inconsistent with the behavior of every other person who was the Thing. The fact is that Blair did not become assimilated by The Thing until after the others locked him away in the tool shed. When MacReady and the others go to visit Blair in the tool shed while they are searching for Fuchs, Blair is seen with a rope tied into a noose hanging from the ceiling, and that is the moment when Blair had already been assimilated by the Thing. The first person who had been assimilated by the Thing was Palmer, who was the shadow that is seen in the room the dog enters early in the film. Palmer was the only human other than MacReady who was helicopter-qualified, which is why after the helicopter had been destroyed, the Thing later had to attack Blair and use him to build a small craft to escape using the salvaged parts from the helicopter. The Thing did not need to build a craft that could take it back to outer space, it only needed to get as far as McMurdo Naval Base and from there it could have assimilated anyone and gotten on a boat to the mainland.
At least one of them was the Thing. At that point all it had to do was freeze, then when the rescue party came in the Spring to take the bodes home it could thaw and take over the world. This film along with Prince of Darkness and In the Mouth of Madness are called John Caropenter's apocalypse trilogy because each shows the beginning of the end of the world.
Even though famed composer Ennio Morricone is listed as the composer in the credits, a lot of the music was written and performed by director John Carpenter. The legendary Stan Winston lent a hand with the creature effects.
Yes, Carpenter wasn't really happy with the stuff Morricone delivered, some cues aren't usable for the movie, so Carpenter added his own cues to the movie
The machine that Blair-Thing was building was NOT a spacecraft. More like a hovercraft or rocket sled. Either to get to the ocean so it could assimilate the food chain, or simply far enough away that the humans couldn't follow so it could freeze and await rediscovery again. The guys checking the generator are the only ones alive, apart from Childs. Both Childs and Mac are human in the end. The biggest nail in the coffin of the popular "Childs was a Thing" is that if he was, he wouldn't have confronted Mac at end, there. He would've simply walked off into the cold to freeze, knowing that Mac wouldn't be able to do anything to stop him. And Mac would've just froze there, drinking his J&B, unaware that Childs was out there.
@@daveb947 Yeah, I never believed the breath theory. If The thing could imitate a human perfectly, including the voice and memories, then it sure as heck would also have been warm-blooded and also breathed, so would've also shown its breath in the cold. I have seen people attributing a quote to Carpenter, about Childs lacking breath at the end, but I think that is fake. So many theories/quotes about this film are just nonsense.
BEST SCI FI HORROR FILM EVER MADE! Critics were not too kind to this movie when it was released in 1982, as it was released 2 weeks after ET was in theaters. Critics called it "boring, dull, and a wretched excess," as well being called, "One hell of an antidote for ET." However it's gained a cult following and has been regarded as one of the best Sci-fi Horror Thriller Films ever made, as well as being the best in John Carpenter's filmography. The Dog Kennel Sequence was done by Oscar Winning VFX artist Stan Winston, as Rob Bottin ended up in the hospital for exhaustion and a bleeding ulcer.
I REALLY enjoyed watching this with you, Cami! Anyway, since watching your reactions to this movie has been a total blast, I'm gonna call it a date night for me even though it isn't exactly a date movie. And as far as knowing you, I'm learning more with every show you review. This time I learned you have a Samoyed! Maybe I'll learn something else cool about you next time! On that note, I can't wait until our next time "together" watching a cool flick because this was really fun! I really enjoyed this very much! Great reactions, Cami! Best to you- ❤
McCready blows the creature into a million pieces. Some of those surviving pieces could lie there for thousands of years, in the ice, until they warm up and attach to some living creature. One cell is all that is needed for that creature to survive.
The Blood Test Scene was on Bravo's 100 Scariest Movie Moments. The music score was composed by Ennio Morricone, but part of it was rejected and replaced by John Carpenter's music. Portions of the score can be heard in the Oscar Winning HATEFUL EIGHT soundtrack. The sound effects of The Thing, when it transforms, are that of Bears, Alligators, Snakes, Pigs, Horses and Human screams played backwards or sped up to make it sound otherworldly.
This story has long roots. There's the 50's film and the 1938 novella, which they are based on. That, in turn, may take some influence from H. P. Lovecraft's At the Mountains of Madness, which mentions Edgar Allan Poe's The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket from 1838.
Thank God for smart people. So many literally can only think on a shallow level....think about it logically ....wouldn't it be odd these people trying so desperately to kill 1 dog 😂
You see Wilford Brimley digging around in that alien carcass and you can't help but think, "A warm bowl of Quaker Oats would sure feel comforting right about now."
Interesting reaction mate although I think you missed a lot of the plot. The dog the Norwegians were shooting at & trying to blow up was the Thing & assimilated one of the Americans when it walked into the room & the silhouette (of Palmer?) turned around. The Americans brought the burned body back from the Norwegian camp because they're scientists & scientists do that sort of thing. Blair hadn't gone mad or been assimilated(?) when you saw him smashing up the helicopter & the computers in the camp. He'd already worked out that one or maybe more of his colleagues were probably already Things & if they escaped it would be the end of the world so the camp needed to be isolated. You asked about the doctor (Copper). Well he kinda died when he had both arms bitten off. All this info was up there on screen but you missed it somehow...heyhoe! 😉😊
Yesn't because they dig it out doing this whole mess though i don't blame them i would've done the same but with greater biological safety measures and they tried very hard to fix it
Oh, there's a zillion theories- One of the more prevalent ones is that Childs is a thing in the final scene. There's another one that claims MacReady was the first one infected, and was a thing the whole time. It's also possible that they're both still human- and it's even possible that everybody is right, and they're both things at the end. (When the thing imitates somebody, does it do it so perfectly that another thing couldn't tell the difference?) I think Carpenter dropped clues throughout the movie so that you'd never be sure who got infected when, and who was a thing at the end.
That’s so interesting. I’m wondering if MacReady was the Thing the whole time. ..How did he make it past the blood test? Maybe he rigged it? Also he was always the one killing the Thing , when they found it. So I’m still curious about that theory!
@@Letstunein The flaw in the theory is the blood test. We never see MacReady cut his finger, but it seems unlikely the others would have accepted the result if he hadn't done it where they could see. There are some possible explanations of how he could have rigged the test, but they all leave too big a blank for the audience to fill in without further reveals. The MacReady theory also doesn't explain why he would have secretly made the tape warning any rescue party about the thing, since he was supposedly already infected at that point. As to how he got infected, the theory goes that the thing/dog runs up and immediately tries to lick Clark's face, but only manages to lick his glove. After Clark is wounded, MacReady hands him a liquor bottle, which gets thing cells on it from Clark's glove, and infects MacReady shortly thereafter off camera.
@@AstroXeno oh very interesting! It could be possible like you said , but probably unlikely because of those factors. Also, I think it makes his dialogue at the end a little more satisfying knowing he is not the thing. And worked so hard to kill it. But it’s cool to think about! Thanks for explaining!
I was thinking about this and often reactors will say "why not get outta there" or "why bring it back?". We forget that the type of people to stay out in a facility like this one either researching or supporting... are not going to be the type of people to cut and run or not investigate etc.
30:00 "The art department had a great time with this movie." Well, yeah, in the sense that filmmaking is an art. There's almost no "art" in the sense of painting or graphics here. Every special effect you see was built by hand. Models, prosthetics, and props. That in itself is "art" but they'd rather call it "practical effects".
"Everybody loves animals right?" But in a MONSTER MOVIE, nothing is as it seems... It's interesting, the *first* time I saw this, I put it together that the dog was the monster. I didn't know HOW, I certainly couldn't have anticipated it's horrific metamorphic abilities, but if you see someone acting irrationally in a monster movie, it's because they're either fighting the monster or they ARE the monster. It felt a lot more likely that the dog was an escaped lab animal or something, carrying some kind of contagion or was some sort of shape-shifter; rather than the TWO men, who were working as a team and performing highly technical tasks like flying a helicopter, somehow being zombies or something. What's crazy though, is that that exact scenario was entirely possible. The last uninfected human at the Norwegian station could have put a message in the dog's collar to warn the rest of humanity and sent it on a desperate mission to find the US station in time; and then two humans, both infected by The Thing, are entirely capable of flying helicopters, shooting guns, speaking in Norwegian, and working as a team to hunt it down before it escapes.
People usually get mad when you point that out. I read an article some years ago about this movie in which Carpenter was describing the ending scene. He pointed out that Childs had no breath and that he was amazed how everybody missed that. And then, of course, you got those people who get angry and start going off about John Carpenter "never said that!". People are so emotionally attached to the Childs character for some strange reason.
@@Elsupermayan8870 I actually noticed it the first time I watched it but disregarded it as a 'glitch' in filming. At least it was sort of confirmed elsewhere like you mentioned. I bet when the graphic novels came out those people were really mad when they find out Childs was the Thing when they were 'rescued' by the sub. But many don't consider the graphic novels canon I guess.
@Elsupermayan8870 Bennings has breath when he's been assimilated. The breath thing means nothing whatsoever, it's just the lighting of the scene, which is super obvious
The dog at the beginning was the one wandering around camp. People were alone with it for some time. As soon as it was around a bunch of regular dogs and no humans it split open and tried to infect the other dogs and increase biomass.
Comment 2. This is a remake of a 50s movie, set in alaska. Best actor award goes to the dog. His eerie expressions and subtle vibes gives the trainer huge props. Very few catch before the dog comes out as it were, so really it picked the perfect thing to imitate to infiltrate the camp. Ppl love dogs and would defend it and not suspect it. Even when it acts unnerving. The practical effects is so much more real than cgi, and the abzolute horror on many young ppl raised on cgi proves how much more effective it is. It looks more real bc it is real. Our brains can usually spot cgi, esp up close. Theres a prequel in 2011 also called The Thing, so original!, that shows what happened in the norwegian camp. The cgi inferior to the practical effects here but its worth watching just for the back story
It's either/or, honestly. I mean, the opening title card was just like the '50s film (as a tribute, mind you, since John Carpenter loved the original film), and the tape they're watching is footage from the original film, so it COULD be a remake, but it could also be viewed as a sequel.
Saw a theory video today that Kurt Russell's character is the one who was among first people to turn into thing. And that he used his alcohol bottle passing to others as a way to infect others through infected saliva on tip of the bottles.
John Carpenter himself did say the movie is like how he see the world, who and what to trust in this world. Also, he said something about it's like the diseases, the aides, as no one know who's infected. The Thing is one of the ultimate and classic sci-fi horror that you can't get this kind of genuine unease feeling from the modern sci-fi anymore. The practical effect for this movie back then was indeed amazing, too bad the movie budget were cut off due to these effects, or else we will get to see all of the center staff fate. Fulch supposed to get a small scene before he was killed, same goes to Nauls. There's also a continuation comic, and videogame after this movie as well. Funny enough there's a prequel 2011 film also called "The Thing", it's less impressive due to the CGI usage, but the story isn't so bad.
"If it is not human and they were trying to kill it, just leave it there." Remember, the Norwegians were trying to kill the sled dog (wolf hybrid Thing) too. It is interesting to see the reactions of different people to the dog at the beginning of the movie. So many would have been caught up trying to save and cuddle this dog thing and would have been assimilated easily. When I was a kid, I was thinking that the Norwegians were trying to kill the dog for a reason, so don't trust the dog. Blair was not going crazy, he was reacting like anyone should at that point by trying to protect the rest of humanity and himself from whoever might be one of those Things. Later, he had been assimilated and changed how he acted by wanting to "go back inside" so he would not be alone... LOL. The funny thing is that when he "went crazy" he was already infected since he had touched the pencil to the Thing he was autopsying, then touched the pencil to his face. He had not had enough time to fully assimilate yet since it may have just been a cell or two taking over a few of his cells at a time. The Thing does not want to act crazy once it assimilates someone. It would hide and wait until it is alone with someone to assimilate everyone one at a time until there were no more humans. If someone acts crazy, they are probably not assimilated (or fully assimilated). That is how we know Blair is not the Thing when he goes crazy because he would not want to draw attention to himself if he was the Thing. Clark getting shot by McReady was purely self defense regardless of him being human. He attacked MReady with a scalpel. If you take a scalpel to a gunfight and start something up, you will probably lose in the end. Clark was just being paranoid and not thinking clearly, resulting in his demise.
One of the best horror films ever done and the reason so many fans of monster or creature feature or horror or science fiction think this so amazing is the practical effects always hold up the CGI always ages poorly. Fun watch keep seeking out the classics :)
The way the film goes from slow burn to full throttle in 5 minutes is fantastic. First, they create all these questions with the dog and the remains of the Norwegian camp. Then this scene answers 80% of it. We know why they were trying to kill the dog, and we know why so much of the camp was burnt. The film goes on to explain (indirectly) why the Norwegians destroyed their only means of survival in this frozen landscape.
There is nowhere to evacuate. They are as helpless as Ripley in Nostromo in Alien. There is nowhere to go but that camp. The Antarctic cold is -50°F--100°F with 35-80mph winds.
Every girl watching this freaks out over the dog getting shot at. And then SUPER freaks out when it turns into the monster and attacks the other dogs in the kennel.
Thousands upon thousands of man hours have been spent by fans over the years (pre-internet) trying to figure out who was infected when, who did what when, and if either of the last two were human or not. I'm talking face to face meetings at conventions, hand written letters to to fan magazines and to each other, even going down to the library to do research on this or that topic.
@@Letstunein I don't really know. I suspect that Carpenter didn't know it all in detail, especially if the last two were human or not. I suspect he made the movie so it was vague and teasing enough that fans would spend so all that time obsessing over it. That by itself contributed greatly to it's cult fame over the years.
The dog that the Norwegians were chasing is the dog that transformed into the first creature you saw in the film not counting the dead thing found at the Norwegian camp.
My theory (take it for what it is) is that the Thing isn't one of the aliens who actually crewed the ship, not is it a naturally occurring entity. I mean, can you even imagine what kind of hellscape planet something like that would evolve naturally on? Without becoming the only lifeform on it? No, I think it was either a bioweapon that broke containment, or a science experiment that got out of control, but either way, I think it was something the aliens on the ship were experimenting with, and it attacked them, forcing them to crash the ship on Earth. And maybe one of them got out after the crash and crawled away, only to be frozen out there. The Thing doesn't seem to be sapient or intelligent, at least not enough to be part of a space-faring race, so I don't think it was the pilot or a crewmember. And I agree, I think it was Childs. ALTHOUGH, the Thing can only take on the form of its victim, it can't reproduce anything that's not a naturally occurring part of the body. Like Childs' earring. So...
My FAVORITE Horror movie. I cant think of a worse scenario....intelligent enemy, you dont know if its simply trying to survive or is malicious...hard to detect, can only be killed via fire/acid...and if it gets to transportation or water...its the END OF THE WORLD...NOT just humans. This movie inspired me to get a flamethrower...cause you never know 😂
One of the best science fiction films. I saw it many times in Italy. The profound meaning, the metaphor of this masterpiece by Carpenter, is the paranoia that takes hold of human beings when they see potential dangerous adversaries in their peers and fight against each other instead of being united, all in a closed environment, claustrophobic, even though the outdoor spaces are enormous but uninhabited. There is also another element that must be taken into consideration: our ancestral fear of being infected by our peers or by others. Furthermore, there is another interpretation: in the Permafrost, in the thousand-year-old ice, there are thousands of micro organisms that it is better not to "reawaken" as is unfortunately happening with the global rise in temperatures, because they are extremely dangerous for our health. In short, nature should be respected in any environment. The splendid soundtrack is by Ennio Morricone. Quentin Tarantino declared that he was inspired by Carpenter's "The Thing" when he filmed "The Hateful Eight" and wanted Morricone for the soundtrack at all costs. A couple of curiosities. In reality, there were two Siberian husky dogs trained to play the part of the Thing that Carpenter used. Since digital effects did not exist in 1982, almost everything was created by hand by Rob Bottin and his collaborators. Due to the enormous amount of work and the consequent stress, Bottin ended up in hospital for fifteen days due to a collapse. Greetings from Milan, Italy. P. S. - You are very cute and nice. 🙂🤎🙂
@@LetstuneinOne last thing about the film, hoping you're interested. There are different theories about the final scene. If you notice when Childs and MacReady are left alone it seems that Childs doesn't have any water vapor coming out of his mouth despite the cold and some claim that in reality what MacReady offers Childs to drink is not whiskey but the petrol left over from when they burned everything. If that were the case, Childs would be a Thing, but Carpenter never wanted to make that clear. Personally I believe that they both sacrificed themselves to save the human species and all other life forms on our planet. Ciao 🙂
@@LoSconosciuto57179 thank you for sharing! I’ve been looking up stuff and I still don’t know if I believe Childs Is the thing or not! I definitely feel MacReady is not. I think that’s what I love about the ending! I like your outlook, that they are both human:)
There was a prequel...also called The Thing which explains the opening with who was shooting at the dog and what happened at the other station...Came out about 11-12 years ago...Played as a very good bookend to this.Check it out
The Thing prequel was released in 2011, and is also commonly referred to as "The Thing (2011)", with Carpenter's referred to as "The Thing (1982)" to easily differentiate them. Fun fact about the prequel is that they studied a lot of fan information, and even included some aspects that fans have debated about for decades. Additionally, while said to be purely natural formations, it looks as if there's a Xenomorph head carved out of ice when they're entering the ice cave.

In the final scene, MacReady's breathe is foggy, like it should be in cold weather. However, Childs' breathe is not foggy in the least. Perhaps a subtle hint that Childs became the Thing while "lost in the storm"?
Notice MacReady with his J&B bottle. All it takes is a tiny little drop of the Thing to infect a person. MacReady gives Childs the bottle at the end of the movie and Childs takes a sip.
The fact that Childs didn't hesitate was because Childs knew Mac was human. Childs would only know Mac was human if Childs was the Thing. That's why Mac chuckled. Took me 25 years to realize that.
Perfect ending. Ends very similar to his previous horror film, John Carpenter's Halloween. However, this is much more plausible and more terrifying. There is near no way to beat this Thing. It ended that way because this film is pure distilled Paranoia and distrust. Honestly, its near irrelevant if 1, both or 0 are The Thing, they do not trust eachother, and the audience distrusts 1 or both. You may want to watch this again on your own time and soak it in, remember the characters' names.
All carpenter movies should be watched! Specially Assault on precinct 13, escape from New York, escape from LA, Starman, Big Trouble in little CHINA, they Live, The Fog, Eyes of Laura Mars, Prince of Darkness, and others. Carpenter resented Spielberg for ET AND it took all the money and awards. But Carpenter had the last laugh! Because this movie is much better! Carpenter made his own alien love story with Starman! Carpenter also is the master of the minimalist creepy theme music! Kurt did 4 movies with carpenter! He even did an early TV Elvis movie, for John! This is one of the 3 most important sci-fi movies ever made. Plus Alien and Bladerunner, which are all related, by actors, and some other technicalities. Also the brilliance here is, when the thing busts out, it comes out of u anywhere, any size, shape, etc. The dog trainer should have won an Oscar and the special effects guy should have won an Oscar! He was a twenty one year old college student!😮😮😮. Pro tip, carpenter is still thinking about a sequel! But there's still a massive tie in here with Alien, predator Bladerunner this , and a movie with Kurt Russell called, Soldier! They are related by the beings called Engineers, for Aliens, Terminator, predator, Bladerunner this, and a movie with Kurt Russell movie called, Soldier. Common companies, technology, Replicants, synthetic humans, beings that Engineers created, and even writers and producers! And this is why, prosthetic, robotics, special/ effects, practical effects, are way better than CGI! The three main corporations... Cyberdyne (Terminator) Weyland Corp (alien) and Tyrell Corp (Bladerunner) all did cross work for each other, and also shared some employees!😮 Kurt better have kept the hat! Also the total brilliance here is, once u have been infected, even from just a scratch, u have no idea when u are being taken over! One of the absolute must watch Carpenter films u must watch! Along with Starman, escape from New York, escape from LA, Big Trouble in little CHINA, assault on precinct 13. Go with those, and his Halloween stuff, Eyes of Laura Mars, They Live, The Fog, Christine, In the mouth of madness, prince of darkness, memoirs of an invisible man, vampires! There are critics who say this is Carpenter's version of Communism Socialism, etc , and how it takes over countries, much as a film in the 50s by the same name, i think...
Honestly! I really need to go through some of Carpenters other work! I have only seen a few! This one really stuck with me! Glad I got to watch it on the channel! Thanks for watching!! :)
"How long were you alone with that dog?" "He was growling at it." You still don't realize you were rooting for the plague dog at the start? Are you even watching the movie? "When did Doc die?" Obviously she did not. She summed it up by saying "I'm trying not to watch." I could tell.
I've noticed two universal truths about reaction creators who cover horror films: they always plead for the safety of the runaway "dog" at the start of The Thing. They also always believe the St. Joseph's medallion Father Dyer passes back to Chris MacNeil at the end of The Exorcist is some kind of evil accursed talisman. Reaction creators would never make it in a real horror scenario lol.
1. The Norwegian killed himself so The Thing couldn't get to him. 2. The ultimate hand grenade throwing FAIL 🙄🙄 3. You have to realize that this movie came out long before CGI so there was some very creative practical effects showcased here. 4. Mac's not a murderer. Clark was attacking him with the scalpel. It was self defense. 5. Of everything that went down the part that got me the most was when Blair was dragging Gary by the face. 6. Their fate is left arbitrary on purpose. Maybe it's best they all die. 7. They're re-making this sans Carpenter and Russell. 8. Another Russell/Carpenter product you need to first time/share with us is "Escape from New York".
Two thoughts. First, OMG you're sooo cute, your bf or husband is very lucky. Second, thanks for making the movies take up most of the screen. Very screen.
I've seen so many people react to this movie lately it's insane; my favorite horror movie. Someone put out this theory that MacReady was the first infected and was the Thing the whole time........intersting.
“The Thing” is suspicion, mistrust, and paranoia personified! It is the story of desperate men, isolated and hopelessly trapped in the middle of nowhere, caught up in a terrifying life-and-death battle with an inhuman enemy, in which the fate of the entire world hangs in the balance. What would you do?
Blair wasn't crazy or infected. He was terrified after what he discovered and was desperate to ensure anyone that was assimilated couldn't get to civilization. He said as much while destroying the comms equipment. Did you not understand this?
My wife Stephanie and I love this movie. For it to be 40+ years old and people to still discuss it today shows that the movie can withstand the test of time. There are a lot of theories out there about who was a Thing and when did people get turned. Especially at the end of the move. Most people think that Childs was a Thing because he vanishes a long time at the end and when he appears again, he's wearing different clothing which is because clothes get destroyed during the Thing taking over the person. Here is another view of the movie. I think that MacReady was a Thing. Norris was the first from the American Camp to get taken over, followed by maybe either Palmer or MacReady. Remember they all act as individual beings, the Things do not work together, but a self preservation mode. At the start of the movie we see MacReady playing a Chess game which is a symbolic theme throughout the entire movie. He was a chess player that was always steps ahead of the other players or the computer program. During Chess, in order to win, you have to sacrifice your own men to win the game. When Windows came into the room where Bennings was getting assimilated, he dropped the key (listen for it). It never shows whom got these keys, but I'm going with it being MacReady. This was the keys that also unlocked the blood vault. This is how MacReady's blood didnt scream from the hot copper wire during the test as he used untainted blood from the sabotage blood vault. We never see MacReady cut his finger to put the blood in the dish for the test. We also never see when Blair gets infected, but the last contact was with MacReady. Blair was still a human when they locked him in the shack, but right before MacReady leaves him alone, he takes a swig of Blair's alcohol that was sitting in front of him on the table, thus infecting the drink. Later on they go back to check in on Blair and hes got a noose hanging from the roof. He then says he is alright now but they still leave him out there. The alcohol bottle is gone from the table. From the sight of the noose, he was contemplating suicide and more than likely finished off the bottle to give him "liquid courage" and this is when he gets infected. Fukes also tell's MacReady that he thinks that they should make their own meals and only eat out of cans as it could infect people this way. (Going back to Blair's computer analysis of the Things cells infecting other cells proves this to be correct.) MacReady's response to Fuke's suggestion was creepy as he stands there, paused, as if he underestimated Fukes and is rethinking what to do with this one, then only replies with an "alright..." then walks out of the room. Shortly after the lights go out and Fukes is next seen burnt up dead. Being a "leader" MacRready never shares the information Fukes suggested to him of not sharing food or drink with the group. Then at the end, Childs gets infected when he is handed the alcohol and drinks from it. As soon as he takes a swig, The Thing theme music kicks in and MacReady laughs as if to say Check Mate.
2 comments here so as not to make one long one. A. Its interesting to me how people say you have to run after the first exposure and against an autopsy, but yet they had to understand what they were dealing with otherwise escape meant intriducing that thing to the world, and you read what happens then. Blair before he was the thing got that and tried to keep everyone there, therefore saving the world. 2. Clark wasnt innocent even if he wasnt infected. It wasnt murder, it was self defense. You dont charge someone with a scalpel 2hen they have a cocked loaded gun. Was mac supposed to let him stab him? It always irritates me how many label mac a murderer when if theyd survived, no court would evrn arrest him bc it was a clear case of self defense. Clark got himself killed.
It's always the same. "Noooo! Not the puppy! Don't you dare shoot the doggo!" Then, a few minutes later.... "AAAHHHH!!! Kill it! Kill it!" Jed the Wolf-Dog was EXTREMELY intelligent. He also acted in White Fang and The Journey of Natty Gann. He died in 1995 at the age of 18, a ripe old age for a half Vancouver Island wolf, half Alaskan Malamute.

Welcome to one of the greatest suspense films ever made, and the secret that John Carpenter will likely take to his grave. As recently as this year, he's been adamantly denying theories about whether Childs or MacReady is the Thing. But if you loved this movie, you need to see They Live. Not as creepy or suspenseful, but damn entertaining. And one of the leads is played by Keith David, who played Childs. It's hard for me to pick a favorite between the two. They're both so good.
I would consider this one of the first "buddy movies" with a splash of horror. This Meaning, if this were not a science fiction film, it would be called Lethal Weapon.
I started feeling sorry for her 5 minutes in. This film is sci-fi, but it's straight sci-fi/horror with extra horror. One of the best horror genre films of the late 20th century. The Thing always knows it's the Thing. The dog from the Norwegian camp was the Thing as was the melted bodies they brought back of course.
@@_MjG_ that’s why this movie rocks! It could go so many different ways! Enjoyed reading your comment!

@@goldleader6074 can’t argue with that.
Also, the breath theory for why Childs is the Thing is debunked by Bennings Thing having visible breath.

However it's gained a cult following and has been regarded as one of the best Sci-fi Horror Thriller Films ever made, as well as being the best in John Carpenter's filmography.

"I wonder if there's any theories out there about this movie"
Oh you sweet summer child
Its a testament to the films greatness that its still hotly debated after 42 years.
That’s very true! It’s their job. I didn’t think about that! Thanks for sharing that point!
30:00 "The art department had a great time with this movie."
Well, yeah, in the sense that filmmaking is an art.
There's almost no "art" in the sense of painting or graphics here.
Every special effect you see was built by hand.
Models, prosthetics, and props.
That in itself is "art" but they'd rather call it "practical effects".
"Everybody loves animals right?"
But in a MONSTER MOVIE, nothing is as it seems...
Something to notice is McReady had breath mist while Childs did not at the end.

Jed was a wolfdog, he was just like that. I've heard that he was unnerving as fuck to be around.
@MySerpentine I heard same. Some of those expressions were amazing coming from a dog!
Nah
Funny enough there's a prequel 2011 film also called "The Thing", it's less impressive due to the CGI usage, but the story isn't so bad.
the point of the movie is you cant know how it ends u just have to think about it :)
She is pretty too
"If it is not human and they were trying to kill it, just leave it there." Remember, the Norwegians were trying to kill the sled dog (wolf hybrid Thing) too.
29:48 'ya'll better get outta there'....again, such a cute reaction to one of the most disgusting scenes in the film! You crack me up 🤣
Hehe I’m glad😁
Every girl watching this freaks out over the dog getting shot at. And then SUPER freaks out when it turns into the monster and attacks the other dogs in the kennel.
Thousands upon thousands of man hours have been spent by fans over the years (pre-internet) trying to figure out who was infected when, who did what when, and if either of the last two were human or not. I'm talking face to face meetings at conventions, hand written letters to to fan magazines and to each other, even going down to the library to do research on this or that topic.
Which one of the theories do you think is true?
@@Letstunein I don't really know. I suspect that Carpenter didn't know it all in detail, especially if the last two were human or not. I suspect he made the movie so it was vague and teasing enough that fans would spend so all that time obsessing over it. That by itself contributed greatly to it's cult fame over the years.
The dog that the Norwegians were chasing is the dog that transformed into the first creature you saw in the film not counting the dead thing found at the Norwegian camp.
I always thought it was Child's. He was gone a long time before coming back. 2) the crashed ship seemed awfully big for just one thing to be in it.
So...
It definitely was the new dog that turned into The Thing. The one that was staring at a wall. It was the other dogs that started growling at it.
Nice! I couldn’t figure out why they showed him staring! It made him seem like he was looking at the thing! Glad to read your comment!

I wasn't aware they had Large language model AI back in 1982... by the way! You're a gorgeous lass, Popcorn...
The orig one was in 1951 , then came the John Carpenters version. There is a Part 3 , but that's a pre - version to the 80's version.
Greeting! Thanks for joining me and the nice comment! Enjoyed reading it!!:)
@@Letstunein 🤎 Are you a comic artist? WOW!
@@LoSconosciuto57179 Aw I have done some, but I normally do storyboard and concept art:) thank you!!
I had nightmares growing up in the 90s from this movie, love from Norway
Begining of the movie Kurt Russel rage quit at chess xD
NGL I've done that too.
Lol you didn't even think it was the same dog 😅😅 how !??
Great Reaction Popcorn Roulette 41 Later and This Movie Still Scaring People Today This Movie is A Remake to Howard Hawks 1951 Classic The Thing From Another World John Carpenter Remaked The Movie It was Slammed By Movie Critics But Years Later it Has become Phenomenon among Movie Fans a Movie Fan Favorite In My Opinion Best Horror Movie Thank you Popcorn Roulette Again For watching it.
Aw thanks for joining us!!!
Almost EVERYONE is on the dog's side from the get go... LMAO...until...
Whoever suggested this should have told you to skip the intro. Imagine going into this without the spaceship spoiler.
Beautiful smile
Aw thank you!!
I’m sorry 27,000 HOURS is just over 3 years!
I love your reviews and your humor but why is the video blurred out? I seen this movie so many times theres nothing bad about it.
Probably copyright bullshit
This is my #1 Movie .
In the final scene, MacReady's breathe is foggy, like it should be in cold weather. However, Childs' breathe is not foggy in the least. Perhaps a subtle hint that Childs became the Thing while "lost in the storm"?
EVERYONE ELSE DIED! YOU SAW THEM DIE! lol
Except! They left Child’s behind when they went to test Blair! 😯
Notice MacReady with his J&B bottle. All it takes is a tiny little drop of the Thing to infect a person. MacReady gives Childs the bottle at the end of the movie and Childs takes a sip.
😮 I didn’t think about that!!
Agreed! I definitely wanna watch it again. And take in everything / spot new clues!
Cyberdyne (Terminator) Weyland Corp (alien) and Tyrell Corp (Bladerunner) all did cross work for each other, and also shared some employees!😮
Kurt better have kept the hat!
"Don't shoot that dog!"... every... single... reaction...
Blair destroyed the helicopter the snow tractor and the computers and communications systems to keep everyone there so the thing couldn't escape.
"How long were you alone with that dog?"
"He was growling at it."
You still don't realize you were rooting for the plague dog at the start?
2. The ultimate hand grenade throwing FAIL 🙄🙄
I kinda can't believe all the amazing practical effects were blurred out - that's the whole point of watching the movie.
The best and generally last practical effects movie ever made!
Any time you get Mac and Windows in the same room there are going to be compatibility issues. 😁
Blair wasn't crazy or infected. He was terrified after what he discovered and was desperate to ensure anyone that was assimilated couldn't get to civilization. He said as much while destroying the comms equipment. Did you not understand this?
A true masterpiece (2023.10.27)
It’s great! The music is pretty awesome too!
Classic film
Got any more of them pixels?
John Carpenter's magnus opus. It ruined his career in the 80s. But now at the end it is his crown. Thank you for such a great movie!
It's always the same. "Noooo! Not the puppy! Don't you dare shoot the doggo!" Then, a few minutes later.... "AAAHHHH!!! Kill it! Kill it!"
Jed the Wolf-Dog was EXTREMELY intelligent. He also acted in White Fang and The Journey of Natty Gann. He died in 1995 at the age of 18, a ripe old age for a half Vancouver Island wolf, half Alaskan Malamute.
Norwegian: "Hello!"
American: "How ya doing?"
Norwegian: "This is a civilian scientific research station on a continent with no land based predators larger than a seagull. Why do you have a pistol, a shotgun, and a flamethrower?"
American: "In case of overly agressive penguins. Why do you have an assault rifle and hand grenades?"
Norwegian: "Yeah, those penguins get mean, don't they?"
If someone tries to stab me in the face with a knife I wouldn't consider 'm innocent :P
Lol it’s true! Someone else mentioned that. And it made me feel better about the situation lol
Yeah yeah the Thing a classic but damn she is beautiful.
You think a human could build a flying saucer from spare parts?
Hey! they said it first lol 😂 maybe the Thing can though:)
Blair destroyed anyway they could escape or call for help, he knew that if any of them had contact with the outside world, all of humanity would die
There is a newer Thing movie where a girl is the heroine. Watch The Exorcist, and all the Predator movies.
I started feeling sorry for her 5 minutes in. This film is sci-fi, but it's straight sci-fi/horror with extra horror. One of the best horror genre films of the late 20th century. I think it's a must-watch for film buffs. But it's difficult to get through if someone's isn't comfortable with the genre. And she looked so happy to watch it... Sorry, it's great, but it's dark.
