I was 14 in 1982 and I remember me and my dad went to see this at the theater on a rainy Saturday night. I was blown away then and still is my absolute favorite horror movie.
@@SicKno-i5r That's alright, you don't have to like it. Not everyone has good taste in movies, but maybe you'll get there one day. Don't think it escaped my notice that you're a Carpenter-hater who showed up on a Carpenter movie commentary video just to complain about it. Whether or not you mean what you say, you are without a doubt a shit troll.
I was 12 and my cousin was 13. My mom dropped us off at the movies and we bought tickets to see Rocky 3 which was PG, and walked right into the theater showing The Thing which was rated R so they wouldn't sell us tickets. So glad we did that, it was great, and still one of my all-time favorite movies.
Tremendous replay value. I re-watch The Thing once a year. I tell friends about it who never seen it. Perfect combination of talent, that make an awesome movie
I really need to watch this commentary in full the John Carpenter/Kurt Russel Big Trouble in Little China commentary track is hilarious as well. Appreciate all the interview snippets and highlight reels thanks.
Oh yeah, at one point one of them apologizes for basically talking about Kurt talking about his kids's Sports team. Might have been talking about Wyatt since this was like 20 years ago.
I really admire how in retrospect a movie up on its release, especially back in the 80's, may seem to be a complete failure. However, over time and now with the internet, movies back then can now have a light shined on them and be revealed how misunderstood they were at that time. I'm pretty sure this is John Carpenter's favorite film he ever made.
The only commentary I have ever heard that I enjoyed more than this one was the commentary with these two on big trouble and little China. It’s absolutely hilarious.
My husband and I watched The Thing over the weekend and it has held very well...story, acting & special effects were still awesome. The people tied to the chairs and the blood being tested is still stressful and scary to watch. I love Kurt Russell's joyful laugh.
This is off the original laser Disk that was released in 1994 prior to DVD. Then they transferred over to the early DVD releases. And now appears pretty much on every release of that movie
Still pissed at Carpenter. (Not really) In an interview, I think in STARLOG magazine around the time of its release, he described filming 'Escape From New York' which was filmed in my hometown of St. Louis, MO: "We filmed in St. Louis because it looks like a run-down New York" Never forgiving him for that.
A huge problem with film today is the forced comedy aspect. This film would not be the same if they ended up taking that comedic approach. It sours the suspense. The Predator series is a perfect example of that, the character/villain has become a joke & at one time it was one the most terrifying.
I hear a hand-held torch lighter going off at some point, I’m betting Carpenter is stoned as shit during this & he’s just that much of a heavyweight where he can do a whole commentary passing a joint between the two of them
If you haven't seen the supercut of Kurt Russell laughing through The Thing commentary search it on YT, it's an absolute classic.
I remember watching that and not getting a single joke
That whole commentary track is so good. You can tell how fondly the two look back on it

Same, though I encountered it far later on my own, but it remains my favorite horror movie and nothing has even come close.

“LaserDisc”. That dates things nicely.
The dogs performance always blew me away. 4:01 that's scarily un-dog like. A true classic this film.

Thank the LORD for John Carpenter and Kurt Russell. This movie is amazing work of art. A horror masterpiece.
How about the other people involved in the movie?
Can you be anymore generic ? Horror masterpiece lol
7:32 if you watch the full scene, look at the bottom center/right. The "skull" that is ejected from the Dog Thing's head is crawling away!
Very creepy. 💀

Best commentary ever
two SUPREME men. Don't make 'em like this anymore. I think John is my favourite director !

John is the best XD “we couldn’t get any beer” hahahahha
I wonder how they got the dog to act so well. Like seriously it acts so ominously in every scene. Just creeping around.
It's not a dog. It's actually a wolf. Watch King Carpenter's NYU talk. He actually discusses the dog at length
Not hard to make a dog / wolf RUN lmao
Oh no let’s go 😊

Also, famously: composer
John , we are all waiting that you finish the trilogy with ESCAPE FROM EARTH while Kurt still can do it !!
