  • The longest non-stop routes always steal the spotlight. But, it’s for good reason: Not only do they tend to push aircraft to their upper range limits, but they also present a decent endurance test for passengers seated in economy class.
    But what about lengthy routes that have a single stop? These aren’t typically compared. But, in today’s video, we’ll examine the five longest in the world. So, buckle up, and get comfortable!

    A few years ago I had the pleasure of flying half the Singapore airlines route from Manchester to Houston and back. Even better, the tickets were $350. Not knowing it's the longest 1-stop, I did wonder why the economy passengers were going heavy on the Singapore Sling cocktails... 😀🍸

    It's not the longest 1-stop route, but there used to be a "milk run" route that JAL flew between Japan and Europe from the 1960s to the late 1980s. The same plane flew from HND (later NRT) - HKG - BKK - DEL - IKA (Tehran) - BEY - ATH - FCO then finally to LHR or CDG.

    The Qantas Rome flights are seasonal. They've announced that they'll be operated again next northern summer.
    The QF5/6 flight number used to be used for SYD-SIN-FRA, which was dropped just prior to the joint venture with Emirates starting in 2013.

      Most of Australians are likely to take a vacation to Europe during northern hemisphere summer months. Load factor and yield between Australia and Italy are quite good too. Hopefully with new order of A350-1000, we would see Qantas launch new nonstop flights to CDG and FRA as well to freeing up the B787-9 to other destinations.

      @@syafiqrizuan5588 Re flights to France, we'll have to see what the cabin seat layout is for the A350s. Under the current Air Service Agreement with France, Australian carriers are only allowed to fly 3.0 "units" per week. A "unit" being defined by the number of seats on the aircraft used, in a sliding scale with under 150 seats being 0.25 units and over 400 seats being 1.0 units.
      The 787-9 config of 236 seats is 0.5 units. If they were 4 seats more, it would be 0.6 units.

    I have done the LHR-PER route several times (787), and what a pleasure it was compared with my previous jaunts with Emirates with a 2 hour stop at Dubai.
    Not because of the aircraft type (A380 vs 787). I actually preferred the spacious A380. But the stop over in Dubai was 2 hours + and had to go through security queues all over again.
    So a single leg from LHR to PER, be it a 787, was a joy.

    Last year in August flew from Singapore to New York with stop in Frankfurt, but instead of being a Boeing 777-300er, it was A380.

      Lucky you! The A380 no longer operates this route.

    Sitting in economy seat on a non stop flight of these lenths can't be very good for one's health.

      In my twenties, which was mumble mumble years ago, I did LHR to Melbourne in economy on a BA 747. I think there were five stops, but my thighs were still numb and tingly for weeks afterwards. The return journey wasn't so bad in that regard. Don't know why.

      As someone who has done the Melbourne to LHR flight many times (all QF via SIN, DXB and HKG), all I can say is that the technical stop is often timed well as it breaks up the flight into two smaller flights, with a chance to stretch the legs for a couple of hours somewhere near the middle. As long as you stay hydrated and keep moving those legs everything is fine.
      I am yet to try the route via Perth, but being that it’s a relatively short hop from Melbourne to Perth it means that the PER to LHR sector would be a lesson in endurance.

      Doing the Houston or Dallas to Auckland or Sydney runs is….only possible on the likes of Air NZ or Qantas…LAX to Sydney on Delta in the middle of the middle with no free booze. I wanted to die, lol.

    Longest I've done is 11/12 hours non stop a bunch of times and that was bad enough 😅

    SQ removed the A380 from the route as they serve it and EWR with the ULR non stop service that both feature 67 business class seats each along with 94 premium economy. As such there's less premium demand left over for a further 78 business seats daily to add to the already huge 134 seats.

      No wonder there seem to be Award space on the A380 via Frankfurt flights. A lot of aviation RUclipsrs took that route and flew first class for great rates, and it was fill with your typical couple celebrating a milestone with the double bed set up. While the ULR flight was full with business passengers who didn’t want the stop and didn’t need to stop in Europe.

      @@JeanClaudeCOCO You're quite right. SQ was probably suffering a bit. Now the 380s have now been moved to Australia and UK routes.

    China Eastern Airlines is set to open a new route between Shanghai and Buenos Aires, two cities which are almost exactly on opposite sides of the globe, with a stopover in Madrid. Such route would be over 20,000 kilometers long.

    Did Mel to LHR via Perth. It was a last minute booking so I got the very back window seat on the Dreamliner. Definitely wouldn’t fly that route again in economy. 17hrs from Perth is brutal

    I did the JFK - FRA - SIN trek in 2012...
    Had a 1 night stay in Singapore (to get some good sleep) before on flying to ADL...
    The other direction (ADL - SIN - FRA - JFK) was broken up by getting off in Frankfurt and heading to Berlin for 5 days to see a footbal match

    Recently in September, Fiji Airways operated a one stop route from NAN - LAX - JFK. I was surprised to see that on flight radar. Hope to see something similar for their Canada route (NAN - YVR - YYZ)

    Do you think that Qantas will reallocate their flight numbers when project sunrise starts? Would make sense to give QF1/2 to the new (and unique) direct A350 flight from SYD-LHR, meaning the stopping A380 would be given a new number.

      Qantas has already stated that they'll retain the 1 stop routes to London when Sunrise starts. They are currently planning a non stop and a 1 stop to LHR from each MEL and SYD. As to which flights gets which numbers is anyone's guess. They have changed the flight numbers around on the AU-LHR route before.
      Before the Emirates tie up in 2013, Qantas had 2 flights from SYD and 2 from MEL:
      QF1/2 SYD-BKK-LHR
      QF9/10 MEL-SIN-LHR
      QF29/30 MEL-HKG-LHR
      QF31/32 SYD-SIN-LHR
      In 2013, they cancelled the LHR flights from BKK and HKG, renumbered SYD-BKK (QF23/24) and renumbered QF31/32 to QF1/2, then moved QF1/2 and QF9/10 to transit DXB before moving them back to SIN in 2018.
      Qantas still owns the LHR slots used by the 4 flights they used to operate there, the 2 slots they aren't using are leased to BA.

    Winter 2017 I flew to Jakarta, Indonesia using the IAH-MAN-SIN route with the final leg from SIN-CGK also using Singapore Airlines.

    The nearest I've come to any of these was in 2008, when I joined a Qantas 747-400 at Bangkok Suvarnabhumi going to London Heathrow, which had come in from Sydney. I have lost count of the number of international flights I have made, but what I can say without doubt is that it was the worst flight I've ever been on. The crew members in my cabin were rude to the point of being offensive, every seat was occupied and the food in economy class for the 13 hour flight was poor and insufficient. The atmosphere onboard was hot and stuffy, air conditioning was minimal. To crown this horrible flight, when we reached LHR, there was a fault with the air bridge and it took a further 45 minutes before we could disembark. The taxi I had booked almost didn't wait, since I had made contact on arrival at the gate, before the delay became apparent.

    I have flown one leg of a former one stop champion. JAL NRT-JFK-GRU, 11,490 miles! I don't believe they had fifth freedom rights between Sao Paulo and NYC.

    I would’ve thought Air New Zealand’s service from London to LAX and then to Auckland would’ve been on this list…my daughter’s taken the entire route, albeit in two separate years (we live south of LAX and she visited NZ and UK in two consecutive Semesters Abroad when she was in college in the mid 2010’s…each chunk was 6000 miles)

      Air NZ no longer operates flights to London. They have not done so for some years now.

      @@james.anderson-polesince Covid. Qantas use to operate a similar SYD-LAX-LDN flight ✈️. Those two flights would have made the list if they still flew it.

    Question, does it only count if they use the same plane? I normally do Sydney to Frankfurt via Singapore but the plane changes

      Given that routing, I'd bet that the flight number changes in Singapore as well. They are only counting 1 stop same flight number flights.

    Is it bad that the farthest south I've been is Costa Rica, east is cleveland, north is a hotsprings in BC, and west is Hawaii? Never seen the Atlantic Ocean from the US. Make a box with those as the corners and I've never been outside of it

    Most airlines found it not worthwhile offering such things cause one-stop 5 freedom long haul have no competitive advantage compared to rival carriers. Unless they have lots of demand(I mean very much) that they can find enough end to end passengers to fill an airplane even if 90% goes to competitors (EK,QR,NH). What worse, more emerging countries financially backed their carriers as a means to courage foreign investment. For strong asian carriers, operating flights outside Asia would typically means they cannot enjoy the labour costs advantage in their home bases even if the stopover countries do remove barriers for entry.

      The routes like SINGAPORE-MANCHESTER-HOUSTON actually make sense and financially viable with Singapore as the only carrier flying to Texas from the north of England. BA, and Virgin don’t and no US carrier does. Singapore has enough of a demand to fly from their home base to Manchester, England. Of all the Asian carriers and world carriers Singapore is one of the few who specializes in these ultra long distances.

      @@JeanClaudeCOCO Plus no idea How Star Alliance avoided having internal conflict for SQ having lots of 5 freedom flight towards USA with stopovers at Seoul/Tokyo/Taipei where it would be seen as stealing market share from another alliance carrier if it happened in Oneworld

    Clearly forgetting about Auckland to JFK with Emirates at 15,672 mi with 31hrs in the air
    Then their is Emirates AKL-DXB-IAH 16,991 mi at 33hrs in the air

      These are examples of "direct" flights, not non stop.
