- Cityscapes - Design and Color - David Dunlop Studio Workshop 2
In this program Emmy award winning artist and teacher David Dunlop examines the roots of design and color as they stretch across global cultures, traditions and time. He discusses how compositional ideas have descended to us over millennia and he traces the forms found in a shoreline seascape back to ancient Egypt. David then explores how this history re-emerges in a contemporary context in his oil painting demonstration of a fast moving cityscape. Visit daviddunlop.com for more information about our live streaming workshops and other DVDs, including our PBS Series Landscapes Through Time with David Dunlop. Развлечения

@@DavidDunlopSimmonsArt Thanks so much for your lovely response!⚘ I'd like to ask a question, please. I'm not sure where to address it, so I hope it's ok to ask here. Could you please advise how you frame your paintings done on aluminium plate? I'm inspired to paint on metal after watching your videos and I'd love to know how to frame them. Many thanks, and greetings from Australia. Dianne 🤗🎨💕
@@diannejonasson4663 HI, Dianne! I always love to know where people are when they are writing to us! One of the frames David uses is a metal frame called German Silver Nielsen 34 Metal Picture Frame from the company American Frame. You can take a look on their website and see how it holds the metal painting. I am sure there are companies closer to home that make similar type frames. Many people buying David's paintings might want to put their own frame on the painting for their own aesthetic reasons. This might be a great idea for a video! Thank you again. Kind regards, Connie and David
Thanks so much for your reply, Connie and David! I'll certainly check out these frames online. And, yes please, a video on framing would be fabulous! 😘 Thanks again and kind regards from sunny Port Macquarie NSW Au 🤗🎨💕

My God you know so much and im envious of you guys that know so much about technique. I just paint all the time but dont know much like you do.
How did you learn all these techniques????
None of us could do this as you are a very professional commercial artist. But its great to see all your experience.

Thank you so much for this wonderfully informative video. This deepened my appreciation for painting with your background tour through art history related to our biological propensity for patterns. Your big brush and squeegee are fun and inspiring for me to work larger and freer. Thanks you again

Long Live Art
And suddenly... magic!
I love your explanations for scientific impacts/aspects. I do have to wonder what the heck you did when no one could get toilet paper or paper towels last year though. ;)
Denis, thank you for your comments. I was able to get both products through the first stages of Covid. David
Thank you for all this densely packed information! Technical question, what kind of brushes do you use? I have never used a large brush and have no idea what to buy. thank you in advance. I can't wait to experiment!
Thank you, Kevin and Molla! We really appreciate your comments and thank you for taking the time to write! The large brushes I use are watercolor wash brushes that you can buy at any art supply store. Kind regards, David and Connie
Could you give a reading list? My research didn’t cover these historical & perceptual concepts. I’d like to know more.
Hi, HI, kyststudio-epicartadventure - That is very funny - thank you for watching and for writing. We are really happy that you enjoyed it! Good luck with your painting! Kind regards, David and Connie
Is this considered a negative painting? Thank you sir.
Very helpful instruction in composition and colour value. Where can I find your watercolour instruction? As I watch this I am doing my best to translate the exercise into watercolour. Thanks.

Suppose you want to add cars and signage. Do you just start painting over what you have done? You are changing how I want to paint.
HI, joelthronton3508 - Thank you for your question. As you see, sometimes I paint over older paintings on all of the many surfaces that I paint on: quadruple primed Belgian linen, paper, copper, single sheet aluminum, a composite sheet aluminium, like Dibond, comprising two 0.3 mm thick aluminium cover layers and a polyethylene or mineral core. Depending upon how dry the painting is, I might give it a light sanding. It really depends upon the painting, and different surfaces give different effects. Kind regards, David and Connie
Throwing dice on a concrete foundation.

Hi! Thank you so much. We are delighted you enjoyed it. Kind regards, David and Connie
This video could be your best ,but unfortunately the talking is at warp speed and we can’t take in the beautiful art either because it’s all moving too fast . Is the video speeded up ? So annoying ,especially for hearing impaired viewers like me ,and art lovers like me who spent many hours in great museums . You don’t show or speak of art at warp speed . Please 🙏
I don't trust you because you wear gloves, you must be afraid of paint.
Absolutely fabulous! I learned so much and get so excited when watching you.
