We did the I cut or the x cut I forget and if it’s windy out I feel cold air coming out around the window ... and it’s spray foamed so I second this method !!!!
So there's no spray foam? I'm genuinely asking..hahaha..not setting you up for attack..haha..I saw you illustrate how the foam causing the house wrap to pull away and I saw it there...I saw you caulk the flange of the window but I didn't see anymore use of foam..Is that only used when you do trim work? This is so interesting..I just subscribed to watch the motherload. :)
You could teach construction trades in a school for high school students. I am serious. You explain very well and students would listen to you. You would make a great teacher. Teach the trades,as that is needed for young people. Wish it would rain here. Take care
I love the step by step tutorial. I guess I can actually thank the naysayers this time. Even if you guys had to take time away from your project, to explain it to the YT know it alls'. I know myself and others who don't question your motives or ways of doing things, because you research it. Appreciate the step by step and the why as well. Great job as always.
Like the homeschoolers that you are you used this as a teaching moment! I have no doubts you are on the right track. But kudos to Doug - you may be setting a trend "reading the directions"!!
Felt like I just watched an episode of This Old House:) To take the time to go into an in depth explanation of the different installation methods, demo and all, was awesome. Great job guys!! It must be tough seeing all the negative comments but you guys are doing a fantastic job. Don't get discouraged and keep up the great work!!
That was one classy mic drop, Doug!! I love your intelligent, respectful response to criticism! Another reason why I'm so addicted to your channel! Blessings & peace, ya'll!!✌🍁🙂🍂🥰
So wonderful that you took the time to acknowledge your followers concerns - they obviously care about your project and are totally invested in your success. Your demonstration was clear, kind and enlightening. Good job! Loved Ashley’s arm sneaking into the frame to help, as always. Made me smile! Everyone needs an Ashley in their lives! And a Doug! Have an awesome day.
Doug, You said in previous videos it was better to cut the wrap the way you were doing it & when you showed us how you taped it, that was good enough for me. Sometimes you tell us this might not be the right way, but this is how I want to do it because it is behind a door. (i.e.drywall joint) This video will be a great help to anyone wanting to install new windows!! It very clear you and Ashley want your house to be properly done. I have said this before, your love is in the details for your family!! Take care & God Bless.
My husband's favorite saying is, "Just because it's different doesn't make it wrong." This has shown me the proper way to seal a window. Well-done you!
I'm an older woman and have no experience in building or window installation but even I understood and can see the sense in doing it the way you have. Well done!!!
Great job guys !!! Some people can't or won't accept change which is pretty amazing given that we live in the age of technology and things change daily. Change brought us indoor plumbing and running water. As well as defeating disease with water purification and medicine. So how can we not accept change. What's inspiring here is that u took the extra time to show why a new way was better to help improve the outcome for others. U didn't have to do that. I found this channel looking to help some friends with a bathroom floor in their mobile. Watched many then OITC. I discovered we could do the task properly, simply and without cutting corners. I know u have already researched and watched tons of videos which is why I'm comfortable following ur direction. To do a project properly and feel good about it IS the inspiration. Many thanks to Doug, Ashley and family.
Seems every time we turn around they invent a different way of doing things. I am not suprised. I often wondered why they did it the x way. I did it like he did on our home back before I even knew about it. I didn't work for a contractor eather. I did it the way I thought it made sence to me.
I know right ?!? The thing I find most interesting in myself is when Doug explains something like he did here. Talking about the water and keeping it away made a light bulb go off. Then I think... well darn that’s so simple we all should have know that already. Simple and straight forward.
Very concise information. I was getting annoyed on your behalf when people were telling you that you were doing it wrong ... I figured if ANYONE knew how to do it, you guys did because you do so much research on everything you do. Jeldwen should include this video in the sales of their windows and give you a couple of freebies, lol. As always, wonderful information. Thank you !! ❤️
Haha - nobody is going to stop questioning. This is the nature of absolutely any DIY videos on RUclips. Woodworking videos: "You're being super unsafe! You're going to cut your fingers off!" Welding videos: "Your welds look terrible! You obviously don't know how to set your machine up!" Home renovation videos: "I know a better way! You're dumb!" It's never going to stop, no matter how much the video demonstrates the right ways to do things.
You do such a nice job teaching. You do it in a manner that is knowledgeable and non threatening so that even old folks can accept new ideas. Great job you guys!🥰
You shouldn't care what the comments think about your work. You do you and congrats on the progress. Ohh yeah, you have 70k+ subscribers, you're doing something right.
Army Dave - I personally am glad they do care about what others think - therefore Doug can enlighten and teach a better way of doing things to help us. Take er easy and thanks for your service in the Army.
Great explanation. When in doubt think about where water wants to go and encourage it to go where it will cause the least damage. Nice mock-up, glad you took the time to build it and show the effect.
Some people can’t adjust to change. I think your demonstration was perfect. You explained it perfectly. People will still hate. They need to move on. Once again, great job.
It’s amazing to me how many people criticize without researching if the old ideas/methods are still the best way of doing things. You guys were so sweet and kind to respond in the manner that you showed in this video. You explained and taught, without lashing out. You very well could have not addressed the comments or responded in anger. I like how you guys are different and take the chances of getting some criticism in order to do things the way you believe is best. Thank you for being who you are and this video just makes me believe in you both even more! Love and hugs from NY 🥰
@Elizabeth Benson ..That's exactly why their Channel is my favorite.💖.Doug and Ashley are Humble, grateful for all God provides, teaches with grace and patients, works hard , sets goals, meets goals✔, and show their children with education, great work ethic, and determination, you Will move forward and Up in life without relying on others .I just Love this family..😊
I hate you guys feel like you have to explain why you're doing what your doing.... it's your house and you both decide how and what to do. I love your channel and think you both know what you're doing. I always look forward to the next video!
I LOVE Your Channel!! Your always doing and teaching the BEST methods that are NEW School. Besides, It's your house and I guarantee those who were freaking out about your technique will eat this shorts! LOL. You just taught a very Important Method to putting in Windows Properly. And will save heart ache and rotted wood for those learning watching you. Thank you! Good Job Doug and Ashley! 👍👍.
WOW, I'm blown away with the time and patience you took to demonstrate and throughly explain a better way to install windows to avoid the wood Rot. That was very informative and educational for a lot of people out here. Thank you for that!! It makes total sense.
I was one of those that was going to question your window installation. I didn’t because I have never installed new windows just watched others. So glad I held off commenting. “Better to keep your mouth shut and be thought fool, than to open it and remove all doubt.”
When you put the other windows in, at first I thought you were doing it wrong but I held my tongue. Because before the video was finished I realized how much better this style installation was. It just made sense. So, thank you for explaining the reason behind it. Love and blessings!
Thank you for taking the time to explain all of that. Not that you should have to explain yourself with your own home build but when people want to criticize and say you’re doing things incorrectly it’s nice that you were kind enough to take your time to show all of that.
I learned so much from this video that I thought I already knew, but was wrong on! I greatly appreciate this video and you taking the time to SHOW the reasons and justifications. I'm bookmarking this as my definitive how to for window installations. 😎🏆💯 I HEREBY PROPOSE THIS 'NEW METHOD' BE NOW AND FOREVER KNOWN AS THE DOUG CUT!!! 😀
Good tutorial. I'm a fairly new follower of yours and I don't know what type of schooling you've had in the construction business, but it's obvious that you've picked up good info from somewhere. I started watching your videos when I recognized my wife and I nearly 50 years ago. I would tackle almost any job mostly for the fun of doing it. My wife stopped being amazed a long time ago. I was a medical technologist for over 50 years. When we would get a new piece of lab equipment I would come in in the evening and sit down with the manuals and slowly dissect it to see how it worked. Keep doing what you are doing. YOU ARE DOING GREAT. (it's also neat to see your wife doesn't mind getting her hands dirty)
Makes perfect sense to me! Thank you for the demonstration and explanation. It's obvious to me that you have done lots of research about how to do this, not to mention experience from your previous house renovations! Perhaps those that feel the need to correct you in comments should do a little research as well. Methodology changes constantly in order to keep up with new products and discoveries! A tradesman should always be willing to learn in order to keep up to date.
I will never do what you are doing, but your tutorial was an excellent piece of work. It explained and demonstrated the reasons for what you were saying to convey. For a couple who are so busy with your own issues to make and take time on a subject like this is excellent thoughtfulness. I noted how bright and happy Ashley looked at the start of this episode, clearly Doug, she had an inkling of how good a tutor you are, and she is married to: ten out of ten for effort and presentation.
The first time I watched you all put in a window, I have to admit I was guilty of saying "wait, you're doing it wrong" but after watching how you did it (can't remember which video it was) I was so impressed by the end result I shared that video with my son who remodels homes. He loved the video and proceeded to share it with his boss who also agreed it is a better way of installing windows (his boss is a really old man and not easily swayed to new things haha). Also, your chickens.........they are getting so huge!
First of all, I apologize for my clumsy English! Yes, I did not study well at school ... :-( Actually, in Russia we build houses in a completely different way, using completely different materials and technologies. And that’s why I’m especially interested in your videos. Thank you very much for them! Very informative and interesting! And of course, I would like to wish good luck to all your friendly family! Great job guys! :-)
I had no doubt you knew what you was doing with the window install, Doug and Ashley you all seem to be perfectionist so I knew you would want everything done right! You all are doing a great job!!! I love watching your videos and look forward to the next room to be completed! Xoxo 😘
I think people should mind their own business when it comes to the "how to." It's your guys house, do what you believe is the right way. It's your house, time, money, and effort. Keep up the good work.
After watching your videos i was inspired and had confidence i could do this on my mobile home. I did my homework and validated this new technique on the manufacturer website. I’m pleased to report i did my first ever DIY project...successfully putting up sheathing on one section of my MH and it includes one window. So a huge thank you for your great content!!! My husband was totally impressed with my new knowledge and skill. 😁💪🏻
All of the windows in my new home are flush cut. I feel extremely confident that I will not have any leakage problems. Doug explained it exactly how my builder and window installer explained it to me when installing my windows.
You are such a good teacher! Everything you said makes perfect sense. And I admire that you two study the process and become knowledgeable enough to make intelligent choices. I would be surprised if some TV station doesn't try to sign you on to have your own show, some variation of This Old House.
20 years from now when others are sitting in their homes freezing, you two will be nice and warm in your cozy house enjoying your grandchildren. You know what you're doing so don't pay attention to what others may say. Most of your critics wouldn't know how to do any of things you've shown us if their lives depended on it. Go Team Doug and Ashley!
Okay Doug and Ashley. It's time. Multiple requests have been made for a reveal of where you received such wonderful training to make you the awesome Craftsmen you are today. What is your history in construction pre OITC? Whether it was a family member, a teacher or an employer who gave you your start, the explanation would make a great video. I could listen to your explanations all day. Your knowledge is overwhelming... and your not bad on the eyes 😊 So, if I'm not being to pushy, SPILL IT 😁
Very educational and informative video. You guys are the best. Unlike other home diy channels on RUclips. I can be sure you’ve done your homework and you are sharing the best way. Thanks guys. I look forward to each new episode of your reno.
Yep! Your way makes more sense. Don't ask me why I sat and watched this video for over 20 minutes. I live in an apartment, and will probably never get the chance to put in a window. LOL I became obsessed with home improvement shows when I did own a house. Property Brothers, Fixer Up, Mike Holmes, etc. I watched them all. Anyways, good work. You should try to get your own HGTV show!
Nice! I love learning new things, even when I have no intention of having to build or remodel a house. By watching your channel, I now have enough good knowledge to really be a pain in the patooties to any contractor I might need to hire, LOL.
Newsflash people it’s not your house so save your rude comments or your helpful hints if you don’t like watching move on because some of us love it. Keep up the hard work guys you’re doing an excellent job so keep them videos coming ❤️
Very good explanation. I am a carpenter framer for 30 years. I never new about that. I was taught the X cut. I have not worked as a carpenter for 25 years .
lol you guys wore matching colors. You are such an awesome couple. Loved the fact that you explained in detail. Show the haters who is wrong. RUclips carpenter experts are just trolls who sound off in the comments. A true professional wouldn't tell someone how wrong they were in the comments.
I've been watching you guys long enough to know you don't do ANYTHING on your place without researching it first. Hell you even researched what kind of chickens to get. Keep up the good work!
Idk why people care so much to comment and tell you you're wrong. I think everything you've done so far has made perfect sense and this reasoning behind this video is also incredibly smart.
I can't stand when people do that. I comment on various posts saying this.If you know for sure if it's wrong then that's fine.A lot of people fail to understand things have changed so much from just a couple of years ago.
delphine I totally agree or even like constructive criticism but passionate disagreement kind of makes no sense. Plus this is their house and not whoever all commented about them being wrong.
I am up there in years and always did my researcher on how to get a job done. The money was not always available to pay someone to do it and at that they did not always know what they were doing. Always love your videos and never to old to learn.
LOL I saw your window install last time, then saw someone else on another channel install windows with a modified x cut, and I thought, "Well, that doesn't look right." LOL. Very good explanation. Hoping I never have to do it myself, but I enjoy watching you work.
Inspectors have always had a terrible time getting people to flash windows correctly. Flashing goes on the bottom first, then the window... the sides next, on top of the window frame/flange, extending over the bottom flashing. The top last, on top of the window fin, the side flashing, and under the house wrap. It's not new, it's just finally getting through to builders. I was doing this in the 80s. The material was a little different, but the system was the same. Along the way, someone got the idea that doing that X thing was cool, and made other people feel they were doing it wrong if they complied with the required 'layering' requirements for windows. Thank you, so much, for showing this in detail. You're going to save a lot of people from air and water intrusion, rot, etc. So well done.
I'm not a carpenter nor have I ever put in a window or a door. The way you explained it makes perfectly good sense to me. Great video thanks for sharing.
Your work looks wonderful. I wish contractors would be as careful and detail oriented as you two are. The buildings would be in better shape. You do a great job. Love your house.
Doug and Ashley you amaze me you take the negative window building comments and take the time to explain why yous have chosen the style of window building and the benefits of it in years of cold weather or heat could get through the gap too...hopefully ppl that have just started watching your fantastic channel will understand you are DIYfferent and dont follow the masses, you research find the best way for yous and then do it everything gets finished and works...thanks for one last video b4 I go on holidays guys have a great 2 weeks see ya when I'm back...😊🛣🚙🏕🛸
Was worried that after you showed us the bad ways, you'd have to replace the wrap so you could do it correctly, lol. This is all good. Thank you! Glad to see the house more secure.
I admire your patience in taking the time to share with those who have been critical of your methods why you do what you do. It is clear that you aren't being careless, you obviously have done your research. This was an interesting and informative video, not to mention another great example of your work ethic and teamwork.
Using up-to-date methods is absolutely crucial. More and more man made and laminated materials are being used in construction, meaning they're increasingly vulnerable to water damage and more expensive and time consuming to fix. This was a great lesson to show the need for continued education in the building trades.
Great video! You are one of the best teachers that I have ever seen. Great explain and demonstrate how to do the better & newer way to put a window in!!! Great job guys!!
Thank you for your explanation of window installation........ you will always have the nay sayers but how you did it makes sense! keep up the great work.... looking forward to your next video
Better ideas come from thinking outside the box. You guys hit a home run on this one. I eagerly look forward to watching your videos - keep up the good work.
Very good I formation, I would take your advice any day, I’ve already learned several things from you and I know you’re not here to teach and educate but I totally appreciate every tip of information you put out!
That's all its been doing here in Michigan. We could have used it two months ago. Now we do not really need it. Farmers are trying to get their crops in.
Nice video Doug. Thanks for explaining so thoroughly and showing as well. All the naysayers should be more than happy with your explanations. The house is looking great and really looking forward to seeing the kitchen area come together.
I know I throw my 2 cents in alot, and, I certainly hope you understand I'm only trying to help. In some cases, like the vents, I didn't know that ridge vents had been installed which is why I had concerns that you were closing up the side vents. In any case, I just want you to know that my only goal is to be helpful! The way you sealed the window with the tape is exactly how Tommy Silva from This Old House does it, and he's the man when it comes to sealing windows (or anything else for that matter), and I always encourage watching TOH videos as they'll never steer you wrong. Window installation overall looks good, and everything about the wrap you said makes sense too.
Watch us work on this home from the start!: ruclips.net/p/PLB6I6KoGYpp62Z2DQhIXgqBbDsBhDRijJ
Good informational video, really appreciare it ...but I'm still not understanding the caulk part... You caulked it jus to put tape over it?
@@lavonn188 That's just typically what is called for. Extra protection doesn't hurt.
THANKS for the explanation. I have ALWAYS thought/felt that if people understand the "Why" of things, they will be able to do the RIGHT Thing.

You guys taught that gracefully. Don't worry about petty arguments or if there s a difference in opinion. Y'all know what you're doing. It shows .
It's good of you to explain why your doing something a certain way when you don't have to. Your good teachers good job! Carrie
What a public service you have just provided! Thanks for the tutorial!
Ashley, if you’re the one reading the comments, you are by far the best Sous Renovator known to mankind lol. I hope hubby knows how lucky he is!

You do such a nice job teaching. You do it in a manner that is knowledgeable and non threatening so that even old folks can accept new ideas. Great job you guys!🥰

I like the way your doing your windows, but most important is the thought you've invested to doing a job correctly.
Your patience and willingness to educate those who have criticized you is so endearing and shows what a wonderful husband/father/man you are.🙌
How generous! thank you for building the demo window and taking the time to explain the different cuts.
Air bad. Thank you. Great demonstration. So thoughtful for you to take the time to explain, demonstrate and film. Bravo
Makes perfect sense to me! Thank you for the demonstration and explanation. It seems like it only rains when we need to work outside, or are painting, haha.
OMGOODNESS!!! I'm one of those that said the "X" cut was better! So sorry! That was 30 yrs ago! Great demo & explanation! Ty
First of all, I apologize for my clumsy English! Yes, I did not study well at school ... :-(
Actually, in Russia we build houses in a completely different way, using completely different materials and technologies. And that’s why I’m especially interested in your videos. Thank you very much for them! Very informative and interesting!
And of course, I would like to wish good luck to all your friendly family! Great job guys! :-)
I've always been interested how other countries do things.
Your English is just fine! No apology necessary.
Thanks for taking the time to explain all that! I've learned a lot from watching your progress!
You are such a good teacher! Everything you said makes perfect sense. And I admire that you two study the process and become knowledgeable enough to make intelligent choices. I would be surprised if some TV station doesn't try to sign you on to have your own show, some variation of This Old House.
An awesome idea! I have never seen such a hard working couple as them!!!
This demonstration was so well done and so clear.
Your knowledge is overwhelming... and your not bad on the eyes 😊 So, if I'm not being to pushy, SPILL IT 😁
He has said multiple times its mostly self taught..research,, trial and error learning from mistakes...etc.
@@dianewilliams9858 uh huh
Thanks for watching :)
Doug, I swear you are the Einstein of Renovation. Thanks for the enlightenment. It makes perfect sense!
Nice! I love learning new things, even when I have no intention of having to build or remodel a house. By watching your channel, I now have enough good knowledge to really be a pain in the patooties to any contractor I might need to hire, LOL.
There is literally 0% chance I will be installing a window but I still enjoyed hearing your installation advice. Really well explained!
Newsflash people it’s not your house so save your rude comments or your helpful hints if you don’t like watching move on because some of us love it. Keep up the hard work guys you’re doing an excellent job so keep them videos coming ❤️
The side of the house wrap he demonstrates is the interior side. It's the side that is warm and dry.
I'm telling you Doug u and Ashley need your own tv show !!!
Very good explanation. I am a carpenter framer for 30 years. I never new about that. I was taught the X cut. I have not worked as a carpenter for 25 years .
As the old saying goes, " if you're lucky, you learn something new everyday". Good one, eh?
lol you guys wore matching colors. You are such an awesome couple. Loved the fact that you explained in detail. Show the haters who is wrong. RUclips carpenter experts are just trolls who sound off in the comments. A true professional wouldn't tell someone how wrong they were in the comments.
Well done on the tutorial! Love how you don't give in to the negativity of others. Many blessings to you and your family.
@@geminigurl92 true Thats what I say to the people. Its their home if they like it I love it.lol
I don’t know squat about installing windows but everything you did & said makes perfect sense!
I agree. Seems common sense to me.
I am up there in years and always did my researcher on how to get a job done. The money was not always available to pay someone to do it and at that they did not always know what they were doing. Always love your videos and never to old to learn.
THIS IS AN EXCELLENT TUTORIAL DOUG! Don’t let all the so-called pros discourage! You both are awesome! Grammy!
Boom!! Drops the mic!!
Lol awesome way of explaining!! You explained it very well both verbally and visually. Great job!
You tell em Doug. You seem smart and capable in all you do. I agree with some of the other comments that you would make a good trade school teacher.
I am getting ready to replacer a few windows and I am thankful for this video. Good information and thank you
I'm not a carpenter nor have I ever put in a window or a door. The way you explained it makes perfectly good sense to me. Great video thanks for sharing.
How kind of you for going to all that trouble You are a lovely man the way you explain everything very kind . 👍👍😁😁👏👏👏🌺😄🌷🌹👍👍
I can’t believe you went to all this effort to show us the proper way to install windows! Thank you!!
I didn't understand why you were doing it diyfferent but I was sure you had a reason. Thank you for explaining why and sharing your knowledge with us!
Your work looks wonderful. I wish contractors would be as careful and detail oriented as you two are. The buildings would be in better shape. You do a great job. Love your house.
Great lesson. Improvements on methods are always good. Keep sharing with us, Guys.
Golly, I can do this! You two made it clear and understandable. I am in Construction 101 from your examples. Wonderful.
Doug and Ashley you amaze me you take the negative window building comments and take the time to explain why yous have chosen the style of window building and the benefits of it in years of cold weather or heat could get through the gap too...hopefully ppl that have just started watching your fantastic channel will understand you are DIYfferent and dont follow the masses, you research find the best way for yous and then do it everything gets finished and works...thanks for one last video b4 I go on holidays guys have a great 2 weeks see ya when I'm back...😊🛣🚙🏕🛸
Most sensible and informative installation video ever ! 🇬🇧🇬🇧
I agree...
Was worried that after you showed us the bad ways, you'd have to replace the wrap so you could do it correctly, lol. This is all good. Thank you! Glad to see the house more secure.
Your so patient. I'd block them, everyone thinks they know so much better then those doing it.
This was a great lesson to show the need for continued education in the building trades.
well said Doug and Ashley....... some people don't like stepping out of the dark ages. great demo .....👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆
I am in construction and we do the same way as you demonstrated.. great job... I see you finally got rain...
That's all its been doing here in Michigan. We could have used it two months ago. Now we do not really need it. Farmers are trying to get their crops in.
Excellent video!!! Great description of whats happening when you wrap a house and install windows/doors!! I feel like I was just scolded by Dad... :)
lol, sorry
@@diyfferent No worries!! It was VERY educational!
Nice video Doug. Thanks for explaining so thoroughly and showing as well. All the naysayers should be more than happy with your explanations. The house is looking great and really looking forward to seeing the kitchen area come together.
Great explanation and many now wish they had known before they were so criticising of your hard work.
Nicely said/demonstrated as usual. 5 cups of thought thoroughly mixed with 5 cups of common sense. Good recipe!
It's okay, we appreciate the interaction. Thanks!
