The only way I could stand listening to that singer wailing was to imagine that she cut her finger with her box cutter knife. Try it. It starts to make sense! Lol
Anyone who complained about the music, are just complainers and couldn't find any others flaws in this video. If music stops you from watching an informative instructinal video, you're the stupid one & probably aren't going to be installing windows ever anyway. Quick, precise & easy to follow window flashing video IMO. Even though Zip Stretch is far superior stretch tape
I love that you taped the top flap down so seal it off from air. I don't like that you cut the sides of the wrap and took them inside the house. Any air that gets behind the wrap can now be sent inside the house. I would just cut those sides flush with the window opening and use tape to create an air seal.
@@andresmedina1279 as he stated, tape the edge. cut tyvec@ edge of window. this seals the tyvec@ the rough opening. doing this stops air from getting into the house @ the sides of the window. just because someone makes a video does't mean it's the last word. use your own thought's and process what you are seeing. just think about it. air is a powerful thing.. as is water & frost.
If the air is behind the Tyvek it will get into the house even if the sides were not wrapped in, unless all sheathing joints are sealed etc. Also since the sides wrap around they terminate behind the drywall in the wall cavity unless the subs trim them at the inside.
This video was extremely helpful, with some funky music to boot. I wish it covered the interior details though. What do I do with those flaps that were folded in, should I use window expansion foam, etc
The only time you would use window foam is if you're stud is warped or there is a space in between the window frame and stud when everything is installed.
Depending on if you use sheetrock or wood to dress the inside stud opening the sprayfoam always ends up cut out and blowing in the breeze on the floor.
May I suggest that the approach should favor channeling any incipient moisture out of the cavity instead of asserting that waster will never get on to that cavity.
I am residing a 1970's home. What is the proper installation of tyvek around the existing windows & doors that are already installed on the home? Windows and doors are not being replaced. Thank you
First off, don't use Tyvek - it's a garbage way to air seal - it's almost never done properly. Use Zip system (go watch Matt Risenger's Build Show channel on how to properly water/air seal). Regardless, you don't caulk/seal/tape the bottom flange of any window - that's where any moisture that enters the window opening can escape.
So is the air seal maintained by using urethane foam around the sides of the window since the bottom is neither caulked nor taped? Oh and I do like the music .
Glad you liked the music as it made me almost leave the video. It was too loud in comparison to the vocals of the trainer and became obnoxious in my personal opinion.
After you bring the flap down over the window nail fin you taped the flap to the window. I have seen it also where it wasn't taped for the reason if moisture got behind the tyvek it allowed it to escape? any thoughts?
what prevents water that may get inside the window flange from dripping inside onto the sheetrock/interior wall when it lands on the framing sill? Does he lower sill need to installed on a tilt? Asking because I have this problem, and want to know what was done wrong.
Great to find this video, even if I can't find the product (Home Depot Canada). Agreed with others, music is annoying, but video for window install is excellent. I do like the flex flash does not need to be cut in the bottom corners. Maybe I'm overbuilding my shed? LOL
Why would you wrap the house wrap to the inside of the house? If air gets behind it you're sending it to the inside of the house. I would think it would be best if you cut the house wrap anywhere on the jambs then used the Tyvek tape to tape it to the jamb. That will protect the jamb as well as seal off a pathway for air.
Well if you want your window manufacturer to honor their warranty & pass inspection from the county i live in California you better put those nails in bottom. Don't call the bottom & I use the thinnest shim to leave a tiny gap before you drive the nails in so if water does get behind it, it has a path to drain. Also with vinyl if you don't put a few nails in bottom nail flange to keep it from saging over time & pulling the bottom track down & out of square. Especialy for big heavy slider windows. Some inspectors will let it pass without the lower nails, but if the window manufacturer comes out to inspect a warranty issue & those nails aren't present & they call for them in their install instructions, they won't honor the warranty.
LOL In different regions framing members are referred to by different names. Usually the cripples are above or below the window and a jack or trimmer is used with the king stud at the sides, but again depends on who you are talking too.
Never seal the bottom some like to actually use a tiny shim under the flange and pitch the sill so in the event water gets in it goes out instead of traveling into the home
No. The video did not show the completion of the sill pan. At the inside you run a bead of sealant at the window frame to the FlexWrap which creates a sill pan. If a leak should occur above and run down the jambs it will hopefully collect on the sill in the sill pan and be redirected back to the exterior. Thus the sill is not sealed to let the water weep out if needed.
It is not correct. You don’t start window tape on the sides. I understand that you put some under the window on the sill, but you need to start at the bottom first and get the window tape under the flange of the window and then overlapping onto the paper below. Extend the bottom 6 inches past the left and right sides. Then you need to install the window tape on the sides on the window nailing flange close to the windowFrame 6 inches past the top and bottom. Next, we need to install the window tape on the top over the nailing flange 6 inches past both sides. This should be done before the paper goes on. Siding is not waterproof so waterproofing. The underlayment is extremely important.
Framers are getting a bad deal having to mess with all these different doors & windows. Definitely too many liabilities to frame today. Not to mention OSHA always fineing these guys for petty things.
Drain wrap is a false sense of security. One millimeter protrusions are not going to to anything especially considering moisture will span a gap of 3mm. Plus, with a drainable house wrap you have ZERO ventilation. Don’t waste money on a drain wrap. Invest in a rainscreen drainage and ventilation mat.
Why in the world do you need irritating music playing in the background while we are trying to listen to this man???
The only way I could stand listening to that singer wailing was to imagine that she cut her finger with her box cutter knife. Try it. It starts to make sense! Lol
Because Tyvek b thugged out....WHUUUUUUT 😜😜😂😂😂
Well done, one of the best 'classes' of how to use Tyvek proper. It took me 2 hours of garbage videos to eventually find this one. Thank You!!

What kind of caulk would you use where the nail flange meets the Tyvek ?

@@lukepotosky7710 There is always a space lol. You don't frame things tight.
id trust this more if the TRIMMERS/JACKS werent called cripples, cripples are what are below and above the window, not the sides.
Love the info and demonstration. The constant music, not so much.
Then the siding guys coming pop holes in it
When he finished taping the window off and said “plumb and level” I fucking cried!!! 😂😂
can you please do a video how to properly flash a recessed window. Stucco finish. 2x6 wall.thanks

I like to place several $ 100 bills under the sill wrap to surprise the remodeler
99 out of 100 contractors would never find it...
Haha.. Good one!!! 😄
This guy is a “certified” installer?
😳😳😳
I really enjoyed watching this . . .
That damn music is enough for me to go back to tar paper

I'm not a professional, but I suggest temporarily removing the windows in order to properly seal around them using the same method as presented.
Thought it was supposed to be vertical over horizontal on the flashing tape?
No😂 that's not shingled
If you tape the top flap of tyvek how will the water get out if it ever gets between the sheathing and the tyvek?

Definitely tilt the sill outwards. I use a 2° angle on my cripples to get a tilt

Yikes, no drip cap?
Not all regions use drip caps and it can depend on what the cladding material is.

Thanks for the tutorial. However, You skipped over one of the most important parts when you did the head at 1:13.
Which was??
IM sure this has been noticed ...but why but the seal on top of the house wrap on the sides? Imma say nah thats not sealed and not the best
Butyl loses adhesion in hot climates. Ask me how I know. Acrylic flashing tape is far superior.

Whats with the crazy music?
Wrapping the sides is a mistake. There is zero need for a drainage plane on the sides, and it interferes with foaming later. The rest is correct.
I think you are calling the Jack stud a cripple. He may be offended
